I got mine yesterday, and for whatever reason the thomann gods decided to send me one with a slightly flamed neck. I'm absolutely in love with this thing.

This is the best review for this guitar I've seen so far. For whatever reason the other reviews have been along the lines of "it's a guitar ... I guess it's okay."

Mr Legatt, thank you so much for this! it really is a great guitar. i am very happy that you mentioned the giant cavity under the pick guard and that you will be replacing the tuners that i feel are awful. i am new to your channel but i have been very happy with your vids. i had my guitar tech do a little fiddling with the frets and the setup and replaced the tuners with some hipshot locking tuners and i must say the guitar is amazing even for a guitar twice or even three times the price. please keep up the honesty in your reviews! and thank you again.

Great Review and your playing in a word is stupendous!!! I own 7 Harley Benton guitars and after this review, I now own 8! I ordered the Orange Blast as well. I received it a few days ago, added 9-42 stings, and lowered the action to 1.45 on the low E and 1.25 on the high E with zero fret buzz.

I was very close to getting new filtertrons and tossing these Roswell ones until I lowered the pickup and raised the polepieces closest to the bridge just like you did, and it brought the guitar back to life.

Very informative review, you’ve sparked my interest in the guitar. I own two other Harley Benton guitars and they are very good instruments. My other guitars are fairly high end boutique guitars, the Harley Benton guitars are quite surprised.

On the strength of your excellent review I bought an Orange Blast when they momentarily appeared in stock again a couple of weeks back. Arrived a couple of days ago and can't put it down! Blown away by the quality for the price. The tones and clarity out of those Roswell 'Filtertrons' are absolutely unreal. If they do come back in stock people snap one up pronto, you will not be disappointed.

Exactly what happened with me too. I ordered after seeing these reviews, was told it'd be the end of January but I got it last week. I've had 5 deluxe model Harley Benton's and this one is way ahead - except for those tuners. Far too stiff.

Hi Dan! Mine arrived yesterday, in Green Blast...I will compare my findings with your review as I think your review on it is the best out there. So far I am very pleased with the sounds I get, although I still need to spend more time with it exploring. Atm the cleans blow me away, especially the neck, which is gorgeously chimey. After my first contact with it to ensure the electronics were ok (I did have to pull the knobs away from the body a bit as they were rubbing against it, even after solving that, the tone knob created some scratchy noise as I turned it down and up again despite having raised it up off the body).
I then went to spend a few hours building my first pedalboard which came with the guitar and, after putting it together, I plugged in the TE-90 FLT and got no sound whatsoever...I thought it had to be something wrong with the wiring I did on the pedalboard, but I plugged in two other guitars and it was all fine...it turns out that the new guitar stopped making contact inside the output jack with the cable I was using (the same one as I had plugged into it before when I first tried it and had no problems....) All fixed by using a different cable to go from the guitar to the pedalboard, but that was a quite unpleasant experience as for a moment I thought the guitar had only lasted through one use of the output jack...let's see if it holds up in the following days. Cheers!

Bought one, solely based on your videos. Had to order the blue blast one, as no orange blasts in stock (again, likely your fault). Great videos. Your intonation is always spot-on, I know this sounds like a weird compliment but even with well-set intonation I hear a lot of people sound out of tune with some chords. It must be a technique thing as much as mechanical.

@@DanLeggatt Ok so I had a chance to play it and your review is pretty spot on! I'm running a FAS FM-3 rig and I have a Carvin CT624 that I have hot rodded so the preset I use Top boost is dialed in for that guitar. First thing I notices is the top end was not as bright and the pups didn't have the same bite. The easy fix was to adjust both of those (Treble and gain) parameters and I was back in the ballpark!
The action was too high for my liking so minor adjustments were needed to the saddles and neck. Tuners need to be replaced with locking tuners ordered those last night, I went with some off brand 15:1 locking. I looked real hard at the Kluson brand but I didn't want to spend $110 on tuners for a $200 guitar.
The Neck carve is a tad thicker than I'm used to but not annoying to play on. Frets need polishing but there were no high spost, the intonation was way off. The saddles had to come back a good 2-3 mill. once that was fixed everything was ok. The real bummer was the finnish I thought I was getting an actual real finnish but at closer inspection the wood grained finish is painted on. So for $200 you get a guitar that needs to be setup properly requires locking tuners or a good set of 24:1 ratio no locking and has a painted finish.

Apart from switching out the tuners the only mod that seems worth while for this guitar is to simply add another volume and tone pot to make the control scheme like on a Les Paul. It would give some more tonal options but it is the players preference whether that would be needed. Otherwise you could chane the bridge to something like a Bigsby but if I was going to do that I would start from a model that had a two piece bridge system (again like a Les Paul) rather than retrofitting to something like this which has a pretty decent looking bridge as is.

  • @nolanbentzer
    @nolanbentzer 3 роки тому +1

Have the green one, and I am totally satisfied with it. Replaced the tuners to Kluson vintage lockers and the pots to CTS 500 kohm's with 0.33 PIO capacitor.
Also put on 2 Gotoh round string trees.
So now it's a real joy to play👍. It is a low budget guitar but feels and sounds like a pro guitar (or better😁).
Without the former review I would not know about this guitar, so thanks for that🙏.

