How to Remove an Engine

- Here's how to disassemble and remove an engine and transmission from a Toyota Corolla.
Removing the engine from most transversely mounted, 4 cylinder cars are quite similar.
In my case, I opted to disassemble major components off of the engine before removing the engine and transmission as an assembly, including water pump, alternator, starter, AC compressor, power steering pump, air intake, throttle body, radiator, AC condenser and exhaust manifold.
This allows a lot more room in the engine bay for removal. if your doing a straight engine swap, the removal of these components is not necessary.
Once the above mentioned components are removed, there are 4 engine mounts that hold the engine/tranny to the car body. The front and rear mounts are bushings with a thru bolt. They are secured underneath the subframe by 3-4 bolts.
The driver side tranny mount is also a thru bolt. However since the tranny is being lifted up, the mount must be removed from the inner fender. The passenger side engine mount is a vertically mounted bushing, and is typically left for last.
Strapping the engine was done with a thick heavy chain, around the engine. Seat belts were used across the driver and passenger side mounts for balance.
A shop crane was used to hoist the engine and transmission up over the car, and then the car was rolled back.
6 bolts hold the engine to the transmission at the bell housing. Once separated, the torque converter is exposed. It can then be unbolted from the flywheel beneath the access plate under the engine block.
The flywheel is then unbolted, and the engine mounted to an engine stand using the engine mount bolts.
This process was demonstrated on a 2001 Toyota Corolla with a 1ZZ-FE vvti engine. - Авто та транспорт
I have huge respect for the guys that do this kind of thing on a daily basis, how they know how to put it all together again is an absolute miracle!
Putting it together is the real skill
I'll tech you in 2 weeks. And you will become a pro.
Honestly !!! To us it looks like a 3000 piece puzzle and God bless them for this ministry 🥹😭
@@Pridecrucified This is why I don't buy legos.
its no miracle. its not that hard when you know what your doing its easy.
With so many moving parts, wires, hoses, fluids, seals and other bits and pieces, it's a miracle that these cars can be so reliable and last so long.
Your right. Now imagine newer cars with even more guts!
speedkar99 I think they're getting better. Electric power steering looks like a much cleaner design. Electric cars even better, less moving parts, seals and fluids.
But: in return we get millions of lines of software code we don't see, all virtually moving in a very complex dance, all made under pressure of product launch deadlines. That's where the problems of the future will come from, that and all those sensors.
@@jean-paulvanewijk1810 Tesla batteries are dying after like 10-20 years though
Good video, managed to do mine along with the video, can't believe it only took 8 and a half minutes.
+호주사람 Sweet, especially if you have air tools it helps.
😂
호주사람 I got it done in 7 mins I didn’t have to stop and explain what I was doing to anyone.
Fukn Oath sas mate, he really shows the pace you gotta try work at to get the job done quick and efficient.
So many people spend hours on each step.
But if you can just bam bam bam through the steps then it can be done within a few hours.
i did it in five minutes with my beer on on the right hand while baging my girl
I wish this guy made every engine removal video so much better than 99.9% of others
Thanks
That is IMPRESSIVE! And what is even MORE impressive is you are able to PUT EVERYTHING BACK!!!
i looked up "How to pull an engine" expecting a tutorial on an old muscle car or a truck or whatever, but no you made one on a 2001 corolla which is exactly what I needed! I'm preparing to pull the engine from my 2002 corolla soon, only difference is its a manual. Thank you for making a video thats short, and to the point showing every step, this will make my project much easier now!
I'm trying to swap a 1999 with a 2002 that is a mess. I guess I will need to swap the head of the 1999 with the 2002 because of the vvti. Can an engine swap be done without removing the ac refrigerant? I've never done this before.
