have you ever deal with model or property release? can you share your experience? Maybe even made a video when you ask your model or property owner to sign the release.
I've mentioned it before, but I use the app "Easy Release" (costs $10 last I checked) and just have them sign the release on my phone. It e-mails a PDF to both me and them, and then I simply upload that PDF to stock platforms.
thanks for sharing advice that will increase competition for you. have you ever been asked to send in your press credential for editorial photos?....i just did.
I love your content and your channel. Great job! I have a couple of questions which might be video suggestions. First how did you get the rights to shoot the Washington Post logo inside the The Washington Post building? Maybe you could do a video on how to get signed releases or how to approach the right people for releases? Second could you do another video on the other sites you sell stock images to, and rank them according to how you like interacting with them and your return on investment? Do you ever pay to upload photos for sale? Thanks again for all of your hard work producing shooting and editing.
I understand editorial content vs commercial content. My question should have been better stated how did you not get kicked out of the lobby when you started taking the photo? I still would like to see a video on getting releases.
Hey Leo, the Washington Post actually hosted a meetup for photographers that I attended... so picture taking was encouraged. And that was uploaded as an editorial, not commercial, image. As for your other questions, I’ll keep them in mind for future videos 😊
Beautiful images as usual. This may sound odd at first but I'm surprised you got away with that photo which features "The Washington Post" text filling the frame. I did read on one of the stock agencies a few years ago (can't remember which one) that for editorial images, you can't have logos or brand names etc filling up a significant portion of the frame / can't have them appearing too large. So Ive always avoided that in my editorial photos.
Some stock agencies don’t allow that (like adobe), but Shutterstock does. I’ve actually seen a few SS accounts where people literally just photograph and upload storefront logos. It’s okay as long as you upload them as editorial images :)
Hey Amanda! It's actually super easy, you just download Cyberduck or Filezilla, log in with your Shutterstock login information and drop the files in. That's it. I think it would be a super boring video lol. www.shutterstock.com/contributorsupport/articles/kbat02/000006653
Nicole, if Washington Post wants that photo for commercial use what would have to happen? Do they need to grant you a property release and then you can list it as commercial? I've been thinking about it in the context of new power tools being put to good use and selling shots like that to brand owners.
If you sell the photo to the Post itself, then I doubt you need a release form because they own the property. That would be kind of silly and superfluous. If you sell it to someone else then of course you'd need a release form.
01:46 good information. but how did the buyer's of shutterstock known you uploaded that photo with that name? Hi Pedro, try doing a reverse Google image search with your photos! That might help you find where they are being used on the internet. But if they are being used in a print product or elsewhere, you will probably not find them.
@@NicoleGlass Thanks, hummmm, sorry 4 the stupid question, but reverse google search, give a tip please, lol watt to right on the search engine. Sooo sorry Nicole.
Another great video Nicole, was wondering since I am a newbie to stock photography. The photo of the lady with the wine glass, do you need a model release for a photo like that since you can't see a face and make out who she or even he is. And do find you sell more Editorial photos Vs other kinds?
Hi Mike, I did not have a model release for that photo. I definitely sell more editorial photos, but more than 80 percent of my content is editorial. So that would simply make sense. UA-camr Zdenka Darula has 12,000 photos that are primarily all commercial, and of course she sells primarily commercial images.
@@NicoleGlass Thank you so much for all the help. One day I get this nailed down 👍 This is the confusing stuff for me, the shooting photos is easy LOL Take care.
Hi, Thank you for sharing your experience, very inspiring stuff. I just started contributing to few stock photography sites. I'm interested to know which of the photos you present in your videos are commercial licenced and which are editorial licenced. Some are obvious but some are not so much for me at least. For example the straw photo.
It is definitely a mix. The straws in particular are editorial because they are Starbucks branded. I would recommend that you go to shutterstock.com and type in some keywords and see how other people upload the photos. You can tell if they're editorial or commercial based on the way they write the captions.
I have been looking your shutterstock videos a lot lately coz I am going to start in shutterstock. But in youtube, I found a video which tells you how to free download shutterstock images without the watermark. It works. So, is shutterstock really worth it if that's the case? You cannot download them in HD however.
However useful all these 'Shutterstock videos' are, they're also making me slightly worried that (to some extent at least), the whole stock photography market is a biiiit geared towards USA... or at the very least, capitol cities - but the only way to find out if it works from the countryside of a small country, is to try I guess =)
There is no definite answer for this, but obviously it's much easier to rank in search results when there are a few thousand results than when there are millions.
Check out my interview with a Shutterstock CUSTOMER to see which photos he likes to buy - and what he wishes more photographers would upload: ua-cam.com/video/AaNOJrvRpGQ/v-deo.html
Success. Last week I sold my first image on Shutterstock. A beautiful dragonfly. I'm wondering if there is any way to find out where it is being used. Keep up the good work. I love your videos.
