- KTM 790 adventure R review | Knox | Sweet Lamb - Wales
Super lucky to have been invited out to the new KTM Sweet Lamb complex in Wales last week as part of a media launch for the KTM Sweet Lamb Adventure Experience and a first ride on the new 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R off road.
No doubt the KTM 790 adventure range and specifically the 2019 KTM 790 adventure R is one of the most anticipated bikes for this season, and that anticipation is well deserved, what an incredible bike it is and has me seriously questioning the type of bike and riding I currently do and opens the door to some serious off-road action at the same time as being a great on-road bike too!
For all the specs on the bike, you can check out the official KTM page on www.ktm.com/gb/travel/790-adv.... Current price in the UK market is £11,999.
Link to the KTM Sweet Lamb Adventure experience is www.ktm.com/offroadexperience. We’ll also be uploading a separate piece where we talk more specifically about the experience, the tuition and what you can expect to get out of it. This should go live next week.
We’ll also be putting the KTM 790 adventure R through its paces in about a months’ time here in the English Lake District over a longer period both on the road but also checking out what the Lake district has to offer off-road too! In the upcoming review in the Lake District, we’ll be diving into more of the details about what the bike is like to live with and the costs too.
Special thanks to the KTM UK team for the invite, the guys at the Sweet Lamb complex, especially “Molly” who was my coach for the day, and finally Max, Phil, and Dan from ToofastMedia for the naughty slow-mo’s and drone footage.
In this video, I was wearing the following:

Great review! It’s good to see a review of this bike done on terrain that’s closer to what I’d be riding than the sand dunes of Morocco. It is also cool to see a relatively newer off road rider talking about their concerns about riding an expensive and kinda heavy motorcycle off road, and how 790 R fared at addressing those concerns.
Thanks for the feedback Fred! Really appreciate it! Thanks Aaron Knox 🤟
Agree :)
Paid orange crap BS ...
As soon as my midlife crisis hits peak im getting one...beautiful machine!
I'm not waiting that long... wait , am i in mid life crisis
I just need to finish upgrading parts of my home then I'll be ready for one. Another one,two years.
Love your honest review :)
Looked Fun
Thanks Michelle!! :) Aaron.
Excellent review! I knew I was in for a treat. You guys do greatly well-photographed videos.
I had a Suzuki DR650 that was highly modified for adventure riding. By far the most favorite bike I've ever owned. Lightweight and very capable. Not perfect. You can have the best aftermarket parts on the bike to make it what you want. But it's still not like having parts designed specifically for the bike. I wish the suspension was better. 35HP. But it was bullet-proof. Just gas and change the oil once in a while. So good, I rode it through Mexico on a variety of terrain quite well with full packs. Okay, so it wouldn't go up the side of a mountain at 12,000ft or against a very strong headwind with packs on the freeway beyond 70mph. 70mph would do just fine.
I test rode the KTM 1190 Adventure R and as good as it was... It's a big, monster bike. The KTM 790 Adventure R is exactly what I wish Suzuki would've updated the DR650 into. Only 20lbs heavier or so with the aftermarket parts added to the DR650 to get it closer to what the KTM is... 3x the HP and superior chasis/suspension/electronics. And the pricing seems quite reasonable. The only question is reliability and servicing on the road. But I've read that servicing with common problems on the road has been designed to be quite easy. So that's excellent news.
Unless I feel something seriously weird when test riding the 790 Adventure R, it's going to be my second bike and my weapon of choice for my next big ride. Again, thanks for the review!
yeah i had a KLR 650, did a bunch of mods to it and it was still a KLR, very reliable(once i changed the doohickey) but it is 1980's technology, i have a deposit on a 790 R, and im being told early June, i dont need a test ride, i want it! they are very limited in quantity, and supposedly 2020's will be made in china! not acceptable for me.Good luck, if you want one better jump on it, one dealer had none left a couple of weeks ago.
I too have. A DR but I have it as a 790. Talk about a massive transformation- 54 Hp at the rear wheel. The 790 is not 3 times as powerful and by the time you have added a centrestand, decent baseplate, petrol tank/radiator guards, pannier frames and rear rack to the 790 you are looking at about 210 kg dry. No doubt a lovely bike though, with good suspension and full electronics to boot.
