Most dogs find their own "Den" in the home,usually under a bed. One of my deceased Collies use to take one of the rugs in with her lol . She was happy. Only use I have for cages is during travelling by car for safety .
We rescued a Bichon Frise who had been kept in a cage for her first 2 years of life. She has no idea how to play, deal with other animals and it took a year before she would allow my husband to touch her. When we first got her we purchased a crate and used it exactly twice. She would howl, cry, defecate, pee and hurt herself - it was pure HELL for her to be in one so we never used it again. We have had her for nearly 7 years at the end of May and she is one of our greatest joys. She still has no playing desire but she makes a great "couch potato" for me ! So glad you shared your story. I adopted a Chihuahua mix from the local shelter a year ago. He was thought to be about 2 yrs then. Sometimes you don't know what they've endured. He has never liked to play with toys and only is interested in licking, softly biting my hands/fingers and just "wrestling" with me! I've always thought it so strange since other dogs I've had always enjoyed toys. He is still leery of men but is doing better if he sees I'm ok with the person. The only time he was in a kennel was when I first brought him home from the shelter & I was away at work. However, the kennel disappeared quickly. Scooter now sleeps with me every night. Lots of TLC for my "funny little fella". :-) Very happy to hear your dear Curly Girl is doing so well and is such a joy to you and your husband! :-)

@seaashellxx She was scared to death of small spaces since her whole first 2 years of life was spent in a cage. Also, we had to put her to sleep in Feb.of 2019, kidney disease.
Never crated any of our dogs. The first 2 preferred to sleep in bed with us, our current and 3rd dog prefers to sleep either on the floor at the foot of the bed or on his big pillow in the living room. He starts out on the bed to "warm it up" for me. :) He's a very large dog and we both do not fit on the bed at the same time.
We adopted our current dog as an adult but our first 2 were puppies when we got them. For the first year they were contained in a separate room, usually the kitchen with baby gates at the doorways, even after potty training until they were past the chewing on everything stage and could be trusted to roam around the house.

ADVICE!! I just moved and have found that my next door neighbor keeps her rather large dog in a crate. I can hear this dog whining in every room and my cats sense this animal is in distress. What do I do? I can’t even sleep in my bedroom because I feel awful for this dog. Why have a dog?
I have never created a dog of mine, because I just can't do it. My baby sleeps with me, if I'm not home she sleeps with my son, if I have had to go away we go to dig friendly motels or she sleeps at her foster mother's house, and as she is well travelled well behaved and cute everybody loves her.
Did you not watch the video? He said when used APPROPRIATELY/CORRECTLY it’s fine. He never said it’s abusive he said when people abuse the crate and lock the dog in it all day it gives the dog health and behavioral issues which is true otherwise it can be a safe and beneficial when used correctly for short periods of time.
Never had the need or desire to put my dogs in a cage, you can call it a crate, but it’s a cage. They are for human convenience not for the dog. Having had dogs my whole life this is another Americanism that has become what people consider necessary, without doing research as to why not to!
I’m American and I despise crating dogs. Basically defeats one of the purposes of a dog too, how’s he going to protect my family in a cage. I wouldn’t want to be locked in a cage for 5 hours or more
It's a cage if you went to a zoo and saw all the animals locked in cages there would be an out cry but loads of people lock their dog in for hours on end ,'it's absolute abuse
Don't be so dramatic. Is it a perfect solution? Nothing in life is. The vast majority of these animals live pampered lives with the best veterinary care money can buy and love and attention the vast majority of the time. Most people have these things that they have to do to keep food coming in and the lights on, they're called jobs. 😂
@_eXraided_ I agree I work in the dog industry. Thousands of dogs are left in homes, uncaged a well exercised well simulated dog is normally absolutely fine left alone for a couple of hours , this locking dogs in little plastic/metal prisons is awful
@@juliecrowe5252 💯👍 I have 5 large dogs one I stole from an owner I had given a puppy too, found out he wasn't being cared for other than the bare minimum food and water and had asked the owner that I was more than willing to take him back if he couldn't care for him how he should, but he refused so I took him when he wasn't home. My point is that I love dogs not just dogs all animals so it boggles my mind when you have these people claiming they love dogs, but don't see nothing wrong with keeping their dogs locked in a cage for hours and hours on end, heck even if it's just for an hour is cruel. I said this before and I'll say it again, there is no excuse whatsoever to have a crate PERIOD!! If people are worried about furniture getting damaged do what I do to train my dogs is we would section parts of the house off for a period of time the living room for example for a few weeks or a month depending on the dog and after that you can either remove the barrier or leave it there, but after awhile the dogs are used to having that place off limits. Any behavioral issues isn't the dogs fault, but the owners. If they don't have the patience or time to properly training their dogs then they shouldn't have one.

I never had crates/cages for any of my dogs that i had. If i get a very young puppy i often just puppy proof one of the bedrooms the best i can with food, water, puppypads on floor, and keeping anything that may be dangerous for puppy out of reach. At worse they have accident and maybe chew some furniture or something else and all you have to do is correct hem on that behaviors'. It takes time and patients but always works. Luckily these days its easier as their always someone at the house and the puppies whenever we get one have an older dog they often learn from. Recently got a 5 month year old husky, which is older than what we normally get but she doing very well and learns fast from watching our lab/shepherd mix that we have.
Sorry for anyone wanting to crate their pups, I find the dog reacting way better to some safe space in the living. Worked wonders from day 1 (his pen made him super super hysterical), the living room is just wonderful.

I can’t imagine putting an animal in a little tiny cage for any period of time. I have one in the living room with the door open that he goes in when he wants but I don’t close the door.
We adopted a 2yo chi-jack russel mix who was already crate trained. He had such separation anxiety and was generally a naughty guy when left alone, even for short periods of time, that we found it was better to have him in the crate. Even at bedtime, he's in the crate. If he's there and we forget to close the door, he gets anxious and whiny. He doesn't protest going in at all and it generally calms him down to be there.
Woah, woah, woah! if it's unfit to the point where it causes deformity and stress, it's definitely cage. A crate is a place where your dog can go to feel safer, it should always be big enough so that they can turn around and move effortlessly, and should never be used as a punishment, always a safe spot to snuggle in. It should not be used if it's not needed, and i apologize that some people actually do this, and treat a crate as a cage, gives a bad rap for all of us, we do not support caging your dog!
My dog loves her house (crate). As a matter of fact when she had two ACL surgeries she needed to stay crated for two weeks each time. I had to buy a very large crate to make sure she was comfortable. I had every intention of taking it down and just having her bed out. But that did not fly, she would continually stare at the place I kept her crate and wake up during the night pacing and looking for her house. So here we are her huge crate has to be out taking a lot of space that I could use but she loves it and chooses to stay in it day and night as she pleases. The door is open all the time. She was crate trained as a puppy so this is her normal and she prefers it. But we use it the right way we never punish her in her crate that's the key.🙃
Having the door open is completely different. I 100% agree that a small space is great for a dog to have as an option. The idea of closing the cage and leaving them in there at night is so wrong.
Cribs are made so your child doesn‘t fall out of the bed and hurts himself in the night. Also babys are not allowed to crawl out of the bed in the night because it can hurt himself while falling down the stairs. However a crate isn‘t made to protect your dog from hurting himself😂 it‘s made because you crazy Americans can‘t train your dog to not disturb Furniture or something. I had a dog for 12 years and i never used a crate, he never chewed on furniture or anything like that.

