Thank you Rachel, I watched this video two weeks ago, bought a camera and with the help from this video I uploaded first few images to Shutterstock. And just now I got my first photo downloaded and I am amazed, I thought I am never going to see that ($0.10 but still a download) 😂😂
Fantastic help, Rachel !🎃
Rachel you rock! Amazingly helpful. 👍👏
Rachel thank you so much! This video is exactly what I need! Hugs from Argentina!!
So glad to hear!! 😊👍
Rachel, I'm so glad to have found you - you are informative, inspirational in your photography and have such a pleasant personality that comes through in all your videos.
Thank you!
I am just about to get started in stock photography. I have retired early for Social Security and I’m looking for a little bit of supplemental in income. I know Stoy takes a while to get going, but I’ve been a pass photographer and I wanted to get going and this was so much great information to help us so we get started on the right foot thank you so much for the video.
Great information Rachel - I just successfully submitted a number of images of the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Festival & Parade,
an annual event that occurred on Saturday, June 22, 2019 to shutterstock.com! You've inspired me to pay close attention to editorial
images, keywords, composition, public (un-ticketed events open to the general public) events and requirements for editing, keyboarding
and uploading.
Congratulations!! That’s a fantastic accomplishment! Way to go!!!
Thanks for making this video. Very informative and very well done! I'm new to stock photography and this will help a lot. Thanks again.
You're welcome! So glad you liked it!
A big thank you!. This is one of the most useful videos I have watched about stock photography. Again THANK YOU!
You're so welcome! I'm very glad!
Thank you. Your keywording information was so helpful.
I'm so glad! :)
I truly found this video inspiring and helpful. I also appreciate the questions your viewer posted. Thank you.
Thanks Suzette! I’m glad!
Thanks for your tips; I learn so much from your work!
You're welcome! Glad you liked it Ron!
very useful, thanks. I'm just starting on the stock road, got thousands of pics to do and this really helped.
So glad it helped Paul!
Hey Rachel, just discovering your channel!
I'm starting to upload to stock sites and am lucky to have found this amazing video of yours before spending half of a lifetime tagging and writing keywords like a dummy.
Thank you!!! :) Wonderful images as well. Cheers!
I’m so glad it’s helpful!! Nice to meet you! 😊
Thank you so much for this Video Tutorial! Very helpful specially for Beginner!!! Keep it coming!!
Thank you! I’m so glad!!
I loved the shot of the high depth of field but in-focus PEDUNCLE and I am so glad you used that keyword, hahaha. Great video! You have a lovely way about you! Thanks.
Aw thanks Michelle! Haha I love that word. So funny 😄
Hi Rachel. Great informative video. Feel I really needed this one. Spent ages and I mean ages going through key words on the stock site for each image. Looks so much easier like this. Thanks 👍👍
I’m glad it’s helpful Nick! Shutterstock also has a similar keyword tool on the dashboard. Also if you are taking lots of similar images in one shoot, you can add them to Lightroom on import and then it’s all done. However just a heads up that Lightroom will always put them in alphabetical order and some sites prioritize them by order.
Great video, thanks, Rachel.
Thanks!! Glad you liked it
Great vlog rachel, i found that very helpfull and educational. It,s always great learning from people like yourself to help me on my journey
I’m so glad Jim! Thanks for telling me that!
Very good tutorial! So clear advices and I love Your photos!
Thanks Matti!
Thanks Rachel, great info! Awesome shortcut for keywords! Loved it
Thanks Garrick!
Thank you very much Rachel for this helpfull video, I did not know this site so thanks to you, I will not dig my head to find keywords !!!! Have a good day
You’re welcome Jerome... I can totally relate! I hate trying to think up keywords!
HOLY CRAP!! I did not know I could put that info in the image while in PS, File>File info, I just tried it, uploaded to Shutterstock and it auto populated the keywords like you said, I am baffled THANK YOU!!!!! This is the very reason I have not submitted to other agencies, it's so time consuming and cumbersome but thanks to you I am headed in that direction. WOW, I am mind blown rn! I am guessing if I do an editorial I just use the format in the title of the meta data, man that will save me so much time, all I do is mostly editorial.
😄 I’m soooo glad it was helpful!!
Nicely done Rachel, very informative.
Thanks Don!
Nice technique on using metadata. Also good images. Keep us informed on how they go.
Thanks Tom. Will do
Hi Rachel, I stumbled upon your channel yesterday and out of curiosity tried to submit one photo to Shutterstock using your method. Today I received an email from Shutterstock that the photo was accepted. Thank you so much for your help!!!
Way to go!! Congratulations 👍👍☺️
Excellent and informative video Rachel. Well done.
Thanks Jim! 😊
very nicely explained Rachel.. I am a beginner for Stock photography and this is a great video.
I’m so glad!!
