    Before everyone shits on DD, was this a Govt profile or a SOCOM profile? If the barrel was Govt, then this is a known issue with full auto fire. Govt profile barrels fail around 400-500 rounds when firing full auto with carbine gas. This is what drove the upgrade from the M4 to the M4A1. Original M4 was made for support troops and had NO full auto, only 3 round burst with Govt profile barrel. Special Forces liked the compact size, but not the burst fire, so they took M4 uppers and combined them with M16A1 lowers they had with full auto FCG. During their exercises, they had barrel failures. This led to the development of the SOCOM barrel to handle the full auto fire. If this was a Govt profile barrel, then DD EXCEEDED the typical lifespan of the Govt barrel on full auto.

    I believe part of the reason the barrels are dropping is how the muzzle device is designed to blow gas upwards to reduce muzzle rise. As the barrel heats up that pressure from the muzzle device jetting gas upwards is what pushes the barrel down.

      The gas block will always blow before your barrels even goes out of spec unless the barrel is repeatedly stressed like this, at least on fn/colt, so either they have a very good gas block or barrels that aren’t as great. You could tell it was getting very over gassed though and this is one of only a couple meltdowns I’ve seen where the gas tube isn’t what failed

      @shadoraeveon9312 10 місяців тому +4

      @@599Dan If anyone ever has to fire their rifle in a manner similar to this they’re likely not gonna last as long as the gun lol but the socom barrel profile was intended to stop bending when “dropped” but the army had always realized this was unnecessary since before they even issued the profile. The issue was the barrels not being replaced after likely hundreds of extreme cooling cycles which were warping barrels. The gas tube is designed so it will fail far before the barrel. That being said it’s not like you can’t make them out of some crazy material that can take the heat. I’ve never been a dd fanboy but man I’m disappointed with this guy’s result. The angle of ejection changed almost immediately, indicating it was stretching to become overgassed, I really always thought dd barrels were high quality despite the hype but now I’m not so sure. I’d personally get an FN cold hammer forged over Daniel Defense after seeing this video

None of y’all can even own machine guns lmao. This is completely irrelevant. Tbh, I prefer bcm over dd as my personal experience is bcm has been consistently better. I own both and a knights 11.5 and a radian 14.5. I would never do this to ANY of my guns..it’s just so stupid. It’s not representative of anything other than “don’t mag dump that gun for 10 straight minutes or something bad might happen.” There is a reason machine guns have specialized barrels….

    Not saying that we should never buy premium rifles. But it's funny how lots of people insist on companies like Daniel Defense because it's "more reliable, yet this malfunctioned at 200 rounds less than a S&W M&P Sport II and had a more catastrophic failure. Just shows me how the main factor in getting a fighting rifle is more about just getting a good rifle rather than an expensive one.

      @@GoldenWebb Well no, this test is ultimately extremely unrealistic. You're pushing an AR to its absolute limits doing something the system was never designed to do. The AR15 is NOT a light support weapon. It's not a belt fed machine gun.
      Also, the problem you've identified isn't inherently a Daniel Defense issue. It's an issue with the absurd government profile which flies in the face of all known physics and metallurgy. If you get an imbalanced piece of metal red hot, it's going to bend in the direction of the largest unsupported mass and eventually if you keep getting it hotter and hotter that heavier end will just break off. Whether it's a barrel or not that is what will happen.
      You should try out a Criterion CORE or a Ballistic Advantage Hanson or a BCM ELW or something that uses a continuous taper. Obviously they'll still fail but they won't fail like this.
      What you've discovered here is what SOCOM discovered in the early 2000s which resulted in the SOCOM profile barrel. That was a silly answer to the problem because dudes were mag dumping on full auto like crazy in Vietnam and their barrels weren't bursting because they were using the barrel the rifle was originally designed with which is a pencil profile where the mass remains consistent throughout the length of the material. It actually might get thinner towards the muzzle but not significantly. The point is...they hung a whole bunch of weight at the end so now it bends and bursts when it gets red hot.
      This isn't in anyway an issue of poor quality from Daniel Defense. It's literally physics.

      Out of curiosity, when was the last time you needed to fire 600 rounds continuously? It’s not disappointing, AR-15’s are notorious for having barrels or gas tubes rupture. They’re not meant to shoot like machine guns, short bursts are fine but anything substantial will cause issues.

