I've shown this video to my puppy like six times and he isn't doing any of this stuff. About how many times will he have to watch this before he starts understanding how to behave?
Update method I found the best was the constant opening and closing of the door without talking or acknowledging the puppy puppy tries to walk out you close it gently in to his/hers face until settled and laying down close crate a put sheet over the top
Took our 8wk puppy home a week ago. He wasn't willfully going into his crate, but would stay in if he was sleepy and I carried him in. However the evenings have been a different story! He would fall asleep, but if I even tried to leave the room he would wake up and cry, bark, whine and whatever else came out of his mouth. I'd take him to potty or lay next to the crate. Then sneak away again and he would cry again. Finally watched this video. Covered the entire crate except the side facing the wall. He whined a tiny bit, but has now been asleep for almost 2hours. Thank you for this video! I'm also doing the high value treat training!
Maybe I just got lucky. I just lost my 5th dog and none of my puppies ever been in a crate. At night, they slept in their basket next to my bed. The first night if they occasional cried I stroked them for a minutes and they went back to sleep. All they needed was reassurance. My new puppy, no 5th is due to arrive next week.
Guys, this video is magic! I had made the mistake of putting my puppy's crate in the bedroom with me for 10 days after he arrived. The only thing I managed to accomplish was to have him sit down quietly for me to open the door. I tried to put him in the living room twice and it was hell. Then I watched this video and did everything in it. Literally everything. And it worked like a charm. My pup goes into night for his naps and the night without any complaints and stays there for hours at a time without so much as a peep. He will only cry when he really has to go potty. So guys - DO. NOT. HALF. ASS. IT. Do it all, it works!
So you reccomend to out the crate in the living room right after we bring the puppy home? I just wonder how to to do all that. If the crate stays open during the night the first night etc. So many question :)

