is that really all? I mean, if you order a car engine, is it ok to assume it's basically ready for it to be bolted in and started? You don't need to adjust the timing or anything?
Scotty: "today ill show you how to replace your engine" Me: o cool ive been waiting for this video for a long time Scotty:" take out your old engine put a new one in" now you know how to replace your engine!" Me: 😃
LMAO! Yep, pretty much. Heck, I went to the kitchen for a snack just to enjoy this... when I came back, it was on the third video after this one already, lol!
it's quite a bit more than that, and anyway, it's just a basic video showing that guys can actually do it themselves with some rather inexpensive tools if they really want to
It's not the most complicated procedure. Literally disconnect/unbolt anything that connects to the engine/obstructs it, pull it out, replace the engine and reconnect everything. It's better to look up the specific procedure for a certain part that you're having trouble removing, like how to remove an exhaust manifold or a throttle body.
Hey Scotty . I did the same thing to my 72' - Chevrolet pick-up Took out motor and transmission by myself. No help from anyone and put everything back in .
This is so great, started this job 9 years ago when the video came out and just finished. Totally worth the thousand bucks I saved, only cost me the 9 years and a marriage
Replacing an engine in two minutes Yes he is the most interesting man in the world No but really can you imagine changing engine in just two minutes Like woah. Mind boggling It’s easier to try and figure out the time space continuum
Just swapped the motor in my son's 94 S-10. It took me 3 minutes and eleven seconds. A minute longer than Scotty. Granted, I did take a break to drink a beer. ;)
reminds me of Haynes manuals: 1. disconnect negative terminal from battery 2. remove electrical connections 3. disconnect cooling system 4. disconnect fuel system 5. remove engine... installation is reverse of removal...
Scotty YOU ARE HELPING OUT A YOUNG GIRL SOON TO BE EXPERT ON FIXING HER OWN 95 gmcsierra 💅🏻💅🏻 i learned how to do my own oil change, change my power steering fluid, clean my bay, locate my oil leak, and I STILL HAVE TO DO ALOT MORE ON THIS BABY!
And no mention, of course, of disconnecting the engine from the transmission. Or engine mounts. Or power steering. Or A/C. Or radiator hoses and fans. Or alternators. Or starters. Or wiring. Or vacuum lines. Yeah, just take the intake and exhaust manifolds off and boom. None of that other stuff could possibly be important.
They aren't held in by wizard magic, They are usually attached by only a handful of bolts. The rest is hoses and cables. If you have seen a heavy car crash the engine often just breaks off the mounts and comes clear of the car. If you rev it you can see the whole thing flex about, theres obviously more than this but its not outrageously difficult. An engine jack and a socket set maybe a breaker bar you can get one out, also a torque wrench to get one back in. But its not rocket science, its like unbolting anything else its just daunting because it looks so heavy and tight.
Well once you realize all cars have the same things just different sizes and shapes, it gets real easy when you get down to it. The more you do it, the more you learn, the more you learn the easier it gets. Heck you can do most jobs in a driveway with a jack and a 40$ tool set from harbor freight
Dragon King you could get a remanufactured engine at parts stores like Nappa or autozone but the cheapest place to get an engine would be getting a used one from a salvage yard
@fullvibe87 A big video on changing an engine would be WAAY beyond youtube's time and space limits as I shoot with an HD camera. I just made this one to show people it's possible to do engine swaps themselves with little money. Soctty
***** of course this is a generic video touching the major points of changing an engine, a full video would be so freaking long and boring no one would watch it but nerds.
Yeah, except the over 4 million nerds that tune into chrisfix's videos who actually want a decent in depth view of how to fix their cars, unlike you who makes everyone think that REPLACING AN ENGINE can be done in two minutes.
@PUREAAMERICAN it was a 900 dollar used car that the last owner, a kid, drive into the ground and cracked the head from overheating. But it ran 2 years with the cracked head, I just got tired of adding water (it ran fine otherwise.) So I put the used japanese engine in. It had 160 thousand miles on the original. Scotty
The Haynes manual way. Disconnect negative battery terminal Remove mounts Lift motor from vehicle Because with Haynes everything else is already disconnected
I replaced the engine in my sisters '98 Oldsmobile Intrigue. (3.8 V6, not the 3.5) The old engine ate up the #1 rod bearing. I borrowed my uncle's engine hoist and rented a stand. Took me about a week though because I had to do this in between working, but when it was all said and done, the car fired up and ran like nothing was ever wrong with it. One of my finest moments as a DIYer mechanic.
Changing the engine look so easy I guess even myself someone who has very little experience working on a car. Can change my engine in 2 minutes and 11 seconds and save $5000+
realize if it's different than the motor in it now you will need sensor changing, wiring changing, and computer changing. But if it's the same, everything fits on right
@PeterGriffin4200 160 thousand miles, but it only failed cause the previous owner was a teenager who drove it a year with a leaking water pump. So the head had minor cracks in it, though it ran OK, it used water.