Although I've watched your videos earlier and like some of those too...
This video made me subscribe to your channel...
Perspectives matter... All the best, brother!!!
Hey, thanks so much, really appreciate your feedback and support!! All the best and keep in touch! Thanks Aaron Knox 🤘
Could this be THE perfect adventure bike riders always wanted? I keep watching this video try to find something that is wrong with this bike but nothing. By the way great informative review! Thank you for the upload.
honestly thats the best tank design ive ever seen on a bike. It allows the after market to easily expand tank size for those that want to make it into a long range adv bike and still keep the weight low.
Brad is an absolute weapon on a bike! Nice review guys, enjoyed that.
Great review and footage, thanks for sharing!
Thanks mattias! 🤙Aaron, Knox.
Badass review! Thank u4 sharing your experience
Glad you liked it! Aaron KNOX
Great review, great bike, ready for adventure !
Thanks Franck!
Excellent review mate, though you nearly lost me when you described the bike as “sick”! 😂 Despite this being a Knox production, you did less product placement than most of the UA-cam vloggers, which was nicely done.
I like that you called out the fact that although there are some epic videos of the BIG adventure bikes being ridden like an EXC, it is always by riders with skill levels us mere mortals could never hope to have; the 790 seems to be a fantastic compromise.
Thanks Michael, really appreciate the feedback! Aaron :)
Great review, I really think KTM have produced the perfect on / off road machine that normal height average ability riders can master.
Thanks so much for the feedback!! Aaron, Knox
Cool review mate, thanks.
Thanks Jase! Aaron. 😀
to be honest, i trust his review only the times before his "to be honest" statements , but not after . LOL
Great review!
Thanks John!! Shame you couldn't make it!!! Thanks Aaron Knox
Great video. I tested the regular 790 Adv last week as the R is not available for testing in Austria (all sold out). I really want the R for the reasons you mention at the beginning of your video. Looking forward to your onroad report.
Loved this review. Now got my eyes on that Knox Urbane Pro shirt for the (hopefully) warm weather coming up...
Thanks Steven!! You should, the urbane pro is literally awesome, wore it all last week in warm weather and was awesome and as soon as it got chilly just put my quilt on over the top! Thanks Aaron Knox
Knox Armour
Love the honesty and perspective
Thanks Michael!
buying this for sure
Great review, look forward to part 2 when you have had more road time, most of the reviews to date have been from the launch in Morocco, which tell me nothing about normal road use and touring in the UK. I have a 1090 Adventure currently, which is a great bike, I just wish for me it was an inch lower and maybe 10kg lighter. When it's time to change I will test ride a 790 and see if the lighter weight and lower COG compensate for the lower power.
I have a deposit on one, here in the states, cant wait to ride this well designed bike! Thanks for the review.
What estimated arrival date did the dealer give? How much deposit? Final price? Going to dealer Tuesday to inquire about getting one.
Great review. I hope to get a ride on one next week in Wales.
Thanks Neil. hope you enjoy it?! :)
GREAT REVIEW!!! TKS
Thanks Andres!! :) Aaron, Knox.
I am heavily considering one of these. I look forward to some longer use reviews
Looking forward to getting the bike for longer period shortly! Thanks, Aaron, Knox.
Great review. How would you make a determination between this bike and the KTM 690 Enduro? I'm guess % of time on road vs. off road but haven't ridden either yet.
Thanks!
Check out the reviews on the new Yamy 700. A traveler with dirt capability, not like a KTM 690 but at the adv level.
Fair review mate.
Thanks!!👌
Nice review. I have a 1290-T...wish I could afford a 2nd bike. 790R looks tempting.
ST-Audio Hi you rested 790 ? How do you think which its better ? 1290 or 790 ?
Nice video new ktm 790 good looking bike 👌👌👌🙂
Great video! I love my urbane pro shirt I wear it everywhere!! What helmet did you use?:)
Thanks so much, so glad you like your Urbane Pro. Helmet is a Fox V1, but Ill be going into more of the kit I used in the next couple of videos.. Thanks, Aaron Knox.
Knox Armour thanks Aaron, I was wondering if you’ll be doing a detailed breakdown about the major changes to the zephyr pro as I have the regular zephyr? I know the pro includes a chest protector but I’m unsure of any other changes?
