Thank you very very much for your tips. This video made me looking shutter work much more differently than I've looked at it before. I am looking forward to trying out your tips, starting today! :)
Awesome video Nicole... you know what you are doing in journalism and that clearly shows. Loving your picture today... lots of light, blurred background... looks really nice.
Your videos are amazing and really motivating for beginner stock photographers. You have excellent quality content for a channel with only 25k subscribers!
After this I looked at your portfolio on Shutterstock and really was surprised. Most of your photos in Top are editorial. It gives me good idea what to shoot if would be suitable case. It is a pity that I live in a not-so-large city, and now I have been at home for 3 weeks at home on self-isolation, but even so I try to shoot something for stocks during normal remote work. Thank you! And Health to you and to your family!

Wow, the content quality and the quality overal on this channel is amazing,!!! Thx you!
Hi Nicole. I'm a new subcdr and into my second year doing stock where across the more common sites Shutterstock is the best payer so far. Two of the strangest images sold was one of roadside dumping/waste and snow on top of a council refuse bin. Done a wee bit of architectural stuff as well Scottish castles and stately homes more out of learning new skills but they have sold as well. Due to political climate in UK just now I'm thinking of trying to cover that as well. great vlog and have learned lots many thanks and keep up the good work.
You are totally right. My photos from my local city (Medellín, Colombia) are my most successful photos in SS because it's not saturated. If you search Medellin you can find lots of touristic and panoramic photos but nothing very specific like stores, transportation, people, etc
I've only made $7.89 so far on Shutterstock. However, I noticed that my photo of the town sign has already sold 8 times. And my photos saturate the first page of search results for my town. So that is awesome, at least I think so. All thanks to your great advice and suggestions I might add. I will keep watching you!
This makes total sense. I think I have purchased all your photos of the Wharf. I'm really surprised more people haven't posted them. Also DC restaurants as you pointed out! I still need those.
Great work! A lot of useful knowledge for those who are starting their adventure with stock photography. Thank you for the movies. Greetings from Poland👍
...another great video Nicole; my best seller on Shutterstock is my digital thermostat (myself repairing it) #2 is (myself as a technician) repairing a air conditioner. You're vids are some of the best on youtube. Many Thx.
Many thanks Nichole Glass. So far none of my shutter stock photos have been downloaded. But I am just starting out and working to upload more. I’m loving your videos and your common sense approach appeals to me. This whole genre (not sure if that is what to call it) is so interesting to me, I am excited to get busy and get a sale or two under my belt!!
Hi Rebecca, thanks for stopping by! Hopefully these videos help. It's definitely exciting when you get your first couple of sales, even if they're not much. Keep at it :)
David Bautista Nicole does a great job of making that clear. Much as I love a good flower photo, the idea of seeking out very different pictures to take sounds like a fun challenge to me.
Thanks Nicole. I followed some of your thoughts and advice from many of your videos and made a sale almost as soon as my picture was approved. It was just a random picture of a vehicle ferry.
My strangest photo that was downloaded (about 10 times) was a picture of my horse eating a pop-cycle I made for her with apple juice and carrots. I thought, "why not" and was really surprised I sold it. There aren't too many pictures of a horse eating a pop-cycle.
Very informative and helpful videos indeed. I'm interested in your background in journalism as I have previously done some freelance writing with a number of my articles online and became interested in photography last year, having done some real estate photo shoots, free for portfolio and several paid shoots. Only became interested in stock photography a couple of weeks ago and yet to begin submitting photos to SS. So your editorial / journalism angle on stock photography is particularly interesting and helpful. Just learning the 'how to' at this stage. Thanks for your videos.
Hi Steven, thanks for the kind words - I'm glad you liked the video! Yes, I think my approach is probably a little bit different than other microstock photographers around here, but it definitely does well for me. Wishing you all the best with stock photography - and if there's any future videos you think I should make, just let me know :)
Thanks a lot for this informative video. It really opens a new direction for me in photography. I'll probably not focus on making stock photos but it is nice to have an option in my head when I'm out shooting photos.
Thank you for an informative video. Some excellent ideas. My photo was of a Monument for a massacre in Poland that happened in WW2. Its on the Jersey City waterfront and recently the city wanted to move it, which became news worthy in Poland.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. You never really know what might become newsworthy... but chances are you might have been the only one who uploaded a photo of that monument!
Thank you very much for your videos! I want to ask your opinion regarding the 550d Cannon and if it can be a good Camera to get started in stock photography and video photography, and which lenses you advise to start with! thank you.
Commercial versus editorial. The massage envy one was probably editorial and if so is there a story or narrative that makes it editorial? That’s wher3 I get stuck. Thanks
All storefronts are considered editorial. In those instances there's not too much of a story (I suppose in some cases there could be), but just keep uploading those as regular editorial images and you should not have any problems. Check out this page: www.shutterstock.com/blog/submitting-editorial-content-part-1-illustrative-editorial "Photographs of brand names or logos on buildings, storefronts, or on cars can be accepted as documentary editorial with a proper editorial caption."
So cool, thank you for the video. I have one question: In the photos of the protests , how can you sell them without the models authorization?? I mean when i try to sell on shutter pics with people, this people had signed previously. Thank you!
Very nice madam.. 1 question madam you shoot some photos of boats, buildings with light and many tall buildings. Are these require any property release? If yes how did you do this?
If only i had a penny for every time shutterstock reviewers rejected my editorial photos and told me that my images had no commercial value, i would have a truck load of pennies. However listening to your point of view, it's becoming apparent to me that photographers are at the mercy of the reviewers mood at the time of upload. Although i agree with you that shutterstock photo sales are more frequent and consistent.
Oh definitely, there is certainly variation between the reviewers. If I can't get something through as commercial I just upload it as editorial. Most of the time, the designation doesn't seem to affect my sales at all...
I live in Orange County, CA. Not a lot happening here-or that’s how it feels. I’m dialed into the political news, but it sounds like I need to get more dialed into the local news, too. I’m new to stock photography; I’ve only started a couple of months ago. So far, I’ve sold three stock images on Shutterstock, but none on Alamy, iStock or Adobe. So far, Shutterstock seems to be the way to go, although I’ve only earned $.75 so far. Besides shooting editorial photos, how do we determine which stock photos are not oversaturated? Sure, we all know pictures of dogs and cats are overdone, but what other types of photos have been done to death? It’s hard to know what to try to concentrate on. What’s a good way to determine what is needed in stock images (excluding editorial, which you’ve covered here)? Also, what’s your opinion of briefs? I was going to participate in one, but then I read how many other photographers were against them. Apparently, after you upload your shots, you’re forbidden to ever use them even if your photos are never used. I find that to be a good reason not to participate in a brief. Additionally, photographers say that if your photos are chosen, you get paid a pittance compared to what a photographer should be paid, especially when the ad campaign is on a national level.
David Bautista Yes, that’s true. I try to approach it from the consumer’s angle. I sometimes forget to look at successful pics’ keywords of a similar subject. That can be helpful too, I suppose.