About 95% of automotive repair content on YT is to prove to people that it's worth paying for-real mechanics to do this stuff. This one being the best example out there.
"If you need to change the engine in your car, then today's your lucky day!" Would have been funny if the video just ended right there. Very helpful stuff Scotty, your videos rock.
It's not that easy as shown in the video. You have to disconnect wiring, engine foundations, hoses and bunch of other stuff. And reach those tight spots for unbolting is pain in the ass.
depends on the noise of course. remove the fan belts and run it, pray the noise goes away and it's something the belt drives. If not, engine has serious internal damage
@alistairstuart2009 anything's possible, but diesel swap would be insanely complex.. Same thing with a bigger engine, it would be complex and require a new transmission and tons of other stuff.
@99ambition generally they come with nothing but the engine block and heads, you reuse everything else. If it's used from a junk yard, it has many more parts on it and is much easier to install, like this one. Scotty
@mds2465 the car's previous owner was 17 and overheated it by not replacing a worn water pump. so the head had a small crack, it ran ok, but would use coolant through the crack.
Hi Scotty ! I´ve followed all your instructions and now my cat is inside the bell housing and I hear a funny sound when I crank the engine, any advice? Tnks
Hey dude. really nice video. I have a 95 honda accord and are gonna put in a h23a vtec engine. I never done anything like this before but its nice to know guys like you makes me think its easy ;)
@DrAgOnAnGeL7 Check the fuel pressure AFTER changing the fuel filter out, and also check the distributor, they do wear out, notice mine has a new dist on it. Scotty
Replacing an actual engine is like the 10 hours of compulsory reading on course material and this video is the one page of a slide show that the prof spends on talking about said content.
I actually did that with a 1974 Pontiac LeManns. Right in the street...rented the engine hoist. Put in a 400 that a friend gave me, and that car ran like a bat outa hell. Thanks, Scotty.
Everyone is upset that this wasn't a 120 minute detailed video on engine replacement for their car but I was just curious on the basic process for engine replacement, thanks Scotty!
Ok people,it's not that easy, but anyone who can check their own oil should know that. Before you do anything, get the right manual and go through whatever section that goes along with the work You plan to do. A really good idea is to take a lot of pictures of what everything looks like as You do each step, believe me,it makes going back together one hell of a lot easier.
seriously people think scotty's videos are helpful but most of them are like this, just tips, doesn't actually explain each step like eric. no disrespect intened
Scotty is more for people who already know mechanic well, chrisfix likes to go in details, and ratchet and wrenches just go and explain what does every single damn part he touches, so it depends on your time, scotty will have up to 10 minutes, chrisfix up to 20 minutes, ratchet and wrenches up to 4 days
@disnukka79 No, it's not That easy, this is a summary just to show people they can do it with minimal equipment of a 100 dollar engine puller and patience. Scotty
@99ambition sixties only use small modules to run ignition systems (they called them "black boxes" back then.) Seventies stated using more computers on AC systems and early fuel injection and ignition systems. Scotty
I totally agree. Scotty doesn't seem to make videos for people with inline sixes or V8s either. There's a certain amount of preparation work involved in doing it right. He briefly mentions the removal of the manifolds. But there's also the need to unhook the wiring and pipes and tie everything out of the way. You also have to remove the fan, the belts and the radiator in case the engine block shifts forward and punctures it during the lift. It's also a good policy to replace the rubber engine mounts while you're at it, rather than wait until they fail a roadworthy inspection and then you have to come back especially to do it in a year or two.
@99ambition take it for a road test, both city and highway and see how it feels and shifts and brakes and corners. If that's fine, then pay a mechanic to do a final check, that's the best test of all. we mechanics can tell in half an hour just about everything. Scotty
@lowlow643 Of course you swap all the parts off, but the gas is still in the tank and when you connect the fuel lines back to the new engine, the pump will pump it in. Scotty
@PVoyager the feeler gauge should slip under the rocker with a small amount of resistance, not tight, but not completely loose either with no tension slowing it down. Scotty
there should be a diagram on the hood showing all vacuum lines. If not, go to a dealer, by law they have to supply you with a picture of vacuum lines as that is anti pollution equipment.
+Scotty Kilmer Irony at its finest, Scotty. "your name says it all, plus youcan't spell". No hate, I just think you should check your spelling first before commenting on someone else's lack of grammatical accuracy.
I have been watching many car repair video when showing they make really look simple but believe me a simple nut and bolt misalignment could make a second job turn several days when you have no experience. Anyway this kind of give me a little confidence to try changing engine one day. At least the hardest part is have the tool to lift the engine off and a perfect solution has been provided with this video. Next is to look for similar video on how to change transmission.