Wild dogs and wolves aren’t den animals. They literally find a den to give birth in and stay there only for a few weeks then find a place out in the open.
I don't believe in crates. I have trained our dog for a crate, but only for an emergency use, such as during a hurricane and we need to find safe shelter. Our dog prefers our company - We are his safe place. But he doesn't get into anything when we are gone!
Crates keep them out of trouble when they are puppies and if they are being supervised they should have a leash on them at all times. Their should be no freedom in early stages
I am getting an adult rescue dog. The shelter said he is crate trained and often stays in his crate while the other dogs roam free. I personally would prefer having him sleep in my bed (my son wants him in his bed). I also don't want to force him to do something he is not comfortable with. So I am buying a crate as an OPTION not a requirement. I'll leave the door open and if he wants he can spend his time in there. As a family we would prefer him to roam freely around the house. The bathroom and the basement are the only off limit rooms and they both have doors that will remain closed. I hope he chooses to co-sleep. I don't think you should force dogs who are use to crates to integrate the way you want when you want. When they build that bond and trust in you, maybe they will organically choose you over the crate. I still prefer to keep their safe space as an OPTION, even if that safe space is a crate
Thank you; never used a crate for any of my dogs, and I'm getting a new puppy because I've been lonely since my last furbaby died of old age but as I look around at videos about getting a dog everyone talks about crates and crate training. I can see their uses, it's probably better to crate train a dog than to let it run free when you're not home and risk it getting into something dangerous, or if you adopt a territorial/aggressive animal and you need to contain him while visitors are around, etc. And some dogs like their "houses"-- my grandpa's dog had a dog house (no door) in the back yard and that dog loved hanging out in his little den. The cat even would go in there and curl up with him and they'd take naps together. Glad to hear from someone though that it's not such a big necessity, because I probably won't use one unless there is some absolute need.
I had to crate my Alaskan Malamute dog over a 13 hr. period on a plane. I purchased it big enough that I would consider to take a long flight in it or even camp in it. Never again did she use it choosing her own dens from within the structures our home provided like underneath desks or under the deck where for additional safety as she did like to wander she was placed on a line. Outdoor kennels are a better idea if you are leaving them for long periods of time with an internal shelter form the weather. As long as a dog is not considered as an accessory and they are treated well whatever works is a choice we all make as individuals so thanks Dr. Jones for remaining on the fence lol
My dog sleeps with me most of the time but she does have a kennel and the door stays open for him and sometimes he goes in during the night. Door is never locked. Except if I leave, he has anxiety issues of wanting to tear up things if I am gone. But it is funny, when he sees me pick up my purse and get my keys he goes right in the crate. Otherwise he has free rein of the house.
This is exactly how we use the crate. Only for short periods of time and when we are not home. He knows when we are leaving and goes in on his own and sometimes sleeps in his kennel (with the door open). Also, the kennel is large enough for him to move around in and stand comfortably.
the same with my dogs they often will go in there when we are home, usually i if things are hectic like cleaning moving furniture i call their crate their " home " and when i leave they ether go in their crate by themself or i say ok go in your home and they happily go :) i think people that have used crates as punishments will result in a dog that hates crates
I think it just depends on how you train your dog to view the crate I trained my dog to think of the crate as a safe place she has anxiety so she tears up things when I'm not home or she'll cry really loud at the door but if I have crate out she will Calm lay down and sleep in there if I have guests over and she walks in her crate I tell my guests not to bother her because that's just her place where she goes if she doesn't want to be bothered
@munajedski There's no need for a crate period what so ever. Those that do have crates you know are the ones who lock their dogs in there for hours at a time! Crates/cages are abuse period theres no resonable excuse to have one at all. If its to keep the dogs from damaging furniture while you're away thats not the dogs fault but the owner from properly training them. I Dont understand these people. They claim to love their dogs, but are perfectly fine with locking them up for hours.
When deciding what I want for my dog I always ask myself if I would like to be treated in the same manner. So would I like to be crated ? NO is the reply! Dogs aren't devoid of intelligence and feelings but they'll put up with most things to please us and I refuse to take advantage of those feelings they have. DON'T CRATE YOUR DOG IT'S CRUEL.
I have had a Cockerpoo puppy for 5 days now. 10.5 weeks old, no crates. He sleeps through the night in the bedroom, almost completely toilet trained and is already responding to his name, no, okay, good boy etc. It may take a little more work than a crate but he absolutely doesn't want to be locked up, he wants to be touching me in some way. Definitely not necessary.

