Right! I was watching this like "meh", but I bet it's set up for grip. Throw some economy tires on there, add power/remove weight, and I'm certain it would drift just fine.
Well to drift you need grip and powerful engine to rip that grip off when needed. That's why almost all formula drift or drift GP cars have like 900+ bhp
@@Weeliam2000 need grip for drifting at higher speeds. Balance, can drift anything at any speed, JUST be reducing the grip On the A110, jsut running it on "eco" recommended tyre pressures and can have it sit sideways on throttle for as long as you wish on roundabouts ;)

No. It's a sportscar for real world driving. If it was a time attack car, Alpine would have made the 2 gear a little longer and make a 0-62 time in under 4 sek.
We're talking about a sport what was started in Japanese mountains with people driving Corollas with absolutely no power, so it is possible & will make you better in a high power car, all the power does a lot of the time is hide mistakes.
I’ll just put this here and hope people see it. 245hp is definitely enough to drift, you can even drift with even less horsepower. The whole you need 1000hp and special for drifting is complete twaddle. The fact is the reason this alpine doesn’t get a lot of angle is likely the tire compound and weight distribution. If I’m correct, the tires are 205mm thick and the tires are fairly grippy. With the combination of that amount of horsepower and tire size it should be okay to drift. The grippy compound and the lack of friction caused by it however will cause it to grip up. This will cause it to achieve a higher speed whilst drifting which may also make it harder to “kick the back end out”. Another part of the problem with angle with this stems from the fact it is mid engined. As the weight is mostly in the middle, there is a larger pendulum effect than if this were a front engined therefore it is harder to counter steer.
Dear Top Gear, if you previously heard of the GT86, you know that less than 248 hp can be enough to drift. Your best presenter prove that in your show.
I like watching Stig blast around turning rubber into smoke. I have noticed Bentleys and big Merc's ya know the giant posh English cars (plus Merc who's German) are more exciting turning rubber into smoke, while the smaller lighters cars like the Atom or the A110 are no where near as dramatic tho, the one exception when it comes to dramatic, Ferrari, who by the way are all about drama and why I'm a fan of their F1 team at the same time being a huge George Russell fan. Get George to drift with Stig?
As someone who is a frequent passenger to someone who drives like an absolute maniac on 168 hp, this is definitely enough to please anyone who is riding in the car. the driver may be a little bit stressed over everyones safety but the guy i ride with would definitely do this for fun if I was with him
Considering how grippy that car is - you gotta give him a 7 out of 10? looked good on the hairpin although the back doesn't really slip out - but the power application to the tarmac could really be seen, he drove it really well in my humble opinion.
Grip is easy to alter, juat take the tyres to "eco" pressure recommendations and it's easy, Done scottish roundabouts all way round easy ;) ALLEGEDLY ;)
Alpine drifts fine, but those high speed corners need some heat into tires to make it work. I would have expected better from a pro, but I guess it makes me feel less bad about my driving.
Welp, that was the worst drift from "STIG DRIFTS" so far. But most likely the grip and nature of the car. Not the high horsepower tire munchers we're used too!
Not really the car no, you can see a lot of videos of the A110 drifting since it's been made to slide more than its rivals, not totally drift tbh but it's still much more slidy. There in the video... Idk for sure knowing the Stig he could do much better with the A110 'cause that was just bad.
@@rpzpacific2332 The last few videos with more track time oriented cars with potentially lower power and better grip were done on a slightly damp surface. Definitely nowhere near the smokey drift we want! It looks as though the drivers are carrying much higher speed into the drift (compared to this one) in other Alpine 110 drift vids out there. Car still looks like more of a handful overall for drifting compared to the other vehicles in this series.
A stunning beautiful car but not made for drifting, looks perfectly balanced and made for driving precisely and fast but not for playing and drifting around