@bubbadoright9271 It might be possible, I had mine drained and removed the compressor before pulling it to have as much room as possible. But the compressor it only held on by 3 mounting bolts and the high and low pressure hoses. If you can pull the mounting bolts out and have the compressor supported by something so it doesn't hang from the lines, then theoretically, you might be able to pull it off without draining it. It's close to the bottom of the engine, and I dont think there's anything that would get snagged in that area when pulling the engine. You'd have less room to work with, but it should be doable. Just be careful and go slow. If anything doesn't feel right, just stop and check everything before continuing.
Brilliant video. Thank you for not spending a lot of time introducing yourself and otherwise putting in useless information. You got right to the job and did just the right amount of explaining. Thank you.
Absolutely a fantastic video, especially for Corolla owners. Great job editing and narrating - you keep it moving right along. Thanks!
+T Mukal thanks, short and to the point is my style
he is tha Xample of wha UA-cam should b - not a tisk tisk rant vlog site
It's almost like this video should have been titled "How to remove everything" hahaha
+GHill Actually that's not a bad alternative title
GHill true he took a lot of staff.
In my imagination, this video was shot in one take.
+Jack Denning oh no, it was shot over the course of a week and a half.
Excellent video as usual. The only thing I would've mentioned is to remove the battery first. Yes I have learned that lesson. I appreciate that you took this video all the way to putting it on the stand.
+Tripp M Thanks !
Your right, I should have removed the battery before the alternator, but I believe I had at least had it disconnected.
Thanks to this video I removed an engine from an RSX yesterday at a junkyard and paid 180 USD as compared to another junkyard where they took off the engine for me and charged me 750 USD
Wow I'm glad it helped even though this car is different
Self teaching is a beautiful thing to those who want it
Does your brother know that you took out the engine from his car!?
+Car geek 101 He won't find out anytime soon. He doesn't even have a drivers license yet haha.
speedkar99 lol
He'll figure it out when he needs to go to work in the morning.
Daniel Reigada He said he has no license so I don't think so.
Car geek 101 I’m sure he’ll find out when he goes to drive it and has a check engine light
Good job on the video, brave to do it outside like that. I always do mine in the garage especially when doing a big job like removing the engine. Hats off to you for that. Thanks for all the detail too. I hope you don't mind me stealing some of your technique, very well done!
Thanks very much
As long as the weather cooperates it's not hard
Just what I needed to see. A written description is good but your video made it so clear. Many thanks.
wow what a video, so informative and right to the point with no BS
Bless you guys
+moe raw short and to the point is my style
Very good, concise video!
Two things I would focus on:
1 The welded nut for belt tension release; kind of odd thing most people would probably be clueless about (including me at one point 😁).
2 The exhaust manifold connection to the muffler connection needed to be unbolted.
I watched this while high, time well apent
Haha what did you learn
+speedkar99 I learned that taking out an engine is a lot harder than I thought and that there's no way in hell I could ever do this.
I think the cables and pipes are the most confusing.... by the way im also high, so how do you know what goes where when you put it back into the car
@@thulasizwezuma2758 Take many pictures... You can actually go back to the dealer and most all models have wiring diagrams, coolant hose diagrams and such. Many hoses on cars are prebent and or special molded pieces and have to be ordered so the dealer has to keep these part diagrams...
lmao samme
Awesome video I really enjoyed this
+ZIMALETA HOW TO SHOW & UNBOXING thanks. Any other videos you want to see on this car?
speedkar99 which is harder taking it apart or putting it back together
I'm glad I stumbled across your video series. I really enjoy these videos.
thanks
went wayyyy beyond just the engine which was super nice great explanation on each step by step process of the task thanks
You are welcome. Check out my latest video on engine removal
Good video and i tried to remove my Toyota engine. But no instruction how I put the engine back in car so no I have a car without engine and an engine without car
+Patrik Cedermar that's perfect. Follow my convertible video and my engine tear down video for the next steps
Just watch the video in reverse.
Reverse the video
WOW! that looks easy! I think I will head over to harbor freight for a socket set and try it myself! ;)
+David Keleshian It is quite easy. The only special tool you'll need is the engine crane and stand.