Excellent review....thank you! FredTheBarber's comment below pretty much sums it up for me also. I too am very interested in how a less skilled "off-road" rider can handle the 790-R on the types of terrain I'm going to see over here in Western USA.
Question... You said that Jonathan mentioned there are better tires for off-road riding than the OEM Karroo 3s. Has Jonathan tried more "off-road" biased tires on the 790-R when riding around Sweet Lamb? If so, what's his favorite on the 790-R and why? I noticed KTM fitted all of their 790-Rs with Continental TKC-80s for their global press launch in Morocco.
If you're going to have the 790-R for two weeks, how about spending your first week on Karoo 3s, and then a week on Jonathan's recommended "more off-road biased" tires. Explaining the pros & cons of both tires on the 790-R would be really helpful! And, you would be the first journalist to review the 790-R on something other than the Karoo 3s (outside of the Morocco press launch).
I was there a few weeks ago and looking at the pictures from then one of the bikes was sporting something similar in design to the Maxxcross M7313 which has a knobblier design and thus more grip over the loose ground at the site.
@@Arachnoid_of_the_underverse Thank you for the insight!
@mld Great point MLD. I'm surprised that a bike from KTM that's marketed as the ultimate off-road machine wouldn't have knobby tires from the factory, when they'll do it for their full-size Adv bikes.
@mld Good point...TKC-80s do wear out fast, which is likely why KTM used Karoo 3s on all 790-Rs and Avon Trailriders on the standard 790 Adventures. The new Bridgestone Battlax Adventurecross AX41 look promising.
@mld Wow...that's horrible mileage/life for any tire! I've heard good things about the E07s, so hopefully they'll work out better for you.
Quick question: This bike seems to be perfect for real offroad but what about long distance travel? Is it suitable to travel on highways with baggage/topcase/sidecase?
Hi John, thanks for the comment, in short... yes. We have a more road biased review coming soon so keep an eye out for that. Thanks, Aaron Knox
Can't wait for these bikes to jump the pond and land in America!
Even Evel Knevel would have his work cut out with that one! 😂. Tha Thanks Aaron Knox
Shame there wasn't any soft sand and deeper mud as that is the true test of an adventure bike. 3 days in second revving its guts out 500 klms from help. Thats where the earlier units had some issues.
Honest KTM Review by KTM? Sure...
Would you need the R model or would normal be fine.
Hi Richard, I suppose it depends on how much offroading you'll be doing. My understanding is that the standard adventure R is more suitable for the road but is pretty good off road. The Adventure R has more travel suspension, better ground clearance and better offroad tyres as standard, plus extra off-road electronics. The Adventure R would be the one I would go for if it was me.. Thanks, Aaron, Knox.
Good review . Got to the point without being boring or Bro. Great videography! Towards the end I was growing intolerant of the background music but it wasn’t terrible. Another minute and the background music would have irritated me too much to continue. Change music every 2-3 minutes?
Thanks Gary, appreciate the feedback, All the best, Aaron Knox
To be Honest, I really doubt your honesty after how many times you said you were being honest. Could make a drinking game out of this video. To be honest...
To be honest, I didn't even know I was saying that, to be honest! Aaron, Knox
Honestly, the world needs more honest people.

Honestly?
My dream bike
Ive owned one of these beasts for 5000miles of 90% semi desert riding in the outback Karoo South Africa. There isn’t a similar power to weight adventure bike that comes close., from long open desert road drags 80 - 100 mph to technical rock single track mountain traverses and muddy water crossings, I run out of ability long before this Austrian does. Suspension and handling is king, If it had a weakness KTM could’ve done some more research on a better windshield to mitigate annoying wind buffet. Buy one !
I
Dear KTM: shut up and take my money! :) looking forward to the call from my dealer any day now...
Any thoughts on the short comings or concerns of the bike?
Thanks Gary, well its potentially still heavy if you are off roading, thats the only down side. If I was using it off roading, I would probably want to be with someone else so if I dropped it off camber down a hill would be able to pick it up. Nothing worse than dropping a bike on your own in a remote location and not being able to pick it back up again on your own!! Thanks, Aaron Knox
There are two version of KTM 790. S - for road ( not good for off road ) and R for off road ( not good for road ). Both of them are too heavy and typically for KTM and DUCATI engine sounds like bag of nuts and bolts just about to burst.
