    In summary:
    youtube,
    affiliate links ,
    sell PDFs (contracts),
    blogging,
    lightroom presets,
    t-shrits,
    stock photo,
    stock video,
    prints (fine art america, great big canvas, image kind, cafe press, red bubble zazzle, society 6),
    etsy(costs money to sell, for selling prints and products),
    ebooks,
    video courses(self host or udemy)
    I would still recommend watching the video to increase this awesome channel's watch-time and pay her back for all the valuable info she shares!

    Great video, Nicole.
    My passive income sources:
    1. Dividends from stocks... Has not been doing well recently.

    For the Get Rich Quick seminars and courses industry, they are selling Passive Income. The accepted definition for passive income is "Do something once, earn from it multiple times." It's not money for nothing. It's what happens after making the investment in your hard earned money or your time to create something. To multiply the effect you do all of that again but the first one is already in play.
    I think that's the closest to stock photography. Of course it took work up front but we are submitting one asset, an image or a clip, with the expectation to get paid for it multiple times with no further work done on that specific asset. It's passive after the point where you upload it.

    Great ideas! I have an e-book that's published on Amazon. To be honest I probably don't make more than when it was a PDF sold directly through my website (Amazon's cut is pretty big). I'm thinking of adapting it to an audiobook to see how that does.

    Oh Nicole where do I start? :D I would like to have all of those sources of "passive" income of course. Right now I focus on my website with a blog (and a twist). However, I think that the most important message in this video is that none of those sources is truly passive. Any content gets old and that happens quickly these days, especially if it is about technology/equipment. Anything else, as I am sure you know, will not get shown to anybody if the creator stops uploading new content. I think that is how the algorithms work. I could be wrong but that is why I find it difficult to stay motivated in my online journey. :) Thanks for the video anyways. It is nice to have one go to spot where all of those sources are laid out for us.

    • @dazzlingdeb8427
      @dazzlingdeb8427 5 років тому

      Marek Bromberek Yes, you have to keep uploading new content. But for instance, I just sold a Xmas photo that I had uploaded last December.
      It’s passive income in the sense that once I got it accepted by Shutterstock, I didn’t touch it ever again. It took 9 months to sell it, but it sold. And it’s August!

  • @HaniSantosa

    Sure, please talk about other topics too. I think I would like your traveling photos/videos (since I like traveling but don't have enough money and time to do it consistently). Btw, this kind of thing (talking outside the original topics of a youtube channel) is done by a lot of youtubers. . For example, I know a youtuber who starts talking about photography, but then lately also adds photomanipulations in his videos. Another one starts as a vector graphics channel, but then adds raster graphics also. And so on.

  • @modfarmgirl5671
    @modfarmgirl5671 5 років тому +2

    Sorry if this had been mentioned in your other videos before, but is it better to use your real name or a business or profile name when selling stock photography? I ask this particularly if you sell editorial photos, and you take pictures of say, a Buffalo in the National Park you live next to, and it gets featured in a news article about a buffalo goring a tourist, and your community you live in sees that it was you who had the photo used for, you could say, bad press. Or do most editorial photos not even give photo credit? I really appreciate your videos, pure gold!

    • @dazzlingdeb8427
      @dazzlingdeb8427 5 років тому +1

      Modfarmgirl I can’t speak for Nicole, but IMO, why not use your real name? I usually do see photo credits in captions. I certainly think they should give credit!
      If you’ve managed to capture a newsworthy image, think of yourself as a journalist. You’re not drawing conclusions about the incident. You’re reporting the facts with your camera as they occurred. You’re a visual journalist.
      Many of my editorial photos are not newsworthy in the sense that I took photos of a protest or something like that. Most of my editorial photos are of places and show events or businesses or locations where obtaining a release isn’t feasible.
      But yes. In my case, I want my name out there. It’s my artwork that’s being used, it’s my craft... which sometimes means it’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  5 років тому +2

      The name you use is up to you, but for editorial photos, the client is supposed to give photo credit. So it is a good way to build up a portfolio. Sometimes your photos could end up in well known publications.

