    Finally, I had the chance to ride the new KTM 790 Adventure R. Unfortunately during my test ride the microphone of my helmet camera stop working in some stage, but at least I have some audio. I have to confess that KTM did a really good job with this model. It is powerful, light, aggressive, and probably ready to race as they said. The engine provides 95 H.P which is more than enough for travel, commute, dirt roads, or just for fun. The petrol tank is 20 l and the consumption is about 5 l per 100 km. With a few words, it is a great machine and I am sure it will bring many smiles to the new owner's faces. I personally do not really like the design. The power is way more than I need and the price is just too high. Reliability is still an issue, so I prefer to stay away from the brand. So my opinion is that it is a great bike to ride, but not to own and travel the world.

    I tested the 790 S, found it very fun to ride, was very close to buy it, and finally bought an Africa Twin standard with mechanical gearbox. I did not consider testing the R version, and I will probably never ask to test the new Africa Twin Adventure sports. I am 1m76 and I feel both the 790 R and the A.T Adventure Sports are too high for me. I could manage the extra high of those bikes on tarmac and without load, but please think what the situation will be with full load. Whatever you do, the cargo will higher the center of gravity. In both cases, KTM 790 and Africa Twin, I find the the cheaper versions (S and the standard A.T. respectively) better values for the money if the majority of the travel is on paved roads. Still they can pass sections of rugged trails if necessary.
    The 790 S has the same engine and brakes as the R, it has a higher screen, it has rally mode if you want it, it has normal front fender, and it costs less.It has not the adjustable fork, but still the fork has good quality damping. I preferred to buy the A.T. because I found the KTM less stable than the A.T. (I experienced shimmy when I had to suddenly cut off the throttle in a bend), the engine is much less supple at low revs, which is bad on rainy days. I am just back from a 4200km summer tour 2-up with my wife from France to Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina and I will not say that the A.T. is the perfect touring bike, it is not. But at least it did the job acceptably. I will never spend the extra money to get the adventure sports, taller, heavier. In Europe at least, nobody really needs the extra fuel range of the bigger tank.
    Then, all in all, I fully understand the opinion of Pavlin on the 790R and he must be thanked for his video. It makes sense to make a difference between real travel and the idyllic enduro-style kind of marketing advertised by KTM. This being said, if one likes this one surely can go for this KTM, wy not ? The sun shines for everybody, but better to know in advance what to expect.

    Hi, thank you for your always honest reviews. For this one would like to remind you a fact that I noticed on your video:
    The R version you rode, apparently does not have the “standart” adjustable r suspension which have 24 cm of absorbing range/height but it has the 27 cm! “xtra something” wp shocks, which supposedly make what you rode even higher and installed but maybe not geometrically adjusted yet?
    I wonder though, the extra r suspension how did you felt comfort wise compared to the s version?
    Thanks a lot🖖

    Thanks Pavlin, I just bought one only paid 11,002 years old but like new. Your advice it’s good that the bike is not stable over 140 km/h. I really do beyond that anyway and if I want to go faster than that I would buy a sports bike.
    I do find the engine very good but very noisy at idle as it does not seem very refined but it does work well. The stock seat is very hard for me to bikes a bit tall. I think most people will change the seat to a more comfortable one. I like the seat cover so I am going to cut out the form and put in softer foam for myself. When are you coming back to Ireland?

      I have similar tires on my vstrom, they're limited to 90 mph, about 140 kph. Although I have to say I've had them up there a couple times, and they felt pretty stable. Pavlin makes a good point about the high front fender, I could see that causing an issue, combined with the tires.

    Like someone else stated, the tires on this thing, try high speed with better tires :-P Best mod i did on the bike was to get rid of the karoo3 :-P Love your honest opinion, you should take it offroad and try it on the trails also, there it will shine so much more. Here in Northern Europe I think this is the best bike money can buy in the ADV segment (new) if you see all the stock mods on this bike, the weight and engine... there is nothing else that can compare. And the best part, it is a great bike to ride, both on and off road :-D

    The speed of tires is limited to 160 km/h as you can see by the sticker left of the TFT display. So the high-speed shaking comes probably from the tires.

  • @2Meerkats
    @2Meerkats 4 роки тому +2

    Flutter - high-speed wobbles are related to a combination of things interacting with Rake & Trail angles (and aerodynamic breakaway). KTM set the rake/trail aggressively for rapid turning in the sand and to veer away from potholes etc. Then user variables - Variable preload - Pavlan what was the pre-load setting on the rear shock for your test ride Pavlan? hard rear pre-load will make it flutter more because it effectively reduces rake - Variable rider kg - a heavier rider leaning forward compresses the forks and worsens the issue. Assume with 185cm Pavlan's weight with all his gear around 100kg and his sitting style forward (same as me) make the bike less stable at high speed - so light riders at 80kg are not going to experience the same issues. Next is aerodynamic break-away from mirrors and BarkBusters vs steering damper settings... high pressure zones infront of these form and break away. Small mirrors/guards are better.