He was a year old and I'd say within 3 weeks he was house broken (on my bed napping as I type this). Ten weeks is young. Like a child, their bodies need to be mature enough. He will have accidents. I hope you've scouted your home and removed any hazards. He may eat cleaners, electric cords, shoes (puppies teethe). One of my dogs chewed up wood work, another kept pulling down my blinds. Anxiety issues! It's like raising a child. 8-4 is a long day for a puppy. Do you have anyone that could hang with the puppy during the day? To the point, you will need to confine him in some way. For his safety. Have you considered a child proof gate? Even for an adult dog 8 hours is a long time.
We never crated our first dog and he turned out just fine, but I see it as a very good training tool if done correctly and humanely. As long as the dog enjoys it or doesn't mind it, I'm fine with it.
When would be a good time for you to be put in a cage humanely? Calling a prison cell something that needs training just shows how stupid humans are. After our 17 year old, (NEVER caged) darling left us I slowly decided it was time for a new pup. As I started doing my research I was shocked by the proliferation of cage training. I’ve gotten into arguments with strangers who have called me all sorts of names including “cruel and stupid” for not caging. So glad I found this thread, I thought I was the only person in the world who doesn’t support this idiotic, selfish trend!
Hey, So I’m getting a puppy soon, and I personally don’t like crates nor do I want to use a crate but everywhere I look they all say crate train your puppy.. After watching the video and the comments you’ve/they’ve just assured me that I don’t need to crate train a dog.
I’ve had two dogs. One for 12 years since she was a puppy, and another one that we adopted that we had for ten years. We didn’t use a crate for either dog and both were good. The puppy only once chewed on something and that was it. We would leave her home for about four hours when my mom went to work and I went to school and she roamed them house. Later on we moved to a house with a yard and my mom worked at home and so she never had to be home alone for the most part. I seriously cannot imagine keeping her in a crate. She slept in my bed ever since she was a puppy. The first night we got her she was whimpering and so my mom put her in my bed with me. And since then I was her safe space. She also had a blanket under my bed so if she wanted to she could sleep there as well. She usually did that during the day. My second dog was giant so having him in a bed with me wouldn’t have been comfortable at all. Whenever I would come home from college or holidays after I moved out he would just sleep near my bed. He also had his own dog bed. He and my cat would snuggle there. Or he’d just lay down anywhere he felt comfortable. Before we had him he was abused and then given away three times so he had major anxiety at the beginning. But then he got used to our family and felt very safe. I honestly don’t think crates are at all necessary. This whole “den” theory just doesn’t sit well with me because cages are not the same as dens. And wild dogs come and go as they please. Keeping them in a kennel the whole night or during the whole work day is not the same as a wild dog or a wolf going into a den. And frankly it’s a new trend. When I got my puppy back in the 90’s this wasn’t a thing really. Literally millions of people around the world have had dogs and don’t use crates and kennels and their dogs are totally fine and don’t damage their homes.
I have a crate that I used for a transport when moving and the puppy likes to go in it still. I leave the door open always. It's sad :( to see a caged animal.
Crate training didn’t seem like a good idea for me. I still work and that would mean hours of sitting in a metal create so I babygated the laundry room and I have pee pads on side and toys and his bed in the other. Seems to work but potty training outside is still it’s own issue
My dogs use the pee pads all the time, when I don't walk them, they want to pee on them after they smell their pee or another dogs pee it's nature for them
I have a crate for my older dog. Pit bull mix. It’s a way for him to escape the constant, irritating play from my deaf Aussie pup. He can go in there, chew on his Kong, and not have to deal with puppy antics. It’s in the living room, where people are the most, and it doesn’t have walls (just thin cage bars) so he doesn’t feel like he’s being “put away”
Believe what you want. Most pit bull breeds need to be crate trained for anxiety and discipline. It’s not like there locked in a cage all day. The only time we use the crate with the dog is when it’s time for them to go to bed. It’s not inhuman and it’s healthy for most dogs. Though some dogs like mutts, golden retrievers and other dogs do not necessarily need to be crate trained.
My one dog's "crates" are under the coffee table or under my bed; the other dog likes to be out in the open, whether indoors or out. In my opinion, crates are for shipping, and the day my puppies were flown to me was the only day they've ever been crated and ever will be. As "destructive puppies", all that was required to stop damage to furnishings etc. was to tell them "no", give them a bone and - when leaving them home alone - making sure they had an abundance of bones or other healthy teethers :)
Our puppy sleeps next to us, why not? People are like ”I want a dog but not in the house”... Our bedroom, hallway and living are safe so he can walk around in these areas during the night (in the living when going to work), and he's so happy. Always sleeps in the bedroom. We tried a crate and playpen, he got super super hysterical, when we left him in the living he immediately manage 4h+4h alone where I ”came” home during lunch and evening.
My first dog loved her crate but she was destructive when the crate was left open, shoes walls cords ect... we took her crate away from her and she just stopped, she was no longer destructive at all, although she was looking for her crate in the beginning it was not good for her. Our next dog we did no crate and he's been out since a puppy and never chewed anything but his toys. So I understand the crate but I do suggest trying it without one from my experience. But I know it won't be for everyone. The dogs both stay out 100% of the time no crates and no worries.
My dog slept in his crate. It was where his bed was and during the day he was free to roam. He went there on his own when he didn't want to be bothered with people...never had a problem
My first 2 puppies I didn’t crate my walls and furniture got chewed up everyday. My girl had puppies and I keep one...her daughter...I crate her while I’m not home. She has a big crate and she goes in no problem. When I’m home I don’t crate for any reason unless the pup wants to be in there.
Never had a dog but I would never train my dog to stay in a crate. If anything I’ll have a big crate open with comfy pillows just so my baby has their own space, but I wouldn’t lock up my dog.
Believe it or not most dogs prefer sleeping in crates. Why? Because they feel safer so they sleep better, regardless of indoor or outdoor. If you don't believe me try sleeping outside with no shelter. I'm 99.9% sure you won't get a good night sleep because you'll have one eye open the whole time, or you will be jumping at every sound. Dogs are no different. Studies have shown even stray/feral dogs will willingly sleep in a doghouse/crate like structure on their own.
@MatthewSmith-to1hz what a dummy not even the same thing for one you're allowed to leave and go as you please it would be a different story if your spouse or someone else had complete control over you and your movement
Crates aren’t bad. When used correctly, they are amazing tools. I have nine dogs. At feeding time, it is so much easier to feed some of them in crates. I feed twice daily, and not only does feeding certain dogs in crates reduce anxiety, as they don’t all eat at the same pace, and some will stand and stare, causing others to want to eat faster, but it gives them a break. A timeout, if you will. I have multiple that want to play (hard) right after a meal. When crated, those dogs eat slower, and immediately nap after their meal. Here, at my house, we don’t play directly before, or directly after a meal. I work from home, and five days a week, I have a nanny for the dogs. Since my days revolve around my dogs, and they get more than adequate physical and mental stimulation every day, I don’t feel bad that I have several that are crated overnight. Crates, when used properly, are amazing tools. Crating is exactly how I potty trained all of mine so quickly.
I have two dogs a pitbull boxer mix and a small mix pomeranian they both prefer the crate they sleep in there together I have the largest one wire and very open not the travel one with lots of baby blankets they have had for years a big pillow bed and they love it. I do lock them in when I have to work or at bed time because they sleep better... otherwise they pace at night and chase the cats now they "go to bed" on their own when they are tired and get let out first thing in the morning.. I only work a few hours three to four days a week and they just sleep they are older so they don't mind it and they seem less anxious then before I got them their crate I have a smaller one for my little guy but he will only sleep with his big sister lol I think if it's done right as a part of training its beneficial to them because they are den/ pack animals they love each other and their little den it isn't a punishment but it's their area their bed and helpful... they never cry or freak out so I guess if it's over used I can see it being an issue..
My 2 German Shepherds have been crate trained since they were 6 weeks old (now 1.5 yrs). I have been trying unsuccessfully to get them to sleep in the bedroom on plush dog beds with little success. Typically one of them will wake me up in the middle of the night fauning a need to go potty when they really just want to go in their house (we call their crates houses). I'm honestly really sad that they don't want to sleep with us, but I am grateful that we never have to force them in their crates.
My doberman only goes in her crate at night. Because she would probably ruin stuff downstairs downstairs while we where sleeping. And my cat sleeps upstairs and the HATE each other.
I have 2 dogs, 1 is an American bulldog and he's never had to be crated. The 2nd is a French bulldog mix. She is crated only when I leave. And both of them are always crated in the back of my truck. I taught both my dogs that their crate is for safety. We get busy in our house and it gets loud with all the kids so my dogs find refuge in theirs ...
It’s crate TRAINING and what they get right is that you should NEVER crate a dog at nighttime. You should also not confine your dog to a certain room or floor of your house. Train them not to go in the bedroom, living room etc. It’s gross, it’s wrong to confine a dog… if you fail to train your dog to not go into particular rooms or to do particular things that’s a training failure and should not be compensated for by putting them in a tiny cage. Work harder, it’s difficult but not impossible to train your dog not to chew on your couch.
im planning to buy a crate for my dog, and what Im planning to do is to leave the door open and train my dog to love her crate and make it her comfort zone.
Recently got a springer spaniel puppy. Currently 11 weeks old. I'm the only person with a puppy from the litter who hasn't crate trained. He's too intelligent and hates being confined. It has been more effort, though crating is mostly about convenience for the owner. I used baby gates to keep him off the stairs and just puppy-proofed the house.
I never ever believed in crate training but we have a puppy not a adult dog. Should I put a crate in his mudroom area and give him the option or just not buy one?? Everyone says start them young for training purposes. With our last dog we adopted him at 1 years old and never bought a crate.
I think it depends a lot on the dog honestly. I had a dog that had extreme anxiety and couldn’t be crated. My dog growing up wasn’t crate-trained either but she generally did well with housebreaking and integrating into family life. There are other methods but I do think crating is at least worth trying if you have a puppy. It can be quite the process though from what I have researched.