Reliability is big question mark. Loaded with totally unnecessary electronics with bad fuel gauge.
Overpriced.........The only great thing about this bike is marketing .
Which one u will suggest 690 enduro r or this 790 ???
Hi, depends, the 690 is more Enduro focused as its quite a lot lighter, whereas the 790 is more adventure - so touring and off road.. Hope that helps. Aaron, Knox
Great review, KTM have made a bit of a dillema for me as i can't decide between the new 690 enduro or this 790. Be great if someone did a review comparison for these to bikes.
WEBMASTER GURU here is video made by a 690 Enduro R owner who ride a 790 Adventure R ua-cam.com/video/al7UOUUxD7Y/v-deo.html
Ernepper yeah but that’s the old 690. the new one seems to be as smooth as 701 and has pretty much the same electronics as 790 sans rally mode
"Slippy".. LOL!
Yamaha has nailed this weight category with the 700 Tenere. The battle of the middleweights has begun. Whats the price again?
Agree!! Funnily enough, Mark who is on some of the vids has just put his deposit down for the tenere... looks awesome!! Thanks Aaron Knox
clam down with the advertising mate. have u never heard of the 690r lol
I agree that a 2stroke 250 cc. is the ideal bike off road.
How yo choose between 790 adv R and Tenere 700?
With difficulty... think they are both very good bikes, but the KTM has a bit more power and electronics. Thanks, Aaron KNOX
@@KnoxArmour thanks, excellent review
“Nice One” be interesting to get your opinion of the Yamaha Tenere 700 once is finally available??? I recall your comments at one of the bike shows where you had a few concerns about the KTM seems now you’ve ridden the machine your very enthusiastic about its capabilities coupled with the confidence inspiring ride it provided
“Really honest review” ...!!!
Thanks Colm, well sometimes you can have an opinion on seeing something, but then when you experience it, it changes some of your opinions! I think its a fantastic bike! Thanks, Aaron, Knox.
Too bad that this review doesn’t apply to UK, as you’re allowed to ride only on a few greenlanes and private tracks. No use for this bike here, and at 230kg is not light either. Thanks for review.
The UK sucks you guys are getting fucked all around no guns no balls no nothing.
Charles bike was a 1100 or 1150 not 1200...
The number of times you looked away from the camera started to get annoying. Maybe move your script closer to the camera?
Sorry Victor... Aaron, Knox
I’m torn between this and the Tenere 700. I want reliability and low maintenance but great fuel range. I am not impressed with KTM’s previous issues, but I’m open minded to try. I just sold my FZ10 yesterday to focus on both these bikes and learn which will be better.
honest man
A real adventure bike
a real orange indian pile of expensive crap
Good review but more gravel road riding than real off road.
Its an off-road adventure centre that it was filmed at!
I object to any bike sold as "off-road capable" that is too heavy to pick back up off the ground ....might have to go even smaller with higher rpm....I keep thinking a not yet engineered high power 350-400cc might be the ultimate answer ....I seriously wish for sub 400llbs fully fueled ready to ride and STILL have 70ish peak HP ...along with some great low end torque....this bike is still approaching the vicinity of 500llbs with gas gear and add on farkly stuff ...(which adds up a lot more than most guys honestly look into....I believe) ....465ish bone stock with no luggage fully gassed ....then start adding ....I am not being so sensational saying "the vicinity of 500llbs" now Amy I?
In the mean time? I WOULD buy one of these.....IF they were not already all spoken for
Wales looks a lot like Alaska .
Why not look at rider to bike weight ratio? I'm 6'1" 250 lbs, so I am half the weight of my Africa Twin. If I were a 230 lbs I would be half the wet weight of the KTM 790. Rider to Bike RATIO Matters. A 150 lb rider would feel more uncomfortable than me on my heavier Africa Twin. Because I am bigger guy and my rider to bike ratio is better I am comfortable on it. Bigger people in general can bench press more, squat more, ect. therefore handle a bigger bike.
Not true, look at most of the motorcycling champions around the world and 90% are smaller guys.....i'm 5'9" and weigh 65kg and won many offroad titles and MX races, my brother is 6'3" and 90kgs and always struggled to keep up......A lighter bike is easier for everyone big or small.
