  • KTM 790 adventure R review from KNOX
A few months ago we featured the KTM 790 Adventure R on the Knox armour channel when I got out to the KTM all new adventure Experience in wales. This is the follow up review to the 790 Adventure R where we have had the bike for a few weeks out in the Lake District where the Knox factory is based and we’ve spent quite a lot more time getting our heads around the bike and how it behaves both on the road and off it.
To see our original review at the Sweetlamb complex, please see • KTM 790 adventure R re... .
The 790 Adventure is a truly great bike and while in some ways might be a small compromise to a fully road biased machine, the KTM 790 Adventure R does a fantastic job of combining true off-road capabilities with some great on road manners. All in all, we love the bike and think most people will too.
The full specs and listing to the bike are available on www.ktm.com/gb/travel/790-adv....
KTM also do a more road biased model, the KTM 790 Adventure. This is based on the same model but has a different specification less suited to off road work.
We also compare the 790 Adventure R to the new Yamaha Tenere, • Yamaha Tenere 700 | Fi... and the BMW 850gs which we are hoping to get our hands on over the next couple of months. However, considering the specifications of these other models, the KTM 790 adventure R is likely to be the best mid-weight adventure bike for off road.

THX for this very nice review.
I've been looking for the holy grail of an allroad motorcycle, knowing I'll allways fail.
Had the KTM950 Adventure (a brute but too top heavy) and the 690 Enduro R (only 155kg but too small for my big frame). Just did not work.
Also still have a revamped R100GS (only 185kg's) which works good, but not at heights (carburettor).
When I saw this bike I kind of "felt" it to be the best it could get.....
I picked up mine just a week ago. No need for the 890.
Another bashplate and some "orange power parts" make it the perfect bike for me.
I would not take it to Mongolia because of all the electronics (have my old GS for that, if it ever comes to that), but for Europe/US....yes!
Swapped the tyres for Mitas E-09 Dakar which are more off road biased.
I'll be Alps/gravel 50/50, but looking at this video, I'll have to visit the Lake District as well!
    THX again.

    THX for the extensive review.
Footage is great. Landscape as well.
For me, it's the actual information that makes your review really stand out.
    I own a 790 ADV R: use it 50/50 off/on road (Mitas E09). It'll be my allroad travelling bike.
And it's the electronics that decided my choice for the KTM.
Not as a gimmick to show to my pals, but als actual safety net / enhancement to my driving skills.
THX again and keep it up.

Great review. My 790 R just past 4500 miles with no issues. Cruise control is awesome and well worth getting. The windscreen could be better at high speeds, Karoo 3s are great on road but don’t like sand, and at 80mph my GPS shows 75mph. I don’t think there is a way to calibrate the speedometer. My gas gauge works fine, it shows full until 1/2 tank like it is supposed to and takes a few minutes to adjust if the bike was leaning. The bike gets 50-60 mpg and can keep up with sport bikes on the curves, and it can’t do motorcross like an EXC but is capable of almost anything. Rally throttle is very aggressive, and traction control is amazing. No other adventure bike comes even close!

Good video for me. Missed it first time around. I am thinking of buying a 790R in northern Thailand. I had an Adventure 950 for two years in the mid-00s. Superb bike. I see this as its successor. The bigger ones have got too big and heavy.

  • @sk2283
    @sk2283 4 роки тому +1

very good review, good 'riders' perspective. The main thing that hinders all the Adventure bikes is weight - they are all round 200 ~ 230 kilos which is far too heavy off road, compare that to an Enduro bike which is 100 Kilo's I don't know why they are so heavy? if they could put these out at 150 to 160 Kilos they would be much better off road. Really they are tourers suitable for gravel roads. that said the KTM is the one you would take every time ! lovely bike just heavy !

Good review mates. The brake is not bad, actually the front tire is setting the limit.Swapping the Karoos to more road like adventure tires will improve performance. Still, there is no easy way to get around 90/90. 21.

What can you say about the S version? I’m gonna be using it more on road, but sometimes will use it off-road too, mostly light gravel roads. Is the suspension on the S more than enough? Is the quick shifter worth getting? Thanks.

    • @KnoxArmour
      @KnoxArmour  4 роки тому +1

I think if you are using it more on road and just light gravel roads, the 790 Adventure (not the R version) is more than enough. QUickshifter + seems to be optional and it depends how you like it, personally even with a quick-shifter, I use the clutch to downshift as its a lot smoother. Just personal preference basically. Thanks, Aaron Knox

I can verify his comment as I own a 790 adventure (Non-R). And I too ride 95% on street and sometimes on gravel and dirt roads I ride 2up almost 100% of the time. The suspension on the non r is sorta stiff(maybe cause it’s only 2weeks old) but other than that bike is great and suspension hold up really well. My bike also came with a quick shifter from the dealer but I alway use the clutch

22:15 More power? Wth, 100hp for a dual sport bias motorcycle which is meant to be lighter? Like you said before, the customer base asked for this. If you want power you've got the 1290. Can't beat that when it comes to power.

Ronald, the bike is great onroad. I’ve just traded my1290 SAS in and bought this 790R. After 4000km’s I think it’s the best balanced bike I’ve ever ridden and I’ve owned many and have ridden many more. With balanced I mean the total package: engine, suspension, throttle response, balance when cornering slow and fast.
      Offroad it performs equally impressive.
2 things I don’t like: tyre noise by the Karoo 3’s which are really great tyres.
And second: turbulence of the windscreen.
Both are things you can fix.