@sacr3 Yes, I already talked about this if you bothered to read the comments below I'm showing people they can do the job themselves with relatively inexpensive tools . Scotty
the older they are, the harder to get good ones. Junk yard ones will be just as old and worn out generally. Try rebuilt factories to see what they want for a rebuilt one
@INS14466 going backwards and noise has nothing to do with the clutch. Pull off the back brakes and check em, and replace or resurface the drums if you do any work. Scotty
@sacr3 Yes, and engine rebuilding is NOT easy, requires many special tools and years of experience. On the other hand, swapping an engine is just bullwork, not especially technical, just needs a lot of patience. Scottty
What people don't know is that this video is in real time, Scotty is JUST that good, oh and he did the camera work too while replacing the engine, he's like the chuck norris of car mechanics.

Scotty doesnt make videos for people who only know how to put gas in a car
Scotty
I love harbor freight
@lowlow643 Of course you swap all the parts off, but the gas is still in the tank and when you connect the fuel lines back to the new engine, the pump will pump it in. Scotty
Replacing an engine less than three minutes. Ha ha ha ha ha ha
Hey it only takes 2:11 to swap an engine and it starts right up! Thanks, Scotty! I’m gonna swap all my engines today!
@BADtimmay same process, but they don't just slide in, you have to wiggle the hell out of them.
He doesn't look old enough to have been working on cars for 46 years. He looks younger than a lot of 46 year olds.
Allen J Bowers he was a mechanic when he was fetus is what your trying to say
@PVoyager the feeler gauge should slip under the rocker with a small amount of resistance, not tight, but not completely loose either with no tension slowing it down. Scotty
Is it really that simple to replace an engine? Theres a place that sells engine from japan for like $300
the actual process takes 8-10 hours, just make sure you have an engine hoist
Good sir, would you please tell me where this place that sells Japanese engines for like $300 is? Thanks!
there is a lot of it. mostly chopped from cars junked in japan. See MightyCar Mods show on buying a car from Japan
Diego A To remove AND replace an engine, it's not that simple, there's actually a lot to it, especially when installing the new engine.
Unless you're Dominic Toretto...he doesn't need an engine hoist....oh and Chuck Norris
My mechanic needed a whole day to put my engine in this guy can do it in 2 mins amazing
i did something wrong, it took me more than 2 minutes
there should be a diagram on the hood showing all vacuum lines. If not, go to a dealer, by law they have to supply you with a picture of vacuum lines as that is anti pollution equipment.
lol, instead of "rev up your engine's," it's more like, "replace your engine's."
no, back in 93 you could swap a japanese somewhat smaller CC engine with an american model that was a tiny bit bigger with no problems at all.
Yeah I'm sure this really fuckin helped no one..
+Jim Ashole your name says it all, plus youcan't spell
+Scotty Kilmer Irony at its finest, Scotty. "your name says it all, plus youcan't spell". No hate, I just think you should check your spelling first before commenting on someone else's lack of grammatical accuracy.
Circuit Break he spelled everything correctly..where's the mistake?
I have been watching many car repair video when showing they make really look simple but believe me a simple nut and bolt misalignment could make a second job turn several days when you have no experience. Anyway this kind of give me a little confidence to try changing engine one day. At least the hardest part is have the tool to lift the engine off and a perfect solution has been provided with this video. Next is to look for similar video on how to change transmission.
11,000 Subscribers!!! Congratulations Scotty!!
Hey Scotty! thanks to the video I replaced my engine in 2 mins!!
@sacr3 Yes, I already talked about this if you bothered to read the comments below I'm showing people they can do the job themselves with relatively inexpensive tools . Scotty
quality how to from a Emmy award winning mechanic.
Yes, I would replace, not attempt fixing a knocking engine on that model.
@Matthew55904 No, it just won't have traction control or ABS brakes. Just normal old fashioned brakes. Scotty
wow, what a rip. I paid a little over a hundred bucks for my engine hoist
the older they are, the harder to get good ones. Junk yard ones will be just as old and worn out generally. Try rebuilt factories to see what they want for a rebuilt one
@INS14466 going backwards and noise has nothing to do with the clutch. Pull off the back brakes and check em, and replace or resurface the drums if you do any work. Scotty
@dmaruca depends on the mechanic and how much work he had to do. I often finish jobs done that way, and sometimes it's only a few hundred bucks.
@sacr3 Yes, and engine rebuilding is NOT easy, requires many special tools and years of experience. On the other hand, swapping an engine is just bullwork, not especially technical, just needs a lot of patience. Scottty
@HonnNeey92 of course, this is just a summary, showing that people can do it if they buy a low priced engine hoist.
What people don't know is that this video is in real time, Scotty is JUST that good, oh and he did the camera work too while replacing the engine, he's like the chuck norris of car mechanics.
@rockford13power could be either, you won't know without taking it apart.