@@speedkar99 I wish I could rent both, I would buy them but I stay with my parents and I already keep too much stuff there
you need impact tools as well
If you’re that old and don’t have tools already save yourself the trouble lol
I will never do this but watching you do it was cool. You really seem like you know what you are doing
A little fast for a beginner like me, but helpful regardless. Thanks
Removing an engine isn't exactly a beginner thing but I'm glad you could take away some points from this. The actual removal in person isn't as daunting as it looks
loved the video you did a perfect job condensing this video Ashok the other videos are looking and boring. you got all the most important parts👌👍
+Protect Security LLC Thanks, short and to the point is my style
This video is like a weird form of therapy. 😄
I think that I am just going to pay someone else to do this. Wow, this is DAYS worth of work for me.
I have the exact same car! Can’t wait to put a new engine on my 01 Corolla LE. Good thing I watched this
+Allahu Akbar Feel free to watch my other Corolla videos too!
speedkar99 I’m thinking of doing a straight engine and transmission swap. Should I follow ALL the steps in the video or are there any that of the steps that I don’t have to do?
This was awesome!! Super informative
Thanks. Glad you learned something
This is the exact video I've been waiting for lol.
+Chris Avalos Glad it helps, you doing engine swap soon?
I'm kind of doing the exact opposite but I'm sure this will help. The engine was pulled and rebuilt but never installed so I have to diy it myself
+Chris Avalos Alright, glad it could help. I assume your doing it on a similar engine/car?
Let me know how it goes.
The same exact car. Are you planning to record the install process too? Because that would help me so much lol.
Bro, you rock! Thanks for the info...I'm doing a K swap in my 97 civic hatchback.
Great video! No nonsense and to the point. I am surprised you didn't get to use your brother's toothbrush at all.
+Gonso2014 thanks
Short and to the point is my style
Since there was nothing to point to, my brothers toothbrush took a break here.
Very well explained, thank you
Another great video! Thank you! Be well. I enjoyed watching
Thank you 😁
Looks easy wow nobody can do that.amazing job Jannah
Good information sir
Great narration...I liked the specifics about nut sizes.
Glad you found it helpful!
Like a boss. Great job smarty pants! Love these videos. 😃😃😃
+Luke Martin awesome
Great video. I see y mechanic shops charge so much. Working on cars is ALOT of work.
+corymartin100 it sure is! But if your taking your time and doing this as a hobby like me, it's a fun learning experience
speedkar99 ima pussy. Ive ALWAYS wanted 2 work on an engine but just never had the balls 2 just do it.
corymartin100 Just get a dirt cheap 2nd vehicle to learn.
Working on transmission or pulling a motor is a lot of work but almost everything else is not too much work especially since they have lifts
Nice quick explaining didnt drag it out i wish all vids are like this
COOL
This is my favorite video on UA-cam
Glad you appreciate my work
Nice work terrific video.
Great video...Definitely not for a beginner. Pure nightmare of a job for anyone... Especially putting it back together.
Awesome video. Thanks again.
Another excellent video, just one slight correction; engines with an automatic transmission have a flex-plate instead of a flywheel.
+Dinal Abay Thanks
My respects, good job. Great video
Another great video !
+AJ L thanks
What more do you want to see on this car?
speedkar99 I think windshield and other glass removal and reinstall would be interesting !
Actually gotta agree with AJ L on that haha a glass removal would be cool and helpful to see.
+iPervy thanks, good suggestion. I'm going to start with the rear glass first.
:) You're the best speedkar!
You did all that in under 10 minutes and while holding a camera, amazing , well I’ll be doing the same this weekend , first time for me doing something like this it may take me an hour but oh well, great video bro
All the best on your engine removal
Great video makes doing a pain staking job look easy did you rebuild the engine or where you selling the car for scrap?
Taking it apart for fun
Im not sure Why im here Or Why i watched this i know zero things about cars ( I can change a tire or add fluids that's it! ) but i enjoyed it a lot.