      Sure, that's how things are supposed to work under normal circumstances for standard infantry troops. Still, that scenario was supposedly common enough in the Spec-Ops community to spur the development and adoption of the M4A1 SOCOM and its heavy profile barrel. At least, that's how it was explained in videos about the subject. @@jacksonconnelly1158

    • @armorers_wrench
      @armorers_wrench 10 місяців тому +3

      @@JR15A2 The SOCOM profile barrel was the wrong answer to the question at hand. However, the barrel bursting issue was apparently occurring in training not so much in real combat. It was some drill they were doing to break contact using the M4A1 as a makeshift support weapon.
      Now, why would I say the SOCOM barrel was the wrong answer? Well, back in Viet-fuckin-nam when every M16 had full auto and combat was often very short range dudes were mag dumping on full auto left and right and they did not experience the bursting barrel issue. They were using the pencil profile barrel which makes much more sense on a light and handy fighting rifle or carbine. Even with the older pencil barrels the accuracy deviation isn't all that severe but with modern stress relieved pencil profile barrels you will no longer have any POI shift. Instead your group will simply open up a bit but in a very predictable manner. This has been tested on youtube if you're interested in looking it up.
      Even with a suppressor so long as you zero with the suppressor on the gun a pencil profile would most likely be fine but even if that wasn't suitable you could just do a medium profile continuous taper and then you'd DEFINITELY be fine with a suppressor and the barrel won't burst AND it won't be so heavy. I dunno if you've ever handled an M4A1 with a SOCOM profile barrel but I own one(not full auto obviously, but its an M4A1 upper with a pinned and welded Surefire muzzle device) that uses the RIS2 quad rail and that rifle is WAY heavier than it really needs to be. It's not the rail either, I handled a rifle with the same rail but a gov profile barrel and the gun really wasn't much heavier than a URGI with the Geissele mlok rail. It was a little bit but not much. I think the difference between the Geissele Mk16 and the RIS2 is like 2oz?
      The lore around the SOCOM barrel also isn't true. It doesn't really retain its accuracy while its hot like is often claimed online nor is it significantly more accurate than a standard gov profile. 9hole reviews has an excellent video debunking these claims. It's a lot of weight without any legitimate gain. The reason the barrels stopped bursting is because the taper of the barrel not the amount of material.

    • @chef7734
      @chef7734 10 місяців тому

      9 hole review did not compare two comparable barrels. It was a flawed test. You need to test two compare a Colt socom barrel to a colt gov profile barrel as both are button broached and not a chf to a button broached barrel like 9 hole did. Hell yiu get accuracy differences frin an identical profile button broached and chf barrel.
      From 23 years of actual military experience in the military and most of that in socom and now a contractor for socom, yes we tend to see an added benefit to the heavier barrel and accuracy on the m4 platform on service rifles.

      Iraq veteran did a PSA meltdown and I want to say it was in the 400 ballpark. CHF barrel upper and the barrel was actually still functional, gas tube just blew so in theory you could by another tube for a few bucks and keep going. That doesn't quite scream 4-5x the cost, but let's not hurt egos here

    How about something with a Ballistic Advantage Hanson profile barrel? One of the performance series preferably so it's 4150CMV and not stainless since stainless isn't meant to really take that kind of abuse. I think BA is putting out great barrels and complete uppers especially for the price

      Aero barrels are Ballistic Advantage. We will look into the Hanson barrels for sure!

      @@GoldenWebb Aero owns BA so technically all BA barrels are "Aero" but not all Aero barrels are BA, BA is still their own small shop even though Aero owns them. BA's uppers will have a BA barrel and Aero receiver, and their Logic handguard is basically an updated Aero Atlas handguard. Being a smaller shop the QC on their barrels can be a little tighter. I bought one of their uppers with a Hanson on sale years ago expecting it to be a spare mess around upper and it ended up being my favorite upper, it shot better than two BCMs I have and felt noticeably nicer than a PSA that was similar in price and I kind of fell in love with it, it now has 8k rounds without so much as a hiccup and I ended up buying another one last month as a Christmas present to myself in another length and I love that one too. I did not expect to love their stuff as much as I did, so I bought the second one as a serious defensive one.

      @@GoldenWebb Now, serious talking... I would suggest adding some DIY protection for the armpits. But most importantly, add a NECK GUARD to the Body Armor/Plate Carrier..
      If you depend only on the mask of the helmet, any flinch or move in the wrong time will send the sharplne of a CF to the neck.
      Just like the armpits, any cut can cause dangerous bleeding.
      I know it can be uncomfortable.. but Neck guards had saved the lives that plate carriers without them could not.