Thank you. Such beautiful voice and beauty you do have . very helpfull video
Microstock keyword tool - thanks for putting me onto that!
You're so welcome!
Hello Rachel. I followed your video on stock photography with interest. I think it worth noting that all the metadata can be filled in just once in Lightroom and then transferred, again in Lightroom, in one fell swoop to any number of images of your choice. Those images can then be uploaded to Shutterstock and surprise, surprise, all the metadata appears automatically in the Shutterstock dialogue boxes, title, key words, copyright, and so forth. Moreover, once in Shutterstock, the image prompts Shutterstock to suggest a number of added keywords. Like your system, it's all very simple and straightforward. But it takes a few attempts to become familiar with it and to get it right every time. It's amazing what one can do with a pumpkin! Daniel.
Thanks Daniel! Yes you can add in Lightroom. I prefer to add in Photoshop only for one reason... even though Lightroom is much easier, the keywords you add there will become alphabetized when you export the image. This isn’t a problem for some agencies but there are a few who want keywords ordered by importance. For those sites, if you leave them in alphabetical order you could be hurting your discoverability and sales. If you are uploading to a site where that doesn’t matter then I completely agree... Lightroom is the way to go! So much simpler 😊👍 Thank you!!
@@RachelLerch Hello Rachel. You make a very important point about key words being "alphabetized" in Lightroom. If a library insists on keywords being prioritized according to importance then Lightroom would not be the programme to use. I'm just repeating what you've already noted ... :-)) Good to hear from you. And thank you.
You too Daniel! Really appreciate you taking the time to write! ☺️
You're a star Rachel. Keep up the good work. Love your enthusiasm. Bye for now.
Aw thanks Daniel. Bye!
Wonderful video. Highly informative. Thanks for sharing your work flow. I would like to know what is the minimum image size that is needed for submitting images ?
Hi Rachel ! A really good video..well built and very usefull! Thank you
Thank you. Glad it’s helpful!
Thank you thank you thank you! You inspired me to try stock photography and I have had some success already but Key Words seemed like the dark arts ! This video has helped so much.
Oh I’m so glad Anthony!! Congratulations! Shutterstock also has a keyword tool and actually it’s great. It’s on the dashboard. Works the same way.
Thanks Rachel... great tips for stock.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching! 😄
I Enjoyed your video, Thanks for the tips, very helpful and you earned a new subscriber.
Thanks very much! Nice to meet you!
Thank you, really great tutorial, especially the part wirh the keyword tool! Greetings from germany
So glad you liked it! Greetings!
Thank you this video was very helpful.
I’m so glad!
Very interesting Rachel, I upload to Dreamstime, I wasnt aware of the microstock group keywording facility on google, I always add all mine manually and usually after around 15 words I'm struggling to find anymore, so a great helpful video, Thanks Mike
The keywording tools can be really helpful! Glad you liked it Mike!
Thank you for making this video, I learned a lot as I am new to stock photography,
You’re welcome Bill! I’m so glad it was helpful!
Great video and very informative!Keep up the good work!!
Thanks so much!
stock photography is truly a great way to earn money :D
thanks for sharing this with us, really enjoyed watching this
You’re welcome 😊
Great video, thank you !
Beginner question : is filling out the IPTC data necessary ?
Hi! I always make sure to have the copyright in there. Also if you add the keywords to the metadata they should upload automatically to the agency you are contributing too. But I'd say copyright for sure.
@@RachelLerch Thank you for the reply !
Enjoyed the video, it was very informative especially the way you do your key wording. Is it possible that you could give us an idea how these photos do on stock in the next coming weeks, I would be interested in their success. Also, which sites do you subscribe to? Again, I thoroughly enjoy your videos and gain something every time I watch one !
Thanks Michael! Sure. I upload images to Shutterstock, Getty, Bigstock, Adobe and Dreamstime.
@@RachelLerch Is there any policy against uploading the same image to competing sites?
Hey Michelle. As long as you’re not an “exclusive” contributor it’s ok. It is stated in your contract. Some agencies like Getty images pay more for exclusive images. Always check your contract before signing it.
Very helpful!
Thanks for sharing the workflow.
Do you find the images that you are in sell better than others?
Not necessarily. I’d say people pictures do sell well but it’s hard to compare sales based on my portfolio because people only make up about 5%.
Many thanks Rachel for the great insight process details well done! Have you thought to insert metadata within Lightroom?
I love your videos
Aw thank you!
Great video :D i hope you do more like this in the futur :D
Each video you made you become better and better :) keep going !!!
And may be one day a video to how to fill and send model release :)
Thanks so much! Sure... model releases can be such a pain - which is why I don’t usually take pictures of strangers :) But filling them out can be straightforward.. best to use one release for all agencies.
Very useful video Rachel. Is it not possible to add the metadata in Lightroom?