@@MrKdr500 Everyone knows a lighter bike is easier to handle, that's common sense. My point is that bigger stronger people, in general, can handle bigger bikes, that's it. The fact remains if I were a smaller guy I would buy a SMALLER lighter bike. Even if its only 40 lbs or so lighter like this KTM. What kind of bikes do these "champions" you speak of ride? LIghtweight 2 stroke and 4 stroke bike that are not even street legal. That has nothing to do with this, I'm talking about adventure bikes. MX has nothing to do with my comment.
Johnny P then buy the 1090r simples..
I'm looking for a fast bike that has little to no extra electronic garbage to break down in the middle of nowhere, or try to override my control inputs when I want to back it in and or power steer with the rear wheel.
Also I (like most old guys) don't have the knees I once had. So I need a plush suspension with a comfortable seat. None of that standing on the begs crap for longer than it takes to go around the corner or over the obstacle for me thanks.
Standing on the pegs of an adv bike for several hundred miles at a time or enduring monkey butt because somebody thinks real men only stand on the pegs, so why make comfortable seats anyway, doesn't sound like fun to me.
i have been watching just about every review on this bike, having waited and waited and waited for it to arrive and now i know what bike i am riding for the next 5-10 years, I don't know why i thought of straying, it's the Africa Twin, all day. A 70/30 off road orientated bike, that you can totally rely on in any situation, a hoot on the road and even more so off. This ktm does NOTHING new, other than add more complicated gadgetry that true off road riders simply do not want. You can pick an Africa twin up with 3000-7000 miles, for £7,500-£8,000, the difference between the ktm and the Africa twin goes towards the trip. HAPPY DAYS.
Westcountry Homes Online wise choice
Yes but the Africa Twin is about 25kg heavier, and carries it weight higher up, that would be a big factor in me taking a bike like this off road.
Adventure
go ride a 690 enduro. weighs 70kg less and you travel around the world and more off worthy. 790 still weighs 225kg fully fueled.
fuled everyone I recon
@@dougiequick1 yes. corrected. thank you
didn't get past the annoying pings at the beginning.
On initial review You couldn't find one negative thing about this bike? Not one? I'm sure you love the bike, but thats not a review its a commercial. Obviously, you were invited to this event. I have watched many of these "reviews" and when anyone is invited they never say any real drawbacks. That is a fail.
Sorry Russ, dont agree with that, its not a commercial at all. Yes I was invited to the event, but it is a bike I really like. There are downsides to these big adventure bikes and the biggest being weight which I did discuss in the vid and our follow up review of the 790 Adventure R which is on our channel. Thanks, Aaron Knox
are you being honest or are you just B>S us honestly come on now really
It really is a great bike in my experience... as per the review, we'll be getting the bike over a longer period next month so riding much more on the road and off it. So stay tuned for that!> Thanks, Aaron - Knox
Review ok. Footage zero
Includes paid promotion...
Sure it’s a good bike but you’re crap talking about the bike bikes just makes you look like you’ve no idea. It’s not the bike, it’s not the weight it’s the skill, fitness and experience of the rider
Also looks like an advertaising.
Yamaha Tenere 700 ruls offroad .....
Performance wise the t7 is destroyed by this 790, but is way cheaper which is a big plus for a offroad bike. If i had more money i would go with the 790, but in a real life scenario having limited budget as i gave i would go with the t7 which is a very competent bike
BIG fat paycheck from KTM for this review? My guess...I mean "to be honest"
It makes so much sense buying a really capable second-hand enduro/offroad bike for doing things out of the comfort zone. Why in the world do you need a way overpriced shiny new KTM with dodgy build quality for riding mud, rocks, sand and water?
This is hardly the first midweightadventure bike...
Even from KTM.
So much drama, as if it's some revolution
Reads like an advert - do you work for KTM? You'd be foolish to take that bike off-road with your lack of experience. To be honest 🤔
DRY WEIGHT
189 kg. Off road? lol Maybe dirt road is all. Get a 100kg dirt bike if you want true offroad.
you talk shit ... its ~190KG + bike with just 95HP ,its not advanture its sofa with cupboard on the wheels .... road and offroad its just only one bike and its 690 enduro ...
