@@metaspencer , ya i'm building almost the exact same thing but need to try and maximize on my storage. Great video, love all the climbing stuff in the background!
As the owner of an 80yo house, built with recycled 2x4s, I just want to say that you’re right - a real dimensional 2x4 is a thing of beauty. It can also be a pain when you’re remodeling! Your stairs look great!!!
So glad I found this, I'm right now confusing myself with calculations for my little loft stairway (which I have found myself referring to as the stairway from hell.) Love the build as you go method ! The dog is great as well, kind of like the canary in the mine, if the pooch zips right up and down you know you've got a shot , but if there's any struggle at all you know some redesigning is needed. Thank you, wish me luck !
I have something similar and was trying so hard to figure out the spiral staircase, I walked and walked up pretend stairs in circles. And finally decided to go with a modular kit instead of a spiral. Thanks for making me feel not so crazy lol
excellent woodcraft, camerawork, and editing! facing a similar build challenge and this has given me some food for thought. does seem the stacked box voids could be opened up and put to use as storage. great work!
nice vid...nice solution - what were the final dims on the risers and treads...and what is horizontal projection - ? how is coming down this steep stair - reminds me of netherlands.
Hi! I really loved your video. I am building a small cabin and my dad and I are designing essentially the same staircase. Your video was a great tutorial.
nice glad were i live there is no rule on stair sizes but that is a nice flight of stairs i would have used the void spaces as a sort of storage my self :)
Managing small space is so inspirational. I have the same problem right now: the Total Rise is 98 inches and total tread is 50 inches. How would you design the stairs?
It all depends on your materials and the nitty gritty of your space, but it's sounding like 9-11 stairs depending on how it all lays out. Spiral all the way up?
We've considered it for years but kind of like the style of it as it runs through the three floors of the house. To take it down would be messy but likely worth it.
If Milly approved, that's good enough..I like those curved stairs as well, they took care of that, (yea I know ya like it, move on already) Ladder and made falling down the Ladder, (yea ya said ya really liked it) less of an issue. Very functional as well for those 4 legged inhabitants. Good use of limited space !!
This video was incredibly helpful, I have to get some attic stairs and mine wont be this tight, but the techniques and design decisions have helped me considerably!
It's hard to tell but looks like you cut through structural cross members, and no longer have a direct support between the chimney and a wall on two connecting sides? How is that working out now that it's been in place for a couple years
Yeah the previous owners did a wild "remodel" removing several cross members. Fortunately, with the gambrel roof, load is largely directed to the base of the gambrel form (Dutch Colonial). So the house remains sound ... I ran this stay case up between the cross ties
This is amazing work! What was the area dimensions of floor space required in doing this? Would love to be able to do something this as my space is quite tight
about 4' x 4' but we've sold that house since then so I don't have the measurements ... just do the math on your stair treads and you'll see if it'll work out
okay I love that you did it on the fly so to speak, and I used your idea as my own on my loft stairs but, I was wondering, did you eventually take out the wire and add something more pleasing to the eye? The reason that I ask is because you have such a nice looking stair case, it deserves a more creative finish to make it super cool. I'm not putting it down I love what you did, but it looks so great that the end needs some more creativeness to really make it pop, maybe wood stringers that flow with the stairs? But thanks for you help it will totally help me do my stairs, which I have been thinking about for a very long time. Thanks for your video, it helped me tremendously, Very Cool. Sincerely, Christi Carl-Galla Huntington Beach, Southern California USA Rock On!!!
Could anybody could comment on whether this would fly in the UK? or would the building regulations consider this unsuitable? I though it was pretty neat!
I liked what you were doing all the way up to the point right before you started putting the wire in for the railing. It doesn’t even go at the house but that’s my opinion.
I can see your point and opinion there man. Makes sense. The house originally had a modernish upstairs and no railings whatsoever, so the wire idea was to keep things kind of open but safe. If I were to do it over again I'd probably weld up a railing.
Stairs look amazing...But here's a thought, that "wasted" space of the lower steps could have been used as storage, maybe with drawers or a cubby door...Just a thought...
Can you come to my house and build those steps for me? I have a similar tight space and my contractor was well not so talented so I have a loft bed with a step ladder right now,
@@metaspencer I live in Southern California Shortly after I watched your video I came across these stairs, pretty amazing don't you think. Well, maybe you could be a phone consultant to the guy who's doing my stairs instead. What are your billable conference rates? I would LoL but I am only half-joking. pin.it/DskoMwX
These stairs are now on my bucket list to make!! What a great guide! MUCH nicer than store bought spirals! 🙌🏻👌🏻💞
It worked out pretty well for us. Big thanks!
Love it. Looks great maybe try using all that dead space inside the steps for some drawers or hidden secret storage.
agree, storage in there would be ideal ... working on it. thanks for checking it out!

Excellent! All 2x10s

Maybe you could use the ladder on the bus like if you build a deck up top? Fine work, you know those boxes are never coming down.
I’m definitely using the ladder somewhere ... love that thing

Yep, wasted space in the way I did it, but solid and worked in some other ways. Good luck with your project!
nice vid...nice solution - what were the final dims on the risers and treads...and what is horizontal projection - ? how is coming down this steep stair - reminds me of netherlands.
Reminds us of some stairs we've walked in Europe, too. Final height was a bit higher than traditional stairs, but you get used to it really quick.
Horizontal depends on where you are on the stairs: the wrapping stairs are much wider on the outside (13" or more)
Beautiful work!!
Big thanks!!
nice one. The only critique is that now you have to step over a quite high step in order to get to the room behind the staircase.
There is another door to that room, fortunately! :)

Spiral is nice ... central post is dead center in the space
Did you think about tearing the flue/chimney out to get more space? I know it is a mess, but I tore one out on a similar project. Good Video.
We've considered it for years but kind of like the style of it as it runs through the three floors of the house. To take it down would be messy but likely worth it.

Oh good! And best of luck with your project!
Could you share the schematics and dimensions of the pieces you made ? Would that be doable ?
Sorry, but I don't work from schematics ... I just measured specifically to fit the space which is what you'll likely need to do too
It's hard to tell but looks like you cut through structural cross members, and no longer have a direct support between the chimney and a wall on two connecting sides? How is that working out now that it's been in place for a couple years

It was about 4'x4' as I recall :)