Just saw this and not true. it depends on the dog. You could do a test, and all dogs could like it. you could also do a test and only half like it. Both my golden retriever and Corgi didnt like it. They are super well behaved and never destroyed anything. Crates are good for people who have full time jobs and dont have the luxury to take time and train a dog right. in this circumstance why are you getting a dog. Dogs are wild animals and they protect themselves by finding things to shelter in. They are all basically a wolf. You statement includes all, while mine is it depends. Kinda close minded even though there has been proof on both ends. Dogs feel more secure being around a thing they trust so another dog or human.

2 of my dogs go into their crates all the time and they like sleeping there. It is like a den. My 3rd dog sleeps in bed with my son and doesn't use a crate.
My dog sleeps with me because to me dogs are more deserving than most humans, humans are nasty horrible creatures, an obomination, and a pleague to the very planet we inhabit,yes that includes me, so if I get comfort and I don't even deserve it , than best believe I'm gonna make sure my dog is more comfortable than I am.
My Little Chihuahua lives in a crate but it's a big crate for a big dog and there's no door but she loves it I think it makes her feel safe other than that she's usually out all day but at night time that's where she likes to go🐶🐶😃😃

Donna Gerhart for me personally if the dog has horible seperation anxiety and will tear things up when your gone I would put him in a crate to keep him safe so he doesn't drop anything on him. Otherwise I don't think a crate is ever needed
If the dog has a severe case of separation anxiety, they can hurt themselves trying to dig or chew their way out of the crate. Broken teeth and/or toenails are common. Our current dog is somewhere between 5-8 years old. We adopted him last year and he came with some serious medical and psychological issues. One of which was separation anxiety. It took me about 9 months of working with him to reduce his anxiety. (He was abandoned at least twice before we adopted him.)

Too bad we can no longer see how many dislikes are in this video. But I think the ratio of views to likes speaks for itself. Crate training is not cruel if you do it properly and never use it as punishment. It's a tried and true way of house training a puppy. Once the puppy grows up into a well-adjusted adult, they can be trusted to stay in the house alone with no crate. As for PETA, I would not take advice from a group that doesn't even believe in putting pet birds in a cage.
Why have a dog if you are going to lock them up away from you. Go volunteer at a shelter give the animals there some of you're spare time. Cause you apparently don't want a full time dog.
Crating comes in handing and should be used as a den and to protect your dog. Our dogs have their own room, they have learned to sleep anywhere, they have a bedtime and sometimes we do have to crate them for a bit due to medical issues. They do not stay there and have a daily life and jobs. Our dogs are service dogs so we get the cage sizeable and we never had an issue, we work with the dog too. Our senior dogs even learned how to deal with it. I have my own bed and my own room so the dogs have the same. They enjoy it and they enjoy the couch and their beds that lay around upstairs. Our dogs are spoiled even with having a crate/den. Thanks for sharing.
So, we can raise our children in crates otherwise known as cribs and we confine them in playpens, highchairs and car safety seats. We also continue this practice for many years but the dog, especially a young dog should be given more freedom without supervision than a more intelligent child? Failure in housebreaking, destructive chewing and many other behaviors while unsupervised are the driving factors of so many dogs ending up in shelters. If dog is being given adequate social time, exercise and training the time in the crate is irrelevant. Dogs that don't like crates have owners that don't know how to properly teach it.
This is a very accurate comment. Crating is invaluable for keeping puppies safe when unsupervised. Sure damaged furniture etc is a problem for the owner, but ingesting something they shouldn’t can be lethal. Dogs prefer small, safe places. It’s the reason why thundershirts are effective for creating security for dogs from sounds. Crates offer similar security when used correctly. A dog being locked up for 10+ hours in a crate is just as bad as a dog being alone in their house for the same period of time. Irresponsible owners are abound. The tool is not the issue, it’s always how it’s used.
My dogs fucked my house up bigtime, but when it came to crating them or fucking up my house, I chose the latter, animals need to move around to stay healthy, no way in a million years would crate my animal.

kt330 mac You can get your Dog registered as a service dog, or emotional support, that way you can have them right there on the plane with you. You can go online to do this. I have heard to many horror stories of Dogs in crates on planes. You can go to USA service dog, or there are a few other places, you will get what looks like a drivers license for your dog. Make sure you get the service dog vest when taking anywhere, they cannot deny you anywhere with your dog

Crate training is best for the people not for the dogs. I have two fully grown Alaskan malamutes. I did not crate train them. I was mindful and had gates and areas that were safe. Mostly I was mindful to cover up things I didn't want to get chewed on. This stage was only a few months really. They are independent well-behaved and happy dogs that get to be where they want. They never have accidents and it's not an issue. I personally believe that crate training in a sense breaks the will of the puppy and takes away a zest and independent polite confidence in the adult dog. Frankly I only have it sample size of seven (4 created 3 not) but that's pretty large for any given dog owner.
I just don’t agree with the crate, my dog hates it. I think I messed up on the crate training and I can’t deal with the whining, barking and destructiveness.
i sometimes crate my dog when she wont pee on the pad because shes a chihuahua pitbull mix and she is very stubborn when i put her in the crate she whines a bit so when shes quiet i give her treats and i never leave her in the crate when i am gone i sometimes put her in her crate only at night and at 6 or 7 in the morning my grandpa wakes up for work and lets her out so she can do her business outside
I have 10 dogs. 6 large dogs and 4 little dogs. I have 6 large crates and 2 small crates. My dogs sleep in their crates. I'm home all day every day so they only sleep in their crates. However, if I have to go into El Paso to shop I crate my dogs. I have a pack of dogs. No matter how much a person loves their dogs dogs are different when their humans aren't around. They just are. All of my big dogs are rescues. All were picked up as strays or seized and all were abused and neglected. Their crate is their place of solace. No matter what happens or who's in trouble that crate is home base. They don't get yelled at or disciplined while in crate. That's their safe space. I've had way too many people call me and tell me their furball got into this or that while they were out and what should they do? Uh, get a crate and keep your dog safe?
I suppose if your individual dog has issues where they can't be left alone and free to roam, it would be useful and beneficial. However my dog has absolutely no need to be crated, whether im home or not. Nor do i have the desire to crate her. I have one and use it every once in a while when needed. She does sometimes go in there to nap if she sees fit. My cat is actually the one that ñikes to sleep in there more often. Ive never used crates for my dogs in the past. If i absolutely need to confine their movements i would just tether them and knowing they are tethered, they would stay put, no trying to pull or break free. But every dog is different, every person is different and every home situation is different.
Lol I have an Australian Shepherd and I'm a 12 year old and I went into the crate and was quite comfortable. It has a divider about halfway. I love it. Lol.
My dog goes in the crate on his own when it's time to go to bed at night. He knows nighttime is the only time he will be in there and he gets a small treat. He's blind, and although I'd love to allow him in the bed, I'm not comfortable that he won't fall out of the bed during the night, so it's also for his safety.

Depends on the breed my big dogs don't like kennels. On other hand chihuahuas like their kennels to be covered from all directions. I leave the kennel doors open, so they have freedom. Also chihuahuas don't like big crates. They prefer to be snug like a bug. My shepherd mix has taken over the bathroom, making it her own room.