I have been sleeping with both earbuds in and the ear protection I wear at the gun range over it... this goes to show how much fun I'm having with my now 8 week old
Thank God my 8 week old is not whining at all on night 2 and going in there willingly. I'm playing the heartbeat noise over my alexa and put small other stuffed dog in. She's feeling at home. As a 57 year old with grown kids, I forgot how hard these lil babies are.
It's been 18 years since I've had to train a puppy. We just brought home a 2 month old bassett. I don't want to reinforce bad habits. I was going to start training tomorrow, but I looks like there's no better time than the present! Thanks for the tips!
I'm with you. 11 week old Standard Poodle. First 'puppy' I've ever had and I'm 68. Cats are much easier. Loonnnngggg night last night. I can only hope tonight will be better. Keeping my fingers crossed.
5mo old Catahoula here. Such a sweety but I wanna do this right. I love your videos and I’m already signed up for your puppy workshop. Thank you so much for being you!
I’ve had my puppy 1 week now, and I’ve learnt to give last meal n water by 7. I will definitely train my pup to go in crate during the day and cover the crate at nights.
Full time crate dog? Tell me more, is this like a dog aquarium? I have an extra air pump from my fish aquarium so I wouldn't need to buy much more to make a dog aquarium.
It’s been almost 19 years and just rescued a 6 month puppy. Never had to crate train our other pups. They learned from each other. This puppy is the only one right now and needs to be crated. He will be a big boy. I have seen other crate training videos but this one has been more informative and training in a loving way.
So glad you liked it! Yes, we suggest crate training in a positive way so the puppy associates it with good things. You have to go at the puppy's pace but you'll get there!
Thank you for this! ❤️ The dog we adopted last year, Xena tricked is into believing that all dogs loved being in a crate because she naturally went into a crate and loved it. We adopted another dog 4 days ago, Xander - it's been four sleepless nights! I'll start implementing these tips today! Thanks for the training!
You are very welcome! Good luck with the crate training and stick with it! Make sure to check out our channel for even more crate training tips in our videos.
This video has helped me teach my dog to love his crate. Within the first two weeks of having my puppy he loves his crate. Every night he will walk in or be guided in happily. Thank you so much for this information!!!!! 2 month in I can put my puppy in there to decompress if he is to excited or just needs a nap.
My 11 week old golden retriever pup has been doing awesome and so glad I watched so many videos before bringing him home. I slept next to his crate the first night, then moved farther away to the couch. On day 3 I was in my bed and he farther away in his crate in the kitchen. Since then he's been doing great in the crate and napping there about 3 times per day. It's night time that has suddenly changed. He goes to bed and was sleeping well through the night...9:30 or 10:00pm til about 6:00am or later. All of a sudden, he's waking earlier, like 4:30 and 5:30am. Have tried to let him cry it out and settle but with a working hubby and school kids, that's been a bit difficult. I've resorted to taking him out to potty and lying with him on the couch for another hour of sleep for the both of us. I'm certain I'm breaking some rules here but not sure what else to do. Hate to complain as he's sleeping so good as it is. Thinking maybe I need to keep him up longer or play with him right before bed like you said. That's all I can think of. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Keep him up longer until right before you guys go to bed. Really tucker him out, my little pup is 8 weeks and already crate trained. Just make sure to keep it consistent
Thanks I have a 2 month old havanese and following your technics. After she ate i took her outside, 17 mins wor her out lol, she went to the crate with no problem and fell asleep. I will definitely keep following you and practicing.
It is helping me a lot, I was making the mistake of checking on my puppy again and again all the time when he was in his crib. He used to make those sad noises to let him out and we did. Now as per instructions I covered his crib, kept his toys and the results are amazing. He’s doing so much better now. Thank you so much, you made it so easy for us ❤️
Paula Rodriguez - I check on him twice, he usual habit is to sleep at 10:30 PM. First pee break at 1:30 AM and second at 4:30 AM. By 7:30 AM he is up :)
@@nikhildeore5538 thanks, do you sleep close to the puppy the firsts day to figure this??I will be getting a poodle toy soon and I have been handed most of the responsibility, since I am the one that has been begging for a dog for a long time, wish me luck ✌️
Paula Rodriguez - Yes, I keep the crate near my bed where my hand can reach. Also I cover it with a dark sheet so he rests well, else he’ll just cry for attention :)
We've had our Golden Retriever puppy for 3 days now... We purchased a Snuggle Puppy toy and turn it on at night and give it to her in her crate. She lays on top of it, and quiets down super fast. A few cries (less than 5 minutes worth). Maybe it's just her, or maybe the Snuggle Puppy works, but she loves that thing!
Aw! So glad she loves her Snuggle Puppy. You can also try covering the crate and using a white noise machine or calming music too! She sounds like she's getting the hang of crate training quick. Keep it up!
I have a 9wk morkie. I am using a playpen as his crate. It is day 3 of him sleeping on his own and it is going better then I thought . Beside the whining that I don’t give into , I have started using the in and out method and it is definitely working. Thank you for your tips 🙂
Tbh i don't think that statement is true. Cats, definitely yes. But dogs pee outside too where it isn't "soft" for me dogs have peed more on my floor, than anywhere else, they aren't affected by how soft the spot they pee on is.
I've subscribed to a couple channels to crate train my puppy but just found yours. I feel your approach is more thorough and gives me some tools the others didn't. Thanks
carelodyyy かねきさ I got her 4 days ago. Haven’t slept much either 😂😂. She’s so cute tho. She’s a Rhodesian ridgeback, German shepherd, wolf, and husky all mixed into one
I literally just brought my American Eskimo puppy home last night and she started crying when I put her in her crate and it’s been years since I’ve had a puppy and after watching this and your other crate video I was able to get her to calm down immediately already! Thank you I’m gonna watch the rest of your videos to train her
I stole a puppy from a girl in Alaska once too. She quit crying about it eventually, was around the seven month mark. Then she started crying about what I did to her parents. Orphans....amiright?
I used your video to train my 2 australian shepherds, it worked like a charm, we have a routine at night now, they know that "crate time" means go potty and head to their crates, no problem, and they are always happy as they know a treat is coming. I definitely recommended this video. 😊
I tried the cardboard with the blanket and he went right to sleep. I had tried crating a few days ago, and he whined so bad. I tried again today after going for a bathroom break, and I thought by sitting near him he would calm down. In which he was calmer rather than me walking off. The blanket over the crate, did wonders. We will try the rest later in the day, Thank you.
I get my pup this weekend. I'm very excited and nervous. My last furbaby passed away a year ago and he was 10. Been a long time since I've had a pup, but even then, he was unusual. He never cried. The first night I brought him home, he slept like a champ. He didn't fight his crate. I don't know how I got so blessed but he was awesome. I'm trying to keep in mind that all pups are different and will not have the same experience with the new one. I'm glad you provide this information so that I can prepare for her. Thank you!

