      @Ronald williams I love Jimi Hendrix, but I wouldn't classify his music as "heavy metal". It's more "acid metal" I think. Who knows with all these genre labels? Like Billy Joel says "It's all rock and roll to me!" Besides, what do I know? I'm just some clown on the internet!

    • @profanepersonality

    • @profanepersonality
      @profanepersonality 2 роки тому +1

      @Ronald williams yes they are. Your opinion is wrong. Like I said it was documented since the 70's. They are one third of the unholy trinity that started metal. They just did not like the moniker, because they thought it was an insult. When they understood what it actually meant, they accepted it.

    • @wreckingKREW1
      @wreckingKREW1 2 роки тому +3

      @Ronald williams
      Hendrix was NOT metal. Acid soaked Blues is more accurate. But really,Jimi was a genre unto himself.
      As for Sabbath,they and Iron Butterfly,whom none of you mentioned,are pretty much universally regarded as the originators of "metal".
      You're right as far as most anyone I've ever known or known of is concerned as to Zeppelin and also Deep Purple not being "metal". Hard blues rock,sure. But there IS a difference between that and metal and Zeppelin,Purple and yes,Jimi,all land on the side of the former. Sabbath is the latter.

    Bill Ward was INSANE on drums - one of my favorite of his drum tracks is Black Sabbath's "Children of the Grave" - he has a regular drum part, but then at certain times he adds a second track that just fits the song perfectly, and sounds like it pans from one ear to the other when wearing headphones.

When he came back, they trimmed the band down to a four-piece and began working on the music style that would become "Black Sabbath".

    Tony Iommi could definitely write some good riffs. Jimmi Hendrix and some other guitarists may have been considered GOATS for their technical playing ability but tony could really write them all away. War Pigs had some change ups but sort of subtle they made sense. some of their songs really have a lot of major changes in them, if it was modern day they would have said hey instead of putting all these riffs in 1 song lets save them and make 5 different songs out of this. Tony was basically inventing a new genre of music and wrote so many sounds to fit within it at the same time, so much so that most metal bands today can't hardly write a song without at least a little bit of a Sabbath riff in there somewhere. as for the rest Bill Ward was just amazing on drums, and Geezer butler's bass lines were too often a bit understated in the sound would love to hear how it would sound with the bass brought out a bit more in the mixing. and as for Ozzy his voice is just unique and iconic. overall, just an amazing band ahead of their time. suggested songs, 'supernaut', 'wheels of confusion', 'a national acrobat', 'spiral architect'

    If no one has informed you the guitarist Tony Iommi lost two of his finger tips when a press came down and he pulled his hand back, he was going to quit his job then that happened. So he thought he would never play again a friend brought over an album of this one guitarist who only had two fingers and Iommi figured if he could do it so could he. So he took a plastic bottle and heated the plastic and made tips and then he had to come up with a way to help him grip the strings so he put a piece of leather on the plastic so he could bend the strings up or down. This man has inspired so many of us he is known by many names The Icon, The Legend, The Riff Master, The Master of the Riff and The Godfather of Heavy Metal. Once you have listen to his early stuff and then compare it to his later work you will understand why he is loved by his fans.

    To give u the info on Black Sabbath... the band defined the 'heavy' rock genre after Led Zeppelin debuted in 1969. Sabbath debuted in 1970 and stormed the world by 1971. Black Sabbath was Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) & Bill Ward (drums)... 'Warpigs' was the original title of their 2nd album in 1970, but the anti-war theme of the song during the Vietnam war prompted their record label to change the title to 'Paranoid' (which was the big single from the album)
    Guitarist Tony Iommi was left-handed, and he lost the tips of his 2 fingers in a factory mishap, so to play guitar again, he made plastic tips to play chords, and used lighter banjo strings on his guitar... that gave him a signature sound that was unique... an ominous, heavy tone that define Black Sabbath's sound. By 1969, the band was inspired by early Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, started to write their own music, attempting to scare everyone by singing about doom and dark aspects of life. Their 1970 debut album 'Black Sabbath' was a shock to the music scene and was a huge success... as was 2nd album 'Paranoid' the same year. Black Sabbath continued to record, tour and push boundaries musically w/ 5 platinum-selling records... In 1976, Sabbath went in a different direction that singer Ozzy Osbourne wasn't happy with. By 1978, drugs, alcohol and dysfunction derailed Black Sabbath, and Ozzy was fired in 1979... he would pursue a successful solo career in 1980.
    Tony Iommi kept Sabbath going "post-Ozzy" w/ singer Ronnie James Dio in 1980 and recorded the 'Heaven & Hell' album, which brought success back to Black Sabbath. However, drummer Bill Ward left the band cos he didn't like playing w/ Dio... Then, Ronnie Dio left Sabbath in 1982 after 2 albums to form his own band Dio in 1983.
    Black Sabbath recorded 1 album 'Born again' in 1983 w/ Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan, but the band split in 1984. Tony Iommi opted to bring Black Sabbath back in 1986 w/ no original members, but was struggling by 1991. Ronnie James Dio & Geezer Butler returned to Black Sabbath briefly in 1992 for the 'Dehumanizer' album. Iommi kept recording new Sabbath albums until 1995.
    Finally, the original Sabbath reunited in 1997... at first w/ just Ozzy, Tony & Geezer... but soon got Bill Ward back as well, and began touring again.
    In 2013, Black Sabbath released the '13' album (Bill Ward declined to participate) and Sabbath toured until their 'farewell' tour in 2016 and ended their career in 2017.