I use a crate for my very tiny puppy but never with a door locked.. Its a great place for her when the bigger dog wants to play and she doesn't.. It becomes her safe spot..
They are giving people a bad name. I give an encouragement “kennel up” and my lab mix goes in no problem. But I am medically retired, so most of the time he is out with family. And usually if I do put him in, he knows it is for a short time like taking my son to school or errands. We leave the door open all day and it’s in the same spot always. Sometimes he goes in to it on his own to take a nap. Now I am puppy sitting for my son’s dog. My son thought what I said was cage up. I hate the word cage. It sounds like you will be on display, so that went and he is adjusting to kennel up and I make it positive when I come back.
I think it's a must for puppies. The way I looked at it, was either I spend $1,000 on new carpet from accidents, or teach him to sleep in his crate until he's fully potty trained. My gsp also has insane separation anxiety so to avoid him hurting himself he's in the crate for short periods of time. That grand could either be put towards carpet OR lake, and camping trips with my pup. I don't agree with putting them in there all night and not giving any potty breaks, that should be given until they're old enough to hold it all night by then I think they should be able to have the door open since they're not having accidents anymore. Also if you're okay with your puppy pooping and peeing all over your floors you have got to be the most unsanitary person. You can get things out of carpet, but padding? Yeah not going to happen no matter how much you pay to clean and sanitize it's going to come up🤢

Most dogs find their own "Den" in the home,usually under a bed. One of my deceased Collies use to take one of the rugs in with her lol . She was happy. Only use I have for cages is during travelling by car for safety .
We rescued a Bichon Frise who had been kept in a cage for her first 2 years of life. She has no idea how to play, deal with other animals and it took a year before she would allow my husband to touch her. When we first got her we purchased a crate and used it exactly twice. She would howl, cry, defecate, pee and hurt herself - it was pure HELL for her to be in one so we never used it again. We have had her for nearly 7 years at the end of May and she is one of our greatest joys. She still has no playing desire but she makes a great "couch potato" for me ! So glad you shared your story. I adopted a Chihuahua mix from the local shelter a year ago. He was thought to be about 2 yrs then. Sometimes you don't know what they've endured. He has never liked to play with toys and only is interested in licking, softly biting my hands/fingers and just "wrestling" with me! I've always thought it so strange since other dogs I've had always enjoyed toys. He is still leery of men but is doing better if he sees I'm ok with the person. The only time he was in a kennel was when I first brought him home from the shelter & I was away at work. However, the kennel disappeared quickly. Scooter now sleeps with me every night. Lots of TLC for my "funny little fella". :-) Very happy to hear your dear Curly Girl is doing so well and is such a joy to you and your husband! :-)

@seaashellxx She was scared to death of small spaces since her whole first 2 years of life was spent in a cage. Also, we had to put her to sleep in Feb.of 2019, kidney disease.

Never crated any of our dogs. The first 2 preferred to sleep in bed with us, our current and 3rd dog prefers to sleep either on the floor at the foot of the bed or on his big pillow in the living room. He starts out on the bed to "warm it up" for me. :) He's a very large dog and we both do not fit on the bed at the same time.
What about before potty trained? A puppy?
We adopted our current dog as an adult but our first 2 were puppies when we got them. For the first year they were contained in a separate room, usually the kitchen with baby gates at the doorways, even after potty training until they were past the chewing on everything stage and could be trusted to roam around the house.

ADVICE!! I just moved and have found that my next door neighbor keeps her rather large dog in a crate. I can hear this dog whining in every room and my cats sense this animal is in distress. What do I do? I can’t even sleep in my bedroom because I feel awful for this dog. Why have a dog?
I have never created a dog of mine, because I just can't do it. My baby sleeps with me, if I'm not home she sleeps with my son, if I have had to go away we go to dig friendly motels or she sleeps at her foster mother's house, and as she is well travelled well behaved and cute everybody loves her.

Did you not watch the video? He said when used APPROPRIATELY/CORRECTLY it’s fine. He never said it’s abusive he said when people abuse the crate and lock the dog in it all day it gives the dog health and behavioral issues which is true otherwise it can be a safe and beneficial when used correctly for short periods of time.
Never had the need or desire to put my dogs in a cage, you can call it a crate, but it’s a cage. They are for human convenience not for the dog. Having had dogs my whole life this is another Americanism that has become what people consider necessary, without doing research as to why not to!
I’m American and I despise crating dogs. Basically defeats one of the purposes of a dog too, how’s he going to protect my family in a cage. I wouldn’t want to be locked in a cage for 5 hours or more

Don't be so dramatic. Is it a perfect solution? Nothing in life is. The vast majority of these animals live pampered lives with the best veterinary care money can buy and love and attention the vast majority of the time. Most people have these things that they have to do to keep food coming in and the lights on, they're called jobs. 😂

I never had crates/cages for any of my dogs that i had. If i get a very young puppy i often just puppy proof one of the bedrooms the best i can with food, water, puppypads on floor, and keeping anything that may be dangerous for puppy out of reach. At worse they have accident and maybe chew some furniture or something else and all you have to do is correct hem on that behaviors'. It takes time and patients but always works. Luckily these days its easier as their always someone at the house and the puppies whenever we get one have an older dog they often learn from. Recently got a 5 month year old husky, which is older than what we normally get but she doing very well and learns fast from watching our lab/shepherd mix that we have.
Sorry for anyone wanting to crate their pups, I find the dog reacting way better to some safe space in the living. Worked wonders from day 1 (his pen made him super super hysterical), the living room is just wonderful.

We adopted a 2yo chi-jack russel mix who was already crate trained. He had such separation anxiety and was generally a naughty guy when left alone, even for short periods of time, that we found it was better to have him in the crate. Even at bedtime, he's in the crate. If he's there and we forget to close the door, he gets anxious and whiny. He doesn't protest going in at all and it generally calms him down to be there.

Woah, woah, woah! if it's unfit to the point where it causes deformity and stress, it's definitely cage. A crate is a place where your dog can go to feel safer, it should always be big enough so that they can turn around and move effortlessly, and should never be used as a punishment, always a safe spot to snuggle in.
It should not be used if it's not needed, and i apologize that some people actually do this, and treat a crate as a cage, gives a bad rap for all of us, we do not support caging your dog!
My dog loves her house (crate). As a matter of fact when she had two ACL surgeries she needed to stay crated for two weeks each time. I had to buy a very large crate to make sure she was comfortable. I had every intention of taking it down and just having her bed out. But that did not fly, she would continually stare at the place I kept her crate and wake up during the night pacing and looking for her house. So here we are her huge crate has to be out taking a lot of space that I could use but she loves it and chooses to stay in it day and night as she pleases. The door is open all the time. She was crate trained as a puppy so this is her normal and she prefers it. But we use it the right way we never punish her in her crate that's the key.🙃
Having the door open is completely different. I 100% agree that a small space is great for a dog to have as an option. The idea of closing the cage and leaving them in there at night is so wrong.

Cribs are made so your child doesn‘t fall out of the bed and hurts himself in the night. Also babys are not allowed to crawl out of the bed in the night because it can hurt himself while falling down the stairs. However a crate isn‘t made to protect your dog from hurting himself😂 it‘s made because you crazy Americans can‘t train your dog to not disturb Furniture or something. I had a dog for 12 years and i never used a crate, he never chewed on furniture or anything like that.