Hi, great channel, when you refer to taking shots of store fronts or buildings, I had a day last year in Liverpool and got great shots, even a cityscape. But they rejected them saying they wanted Property releases. I mean, do they expect me to ask over 200 buildings to sign a form etc How do you get over that?
They pay much more, i sold one picture for 125 euros, or 65 euros for just picture from my smartphone. But, it is really slow platform, sometimes it takes months when my uploaded pictures get to Getty Images (EyeEm are selling pictures also there)
I submitted a store front from my neighborhood and received a rejection: Rejection reasons (1) Non-Licensable Content: We cannot accept this image into our commercial or editorial collection, or we are no longer accepting this type of content. Has something changed since you made this video ?

Hey there, yes you can. Unless you upload to Getty. Getty wants exclusivity, so uploading there means you cannot upload them elsewhere.
@@NicoleGlass On Dreamtime it has a box that you have to check (or maybe I dont HAVE to) for exclusitivity. I think I am just going to stick to Pond5 AND Shutterstock. :-)
@@RosasUtopia Yeah definitely check the conditions of each site. Some of them pay more for exclusivity; you'll just have to decide what's worth it to you.
My first photo I sold was of A Basset Fauve De Bretagne dog :-)
mam can we upload our youtube video on shutterstock' . on youtube video is 5 minutes and can i upload 10 second of this video on shutterstock. waiting your kind answer.
Not sure what you’re asking. You can upload videos that you filmed and recorded, but you cannot upload videos from other people.
@@NicoleGlass i mean can i upload my youtube channel video on shutterstock
@@mr.developer446 Yes if you filmed those videos yourself and you own the copyright, then you can sell them.
@@NicoleGlass thanks
Did u edit Ur photo before u upload them ?
Yes, I always do a minor edit. Nothing super intense, just basic color corrections and such.
Mam you shoot dustbin photo, is it also editorial ???
Yes it is! Because some of the trash has logos/brand names on it. If your garbage can photo has no visible logos, brands or trademarks, then you can submit it as commercial.
Nicole Glass Thank you mam...I had submitted photo as editorial but it was rejected in Shutterstock. So I was confused how to write editorial photo...
Mam if you don't mind can I share my photos with you?
Love yer vids! Pete from Ireland
Thanks Pete! :)