@@DanLeggatt I guess some ambient stuff for live shows and also recording. I find myself struggling to find a amp/cab combo that I can make some really nice pad/chimey cleans on, but that’s probably just my ear.
Maybe something like a guide on how you would go about creating a fully versatile performance that covers clean/ambient stuff with options on the remote. Another thing I’m not entirely sure on is matching the volume of each performance so that in a live show the levels will be consistent every time regardless of effects etc.

Thanks for your time and effort, Dan. I have ordered some Harley Benton Guitars before and always sent them back because everything about them was just plain awful. After seeing your first review of your orange blast I decided to give Harley Benton one more chance and ordered one (a blue blast). I asked Thomann to send me a lightweight one. To which they replied that they could not honor that request... To my surprise though I received a specimen that weighs in at just under 3KG! The paintjob on it is truly horrible, the tuners needed replacing due to being VERY stiff and there were some hardware issues... But I could care less: after a not so quick setup (the neck was out of whack severely so I gave it the Dan Armstrong treatment, read: loosened the neck a little and gave it a good hard yank, and I had to sand the neck pocket a little deeper because the bridge saddles wouldn't screw down low enough to achieve a comfortable action, leveled and crowned the frets) it now plays very well and sounds amazing. I own a few guitars that I like as much and a lot that are (much!) more expensive but these FLT blast guitars really take the cake for playing oldschool tunes... Surf, rockabilly, rock & roll, country, blues and jazz ooze authenticity and charm: it just has the right sound and feel! So thanks again: I wouldn't have gotten one without your review!

I like all my guitars to have the same set up with the locking tuners and locking straps. I will also have him Pleck it on the Pleck machine. Although it sounds great and plays well I do this with all my guitars though. I will ask Thomann Music to have you do a demo / review so all can see. It does depend on the operator, my guitar tech always checks it out as he knows what I want. After the job is done he says it plays like butter now. When I get the guitar back it does play like butter it’s great in tune feels absolutely super. In the United States it’s $250 per Pleck.
In my opinion it is well worth it. I will have the Harley Benton guitar done.

I have one question though. What did you put on the tuners? The tuners I have are stiff as hell but it does not go out of tune. I was thinking about all the stuff I would have to do to make mine playable but it doesn't seem like it really needs anything. (I got the B-Stock). I have a guitar tech that I have used forever and I took it to him as soon as I got it. He checked the neck, I left it with him and he set it up with 9 - 42 strings and its at Eb tuning with low action. The pickups wouldn't raise and he put some foam under them. These pickups are the star of the show. I like everything about this guitar and it is seeing a lot of play time. I wish I would have had him to dress the frets but I wasn't expecting much from this guitar

I have a number of Harley Benton guitars in my collection. 4 to be exact. A TE-90QM Trans Red with great P90 pickups. The bridge was bad on my guitar. There was a lot of space between the saddles, causing them to slide left and right. I replaced this bridge with a Schaller Guitar Bridge 3D-6 BC. Tuners weren't bad but put Harley B. locking tuners on them and a Graph Tech TUSQ nut. All hardware is black instead of chrome. Now the guitar is great. Also 2 acoustic guitars from HB. The CLG-650SM-CE BK SolidWood and the 12 string Custom Line CLJ-412E NT. After tuning both great guitars. Both acoustically and amplified a very good sound. The 4th is a Fusion-II HH Roasted SSP. I have a love-hate relationship with this. Plays great after a major adjustment. Tremolo stays in tune. Nice roasted neck. Steel frets were not polished so bending strings sounded like a rusty gate closing. Like the intro of Michael Jackson's song Thriller. The pickups on this guitar are terrible. In the studio it still sounds okay through my Kemper but live they sound way too thin. There is hardly anything left of the sound. No balls at all.
The quality control is pure guesswork. I immediately sent the first fusion of HB back. There was a small crack in the neck and the frets were not polished. Try polishing steel frets. That won't make you happy. It can be a kind of Russian roulette. Usually HB's guitars are good, but it can also go wrong, but Thomann doesn't mind that. Good service I must say.

Hi Dan , there is a lot of snobbery In the guitar world, when I started ,cheap guitars where shite !!,practically unplayable !!! When I saved up enough money ,I bought a 69 strat brand new from bells musical instruments ,London .it was sent direct from Dallas Arbiter ,fender distributors .It wasn’t,t much better than the cheap one ,truss rod nut missing big chunk sanded out of the side of the neck at the 12 fret dead spots all over the neck .!!!!! I have several Gibson’s acquired over the years ,92 60s classic ,finish is crap on the neck,97 es335 dot new ,finish on the neck again !!! I bought a s/h early plus deluxe ,Iwas that impressed ,I bought a new one in 97 with the floyd rose bridge !!! But to cut a long story short,I needed a big bodied jazz guitar for a project ,looked on fleabay and picked up a gear for music jazz for the princely sum of £75 .Did a fret level and it plays every bit as good as the Gibson,s.the finish was as good ,if not better than them also !!!what my point is ,is that it is pretty hard to get a shite guitar now, A guitarist/singer I was working with bought a new fender tele ,he asked me to set it up ,and I had to level some frets on that ????? Conclusion is a good setup will cure most ills expensive or cheap doses,t matter .Sorry for going on ,thanks for the Kemper pack👍👍👍👍👍cheers Baz