I don't believe in crates. I have trained our dog for a crate, but only for an emergency use, such as during a hurricane and we need to find safe shelter. Our dog prefers our company - We are his safe place. But he doesn't get into anything when we are gone!
Crates keep them out of trouble when they are puppies and if they are being supervised they should have a leash on them at all times. Their should be no freedom in early stages

I am getting an adult rescue dog. The shelter said he is crate trained and often stays in his crate while the other dogs roam free. I personally would prefer having him sleep in my bed (my son wants him in his bed). I also don't want to force him to do something he is not comfortable with. So I am buying a crate as an OPTION not a requirement. I'll leave the door open and if he wants he can spend his time in there. As a family we would prefer him to roam freely around the house. The bathroom and the basement are the only off limit rooms and they both have doors that will remain closed. I hope he chooses to co-sleep. I don't think you should force dogs who are use to crates to integrate the way you want when you want. When they build that bond and trust in you, maybe they will organically choose you over the crate. I still prefer to keep their safe space as an OPTION, even if that safe space is a crate
Thank you; never used a crate for any of my dogs, and I'm getting a new puppy because I've been lonely since my last furbaby died of old age but as I look around at videos about getting a dog everyone talks about crates and crate training. I can see their uses, it's probably better to crate train a dog than to let it run free when you're not home and risk it getting into something dangerous, or if you adopt a territorial/aggressive animal and you need to contain him while visitors are around, etc. And some dogs like their "houses"-- my grandpa's dog had a dog house (no door) in the back yard and that dog loved hanging out in his little den. The cat even would go in there and curl up with him and they'd take naps together.
Glad to hear from someone though that it's not such a big necessity, because I probably won't use one unless there is some absolute need.
I had to crate my Alaskan Malamute dog over a 13 hr. period on a plane. I purchased it big enough that I would consider to take a long flight in it or even camp in it. Never again did she use it choosing her own dens from within the structures our home provided like underneath desks or under the deck where for additional safety as she did like to wander she was placed on a line. Outdoor kennels are a better idea if you are leaving them for long periods of time with an internal shelter form the weather. As long as a dog is not considered as an accessory and they are treated well whatever works is a choice we all make as individuals so thanks Dr. Jones for remaining on the fence lol
My dog sleeps with me most of the time but she does have a kennel and the door stays open for him and sometimes he goes in during the night. Door is never locked.
Except if I leave, he has anxiety issues of wanting to tear up things if I am gone. But it is funny, when he sees me pick up my purse and get my keys he goes right in the crate. Otherwise he has free rein of the house.

This is exactly how we use the crate. Only for short periods of time and when we are not home. He knows when we are leaving and goes in on his own and sometimes sleeps in his kennel (with the door open). Also, the kennel is large enough for him to move around in and stand comfortably.
the same with my dogs they often will go in there when we are home, usually i if things are hectic like cleaning moving furniture i call their crate their " home " and when i leave they ether go in their crate by themself or i say ok go in your home and they happily go :) i think people that have used crates as punishments will result in a dog that hates crates
I think it just depends on how you train your dog to view the crate I trained my dog to think of the crate as a safe place she has anxiety so she tears up things when I'm not home or she'll cry really loud at the door but if I have crate out she will Calm lay down and sleep in there if I have guests over and she walks in her crate I tell my guests not to bother her because that's just her place where she goes if she doesn't want to be bothered
@munajedski There's no need for a crate period what so ever. Those that do have crates you know are the ones who lock their dogs in there for hours at a time! Crates/cages are abuse period theres no resonable excuse to have one at all. If its to keep the dogs from damaging furniture while you're away thats not the dogs fault but the owner from properly training them.

When deciding what I want for my dog I always ask myself if I would like to be treated in the same manner. So would I like to be crated ? NO is the reply! I have had a Cockerpoo puppy for 5 days now. 10.5 weeks old, no crates.
He sleeps through the night in the bedroom, almost completely toilet trained and is already responding to his name, no, okay, good boy etc.
It may take a little more work than a crate but he absolutely doesn't want to be locked up, he wants to be touching me in some way.

He was a year old and I'd say within 3 weeks he was house broken (on my bed napping as I type this). Ten weeks is young. Like a child, their bodies need to be mature enough. He will have accidents. I hope you've scouted your home and removed any hazards. He may eat cleaners, electric cords, shoes (puppies teethe). One of my dogs chewed up wood work, another kept pulling down my blinds. Anxiety issues! It's like raising a child. 8-4 is a long day for a puppy. Do you have anyone that could hang with the puppy during the day?
To the point, you will need to confine him in some way. For his safety. Have you considered a child proof gate? Even for an adult dog 8 hours is a long time.
We never crated our first dog and he turned out just fine, but I see it as a very good training tool if done correctly and humanely. As long as the dog enjoys it or doesn't mind it, I'm fine with it.
When would be a good time for you to be put in a cage humanely? Calling a prison cell something that needs training just shows how stupid humans are. If Anyone puts an animal in a cage anytime they go out just so the dog doesnt wreck anything should not have a dog. A dog is a pet. That means its part of your family. Just because humans are too stupid to realize that you cant put your kids in a small cage all day any more than you can a dog. People that do not have the ability to see things from the point of view of being the one in the cage then you are not smart enough to own a dog. Just because there are so called experts and people you assume are smarter than you that tell you its ok and even call it training does not ever make it right. Use your fucking head. After our 17 year old, (NEVER caged) darling left us I slowly decided it was time for a new pup. As I started doing my research I was shocked by the proliferation of cage training. I’ve gotten into arguments with strangers who have called me all sorts of names including “cruel and stupid” for not caging. So I’m getting a puppy soon, and I personally don’t like crates nor do I want to use a crate but everywhere I look they all say crate train your puppy..
After watching the video and the comments you’ve/they’ve just assured me that I don’t need to crate train a dog.
I’ve had two dogs. One for 12 years since she was a puppy, and another one that we adopted that we had for ten years. We didn’t use a crate for either dog and both were good. The puppy only once chewed on something and that was it. We would leave her home for about four hours when my mom went to work and I went to school and she roamed them house. Later on we moved to a house with a yard and my mom worked at home and so she never had to be home alone for the most part. I seriously cannot imagine keeping her in a crate. She slept in my bed ever since she was a puppy. The first night we got her she was whimpering and so my mom put her in my bed with me. And since then I was her safe space. She also had a blanket under my bed so if she wanted to she could sleep there as well. She usually did that during the day. My second dog was giant so having him in a bed with me wouldn’t have been comfortable at all. Whenever I would come home from college or holidays after I moved out he would just sleep near my bed. He also had his own dog bed. He and my cat would snuggle there. Or he’d just lay down anywhere he felt comfortable. Before we had him he was abused and then given away three times so he had major anxiety at the beginning. But then he got used to our family and felt very safe. I honestly don’t think crates are at all necessary. This whole “den” theory just doesn’t sit well with me because cages are not the same as dens. And wild dogs come and go as they please. Keeping them in a kennel the whole night or during the whole work day is not the same as a wild dog or a wolf going into a den. And frankly it’s a new trend. When I got my puppy back in the 90’s this wasn’t a thing really. Literally millions of people around the world have had dogs and don’t use crates and kennels and their dogs are totally fine and don’t damage their homes.
I have a crate that I used for a transport when moving and the puppy likes to go in it still. I leave the door open always. It's sad :( to see a caged animal.
Crate training didn’t seem like a good idea for me. I still work and that would mean hours of sitting in a metal create so I babygated the laundry room and I have pee pads on side and toys and his bed in the other. Seems to work but potty training outside is still it’s own issue
My dogs use the pee pads all the time, when I don't walk them, they want to pee on them after they smell their pee or another dogs pee it's nature for them
I have a crate for my older dog. Pit bull mix. It’s a way for him to escape the constant, irritating play from my deaf Aussie pup. He can go in there, chew on his Kong, and not have to deal with puppy antics. It’s in the living room, where people are the most, and it doesn’t have walls (just thin cage bars) so he doesn’t feel like he’s being “put away”
Believe what you want. Most pit bull breeds need to be crate trained for anxiety and discipline. It’s not like there locked in a cage all day. The only time we use the crate with the dog is when it’s time for them to go to bed. It’s not inhuman and it’s healthy for most dogs. Though some dogs like mutts, golden retrievers and other dogs do not necessarily need to be crate trained.