Yes it is BUT, unless they’ve changed it in a recent update, keywords in Lightroom become alphabetized when you save the photo, and some stock agencies want the most important ones first. So it means rearranging them on upload, or possibly losing sales.
Apakah penggunaan free ssh tidak diperbolehkan pada saat mendaftar shutterstock contributor ?? (bcoz im getting "this account has been disabled. Please contact your organization administrator") #woalahribetjugaye
Can you tell us the image size (resolution, mp, the dimensions...) that you use for every stock agencies? Have you a general mode of use for this question? Thank you so much
I have two cameras -both are full frame - one is 24 mp, the other 42.4. I edit in raw and save at highest quality. The higher mp camera is dimensions 7470 × 5136. Hope this helps!
Hi Rachel, Thanks for the useful video. Could I ask you what software you use to show your computer screen in your video? it's very clear and well done.
Thanks Paul! Yes! I use QuickTime to record my screen and Premiere Pro for all of my video editing.
Thanks for the reply Rachel.
Thank you!!
My pleasure! :)
I’m new to stock photography. I think I would prefer like hard good products or something like that. My eBay photos are top notch ( I like the process and have the setup) usually my cool ass dog is the subject and I don’t see people paying for him.
Thank you
Thanks for the video, very helpful. Does the meta data automatically export to the JPG from the PSD when you export?
Yes it does 👍
Great video, thank you xx
Thanks Dave!
Hi Rachel, I need a little advice. When adding your photos to a stock agency, do you select Backgrounds as one of the categories for the database or do you select another category like Objects and Still Life or Lifestyle?
If the image can be used as a background and that’s its main function then use it for sure. It’s a very popular category. 👍 I use whatever category fits best. Try to ask yourself what people might use it for or how they might search for it.
Rachel, I would've never known about the keyword issue had you not explained it.
It appears that you have to have an understanding about how a picture might be used. I guess seasonal considerations are also paramount for ensuring an image is attractive to others on stock photo sites.
When you include your own image or likeness (or anyone else's for that matter) do I presume correctly that a model release of some kind also has to be included with your submission?
Wouldn't that be a blast if your face appeared on a magazine cover. The one with you holding a pumpkin reminded me of many of the cottage/outdoor life type magazines.
Hi David! I don't know why this comment only now came in... but yes, any images with people have to have a model release, even when it's myself :). I did actually see my face on a magazine cover just recently.. haha! A medical journal. It was cool. Sorry I didn't see your comment until now!
Thank you for showing the keyword generator. I have been uploading to 500px and the keywording has always been a bit of a struggle.
You’re welcome. I totally understand. It’s not the easiest part to do. I’ve felt frustrated many a time. Go for words that not only describe the physical characteristics but also the mood, location, concept, and more. I ask myself, what would an advertiser type in a search bar when trying to find this image?
Great vid. Thanks.
Thank you!!
thanks....sister....very helpfull video...
I’m so glad!! You’re welcome and thanks! 😊
Great advise and video, thank you
Thanks Mark! You’re welcome 😁
I love the photos you took! Thank you telling me what I didn't know. It was very helpful and I didnt know you could that with the keywords. I want to get into stock photography but my main thing is that I don't know what to take a photo of. Big brain frat 😂. But Thank you anyway😎
It can be hard to think of ideas! I completely understand!
thanks for the share, now I tried the keyword tool for one of my photos, it couldn't find any results even though there is result at shutterstock's search page. do you know the reason for that?
Hello, Thank you for this video.
Here, you added the keywords in the image. But should I include the same keywords in stock photography website separately?
Kindly inform me.
Hi Sanjay. If you include the keywords in the image file, usually when you upload it to the stock sites, the keywords will already be filled in on their box. If not, you can try again.
Rachel Lerch Thank you very much.
Hi Rachel, another interesting video with lots of good information. I have two questions for you. One are the files you upload RAW, Tiff or JPEG? also is there a minimum and maximum size that you must upload ? Thanks again for sharing.
Hi Stephen. They are JPEG files. Each site has a different min/max. Shutterstock is 4-50mb. See the technical requirements here - www.shutterstock.com/contributorsupport/articles/kbat02/000006575
thanks 4 shares this trick
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
thank u v much
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Hi Rachel.i love ur videos.i just want to.knw how after u send the pictures to stock agencies?directly frm LR ou PS?n how ?pls can u explain me?thx
Hi! You need to save or export your image to a JPG file. Use the maximum quality. Have you done this yet?
Hi Rachel. Greetings from The Rock (Newfoundland). Thank you for sharing your workflow when it goes to stock photography. Very informative. I was wondering in what file format did you save and uploaded the image to the stock site? Was it a full resolution one? Looking forward to more of your videos. :)
Thanks Marek! Yes full resolution. JPG.