    I'd have to say much of what you talked about on the KTM I'd agree with! I live in upstate NY and finding a KTM dealership is like looking for a needle in a hay stack! I do have one dealership close by but they're so small they don't carry any street bikes and as far as ADV bikes, I don't even think they carry those either just strictly motocross bikes! One thing I really don't like about the KTM is the positioning of the gas reservoirs on the side of the bike next to the engine, that's a ticking time bomb in my eye's! Yes it a great idea to lower the center of gravity on the machine but geez that a risky move on KTM's part! I'll stay with my Africa Twin any day of the week! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

    I have a problem. I need two bikes with different capabilities and do not want a lot of compromises. I am considering a two bike solution for my riding needs but there are cost and space issues. To address my needs I am considering buying the KTM 890R and leaving it in that configuration for off road use. For long road rides I will have the following additional equipment I will switch out: An extra set of wheels with road biased tires, a lower, more comfortable heated seat and a taller windscreen. I might also add the lower front fender. The benefit is I save the garage space with one bike and lower overall cost than two bikes. I retain the R version's superior suspension and off road capability and would be able to ride comfortably on road as well. Easy to switch the equipment I listed and that changes the character of the bike. IMO, KTM should offer a package oriented around solving the problem with limited cost and equipment They would probably sell more bikes with an optional package like I described. My problem is not unique. In the meantime, I will solve the problem myself. The benefit of two bikes is they are ready for immediate use as they sit in the garage and I still have a bike to ride if one is in the shop. Of course, the garage space issue is still there and the higher initial cost and cost to maintain two bikes. I am leaning toward one bike with the additional equipment.

    High speed wobble! is down to tyres but most of the big Adv bikes are prone to this.
    You would probably prefer the Rd base model.
    The selling point for the R model is it’s ability off road, there’s nothing in its class that can touch it.

    Great Video Pavlin, totally honest and open review, as an owner of this very bike i agree with everything youve said although i can not comment of the speed wobbles you experienced at 140 km plus. as you know here in Australia thats way above the limit :))) but id say that is mostly down to the tyres they have chosen as standard equipment, as far as the price is concerned it is way over priced and a huge stretch for the average guy on the street, the new tenere will put a massive dent into the sales of the 790 adventure.

    in psychology class they say the higher the price of an item gets the lower the rating towards the product gets. Because when you pay a lot you rise your expectation and therefore give a lower rating but here I have to agree with you the bike should not shake at speeds especially with a theme like ready to race and than yes ready to race until 140km

  • @RedRupert64
    @RedRupert64 3 роки тому

    I also found the 790AR unstable at speeds of around 160. I'm sure, as has been said by others, that it's down to the tyres, and maybe, in part, to the hight front mudguard. There's a sticker that warns against speeds over 160. The tyres should be more road orientated and the non-R mudguard can be fitted. Also, the non-R screen can be used.

  • @sumporfuk
    @sumporfuk 4 роки тому

    Pavlin, I’m guessing the bike is probably unstable at high speed because the wheels were not balanced. Did you notice if there were any wheel weights on the rims (especially the front)?
    You brought up an interesting point about it being worth the extra money over it’s competitors, I hadn’t thought about it in those terms before. Up until now I guess I only saw the bike as a lighter weight adventure bike to my BMW R1200 GSA.
    I have a 2016 KTM 500 EXC that is nearing the completion of being heavily modified for long distance dual sport adventure riding, I guess I will leave well enough alone.
    I have a 2003 BMW F650 Dakar bike that needs to be modified for real off road use and I believe this will eventually become a very capable adventure bike as well.

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  4 роки тому

      I don't think that the problem could be the balance, it is barn new bike.

    • @sumporfuk
      @sumporfuk 4 роки тому

      Motorcycle Adventures Yes I know it’s a brand new bike but just like my brand new 500 EXC everything was fine out of the showroom below 90 km but above that the bike shook so violently I thought I was going kill my self. It took me some time from searching the internet to finally find that other riders had similar experiences. It was a lack of tire balance. When you think about it there are only three things that can effect a bikes stability 1. Suspension 2. Steering head bearing 3. Wheel balance.
      I don’t think that you are so overweight that the suspension couldn’t handle your weight. KTM’s are notorious for the lack of grease in their steering head bearings but a brand new test ride shouldn’t have any effect, which leaves wheel balance. I will be my dollars 💵 against your donuts 🍩 that is what was wrong with your test bike.
