Walpurgis is the title of that version. It's the lyrics that set to two versions apart. It's from the Peel Sessions. ua-cam.com/video/7qVRJmFvSS0/v-deo.html
Good reaction, dudes! This is actually from their second album, Paranoid from late 1970. The first album is self-titled, from early 1970. If you want to hear the real birth of heavy metal, you need to do the song Black Sabbath from the album Black Sabbath. It's the opening tritone intervals of the guitar in that song that codified the sonic aesthetic of heavy metal to come. I'd love to see you guys react to Kamelot - Elizabeth (the live version from the One Cold Winter's Night concert recordings), but I know I am probably going to be the only requesting this. 🙂
Dude I cry everytime I hear the crowd part. As a musician, knowing the blood sweat n tears that go into creating such an awesome tune, then to hear a crowd sing your song in sync has definitely gotta be such an great feeling/ moment.
When was the last time you saw a crowd so varied? From the oldest to youngest. That's the power Black Sabbath has. 50 years later, they are still bringing new fans. Ozzy said it "As long as there's still people with hidden rage and feel unappreciated, heavy metal will exist "
The Rolling Stones at Western Springs Stadium, Auckland, NZ, April 2006. There had to have been four generations of people there, from young kids to great-grandparents. Some of the kids were really young, and some of the adults REALLY old!
I was thinking the same thing, but I added punk rock to it too back in the 70’s. You were one or the other but still sick of all the same shit. It seems like kids today don’t have that f u attitude that made us love these bands. Either that or they do but are to lazy to stop playing video games to do anything about it. Lol. I say this having two in their twenties. Another problem is while I was paying $15 a concert they now have to pay $80-100. I thank god I didn’t grow up in this generation. God knows what I would’ve been like without live music as an outlet.
Sabbath, especially in the beginning, never considered themselves a heavy metal band. They were dubbed as heavy metal, and the first band to be called that, but starting out, they considered themselves closer to a blues rock band. Aside from the song heavily played on the radio, most of their first album was closer to their blues roots than their metal future.
Now you have to watch the live version in Paris 1970 when he was just a kid. Plus the original drummer . The drums sound different here and deeper. I am surprised Ozzy sounds so good . Almost like he recorded himself from years ago and dubbed it in some how.
ozzys brain is completely fucked at the time this was recorded, but he can sing his own songs better than anyone could, you might not understand what the fuck hes speaking about normally, but he could sing the phone register to you perfectly.
I've been a Sabbath fan since their first album came out. Yep, I'm friggin' old. A lot of people don't realize that a lot of their lyrics were about love and peace, not anything dark. Go look up the lyrics to "After Forever". But the riffs Tony Iommi came up with, he wanted them to sound like something from a horror movie. Remember that they hit the scene during the Vietnam War and the threat of nuclear destruction. The War Pigs were the ones responsible for the war. Also, if you look at the guitarist Tony Iommi's fingers, they have plastic tips. He was working at a sheet metal plant and quit to pursue starting the band. On his last day, he cut his fingertips off in the sheet cutter. So he's played his entire career with plastic fingertips he makes himself.
When Black Sabbath reunited for the first time, a thing I thought I would never see in my lifetime, I openly cried several times during the show. I am not a small guy, and the bigger guys around me were doing the same.
The guitarist lost his left finger tips in a steel mill accident in his 20's and made plastic fingertips he still uses so he could play guitar. Tony Iommi

I admit that when i attended the only Black Sabbath concert held in my country, I cried like a baby! I never thought i would see them perform live! They were amazing! Awesome energy and they show respect to the audience!
Kudos to you guys picking up on the talent in the band beyond the singer. It's world-class songwriting and musicianship that make this song as compelling today as it was 50 years ago. I would encourage you to keep falling down this classic rock/metal rabbit hole - you won't regret the trip.