What is your favorite stock photo agency and why?
Thanks:)
I have 3. Shutterstock, Adobe and iStock/Getty. These consistently bring in the most sales. Shutterstock would be my number 1. They really know their business and how to market the images in their databases. The contributor interface is very professional and easy to use.
Rachel, what file type are you uploading to the agencies, what are the limits (dimensions) or what do they want to see?
Thanks
Moonpie
Hi! Always JPG. Each agency has listed on their website what the minimum and maximum resolutions and file sizes they will accept.
You didn't mention about model releases. Is there a way to automate that as well?
I wish Greg!! If you find out a way, let me know. I know for most sites (not all), once you upload a release for a person you can easily reuse it by checking it off (it gets saved) but not all sites allow this.
The height apple very sweet, I do not take it for me. Thank for your sharing video. 🍎👌👍
Love you always.
Aw
I have no idea what to say... haha. Thank you! That’s very kind :)
Wow! You haven't changed at all in the last two years.
Haha! Really?
Interesting. I’d love to know more. Is stock photography really worth it or is it just a way to possibly make a few bucks on images that would otherwise just sit on your computer doing nothing?
In my experience (which may be different for others), if you're willing to put in a lt of work, the income can be not bad - but I think it's great in that you learn a lot as a photographer, and the monthly deposit in your bank account is nice - especially on those months when you haven't actually done anything! Good for passive income
what are some good stock agency to go with for people just starting out in this type of photography
I would suggest to start with Shutterstock and then add iStock/Getty and Adobe!
Rachel Lerch sounds good thank you
I wonder why you do not keyword in Lightroom, where you can keyword batches of images?
Only because Lightroom alphabetizes the keywords and some sites want them in order of importance.
Rachel Lerch thank you that makes sense
Happy to help! Anytime!
Great video nice
Thank you!
Rachel, two questions, 1/. should I put my name of a finished picture? 2/. Do any of these companies take out taxes or send you 1099s at the end of the year for income reporting or is this just considered a hobby?
Thanks
Moonpie
Hi. So 1) only put your name in the copyright space of the metadata... not on the image like a watermark. And 2) taxes. Yes. Some companies take off taxes, but others don’t and then you have to declare that income on your tax return.
@@RachelLerch thank you so much for responding, big cyber hug for being so kind.
Moonpie
How would do the same thing with your iPad or iPhone?
Good question! I’m not an expert on phone photography. There’s a channel that is great - Landscape Phoneography. He gives lots of info on how he uses his phone for photography.
Thank you for your instant reply...as you can tell I am just discovering the Shutterstock route. What I meant to ask was how do you join shutterstock and post photos from an iPhone or iPad. I real realize this is not your area but was hoping you could point me in the right direction..
I have enjoyed your tutorials and thank you again for your reply....
I have only uploaded from a desktop computer since that's where my files are but I believe if you have images on your device, you can upload them through the agency's app. Try downloading the contributor app and going from there. I know many agencies have this option.
N Rachel i cant publish photos from LR To shuttersyock or alamy or anoter sites.how to set up them pls?thx
Hi Lulu! Save your images as JPG files using maximum quality and upload those. Have you done this yet?
@@RachelLerch hi...i hv done it but now how to do pls? Thx
Oh ok. Sure! Do you already have an account on Shutterstock? Start here: submit.shutterstock.com/. Create an account and then submit. Shutterstock will assess the images and respond. There’s lots of information on that page as well about submitting. Each agency is slightly different but the overall process is the same.
good information … thank you :-))
Thanks Bob and you’re welcome!
I have, like 47 questions, lol. My biggest hurdle is the keywording. 50 per image? Really? Anyway do you have a referral link for shutterstock or any of the other sites you use? - thanks in advance
Hi Ken! Yeah 50. I know right? Luckily it gets easier. Definitely use a keyword tool. And I do a lot of copy pasting between similar images. I do have referral links. Give me a minute and I’ll comment again with them! :)

WHoo-Hoo First images (22) approved on shutterstock and I have been "accepted" for iphoto...
Thank you
Woohoo!! Congratulations Ken!! You rock!
Whtas ur shutterstock portfolio?
i'm just trying to get people to watch my channel..how do you grow a channel
That’s a good question! I guess my own theory is to keep learning and improving my videos and keep uploading at regular intervals. It can be slow, I know. I try to be active in a few communities on Facebook too. One of the perks of UA-cam (the best one) is the friends you make!
Why are you typing it in Photoshop? Much easier to use Lightroom meta data and sync similar images.
True! Except when you export to jpg, Lightroom alphabetizes the list and some agencies want the most important and relevant first.
@@RachelLerch Ah, I have only used Shutterstock. That explains a lot. Strange LR does not provide that as a feature. Would be nice to speed up that process though.
I agree wholeheartedly!
is it a joke?
