The right to freedom of speech does not exist without the complementary right to disagree which also does not exist without the concurrent right to make disagreeable statements and speech. Jeebers can say what the fuck ever he wants and does not have to be accountable to anything except any better ideas or reason from other free individual citizens. Libel and defamation are the only true legal footnotes, other than that him, like anyone else can say what the fuck they want.

So we defund them forcing them to compete for a share of the privatised market, in which case 1) they go under as all without sufficient funding do, or 2) they seek subscriptions from an audience who agrees with the thing's they print. Legacy media is in serious decline. Heavy public funding is required because it has little commercial advertising value. Switched-on people simply wouldn’t watch Newsroom.

Tried logging a complaint about TVNZ woke coverage of cricket with new names for our main cities that I had never heard until last year. But it was something the complaints people say I can't complain about. I guess TVNZ is laying the Maori on thick to have a real go at our new government. Why doesn't the broadcasting minister do their job and require TVNZ to call Auckland Auckland, Christchurch Christchurch and Wellington Wellington? Note, I don't mind Tauranga, Wanganui and Whangarei not having an English name.

In 1984 I was a youth (i.e., there relatively un-noticed) at a party which was attended by people from mainstream media (TV1, TV2 and TV3 and some NZH journalists), they were in the kitchen around a table having beers/wines discussing how they hated Muldoon and were deliberately going to slant their reporting to negative effect in order to spoil his election chances... Winston is correct and it looks like it still goes on... the fact that they have done this for so long makes it even more reprehensible...

@z8486 Well, a very large cross-section of the reporters were there. It was 40 years ago... We can nitpick the details but the story is not discredited because I was there and I am still aware of some of the reporters involved. It made such an impression on me at the time bc suddenly I recognised that all these people were just in it for their careers and ideology and since then it has I have been circumspect of what I here in the news...

Agree, a public investigation is required. We all see the way they present their content to the NZ public, it feels and sounds wrong, hope their contracts aren't renewed and that their day's of perpetuating the rubbish reporting are numbered.

And in regard to a section of the Tax supported Media Newsroom seeking to cancel our Deputy Prime Minister that is just horrific. You are right Sean, that particular media outlet should have the taxpayers contribution’s of $2 million cancelled immediately.

Been with redacted from their start, all my subs audience's have grown several hundred percent providing truth with link's to source material, but redacted has just blown the doors off that growth, with millions of subs, Russell brand, was already big, but he's almost 7 million now, people want the truth, and many now realise you need to defeat an algorithm, and then sort the chaff from the wheat.

I watched "news" programmes for a long time thinking I was in the minority in seeing through the BS and being frustrated that this nonsense continues to be pushed unabated. Thinly veiled agendas and supressing "real" stories, labelling people who question the legacy media as conspiracy theorists. It has to stop, and it's people like Sean with their platforms and audiences who can stop the rot. I hope the tide turns, but for the last year and going forward I just simply don't indulge legacy media in any form. It's the only way to avoid the extreme frustration. Please lets return to good honest journalism reporting the facts, unbiased and without favour or prejudice.

I listened to The Detail podcast that Shawn is referring to. Jennings was not proposing to 'de-platform' Winston Peters, rather he was pointing out that countering potential falsehoods may be pointless a) because it has already spread through social media b) there's so much of it and c) it actually may have the opposite effect of people like WP using such criticism as proof of a conspiracy by the so-called legacy media against him when there's no evidence of this. I think the conclusion that they came to was that they still needed to challenge what they saw as falsehoods even if it risked inflaming the situation. I would suggest people actually listen to the whole podcast rather than the soundbite that Sean played.
"Flasehoods" = information that goes against the government sanctioned narrative.