This will be a long comment, prepare yourself. For context, the album this song is from turns 50 years old in September of this year. It was Sabbaths second album. The members are Ozzy Osbourne, Tony iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill ward. These guys are widely regarded as the first metal band and have influenced every metal/hard rock band that came after them either directly or indirectly. They basically set the stage for the metal genre as a whole, creating many different sounds that would later result in a lot of metal sub-genres. Ozzy Osbourne is not a superb technical singer, but his voice is so unique and haunting that it fits the music perfectly. Tony iommi is the guitarist and he had the tips of two of his fingers chopped off his fretting hand in an industrial accident before they even had a record deal. Tony is widely regarded as the riff master and if you ever hear a similar riff, Tony did it first. Geezer butler is the bassist and he has said that he would let tony do his thing, and then he would simply follow along and do his own thing. He doesn’t just play a simple rhythmic bass line to keep tempo, he adds to the song with his own little riffs and semi-solos. And bill ward is the drummer and a lot of the staple drum beats you hear in metal were developed by him. Their first six albums are absolutely astonishing and they were released between 1970 and 1975. The album this song is on is called Paranoid. If you decide to continue listening to sabbath, I highly recommend finishing the album. The songs are as follows: War Pigs, Paranoid, Planet Caravan, Iron Man, Electric Funeral, Hand of Doom, Rat Salad and Fairies Wear Boots. The other albums worth listening to are: Black Sabbath (self titled), Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage. The four original members are all 70+ years old now and the show you guys watched was from their final tour that ended in February 2017. Three of the original members were in the tour. The drummer, bill ward, being the only one that didn’t join.
The person who filled in was Brad Wilk from Rage Against the machine I believe. He also played on Sabbath's 13 album. So Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Brad was the version on The End tour.
Greatest band of all time. Nobody plays bass like Geezer, drums like Bill, guitar like Tony, or sings like Ozzy. Not to mention his lyrics. And I love how their songs always change. Sometimes a few times. And there's no other Sabbath other than Ozzy's Sabbath to me. Been listening to them since I was 4 with my dad (I'm 26) so I'm a little biased :) No way I could ever pick my top 5 but I LOVE (in no particular order) Electric Funeral, A National Acrobat, Warning, Into the Void, Wicked World and many more lol.
Jacob Freiberger My favorite band as well and has been for a few years now (22 male). I just can’t comprehend another band topping what these guys have done and I’m more than glad if that’s the case.

The reason the crowd were so emotional, is because this was their last gig ever ( the DVD is called The End). And it was Live in their hometown Birmingham
I got to see them with my best friend, during the end tour. It was a night I cant ever forget seeing black sabbath for my first and last time. It was a once in a life time experience.
I got to see them in London just before they went to do their last 2 shows in Birmingham, their hometown. It was amazing. Right up front! Ozzy sounds clear as ever, amazing. But when he talks, even British people were screaming "Speak English!" 😂 Some Spanish dude behind me screamed "Español, por favor!" 😂🤣
Can't tell you how many times I blared this song through the speakers. I can honestly say this is the only song I would be comfortable karaoke the shit out off, but nervous as hell at the same time cause it's so iconic, and I couldn't live with myself if I dishonored the song
I read that since the song “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf has the line “heavy metal thunder” in it, that it is credited with being the first metal song and coined the term.
Several bands are credited by most folks with starting the foundations for heavy metal. Black sabbath was the MOST influential but Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were also influential. I forget who said it, maybe Frank Zappa...but the saying is there is no metal riff in existence that Toni Iomi (Black sabbath's Guitarist) didn't already put in a song back in the day with Black sabbath. EVERY song had so many different riffs as you will soon see.
Zeppelin and Deep Purple were more blues based hard rock , not metal. Zeppelin was blues based, Purple at one point even played with a symphony. The difference is the darker lyrics and the faster pace of the music.
I don't know why I enjoy watching people experience these kinds of things, but it makes me happy. I discovered Sabbath when I was 13, then come to find out that my dad listened to him when he was in high school. I was mad that he'd never played them for me.
N.I.B was the first song on the first album: Black Sabbath (a self titled album) Paranoid (the album War Pigs is on) is the second? album, with 3 of the most famous Sabbath songs on it : Paranoid, Iron Man and War Pigs Also the guy was crying at the start because this was one of the last shows on Black Sabbath's final, this is end tour. The only non-original member there was the drummer, because Bill Ward refused to go on the tour. Geezer Butler, Ozzy and Toni Iommi were there from the start Also, react to either Dead Skin Mask, or War Ensemble by Slayer
It is an anti-war song, but not specifically about Vietnam. The band is British and I heard Ozzy himself say it was not about Vietnam. There was a world-wide anti-war sentiment amongst us young folk back then. And this song was just a reflection of that.
I saw Sabbath perform this live at a music festival - the whole crowd singing along drowned out the sound of a 747 flying directly overhead. Was one of the most amazing experiences.