Try a reverse image search on Google. If you go to Google and click images in the top right, next to the search box there is a camera icon that will allow you to upload a photo to search for.
Thanks so much Steve! Try doing a reverse Google image search. Just go to images.google.com, drag your image into the search and see what comes up. If you can't find anything, then your photo may have been used offline somewhere.
Good video... again :) It would be interesting to know if you are planning what to photograph, or if you just photograph "everything" you see? I know you have to do some planning, but how do you do the planning? Do you get an idea and then search Shutterstock to see if your idea are oversaturated? Hope I gave you an idea for a forthcoming video :) By the way... it's fun to see that your channel are growing quite fast :)
It's a mix of both. For example, I met some friends at the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. yesterday. Of course, I took photos of the blossoms (which are saturated) for myself and I took photos with friends. But while I was there, I also snapped a few photos of the tourists and the crowds, which I will certainly upload to SS. So I usually have a general idea of what will potentially do well, but I usually don't go out of my way to take the photos - I take them when I am out and doing something already. Thanks for the video suggestion:)
Hi Nicole! Great and very informative videos. :) Only 1 quick question at the moment. If you upload a photo to Shutterstock as an "editorial" piece, am I correct to assume that the photo will only show up under the "Editorial" category as opposed to "all images" on the first screen.
Hi Nicole! For your ghost tour photo in St Augustine, since the ghost tour was ticketed, did that matter? Or were you still able to post as an editorial photo?
What is your thought on sites like pexels? Lots of free high quality images. Could this ruin the hard work that stockphotographers are putting into it?
Potentially, I'll have to look more into it! But Shutterstock is so cheap for companies to sign up for anyway that I don't think they would start searching the Internet for free sites. I work for a government organization that uses 2 different stock platforms and they honestly don't care what they pay... they just care about the quality of what they can get.
Hi Thomas, I do a minor color correction on all of my photos before uploading. Nothing too major, since I want to give clients the ability to adjust the photos according to their needs.
Hi Nicole...When an image is competing with 5,000,000 others of same keyword search, such as ghost town, are search results returned in order of most recent to oldest? If so, is it possible to resubmit what is essentially the same photo but tweaked in edit, such as a slight color grading change? This could keep the same personal library current. I don't see this as 'cheating', as this is a business, and the consumer may not have time to go through 5,000,000 photos for my best image taken 3 years ago buried on page 83 of the returned search results. Please reply
This is going to be kind of an abstract question... I have a program that allows me to use 3d assets from a game. I can use 3d models and effects to create an environment. (I take screen shots from those environments and edit them to make them look realistic). Would it still be possible to post those on Shutterstock or not?
I'm pretty sure that you would not be allowed to do that. You have to be the creator of all parts of the image. But I'm not 100% sure because I have not researched this topic in particular. I would recommend that you ask that question in the Shutterstock Forum.
On the topic of other Stock Photography platforms... I've looked around and some seem to have an exclusivity clause for images you upload. That is you can only list a particular stock photo on their site, no cross posting. I've looked at Shutterstock and can't recall but thought it might be a useful question for others. Does Shutterstock have this sort of policy?
Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have Zenfolio for unlimited storage and it's pretty great. But I have more than 20 TB of photos and videos at this point... with the 4k video files I create, I go through 100 GB in like a week!
I create artistic images for use as backgrounds and textures, and have noticed that the image sizes uploaded by similar artists are larger, 5000 x 3333 pix as opposed to the lower resolution that my 12.2 MP camera can create. Do you think I need a camera with more MP to be able to complete?
Here are the technical requirements: www.shutterstock.com/contributorsupport/articles/kbat02/000006575 As long as they meet all of those points, then you're fine.
hallo from Greece Nicole! i have 2 questions... i just make my shutterstock acount and i have allready upload 6 videos,no photo.. i use to upload at blackbox but ill try to shutterstock too from today.. But at contributor screen i still have this masage ''Please provide us your payout details so that we can pay you once you accrue earnings.'' i allready take care about that , i mean i change it ,to paypal and Minimum payout at 35 and click save settings, all other platform is full and correct informed.. why i still have this masage?? it disapears after 1 of April when changes informed?? and 2 question is ,they dont ask me pasport or driving license, is my email enough for them??
Hi Kostas, I am not sure what is happening on the back end. When I signed up, I had to fill out a tax form, my PayPal information and submit a photo of my ID. Maybe since you are switching from Blackbox to Shutterstock, you have to fill all that in again. If you are doing everything correctly, try reaching out to Shutterstock for help.

Honestly I think it's probably not worth your efforts. If you have some sort of rare species, or if you're photographing people interacting with the flowers, that would be different. But random photos of tulips and things like that.. probably not where you should put your energy. If you have the photos already it doesn't hurt to put them up, but I wouldn't go out of my way to obtain them.