The top of this comment section is pure gold 😂😂😂
i have to remove the engine block in a 2000 4 runner with out the transmission, can you recommend me a video related to that? thanks in advance
What a great video one of the best I've seen. Keep it up 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
+Cavanaugh L. Gray Glad you enjoyed it
That was extremely concise!
What a great video. You're awesome!
Thanks
Really great video. You can put any engine you want in there.
Very informative... well done...
+william Raymond thanks
I just bought a 1960 Thunderbird with a blown 352 but I have a 1984 cougar with a 302 and has 76,000 original miles would I be able to swap? would there be mutch alterations
Honestly thought it was harder.... Nice video
That was a really good video. No extra bs just the info needed. I do have one question. Is it really necessary to pull the trans with the engine. Mine is an all wheel drive and I really don't want to have to remove all that crap. Plus it looks like there's enough clearance to get the engine out and in without pulling the trans.
Hey Speedkar, do you know if the engine removal procedure on a 2007 RX 350 is the same as a Sienna? Do I remove the subframe to take the engine and transmission out together, or can I go through the top?
I believe it is very similar since they are mechanically related, but I haven't done it myself.
Why did I think you drove the car backwards for a second 😂
Great work guys high marks
Thanks
Does the crane lift exactly vertical? or does it follow an arc so that the engine will be slightly backwards during lifting?
+Ali Akram very slight arc
Very informative video.
+Ric Beard thanks
I like working on cars to, I don't have this car but I want to remove Engine from 2006 Nissan Murano 3.5L Engine and Install it in 2003 Infinity FX 35 it's also 3.5L Engine, one thing I do wonder will it really work, Nissan Murano is front wheel Drive and Infinity FX 35 is 4 wheel drive, one thing is for sure some one installed an Engine from Infinity G35 and I am not sure if it was 4 wheel drive one, but it had advanced timing problem and it lasted about 1k miles and died, if you know anything on this please let me know
+ZIMALETA HOW TO SHOW & UNBOXING the engines are different. Get one from a maxima or altima.
ZIMALETA HOW TO SHOW & UNBOXING just buy it it doesn't cost that much
Scotty Kilmer would enjoy watching this
Haha why do you say so?
speedkar99 because it's a Toyota! LOL xD
I'm pretty sure watching this he wouldn't go long without laughing
Wish my car was this easy to work on.
+loren young Yes thats why I chose corolla to take apart.
I'm having a hard time trying to remove my 2008 chevrolet impala engine. The exhaust manifold bolts are stuck. Am I supposed to remove the manifold from the engine block? I am trying to disconnect the manifold from the exhaust pipe (looks like @2:20).
People need to stop being sarcastic on youtube lol
I'm gonna be needing one of those babies when i'm gonna be buying my dorito powered car
Is it not possible to leave the compressor attached to the ac lines, same as power steering pump, and just hang them off to the side so don't have to mess with them?
+modobomber Yes you can remove the compressor and leave it off to the side, just make sure it doesn't get caught up when hoisting the engine. Removing the drier and condensor gives you slightly more space in the engine bay to work though
How do you keep track of bolts, hoses, and other various parts? Serious question
I didn't put this back together but you can label some of it and put bolts back where they bolted into. Once you have experience you don't need to label things and just know where they go
This was awesome
You are the man.
was asking, only, what does it take to make look new again, I mean paint, rust and all components......
love mu 1999 ve corrola wouldn't give it up to any new camry...
drives good... people are just people at the end.... I drive and I like...
Xmases
Thanks.
I would have to do this procedure in steps with photos and ziplock bags labeled for bolts. Do you have a video of replacing the engine back in the vehicle?
This vehicle was swapped with a 2JZ lawnmower engine. See my convertible video 😂😂
I must commend you for a very clear understanding of this matter. Do you do any kind of modification work?