Hi!! I just adopted a 5 month old min pin 3 weeks ago. ❤️ I played 30 minutes of Indian flute music from You Tube and she goes right to sleep. Show me how to get her to be in the yard without barking non stop!!!
Do you have a link for the exact song that puts her to sleep? As for keeping her from barking in your yard, I suggest a few tracks from a little known band called NWA. You need really big woffers to play the music loud enough to drown out the sound of the dog barking, but it works. Your neighbors will love it too as they are serenaded by this fine band with the wall shaking bass instead of the dog barking. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
@@enriqueservin6289 She can sleep in her crate good. I have a pen for her with another crate attached to it, and she'll hop in there on her own to sleep.
we have had two puppies for 4 nights so far. Did the first 3 wrong, watched this video and like magic they sleep through the night. I'm in awe!! Thank you so much for this advice. Looking forward to day 5 and hoping it wasn't a fluke!! LOL

Was your wife able to fall asleep with the music and not wet the bed by removing the water at 7pm? Cause you made no mention of a puppy. Only asking because of my second ex wife.
I just got my puppy today and he has a problem where he loves and enjoys the crate when the door is open but as soon as I close the door he starts panicking and it makes me sad. Please help me🥺
Walk away. He will sort things out himself. It may take a few hours of sounds like you are beating a baby seal to death, but then he will accept it. You could also close the door, say "Let's close the door", and when you do, give him a treat. He will realise closing the door equals a treat and love it. Want to skip the hours of misery? Use part of an Oreo for the treat. I taught my pup to drive a stick shift with Oreos. I don't know how he reaches the clutch, but he drives me to the bar every morning....uh, I mean once a month at night for only one drink. And I do know that lady that I just introduced myself to, gave cash to, and leaving to go to her car for a blissful minute and a half.
I got a plan for my dog. My bed is way too small for it to sleep with me (I want it to be a medium-large dog), so I'll have it's crate in a corner in my room. When it gets older it'll know that the crate is their bed but in the morning they can jump in me in the morning, who doesn't wanna be woken up gracefully by your favorite dog? I'm prepared to ignore it while it whines, I just need to brief my family that it will whine. Hopefully they won't hear it much cause we all have loud fans on at night. I want to raise it right, thanks for your help, truly.
It sounds like you have put a lot of thought into plans for your puppy! That’s great. No need for whining- help your pup love it's crate with our great crate training advice. We have several crate training videos on our channel. Thanks for watching!
We are going to pick up our water like you suggested during the night. We kept it down because we didn’t ever want them to be thirsty but totally get what you said.
Thank you for this video. My precious doggie of 15.5 years of age, Lila, passed in june😔. When she was a puppy we crate trained her and it was very helpful in many ways . We're getting a puppy soon but we can't remember how we trained Lila, so I want to thank you for the reminders❤.
We have had a few problems with our pup - mainly because we didn't get her until she was 13 weeks old - after she'd spent 5 weeks with another family that didn't work out for her. Luckily, they'd crate trained her. The best tip we got to get her through the night was the suggestion to put a blanket over the crate: or 'budgie-ing' her, as we called it! This really worked a treat. I've had her 5 weeks now, and she sleeps through the night in her crate. I've left the crate open during the day, so she can retreat there if she wishes -and she has done this occasionally. However, after watching this, I will make an effort to put her in with some high value treats during the day too - so she can get more accustomed to being left during the daytime. At the moment she barks and whines if she's left alone (even for me to go to the loo!). I've started that regime today!
I covered the crate for my pug of 10.5 years! It was like night and day. She would whine and bark when she could see through the crate. But when it was dark, she'd fall right to sleep
My 6 week old pup just got her crate today ( day 2 ) and I was trying to introduce it slowly all day with in and out. Played, ate and drunk, went out to potty 1hour before bed. Then bedtime came and she peed on the blanket placed in the crate. (My mistake) idk if she then did not see the crate as a sleeping place after the accident, but I took the bed out, put her inside and she cried loudly for like 30 mins. I felt so bad. Then I did the cover trick and the wimpier slowed, then faded in 10mins. I am shook!! And so very grateful!!
Thanks for the video! If your puppy pen & crate combo is set up in the family room downstairs during the day, and you want pup to sleep in a crate in your upstairs bedroom at night (so they will feel less lonely), do you just carry the crate upstairs, or do you have another crate upstairs? Or do you recommend having them sleep in the crate downstairs, away from everyone?
I just got a puppy 4 weeks ago and I'm learning so much about how to train her. I got her a crate and I've been putting a pee pad in there and I recently started putting a towel in there. I was going to buy her a bed to put in there but I'm glad that I didn't and I've also been covering the top of her crate and not the front, I'm glad that I'm watching your videos to correct some changes.

