Going 12 rounds with Ali would be bloody horrible. But having the legacy for the rest of your life of "I went 12 full rounds with Ali" - well that would be something special. Well done Aussie Joe.

Plus the way every other fighter loved him and respected him. Norton, Foreman, many others considered Ali their best friend. Chuvalo, Lyle, Quarry, Shavers, Holmes, all of them speak about the impact Ali had on them as a boxer, person, friend, and human being.

What strikes me most when watching Ali was his patience and timing. A man with true composure and an almost mystical self-assuredness. He knew what to do and when to do it and would not be hurried nor deterred. And you can see this all through his career. The same man, even when his body gave out.

Bugner could hang with just about anybody. I only saw him fight once in person in a second round TKO controversial loss to Ernie Shavers. But, he had skills and heart and may be among the most underrated heavyweights ever. Somehow, he reminded me of Mildenberger...always just good enough to be a top contender and give anybody a good fight, but always just a little short of being good enough to take the title.

People here in the UK are a lot more appreciative of Bugner’s ability in retrospect. But I am old enough to remember how scathing they were of him at the time. I think the reason was that people were initially excited at the prospect of a possible world champ, only to be disappointed and frustrated when we never quite managed it. He was solid fighter who often needed a good opponent to bring out his best.

Better performance than I expected from a young Joe Bugner against a resurgent Ali. Bugner took some beautiful combinations from Ali that would have put most people down. @@trinihammer Yes, but we have to take into account the amount of fights that Robinson fought within a given time.
. He turned professional in 1940 at the age of 19 and by 1951 had a professional record of 128-1-2 with 84 knockouts. From 1943 to 1951 Robinson went on a 91-fight unbeaten streak, the third-longest in professional boxing history. Robinson held the world welterweight title from 1946 to 1951, and won the world middleweight title in the latter year. He was fighting 12 times a year, that's insane where a fighter today averages about 3 fights a year.
If we just go by the stats Robinson is the greatest, some historians have him as the greatest.
However, this is quantity vs quality. It's always a hard debate. Ali has been the greatest I've seen in my lifetime. "Poetry in motion" is my best description of him. He was just so unique in his boxing, his defense, tough chin, perfect body, mental toughness and game. He had the most impact in boxing. He was an amazing fighter.

Agreed...unfortunately, as you point out, Holmes didn't fight the "real" Ali.....he fought a man who had stayed too long, and sadly had the beginnings of his Parkinsons......I firmly believe THIS Ali could have taken him.. I really wish Ali had retired for good after the Foreman fight in '74....at that point, he had nothing further to prove, and (maybe) he would have avoided his illness. (Granted, he'd already taken plenty of shots....but...who knows)

@@Tull1996 agreed, especially after the 3rd Frazier fight in '75. I watched the '80 fight vs Holmes again recently and Ali actually tagged him with some rights, and rolled with punches pretty good a couple of times. The straight right was an Ali weapon for years and Holmes was vulnerable to right hands, I think if Ali really lets his hands go he would decision Holmes. I see Holmes in pursuit and getting tagged on the way in. Ali did look wobbly even before the first bell, honestly he looked drunk ha. Of course he was a shot fighter long before '80 but if he wasn't messed up on those pills or whatever I think Ali would've won a few rounds. If I remember right he almost won the 7th round I think, he was moving and jabbing to the body but I think Holmes landed some shots towards the end of the round. I don't think Ali threw anything the last two rounds. My respect for Holmes went way up seeing him obviously holding back on Ali the last two rounds. He saw Ali wasn't firing back and a sitting duck, but no need to humiliate him by going all out, but just coast to an easy decision win. Sad seeing Bundini trying to keep Dundee from stopping it, I think he still had faith in Ali that he could pull out a miracle, probably in denial about Ali being shot as a fighter.

The more I see re-runs of Ali's fights, the more I realise the man could (and would) take a direct and very hard punch if it meant he could then land a couple of his own, or that he even just kept taking them to annoy and tire his opponent, not just as he did quite brilliantly against Foreman.
Alas, while he took the short term plaudits and praise, it does seem taking those hits cost him dearly later.

And, I was at the Rumble in the Jungle too!!,🙂, And, jjjjust before He cut loose, another Englishman!!, sitting next to me said, "OH OOHH!! ALI'S ABOUT TO CUT LOOSE PETE!!, HERE WE GO!!,😳 AND, I CAN STILL!! ,SEE ALI'S EYES WIDEN FULL OF ADRENALINE FOLKS!!, AND, HE JUST WENT.., TAP, BANG!!,BANG,!! BANG!,! AND!!, IT WAS ALL OVER!! And the hilarious Englishman, sitting next to me, after we'd inroduged ourselves, before the bout, said" HOLLLLLEY FOOK EN CHRIST PETE!!,😳 GEORGE IS IN," MORE STRIFE THAN A PREGNANT NUN!!,😆😆😆😆AND, HE'S OUT, LIKE A FOOK IN PHILLIP'S LIGHTBULB PEEETE!!,😳 AND, I can STILL SEE, the ref pat/ or, "gently take hold" of Ali's gloves, as Ali stood over the fallen Foreman, because Ali, STILL!! had the audacity to have, FAR MORE!!, Enough time, TO HAVE!! at least!! HAVE LANDED ANOTHER 3 OR 4 More hits on George, because he was, STAGGERED AND,FALL ING..AND, NOT QUITE.. FALL EN!!, IF U KNOW WHAT I MEAN,!!??😳 AND, it'd v all bn well within, the rules of boxing, IFFFF ALI;! DID LAND A, "FEW MORE", AND, I saw, and heard, the ref say TO Ali, Well done son, and, good sportsman'ship on u're part!!,🙂 And, "we BOTH know, he's had enough" ,why? The man sitting directly behind me, was a deaf mute, and, I asked him? "What DID!!,, the ref just say mate,?🤔 and, he told me exactly what I just told u ppl!!, And, I was staying at the same Hotel, as the Englishman, and, the local s.p bookmaker, or, illegal betting agent, Walked into the bar, That night, and, he looked around, and came over to the bar, and, paid the Englishman, the U.S,$7000 he owed him, because he backed Ali, and for $1000, at 6 To 1!!😳, The night before in the pub, and, I was standing directly behind Ali's back, after he ko'd Foreman, hence y, I could see, and, "half hear", what the ref, said to Ali, and, the deaf mute man, was also staying at the ssme hotel, and, he had 35 PC of his hearing, and, he had his 22 Yr old, totally deaf and mute, son with him Anyway, I just thought I'd share that with u folks, and, I adored, Ali, Frazier and Foreman too!! And, never forget, Ali was going on 34, when he flogged Foreman, and George was only 24!!, In the prime of his boxing carreer!! And, he WAS THEE WORLD HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPION!! , AND, I thinnnk he was undefeated when he founght Ali!!, So, all an all, Joe Bugner, done a very good job!, Fought Ali two 2xs, and went the full fight, vs Ali Both times too!! Lastly, Joe Bugner and Ali, were VERY GOOD SPORT'S ABOUT BOTH OF THEIR FIGHTS!! Both, before and, after Both of their bouts too!!🙂All the best, to u all, and ure loved okes too folks, Kind Regards, Pete.