+Samuel Kyambo thanks, I try to explain things clearly and simply so everyone can understand. No I don't do performance mods.
Keep up the good work bro.
Great video. What's the name of the gun you're using to take off those bolts?
Wow. Like your channel. Good info
Awesome
Instructions unclear, my car exploded.
Sorry to hear that.
You still have to remove the motor to fix it anyway...
great vid!
excellent video 👍👍
Thanks
He made that look waaaay to easy!
It was time consuming to get all the wires off
Hello mate what king on knot do u use with the seatbelt to tye engine mounts ? Any regular knot would just come undone ???
Lol
My dad came by and said here...let me help you with that....and that was the result. I'm dumbfounded myself 🤦
@@speedkar99 ok
did you buy the corolla just to strip it?
+Mario Djameh Yes
How else does one have "fun" with a corolla? Lol
If you live somewhere there is a "U pull it" or "Pull a part" yard you can get a lot of stuff really cheap. People in the south are fucking stupid but that is one of the few perks of living here, lots of wrecking yards around. Someone once told me they don't have them up north.
+ssandal I'm going to be cutting up most of the parts to show how things work. I might sell the front end body parts and lights.
+John I agree, especially after discovering two more yards earlier this year about 45min drive from me. They have fixed pricing and is pretty reasonable.
+John I agree, especially after discovering two more yards earlier this year about 45min drive from me. They have fixed pricing and is pretty reasonable.
Damn you took shit off that didn't have to be removed
😂😂😂
I was disassembling the car at the same time watch the rest of my videos
My god how do you remember how to put everything back together?
I don't...the fun is in taking it apart
Watch the video in reverse.
Just label everything with some tape and you'll be fine
Take pictures before every step you take.
Write notes on paper in steps and move in reverse when your done.
I use cups with numbers to track bolts and work reversly.
@@Mrkevi123 im gonna tape every bolt and screw with yellow electric tape to each location they belong on lose parts.
Question could you remove the motor without the the transmission? I have a 2000 Celica gts auto and am in the process of removing the motor but my transmission is still good. I removed all 6 bolts connecting the fly wheel to the torque converter, can't I just split it then pull just the motor
You can but in my opinion it's more difficult since you'll have to support the transmission somehow and aligning it back up upon installation may prove tricky because there are pegs in the bell housing.
Pretty sick. How do you organise the bolts and screws so they don’t get mixed up and u know what’s what
Use small boxes
Huh. Would this video also apply to a 2002 toyota echo?
Sweet video, about how long did the process take?
+hectoronthemoon I did it across many days, working a few hours after work each day, plus filming, maybe a week and a half?
That engine sounded great
Yeah it ran fine
THANK you clear and good
Awesome. Now you try removing an engine 😁
perhaps it's a stupid question but i'll ask it anyway=) how did you make sure none of the bolts sheared off? i had that happen to me once but fortunately it was it was only one of four bolts holding down the back seat.
Rust is a killer. PB blaster helps, but I do shear bolts. This car was scrap so I wasn't concerned.
Nice video , make one for installing a engine.
Haha. I only know how to remove things
@@speedkar99 😅same here
What brand impact wrench is that and how big is your compressor?
+Randy Mahadeo impact is older than me lol
I think a 25 gallon cambell hausfield compressor
Looks fun almost like a puzzle.
It sure is a puzzle the more complex and modern the cars, the more crammed everything is!
After both sides of cv axles were taken off. I saw both front tires still exist when u lift up engine. Can u explain please ?
+Wei Chen I put them back on there so the car can sit on it while I lift the engine out the top
No wonder .lol
Quick question, how much do you think this type of labor would cost? I want to get my engine pulled out but idk the average cost. Im thinking a out a shop or my friend in his backyard.
If he's an iffy friend or your gut says not to go with him, don't, if you choose a shop make sure you trust them or you get a referred by a friend that trusts them. If you can try to convince your friend to explain fully how this process works to you and walk you through every step.