We got our 8 weeks old shichon puppy on a Saturday. By the time we came home with the puppy it was already 8pm since we had to get him from another city. Since this is our first puppy neither me not my husband had any idea how to go about dealing with dogs in general. After we brought him home that night we , gave a tour of our house, played with him for a bit, fed him food and water and put him in the crate for an hour. He was crying for 45 mins and 15 mins silent. We left him out after an hour, then he chilled outside for a bit and at around 10.45-11.00 we put him in the crate and turned of the lights and we went to bed. His crate in the living room. He cried and cried for almost 2 hours. Then we realised it's not working so we brought the crate inside our room next to my side of bed and I put my fingers inside the crate and kept reassuring him that we are right next to him and played the tv. After a few mins of crying he slept. After an hour the TV shut down since the sleep timer was on for an hour. Our puppy woke up and started crying a little again. We turned the TV back on and he slept through the night like a baby! (He likes some sound in the background). Sunday night we put him in the crate in the living room, shut down the lights, turned on the TV and retired to our room. He cried for about 1/2 hour and slept through the night! Monday night no crying, slept through the entire night. Tuesday night I actually put him to sleep in my arms and then shifted him to his crate. As soon as I put him in the crate while he was sleeping he just curled up in his bed and fell back asleep. I am amazed at how good a puppy he is being. We feel very very lucky 🙏🥰

FOMO how true and cute,my Husky pup wants to do everything with me and I find your pup facts are exactly what I am going through,it can be exhausting but the love and antics are worth it,can I use my pet mate though? I did not buy a crate, also have an outside small kennel for safety due to being in a country setting.
Huskies are climbers. I know I have put some funny comments on here but this is real. He would climb my eight foot wood fence, jump over, run to the front door, bark to be let it, go right back outside thru the dog door, then repeat. He would climb the fence a dozen times in a row just for fun. He did destroy a couch when I got him from the pound, but he turned out to be a damn good dog. Miss him! Put a metal spiked color on your dog if in the country. Other dogs or coyotes will go for the neck for an easy kill on your dog during a fight. The metal spikes prevent that. Turns out metal spiked colors serve a real purpose, not for douches to put on their dogs to make them look mean. The metal spiked color is a defensive item for a dog, like body armour.