Yes Ozzy still has the tattoo on his fingers today, watch the video for Ordinary Man and you will see it when he puts his left hand to his head after getting emotional after seeing a photograph of Randy Roads, very powerful song and a culmination of his music history
Close! War Pigs was the first song of the second album which came out the same year as the self-titled first album. Definitely need you guys to check out the first song of the first album Black Sabbath. Another one of those where the band name is the album name is the first song name. Enjoy guys!
Been listening to this great music for 46+ years. Best Acid music along with Pink Floyd we would listen to. What an acid trip that was. By the way, he is currently not able to tour due to his health.
Three of the original members on stage here, Ozzy, Geezer (bass) and Tony (guitar. The drummer is Tommy Clufetos who had been playing with Ozzy for several tours.
That last section (the part the crowd is singing) gets me misty sometimes, too. There are just certain riffs that have a "vibe," you know? That's one of 'em.
"War Pigs" is off of Sabbath's sophomore release. Paranoid (originally meant to be titled: War Pigs.) Both their debut album: Black Sabbath and its follow-up (which this song is on) Paranoid were released in 1970. Most bands released an album every six months in those years. Yep.
I was roughly 8 when my cousin lent me her Bark at the Moon cassette tape-roughly five yrs later found the magic that is Black Sabbath. 48 yrs old now and I’m still in love🥰🖤
They were the first concert headliner I ever saw when they played with Pantera and Deftones for the reunion tour 98. haha so long ago, like a freshman in high school
The only time I was able to see Ozzy was at the Municipal Coliseum in Lubbock, TX. May 1, 1996. Sepultura opened. Then Type O Negative played. The the Oz Man himself. It was the best concert I have ever been to in my life. I can still vividly see the concert in my mind today. Freakin so damn awsome. Sepultura ended really strong. Type O Negative gave one hell of a performance. But when Ozzy came out the whole place exploded.
Ozzy is still recording. He and Tommy Iommi are in peace now. He has his solo work but now colabs with Black Sabbath too. Unfortunately, Ozzy had health affected much by an accident while riding a quadricicle some years ago. Ozzy had multiple fractures and stayed in coma for days. He recovered well, but mobility got compromised, that's why Ozzy doesn't run on the stage anymore and holding on the mic stand for support. If there's a devilissh being in this band is the guitarist Tommy Iommi: his solos are unbelievable!
Put your black light on and enjoy.... Remember my Mom giving me money to go to the mall and i came back with a black light and a Sabbath comp with Ozzy. My life started to change after that.
I'm not sure if anyone else already mentioned this or not ,but Tony Iommi the guitarist lost the tips of his fingers in a work accident the last day on the job before they were to go pro. He made his own prostetic fingers tips from plastic bottle caps and strips of leather. It caused him to have drop the tuning on the guitar so the string tension wouldn't cause him pain. that created the sound of what became Heavy metal.
The reason the crowd is particularly vivacious is because this is was shot on The End tour. Black Sabbath's FINAL tour. Everyone in that crowd knows this is the final time they will see them. I saw The End when it stopped in Noblesville, Indiana, myself. Our crowd, myself included, were going ape shit, from old-timers that saw them live in the 70's to me who only got to see them live once, at the end...
I didn't even know this live show. Imagine following the band and then seeing these guys rocking out so hard. One. Last. Time... (Maybe) I can totally understand some people in the audience crying.
this was off their second album "Paranoid". The original title of the album was supposed to be War Pigs which if you see the cover of that album the artwork still reflects that. The name War Pigs is actually a play on the "Walpurgisnacht" which is when the witches would meet. I believe Wiccans still practice that night
its amazing what music can do to a person. the emotion it can bring, especially when seeing a band that has influenced your life. Though I have never cried there has been heightened emotion during certain songs ive heard bands play live. Lateralus and Parabola by Tool live hit me every time and found out a couple months ago that so does Pneuma. music is
The first Metal band I saw live, back in 1976! The last Metal band I saw live was Babymetal, in February. I fucking love being a Boomer! The album this track was from, Paranoid, is definitely worth exploring. Steppenwolf were the first to use the term 'Heavy Metal' and, back in 76, that was the only genre of Metal available and, while it's been fun hearing so many different types of Metal evolve over the years, Babymetal's Kawaii Metal has been one of the most pleasing. Ozzie is not 95! He's 94 at the most.