@@NicoleGlass I think I knew this answer. lol Going to an Aboretum tomorrow and was thinking if it was opportunity. Its a pain to get releases from strangers. Maybe I will focus on other things during the trip instead of the flowers. Thank you!

@@RosasUtopia At this point I don't have any classes. I do this on the side! Still living that 9-5 office life. What were the reasons your videos were rejected?

You can definitely try it and see if they let that through. I have a few photos where the cropping is different and they were both accepted.
Do you investigate search results before shooting? So you can find those nishes?
On occasion. I have a pretty good idea of what has been photographed in my area and what is missing.
I would recommend that you ask that question in the Shutterstock Forum.
i love you Nicole ☺😌❤
On the topic of other Stock Photography platforms... I've looked around and some seem to have an exclusivity clause for images you upload. That is you can only list a particular stock photo on their site, no cross posting.
I've looked at Shutterstock and can't recall but thought it might be a useful question for others. Does Shutterstock have this sort of policy?
No it doesn't
How do you manage your storage? Do you shoot RAW or JPEG ?
@Bitwise Magick That is a perfect explanation, couldn't have said it better! The number of hard drives I have is getting out of control.
Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have Zenfolio for unlimited storage and it's pretty great. But I have more than 20 TB of photos and videos at this point... with the 4k video files I create, I go through 100 GB in like a week!
Can you add or change keywords after you submit the photo?
Yes, go to your catalogue manager to do that :)
@@NicoleGlass Thank you!
I create artistic images for use as backgrounds and textures, and have noticed that the image sizes uploaded by similar artists are larger, 5000 x 3333 pix as opposed to the lower resolution that my 12.2 MP camera can create. Do you think I need a camera with more MP to be able to complete?
You can definitely upload images with what you have, but of course, the higher quality your images are, the more likely they are to stand out.
@@NicoleGlass thank you for replying, I think I'll look into affordable upgrades...
thanks!
I usually upload JPEG about 10 to 14 MB in size, is that fine or should I reduce the size of images?
Here are the technical requirements: www.shutterstock.com/contributorsupport/articles/kbat02/000006575 As long as they meet all of those points, then you're fine.
hi nicole, what drone ur using?
DJI Phantom 4 Pro
I learned lot from you.
Awesome :)
hallo from Greece Nicole! i have 2 questions...
i just make my shutterstock acount and i have allready upload 6 videos,no photo..
i use to upload at blackbox but ill try to shutterstock too from today..
But at contributor screen i still have this masage
''Please provide us your payout details so that we can pay you once you accrue earnings.''
i allready take care about that , i mean i change it ,to paypal and Minimum payout at 35 and click save settings,
all other platform is full and correct informed.. why i still have this masage?? it disapears after 1 of April when changes informed??
and 2 question is ,they dont ask me pasport or driving license, is my email enough for them??
Hi Kostas, I am not sure what is happening on the back end. When I signed up, I had to fill out a tax form, my PayPal information and submit a photo of my ID. Maybe since you are switching from Blackbox to Shutterstock, you have to fill all that in again. If you are doing everything correctly, try reaching out to Shutterstock for help.

Thanks for response..
Ι send them email some hours before and im waiting ..i upload more videos and some images in mindtime but arent available at public yet..
Thanks again..
I am from India and I am a small stock photographer reply hi please
Why did Shutterstock accepted a photo of a ghost tour where you must get a ticket?
Do youtubers get paid when we skip ads..... if so I’ll be sure to watch the ads for all your videos
It only counts if the ad is watched. I appreciate you!
👍
I know flowers are really saturated. Do you think its a total waste of time to take photos of flowers to upload?
Thank you!
@@RosasUtopia Even if you don't get releases, you can upload images of people taken in public places as editorial images. Or use yourself as your own model ;)
@@NicoleGlass True...Iam still new so I forget that. Do you give any classes? I need help on uploading video. All 5 of my uploads were not approved. I know its me but I dont know how to fix it. Would love a class with you if you offer them...I guess I can look that up in your discription box if you have it.
@@RosasUtopia At this point I don't have any classes. I do this on the side! Still living that 9-5 office life. What were the reasons your videos were rejected?
So, I need to have at least 1000 photos on shutter stock
That would be a good start
3:27 Wait a second ...
Is that made from Harry Potter font? 🤔
Hmm which came first, Harry Potter or the Post?
Have you made money with photos of famous people ?
Politicians, yes.
Shutterstock has proven to be a pain lately. They rejected a picture because they said it showed a trademark, which they did not explain. They arbitrarily reject, and have become too hard to post with.
Should've post as editoral
👌🏽
Thank you.