It's ok to do a few extra things at first to help your dog get used to the new environment. Started to cover my Boxers crate today, what a game changer. Tomorrow he will begin eating his meals in it too. On the road to success. Stay positive 😉
I've always covered my dog's crates, all the way thru adulthood. They get less anxious and stressed when it's covered. My Great Dane who is 7 yrs old, prefers the covered crate and will wait till you put the cover on before she goes in.
I am planning on picking up an 8 week old puppy at the end of the month. I had the heart beat stuffed dog on my shopping list already, but I plan on taking it with us when we pick up the dog and rub it (and a few old receiving blankets for cuddling/comfort) on the mother and litter mates, so a familiar scent is there at night when the puppy sleeps.
I’ve had three dogs. All you do is place the crate right to your bed for the first few weeks. That’s it. It doesn’t need to be in another room. If the dog is next to your bed it is fine. I don’t know how this isn’t common sense.
We are glad that worked for your pups. It does not work for every dog. Some of them still need the specific crate training games to build up confidence in the crate, especially for naps.
I split the day into three hour sections. Starting at 6am. We start with a potty session and exercise and then train and socialize with a series of tasks for about an hour, (with a young pup) Then back in the crate for a two hour nap. New puppies sleep from 16 - 18 hours per day. I do five of these training sessions per day, with the most exercise )and shortest naps being in the evening sessions. I take the puppy out at midnight for a last pee break and then he sleeps for six hours before I wake him at 6am for his first potty of the day. By creating a schedule of rest and exercise, I almost never have accidents or the puppy not sleeping through the six hours at night. As soon as he has developed more control, I phase out the midnight pee break and voila! We have a solid 8 hour sleep at night that’s trained.
Day 4 as a doodle mom. On Day 1, I tried to let her sleep in the bed with me but she’s so tiny. Literally 2lbs! I was scared that I was gonna crush her or she’d fall behind my backboard or fall off of the bed since she cant jump yet. My instincts kept waking me up in the middle of the night to make sure she was safe. I ended up just starting to put her in the crate to sleep. She’d cry but eventually get over it & sleep the whole night. But today, I felt like the crying was longer and felt bad because the crate seemed like the only logical option for now. I thought her cries were “sad cries”. Maybe it is but I took your advice about covering the whole crate instead of the back and she instantly stopped crying!! I was even able to get up a few times without “waking her” and causing the crying again. You were spot on about the doggie FOMO! I too need a small confined space for when im overstimulated 😂
We love that you're using the crate! This will really help her learn to be independent, it will help strengthen her bladder and also help her get necessary naps for a growing puppy brain!

It's been 18 years since I've had to train a puppy. We just brought home a 2 month old bassett. I don't want to reinforce bad habits. I was going to start training tomorrow, but I looks like there's no better time than the present! Thanks for the tips!
You're very welcome! Good luck on your journey! Remember that we are here for you if you end up needing additional help!
We'll have a new basset hound in a week and a half. This is the best vid I've watched so far re. crates. Thanks
Going to try this one. Day two of no sleep. FOMO love the term, explains a lot. Finger's crossed.

So how did you manage to?

I’m getting my golden retriever puppy this weekend. My 8 yr old daughter has no idea!!!
Getting rid of your 8 year old for a golden pup? I say best trade in history!
We might be able to help you best at the Pro-Level where you can submit photos and videos in our private student-only facebook group for our trainers to review and give feedback to.
Thank you so much, you made it so easy for us ❤️
Perfect. Now you know how to put your boyfriend in a kennel. Truth be told, puppy sad noises are far worse than grown male sad noises.
Nikhil D'eore during night, at first how often do you have to check on him, in case he needs to pee?
Your doctor can give you a prescription cream to clear up that morkie. Was your rash "down there" like mine was?

WTF is "in and out method"?