Black Sabbath was one of a couple bands to birth the "Metal" genre. The step before them with bands like Cream were still something like 'Heavy Blues Rock'. Being that these guy are ancient the studio version is obviously better quality, but they still rock live at 105. Song is essentially an anti-war protest song blaming the power mad generals who send the poor to fight in their stead for the fun of it. Then about their reckoning on judgement day. The line "begging mercies for their sins (pause and and drum riff) Satan , laughing, spreads his wings" Is so fucking hardcore 🤘😈
More than hardcore...Satan is laughing, because S/He is fully aware they WON'T receive any mercy. Because they gave none. How fitting to the Times we are now living in...sadly.
Back then we just called it hard rock. The Heavy Metal designation was not used by us kids until some years later. But the elements for it all was already out there. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly also had influence but did a bit broader range of songs. But just from their names you can tell the zeitgeist was building. Deep Purple was hugely influential and on a parallel track to Black Sabbath. I still have the original LPs (vinyl) I bought in the early 1970's.
Hi guys, not to argue the point, but right at the same time was this group called Led Zeppelin, as well as another called Deep Purple. Along with Black Sabbath, these three bands were the Unholy Trinity of Rock, and they were all three of them Heavy Metal. War Pigs is off of the album Paranoid, which was their second album, their first album was titled Black Sabbath.

I forget who said it, maybe Frank Zappa...but the saying is there is no metal riff in existence that Toni Iomi (Black sabbath's Guitarist) didn't already put in a song back in the day with Black sabbath. EVERY song had so many different riffs as you will soon see.
I have often heard Blue Cheer described as having the first metal songs
Zeppelin and Deep Purple were more blues based hard rock , not metal. Zeppelin was blues based, Purple at one point even played with a symphony. The difference is the darker lyrics and the faster pace of the music.
I don't know why I enjoy watching people experience these kinds of things, but it makes me happy. I discovered Sabbath when I was 13, then come to find out that my dad listened to him when he was in high school. I was mad that he'd never played them for me.
N.I.B was the first song on the first album: Black Sabbath (a self titled album) Paranoid (the album War Pigs is on) is the second? album, with 3 of the most famous Sabbath songs on it : Paranoid, Iron Man and War Pigs
Also the guy was crying at the start because this was one of the last shows on Black Sabbath's final, this is end tour.
The only non-original member there was the drummer, because Bill Ward refused to go on the tour. Geezer Butler, Ozzy and Toni Iommi were there from the start
Also, react to either Dead Skin Mask, or War Ensemble by Slayer
the first song on black sabbath is black sabbath
This was a protest song about Vietnam.
It is an anti-war song, but not specifically about Vietnam. The band is British and I heard Ozzy himself say it was not about Vietnam. There was a world-wide anti-war sentiment amongst us young folk back then. And this song was just a reflection of that.
War Pigs is on Sabbath's second album, "Paranoid"
Recently found you guys, and loving it! I am a Sabbath fan since birth. Thanks for this one!! 😈😎😈
Every guitarist will know how great guitar riffs are in this song, so animate. They are the ones who created metal genre.
You guys rock
I was fortunate enough to have seen them LIVE back in the day..... (Late 70's)
M/F***ING REAL MUSIK, KIDZ!!!
Listen and luv it!
When I was in the Army 1998 - 2004 we use to run cadence to this. Good times
If you've ever been to an Ozzy show then you know. It melts your face and blast your ears.
Close! War Pigs was the first song of the second album which came out the same year as the self-titled first album. Definitely need you guys to check out the first song of the first album Black Sabbath. Another one of those where the band name is the album name is the first song name. Enjoy guys!
Just called Hollywood’s new fave song Planet Caravan
My father, old school metalhead, got me listening to this from birth and I followed in his footsteps.
Been listening to this great music for 46+ years. Best Acid music along with Pink Floyd we would listen to. What an acid trip that was. By the way, he is currently not able to tour due to his health.
Oh watching Floyd's The Wall 😁
Three of the original members on stage here, Ozzy, Geezer (bass) and Tony (guitar. The drummer is Tommy Clufetos who had been playing with Ozzy for several tours.
Damn. This version grooves. Hard. ✌🏻
ikr....these guys are epic
That last section (the part the crowd is singing) gets me misty sometimes, too. There are just certain riffs that have a "vibe," you know? That's one of 'em.
50 years of music from those musicians, this was their last tour and show. Damn right tears were shed that night. All around the world.