My one dog's "crates" are under the coffee table or under my bed; the other dog likes to be out in the open, whether indoors or out. In my opinion, crates are for shipping, and the day my puppies were flown to me was the only day they've ever been crated and ever will be. As "destructive puppies", all that was required to stop damage to furnishings etc. was to tell them "no", give them a bone and - when leaving them home alone - making sure they had an abundance of bones or other healthy teethers :)

Our puppy sleeps next to us, why not? People are like ”I want a dog but not in the house”... Our bedroom, hallway and living are safe so he can walk around in these areas during the night (in the living when going to work), and he's so happy. Always sleeps in the bedroom. We tried a crate and playpen, he got super super hysterical, when we left him in the living he immediately manage 4h+4h alone where I ”came” home during lunch and evening.
My first dog loved her crate but she was destructive when the crate was left open, shoes walls cords ect... we took her crate away from her and she just stopped, she was no longer destructive at all, although she was looking for her crate in the beginning it was not good for her. Our next dog we did no crate and he's been out since a puppy and never chewed anything but his toys. So I understand the crate but I do suggest trying it without one from my experience. But I know it won't be for everyone. The dogs both stay out 100% of the time no crates and no worries.

My dog slept in his crate. It was where his bed was and during the day he was free to roam. He went there on his own when he didn't want to be bothered with people...never had a problem
My first 2 puppies I didn’t crate my walls and furniture got chewed up everyday. My girl had puppies and I keep one...her daughter...I crate her while I’m not home. She has a big crate and she goes in no problem. When I’m home I don’t crate for any reason unless the pup wants to be in there.

Never had a dog but I would never train my dog to stay in a crate. If anything I’ll have a big crate open with comfy pillows just so my baby has their own space, but I wouldn’t lock up my dog.

Not all dogs, my dog will go into his crate on his own, and so will a lot of dogs.
Believe it or not most dogs prefer sleeping in crates. Why? Because they feel safer so they sleep better, regardless of indoor or outdoor.
If you don't believe me try sleeping outside with no shelter. I'm 99.9% sure you won't get a good night sleep because you'll have one eye open the whole time, or you will be jumping at every sound. Dogs are no different.
Studies have shown even stray/feral dogs will willingly sleep in a doghouse/crate like structure on their own.

Crates aren’t bad. When used correctly, they are amazing tools. I have nine dogs. At feeding time, it is so much easier to feed some of them in crates. I feed twice daily, and not only does feeding certain dogs in crates reduce anxiety, as they don’t all eat at the same pace, and some will stand and stare, causing others to want to eat faster, but it gives them a break. A timeout, if you will. I have multiple that want to play (hard) right after a meal. When crated, those dogs eat slower, and immediately nap after their meal. Here, at my house, we don’t play directly before, or directly after a meal. I work from home, and five days a week, I have a nanny for the dogs. Since my days revolve around my dogs, and they get more than adequate physical and mental stimulation every day, I don’t feel bad that I have several that are crated overnight. Crates, when used properly, are amazing tools. Crating is exactly how I potty trained all of mine so quickly.
I have two dogs a pitbull boxer mix and a small mix pomeranian they both prefer the crate they sleep in there together I have the largest one wire and very open not the travel one with lots of baby blankets they have had for years a big pillow bed and they love it. I do lock them in when I have to work or at bed time because they sleep better... otherwise they pace at night and chase the cats now they "go to bed" on their own when they are tired and get let out first thing in the morning.. I only work a few hours three to four days a week and they just sleep they are older so they don't mind it and they seem less anxious then before I got them their crate I have a smaller one for my little guy but he will only sleep with his big sister lol I think if it's done right as a part of training its beneficial to them because they are den/ pack animals they love each other and their little den it isn't a punishment but it's their area their bed and helpful... they never cry or freak out so I guess if it's over used I can see it being an issue..
My 2 German Shepherds have been crate trained since they were 6 weeks old (now 1.5 yrs). I have been trying unsuccessfully to get them to sleep in the bedroom on plush dog beds with little success. Typically one of them will wake me up in the middle of the night fauning a need to go potty when they really just want to go in their house (we call their crates houses). I'm honestly really sad that they don't want to sleep with us, but I am grateful that we never have to force them in their crates.

I have 2 dogs, 1 is an American bulldog and he's never had to be crated. The 2nd is a French bulldog mix. She is crated only when I leave. And both of them are always crated in the back of my truck. I taught both my dogs that their crate is for safety. We get busy in our house and it gets loud with all the kids so my dogs find refuge in theirs ...
It’s crate TRAINING and what they get right is that you should NEVER crate a dog at nighttime. You should also not confine your dog to a certain room or floor of your house. Train them not to go in the bedroom, living room etc. It’s gross, it’s wrong to confine a dog… if you fail to train your dog to not go into particular rooms or to do particular things that’s a training failure and should not be compensated for by putting them in a tiny cage. Work harder, it’s difficult but not impossible to train your dog not to chew on your couch.

Recently got a springer spaniel puppy. Currently 11 weeks old. I'm the only person with a puppy from the litter who hasn't crate trained.
He's too intelligent and hates being confined. It has been more effort, though crating is mostly about convenience for the owner.
I used baby gates to keep him off the stairs and just puppy-proofed the house.
I never ever believed in crate training but we have a puppy not a adult dog. Should I put a crate in his mudroom area and give him the option or just not buy one?? Everyone says start them young for training purposes. With our last dog we adopted him at 1 years old and never bought a crate.
I think it depends a lot on the dog honestly. I had a dog that had extreme anxiety and couldn’t be crated. My dog growing up wasn’t crate-trained either but she generally did well with housebreaking and integrating into family life. There are other methods but I do think crating is at least worth trying if you have a puppy. It can be quite the process though from what I have researched.

Just saw this and not true. it depends on the dog. You could do a test, and all dogs could like it. you could also do a test and only half like it. Both my golden retriever and Corgi didnt like it. They are super well behaved and never destroyed anything. Crates are good for people who have full time jobs and dont have the luxury to take time and train a dog right. in this circumstance why are you getting a dog. Dogs are wild animals and they protect themselves by finding things to shelter in. They are all basically a wolf. You statement includes all, while mine is it depends. Kinda close minded even though there has been proof on both ends. Dogs feel more secure being around a thing they trust so another dog or human.

2 of my dogs go into their crates all the time and they like sleeping there. It is like a den. My 3rd dog sleeps in bed with my son and doesn't use a crate.

My dog sleeps with me because to me dogs are more deserving than most humans, humans are nasty horrible creatures, an obomination, and a pleague to the very planet we inhabit,yes that includes me, so if I get comfort and I don't even deserve it , than best believe I'm gonna make sure my dog is more comfortable than I am.
My Little Chihuahua lives in a crate but it's a big crate for a big dog and there's no door but she loves it I think it makes her feel safe other than that she's usually out all day but at night time that's where she likes to go🐶🐶😃😃

Donna Gerhart for me personally if the dog has horible seperation anxiety and will tear things up when your gone I would put him in a crate to keep him safe so he doesn't drop anything on him. Otherwise I don't think a crate is ever needed

If the dog has a severe case of separation anxiety, they can hurt themselves trying to dig or chew their way out of the crate. Broken teeth and/or toenails are common. Our current dog is somewhere between 5-8 years old. We adopted him last year and he came with some serious medical and psychological issues. One of which was separation anxiety. It took me about 9 months of working with him to reduce his anxiety. (He was abandoned at least twice before we adopted him.)