  • @Sirjohnny

    great video. When you think about being truly passive it comes from a few strategic moves. It has to be something you own and control exclusively, which is timeless in its demand. Think of patents, copyrights, and licensing agreements, etc. So, the questions turns to how you can accomplish this as a photographer. It could be as hard as creating the photographic piece of equipment that every one has to have to compete, to as simple as a licensed process that makes the demand last for ever. They say necessity is the king of inventions, and for a reason. Capitalizing on what you have created for yourself, which could also solve other photographers problems, or image curator's needs is the best place to start.

    I’ve really enjoyed your videos. Good info, you come across as authentic and real and not too over the top - hyper excited ... which no offence but I find some UA-camrs can be (not all) when they present themselves publicly.
    I’m a photographer looking to make a living out of my craft in this ever changing digital age. I would love to hear your thoughts on selling digital downloads of photo art prints. Selling the file itself so the customer can print the image and frame it for their personal wall art etc...
    There is a lot of this happening on Etsy but it also seems a lot of the images sold are stock images and not unique as everyone is selling the same image.
    Thanks and look forward to hearing your reply.

    I’d like to get into selling work for print and media but seems most papers are happy with an iPhone photo from their reporter.
    I’ve sold prints at shows (before the kids were born) and that could bring in £100 or so for work you’ve already got but it’s quite a lot of effort to set up and manage over a day.

    How much you can get on stock video footage? My brother goes timelapses and he is complaining that shotterstock is making some kind of crazy discounts on he’s footages and selling them for 6$ instead of original price around 80$ and they justify that this is because not much was sold for a full price! And the don’t even gave him an option to opt out from this clearance selling

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  5 років тому

      In that case I would probably recommend that he uses Pond5 instead. On Pond5, he can set his own prices and prevent those kind of sales.
      I've never had a video make me less than $20 but I hear it happens to people every so often, unfortunately. I'm guessing someone downloaded super low quality SD versions of his clips.

      Hey Timon, I'll keep it in mind but I think it would be a pretty boring video. Most stock platforms allow you to upload the same content wherever you want. The exception is Getty Images, which requires exclusivity. The other main ones (Adobe, Shutterstock, Pond5, etc.) allow you to sell other places as well.

    An interesting topic could be using other peoples stock images to extract elements which could be used to form a composite image of your own which you then go on to sell as stock. The legalities of doing this and how it personally makes you feel? I went as far as using a free stock image from a site but didn't go on to sell it as it just didn't sit well with me, as it was not 100% my work hmmm but maybe lost of people do this? However there was good reason for it as it was a subject that I would never be able to photograph myself.

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  5 років тому

      Definitely an interesting topic. I've tried to research the legalities of creating stock photos with other stock photos (in the form of composites) but there is not much solid information out there about it. I will do some more research.

Having an actual website as a central to everything just makes more sense in my case, although I was considering Udemy at some point. I don't have a massive following and no UA-cam channel (at least for now, kinda tempted to start one), but I do have ~25K followers on Instagram.
    It has been my dream to live the "freedom" artist life for 14 years. Took a long time to even get this far, and I'm still not earning a cent, haha.
    Anyways, keep up with the videos, you just got a new subscriber. :)

    Danke für Deine Videos, ich finde sie sehr inspirierend. Du bist echt klasse. 😎👍 And thank you for THIS video. It is a great inspiration what to do with all that pictures that accumulate on my harddisks. 😄 I learned a lot from you about stock photography especially about uploading to shutterstock. I can imagine, that you don‘t want to post vids about stock photography for ever. Personally i would be very interested in vlogstyle insights, how you master the everyday challenge of your life, being a professional photographer.

    Hi, great video! It's very informative. Can you talk a little bit about stock photos income and taxes? Since you get a stream of income from stock photos or videos, do you have to claim that? If so what's the process

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  5 років тому +1

      You get a 1099 Miscellaneous Income form from Shutterstock every year and you just add that to your taxes. There's really nothing unusual about it. You report it like you would report any 1099 form.

    • @DarkSilver19
      @DarkSilver19 5 років тому

      @@NicoleGlass so on top of getting small percentage of your stock sale (because those sites take a portion) you also have to account of taxes on your earning, you'll end up with much less right ?

    • @NicoleGlass
      @NicoleGlass  5 років тому +1

      Yes. But like with any business, you can declare any camera related expenses. I usually declare a LOT of expenses so it definitely brings my taxes down.

    Residuals, like from songs or tv/movie appearances is passive income. So, most passive income requires at last some prior work. Even investing requires research in your investment.