"War Pigs" is off of Sabbath's sophomore release. Paranoid (originally meant to be titled: War Pigs.)
Both their debut album: Black Sabbath and its follow-up (which this song is on) Paranoid were released in 1970.
Most bands released an album every six months in those years.
Yep.
Large enthusiasm everytime, does not front. subscribed
glad to have u here
Well done dudes.
Black Sabbath. One of my favorites from my youth. Also Check out some Judas Priest...Sad Wings of Destiny
This was black Sabbath's last tour with Ozzy ozzburne as the lead singer . That's probably why the crowd was so emotional.
But when Ozzy came out the whole place exploded.
first song of the first sabbath albums is callled black sabbath, war pigs is from their album paranoid ,great video guys
I saw Ozzy & Zak with Antrax in the 80s. Love this band & his solo work. His voice is amazing live!
Put your black light on and enjoy.... Remember my Mom giving me money to go to the mall and i came back with a black light and a Sabbath comp with Ozzy. My life started to change after that.
Their bassist, Geezer Butler, is their mastermind lyricist. He’s a really great bassist and a genius with words.
The showmanship is incredible!
You guy's are so cool, and I like that you have different reaction videos. Keep up the good work.
Seen them about 6 years ago... best ever
I didn't even know this live show. Imagine following the band and then seeing these guys rocking out so hard. One. Last. Time... (Maybe)
I can totally understand some people in the audience crying.
Born and bred brummie, it's always nice to see one of our own getting praise.
Sabbath.. Falling off the the edge of the world.. With Ronnie James DIO
Great channel. I'm in Chamblee (Atlanta). I love how you reacted to this, you got it.
this was off their second album "Paranoid". The original title of the album was supposed to be War Pigs which if you see the cover of that album the artwork still reflects that. The name War Pigs is actually a play on the "Walpurgisnacht" which is when the witches would meet. I believe Wiccans still practice that night
ICONICISM 4 life!
This song came out when i was 16 we used to blast it in the car, drove the old people crazy
You guys get it, head bangin' and everything.
Well done gentlemen. Thank you.
They created the genre Heavy Mental. There’s Toni Iommi riffs and stolen Iommi riffs. Bill Ward was an amazing drummer 🤘🏽
I mean these guys could be our grand parents actually ^^, they are nailing it! Awesome.
Great reaction guys.. love your videos 💜
You guys gotta do the Paris 1970 live version!!! Mind blowing!!!!
Tony Iomi is amazing on guitar. Lucky enough to see sabbath twice at ozzfest about 20 years ago, and now, i feel old.
its amazing what music can do to a person. the emotion it can bring, especially when seeing a band that has influenced your life.
The line "begging mercies for their sins (pause and and drum riff) Satan , laughing, spreads his wings"
Is so fucking hardcore 🤘😈
More than hardcore...Satan is laughing, because S/He is fully aware they WON'T receive any mercy. Because they gave none. How fitting to the Times we are now living in...sadly.
you can see the finger tips Iommi chopped off on his right hand as a teen when there is a close up. He used thimbles as a substitute
Yes! Sabbath kicks ass! You guys should jam Planet Caravan,it's very Tool-esc? In my opinion?
Back then we just called it hard rock. The Heavy Metal designation was not used by us kids until some years later. But the elements for it all was already out there. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly also had influence but did a bit broader range of songs. But just from their names you can tell the zeitgeist was building. Deep Purple was hugely influential and on a parallel track to Black Sabbath. I still have the original LPs (vinyl) I bought in the early 1970's.
Not only was this live
It was the last live show ever that’s why everyone was crying
During this video I watched rappers become rockers, respect
Hi guys, not to argue the point, but right at the same time was this group called Led Zeppelin, as well as another called Deep Purple. Along with Black Sabbath, these three bands were the Unholy Trinity of Rock, and they were all three of them Heavy Metal.
War Pigs is off of the album Paranoid, which was their second album, their first album was titled Black Sabbath.
Good one guys!
thanks, ozzy is a god
I saw them do this live at ozfest '99.... Before the reunion tour. So awesome.
Love how deep you all get
Woooooooooooooo
War Pigs is the first song off their second album Paranoid.
FYI A Helter Skelter ia an old UK fairground ride, basically a big slide :-) . (see here) ua-cam.com/video/bokcv8sKM0o/v-deo.html Hence the line " When I get to the bottom, I go back to the top"