Crate training is not cruel if you do it properly and never use it as punishment. It's a tried and true way of house training a puppy. Once the puppy grows up into a well-adjusted adult, they can be trusted to stay in the house alone with no crate.
As for PETA, I would not take advice from a group that doesn't even believe in putting pet birds in a cage.
Why have a dog if you are going to lock them up away from you. Go volunteer at a shelter give the animals there some of you're spare time. Cause you apparently don't want a full time dog.

Crating comes in handing and should be used as a den and to protect your dog. Our dogs have their own room, they have learned to sleep anywhere, they have a bedtime and sometimes we do have to crate them for a bit due to medical issues. They do not stay there and have a daily life and jobs. Our dogs are service dogs so we get the cage sizeable and we never had an issue, we work with the dog too. Our senior dogs even learned how to deal with it. I have my own bed and my own room so the dogs have the same. They enjoy it and they enjoy the couch and their beds that lay around upstairs. Our dogs are spoiled even with having a crate/den. Thanks for sharing.

So, we can raise our children in crates otherwise known as cribs and we confine them in playpens, highchairs and car safety seats. We also continue this practice for many years but the dog, especially a young dog should be given more freedom without supervision than a more intelligent child? Failure in housebreaking, destructive chewing and many other behaviors while unsupervised are the driving factors of so many dogs ending up in shelters. If dog is being given adequate social time, exercise and training the time in the crate is irrelevant. Dogs that don't like crates have owners that don't know how to properly teach it.
This is a very accurate comment. Crating is invaluable for keeping puppies safe when unsupervised. Sure damaged furniture etc is a problem for the owner, but ingesting something they shouldn’t can be lethal. Dogs prefer small, safe places. It’s the reason why thundershirts are effective for creating security for dogs from sounds. Crates offer similar security when used correctly. A dog being locked up for 10+ hours in a crate is just as bad as a dog being alone in their house for the same period of time. Irresponsible owners are abound. The tool is not the issue, it’s always how it’s used.
My dogs fucked my house up bigtime, but when it came to crating them or fucking up my house, I chose the latter, animals need to move around to stay healthy, no way in a million years would crate my animal.

kt330 mac You can get your Dog registered as a service dog, or emotional support, that way you can have them right there on the plane with you. You can go online to do this. I have heard to many horror stories of Dogs in crates on planes. You can go to USA service dog, or there are a few other places, you will get what looks like a drivers license for your dog. Make sure you get the service dog vest when taking anywhere, they cannot deny you anywhere with your dog
The only two dogs I ever kept in crates both ran away, I never kept any in crates ever again, and I’ve never had any run away.

Crate training is best for the people not for the dogs. I have two fully grown Alaskan malamutes. I did not crate train them. I was mindful and had gates and areas that were safe. Mostly I was mindful to cover up things I didn't want to get chewed on. This stage was only a few months really. They are independent well-behaved and happy dogs that get to be where they want. They never have accidents and it's not an issue. I personally believe that crate training in a sense breaks the will of the puppy and takes away a zest and independent polite confidence in the adult dog. Frankly I only have it sample size of seven (4 created 3 not) but that's pretty large for any given dog owner.
My dogs have a tent bed that they love. I am not a fan of the cage.

i sometimes crate my dog when she wont pee on the pad because shes a chihuahua pitbull mix and she is very stubborn when i put her in the crate she whines a bit so when shes quiet i give her treats and i never leave her in the crate when i am gone i sometimes put her in her crate only at night and at 6 or 7 in the morning my grandpa wakes up for work and lets her out so she can do her business outside

I have 10 dogs. 6 large dogs and 4 little dogs. I have 6 large crates and 2 small crates. My dogs sleep in their crates. I'm home all day every day so they only sleep in their crates. However, if I have to go into El Paso to shop I crate my dogs. I have a pack of dogs. No matter how much a person loves their dogs dogs are different when their humans aren't around. They just are. All of my big dogs are rescues. All were picked up as strays or seized and all were abused and neglected. Their crate is their place of solace. No matter what happens or who's in trouble that crate is home base. They don't get yelled at or disciplined while in crate. That's their safe space. I've had way too many people call me and tell me their furball got into this or that while they were out and what should they do? Uh, get a crate and keep your dog safe?

I suppose if your individual dog has issues where they can't be left alone and free to roam, it would be useful and beneficial. However my dog has absolutely no need to be crated, whether im home or not. Nor do i have the desire to crate her. I have one and use it every once in a while when needed. She does sometimes go in there to nap if she sees fit. My cat is actually the one that ñikes to sleep in there more often. Ive never used crates for my dogs in the past. If i absolutely need to confine their movements i would just tether them and knowing they are tethered, they would stay put, no trying to pull or break free. But every dog is different, every person is different and every home situation is different.

My dog goes in the crate on his own when it's time to go to bed at night. He knows nighttime is the only time he will be in there and he gets a small treat. He's blind, and although I'd love to allow him in the bed, I'm not comfortable that he won't fall out of the bed during the night, so it's also for his safety.

I thought of a crate and watched lots of videos bad and good and so I thought a gate for the laundry room would be best cause he's already claimed that as a safe space and I'm not one for the crate

Depends on the breed my big dogs don't like kennels. On other hand chihuahuas like their kennels to be covered from all directions. I leave the kennel doors open, so they have freedom. Also chihuahuas don't like big crates. They prefer to be snug like a bug. My shepherd mix has taken over the bathroom, making it her own room.
I don’t crate my dog, but I’m home all day every day and also sleep with my dog in my bed, but my daughters husky 5 months old and always into thing she shouldn’t be gets crated when we are not home.
I use a crate for my very tiny puppy but never with a door locked.. Its a great place for her when the bigger dog wants to play and she doesn't.. It becomes her safe spot..

They are giving people a bad name. I give an encouragement “kennel up” and my lab mix goes in no problem. But I am medically retired, so most of the time he is out with family. And usually if I do put him in, he knows it is for a short time like taking my son to school or errands.
We leave the door open all day and it’s in the same spot always. Sometimes he goes in to it on his own to take a nap.
Now I am puppy sitting for my son’s dog. My son thought what I said was cage up. I hate the word cage. It sounds like you will be on display, so that went and he is adjusting to kennel up and I make it positive when I come back.

I think it's a must for puppies. The way I looked at it, was either I spend $1,000 on new carpet from accidents, or teach him to sleep in his crate until he's fully potty trained. My gsp also has insane separation anxiety so to avoid him hurting himself he's in the crate for short periods of time. That grand could either be put towards carpet OR lake, and camping trips with my pup. I don't agree with putting them in there all night and not giving any potty breaks, that should be given until they're old enough to hold it all night by then I think they should be able to have the door open since they're not having accidents anymore. Also if you're okay with your puppy pooping and peeing all over your floors you have got to be the most unsanitary person. You can get things out of carpet, but padding? Yeah not going to happen no matter how much you pay to clean and sanitize it's going to come up🤢