I stole a puppy from a girl in Alaska once too. She quit crying about it eventually, was around the seven month mark. Then she started crying about what I did to her parents. Orphans....amiright?
I used your video to train my 2 australian shepherds, it worked like a charm, we have a routine at night now, they know that "crate time" means go potty and head to their crates, no problem, and they are always happy as they know a treat is coming. I definitely recommended this video. 😊
Thank you so much for your comment! We are happy that your pups are doing so well!
I just got her Friday and I'm certainly going to try this to see what happens. First time puppy parent and I want to learn EVERYTHING.

Yes! We agree!

My 6 week old pup just got her crate today ( day 2 ) and I was trying to introduce it slowly all day with in and out. Played, ate and drunk, went out to potty 1hour before bed. Then bedtime came and she peed on the blanket placed in the crate. I bought the heart beat puppy. Third night so far so good.

Bought the heartbeat stuffed dog and the calming spray of mother dogs pheromes....here's hoping they work!
Those are good tools but don't forget the training! Training will make more of a difference than tools. If you need the games to help your puppy love the crate, they can be found here:

That puppy is so cute!
Thank you, hes a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
You aren't so bad yourself! ; )
Going to be using these tips! Last night was our first night home and he was crying so bad! Literally slept on the floor next to the crate and he slept most of the night lol but that's not realistic. Thank youuuu!
It's ok to do a few extra things at first to help your dog get used to the new environment. He's gone through a huge change and doing a few things for a few days or a week won't build a forever habit. Take a look at this video for some more recent crate training tips! ua-cam.com/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/v-deo.html
Your videos are great, and you deserve more followers compared to some of the crappy videos that come up when you search UA-cam! I'm sure the advice will come in handy for our new puppy when we get him. Thanks!
Aww, thanks for your kind words. We just started the channel a few months ago :-)
Started to cover my Boxers crate today, what a game changer. Tomorrow he will begin eating his meals in it too. On the road to success. Stay positive 😉
Great video. How long would you continue to cover the crate? Is this something that continues into adulthood or do you stop covering at some point?
I've always covered my dog's crates, all the way thru adulthood. They get less anxious and stressed when it's covered. My Great Dane who is 7 yrs old, prefers the covered crate and will wait till you put the cover on before she goes in.
How To Train A Dream Dog so should you uncover during the day? Should it stay covered when you have crate time during the day to encourage naps?
I am planning on picking up an 8 week old puppy at the end of the month. I had the heart beat stuffed dog on my shopping list already, but I plan on taking it with us when we pick up the dog and rub it (and a few old receiving blankets for cuddling/comfort) on the mother and litter mates, so a familiar scent is there at night when the puppy sleeps.
Why would you rub your shopping list on the mother and litter mates?
I'm going to try the puppy ❤️ beat for sleep time. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you
Please don't beat your puppy, Kathie.
Don’t beat your puppy pleaaasseee😳. Are u joking?
@@ziadsaleh4317 I think there talking about the calming sounds. Dog heart beat soothing sounds
@@Tazzmaneytv We used to wrap an old alarm clock in a towel to mimmick heart beat of litter mates, mother... worked ok and they cant shred it! lol
My puppy sleeps allot during the day and is mostly restless at night. Should I wake her during the day more to help reset her time?
do more exercise during the day, she should be tired by night time
but don’t force her to wake up, puppies are 60% of the time sleeping 20% eating and 20% playing
Take away her watch.
I split the day into three hour sections. Starting at 6am. We start with a potty session and exercise and then train and socialize with a series of tasks for about an hour, (with a young pup)
Then back in the crate for a two hour nap.

My first late dog never had to be crated.
But this new puppy, IS A DESTROYER.
So I am excited to crate him!
Today is day#1!
Awesome! Let us know how it goes and if we can help you with anything!
Every good dog I have had has destroyed a couch. You are in good hands. Sorry for your loss of the other one.
I finally gave in to my daughter wanting a puppy. Now let's try these tips. Will give an update after a week or so.
We would love a pupdate in our Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group: howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
Me too, I’m awake at 8 because
He had to pee