The first of many times seeing them, as soon as the lights went down, the sirens started and the place went nuts. Instant goose bumps. To hear Tony Iommi at his best and the band in debut of something we had never heard before in 1970, try The suite which used to be on side 2, do Bit of Finger, Sleeping Village, Warning. That suite of music is unreal and some of the most furious blues - metal lead guitar you will ever hear. Enjoy! 🎸

    You guys will never know how hard this hit in 1970 . There was no metal yet . This was so much heavier than Zep or Purple . Their lyrics were not about love or sex but about war and darker stuff like witches and black masses. Anti war songs were usually friendly folky tunes. Not like this : angry and dark and loud . There had been others but Sabbath were the first who sold massive amounts of albums . So sad you will never know how it was when we were your age. Cold war was threatening and Vietnam was on TV every single day . In Holland people reacted rather anti American. It was a hectic time. We really were afraid that soon ww3 would break out . The end of Hippie days was there , scary times approaching.

Birmingham from where the band originated still had many bomb damaged sites , making the place look bleak , which I think is reflected in the music . The band also saw the after effects of the Vietnam war on USTroops which gave rise to the track “ Hand of Doom” which is highly recommended.

    Having only witnessed Black Sabbath once live in concert, I can report that Drummer Bill Ward treats the drums as if they owe him a lot of money, and have for some time. Lefty Guitarist Tony Iommi is a total riff master of the highest order, on his last day at a real job he cut two finger tips off at a metal working shop in Birmingham, England, he now wears plastic tips on his fingers when he plays, Bassist Geezer Butler wrote this song and most of the other Black Sabbath songs and singer Ozzy Osbourne is now an icon of all things metal (OzzFest, The Osbournes, The Blizzard of Ozz, etc), and he does killer vocals and stage antics.

    In the last 50 years, I have heard War Pigs more times than any other song. The whole album is my all-time favorite. The influence Black Sabbath had on music cannot be overstated.

    Bill Ward, an absolute legend, was the man throwing down on the kit for this record and for all of Black Sabbath's records & tours
    If you like him, you'll really like a Drummer by the name of Mike Portnoy

    Since you've reacted to this, I recommend "Black No. 1" by a band called Type O Negative. They've got way more songs than just the one, but yeah. It'll be worth your time, believe me.

    So many great Sabbath songs guys. "Hand of Doom", "Killing Yourself To Live", "Symptom of the Universe", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Sweet Leaf", "Children of the Grave", "Fairies Wear Boots", "N.I.B", "Black Sabbath", "Supernaut", "Tomorrow's Dream", Snowblind", "After Forever", "Lord of this World". The list goes on and on. And those are just a handful from the classic line up days of the 70's Sabbath era. So many more too. Their entire first six albums from the early to mid 70's are flawless (in my opinion). They did some killer stuff in the "Heaven and Hell" days when Ronnie James Dio took over on vocals from Ozzy too.

    Black Sabbath is a great group with a mix of many styles. You should check out the song "Hand of Doom" another great song. The guitar player and bass players riffs along with Bill Wards drumming are great. This band started in the late 70s so when you put the music you just heard with war pigs in that time frame they are crazy good with the instrumentation and playing. Its hard to believe this music was created that long ago but still holds up to today for this syle.
