  • Skeeter Loads are 7.5 grains of Unique powder behind any 240 - 250 grain bullet...but a case can be made that it should be expanded to include 200 - 250 grain bullets with the same 7.5 grains of Unique. Powerful and yet controllable, the 44 Special is well loaded with Skeeter Loads... here is the range report...

    I know this is an old video, but I hope you see this comment. First, thanks for posting the recipe for Skeeter loads. I've heard of them but my manual tops out a 6.3gr Unique for a .430 240gr bullet for 44 Spl. The magnum section gets a bit confusing. I have a 629-5 with 3" barrel that I love. But it is a real flinch inducer with powerful 44 Magnum loads (even "range" loads). I've been tooling up (ordered a Lee four die set) for shooting 44 Spl to see if it will bring me some more enjoyment over this pistol. Snscasting has a nice coated .430" 240gr LSWC hard cast that I plan to try. Maybe I can split a poker card without holding it up in front of the muzzle! LOL.

    Great group Steve, even if it is only 12.5 yds. Looks like an excellent bullet. I will have to get that mould when i start casting (someday). Love the grips on your SBH. Mine has some Roper style with finger grooves. They came on it when i bought it 11 or 12 yrs ago. Good wood certainly makes a sixgun look nice, esp a single action. Good shooting to u

      The Reloader Dude - Keep up that great work on that channel of yours...!! Problem with that silhouette bullet is that it is shaped like an aerodynamic football and super accurate, but it's not good for hunting - slips through like a FMJ. For that the Keith 429421 is superior - accurate and high shock hunter...You probably already have that one. Best to ya, FC

    Nice.. The next time you are up here, I will have to give you some Rooster Jacket to just give a try.. I wonder if it would help in the standard deviation inconsistency.. In my experience and you have said it too.. Standard deviation really show's up at longer ranges. Pistol out to 50 or so yards doesn't matter.. in Rifle out to 300 yards it doesn't matter. You get beyond those and that's when it shows up. Good video Cookie, Glad that you like the RCBS Mold.. Dave

      Thorsaxe777 - Speaks much - now that I'm thinking of it - when you give a bullet caster a mold, there's always the chance that the bullet will shoot like junk in his / her gun. But when the bullet shoots gangbusters...It's like fine music the gift that keeps on giving... Thanks again, Dave for taking the chance...I've got something for you as well...Steve

      Well the one thing we don't have enough in this world is Joy Steve.. I feel Joy when You are getting such good results with that Mold.. It's one of my favorites. Like i said.. I loaned one out and the guy forgot to give it back and discovered that later.. I bought a new one and lost it in the move to the new house..(Three moves equals a fire).. and bought another one to replace that one that I had lost, However it turned up later.. So I had Three of them.. I knew you had the .44 bug at one time and thought you could use one. It Give me something Money can't buy.. Joy Steve.. Good shooting to ya Dave.

    Skeeter knew his .44! Good video as always...think those cards were "bullet proof" :).

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 років тому

      Jim S - Funny thing was the holes were mostly just to the left of the cards so I held a little to the right, when I did that, the bullets hit right at POA - then I'd hold right on the card and the bullets would hit a little left...cards had a charmed life...Best to ya, FC and Have a great day...!!

      I bet you would enjoy the offerings from Cimarron and maybe Taylor. while they are traditional and not target guns they are a real hoot. I take lots of newbies and older folks who have never shot such a gun and everyone loves to shoot the old 'cowboy' guns. If I do my part the groups from my Cimarron are as good as any. They are also pretty nice looking.. about maybe 85% as good as a nice Colt?

      Doran Maxwell - You bet - Those reproductions made by Uberti are top quality - if they went back in time, any cowpoke of the Old West would grab those and smile... plus the steels used are much better than anything they had on the frontier... Have a great Memorial Day, FC

    Just purchased Berry's plated 240 grain .44 FP bullets. I'm having difficulty finding loading data. Hoping to load 'Skeeter loads' with 7.5 grain Unique. Can I use load data for 240 grain lead bullets?

    • @troy9477

      kep67 - Check the loading manuals. I think they say that it's safe to use lead bullet data for the Berry's plated bullets.

      Why ?
      Anytime i hear that question, i think of the image of Christopher Columbus about to sail fom the pier and the guy watching them and saying "Why...?"
      Oh, i digress. To measure the velocity of the bullet. If it's higher than the reloading manual states as maximum, then it's a warning sign. ... --- ...

    Oh.. not a fan of unique.. I like True blue and accurate #5 cleaner and meter better and lower SD.. Round nose flat points seem to shoot more accurately for me.

    Researching the Blackhawk .45 Colt I come to this video. It seems that the 44 Special was the .44 magnum of its day. Why say that ? While fresh in my mind the load data for a stout .45 Colt 250 grain round using Lyman data is puzzling to say the least. The Max load calls for 9.0 grains of Unique with only 875 fps. But looking deeper we see that a 200 grain bullet with a Max load of 9.6 of Unique will wiz by you at 1083 fps in .45 colt ! But here is the tricky part-- is it accurate in a .45 colt Blackhawk? In Mike Venturino's Book "Shooting Six guns of the Old West" he says no it isn't. While the book is For Black Powder shooting a lot of information for smokeless powder is also included. Also bullet diameter. His test and writing talks about Ruger and others having a modern .451 groove dia. You have talked about this yourself. His viewpoint is interesting in that he tested and believes the most accurate bullet is with .454 Dia. He goes into great detail on the subject of Grove dia past and present. He states that this .454 is good for guns ranging from the late 1800s to the current production. Remarkably it is not an Elmer Keith design. His "go to" bullet is the Lyman # 454190 or the Hensley and Gibbs #22. Also remarkable is his view on accuracy whether this is shot from a black powder round or smokeless. So why am I talking about this ? Well the big question leads me to think. What's so Special about the .44 Special? vs the .45 Colt ? Why even reload .44 Special when you own a Ruger .45 Colt?
    It is my belief that the modern reloading handbooks are grossly under max for the .45 Colt round. Why? Because not everyone owns a Ruger Blackhawk ! SAA cowboy action guns such as the fine Taylor Deluxe Smoke Wagon likes to keep load in the 750 fps and under range. This was due to Italian SAA's manufacturing limits rather that original 1873 Colt design made by Colt.
    Even if the original 40 grains of black powder was cut down to 35 grains by US Army Request it still packed a 900 fps punch. Have we been duped by the Italians with our Reloading Manuals following the safest course ? Well I will not be the one to go beyond the MAX value for the .45 colt to get a few extra 100 fps. But I won't be afraid to run a stout load through the Blackhawk either. I have a lot of confusion in wondering why I would ever load for the .44 Special when I buy my .45 Colt Blackhawk. I hope Steve you can clear this up for me. -- as always good shootin to you VE

    25 yards?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 років тому +1

      BFerry10 - 12 1/2 yards - but the smallest group would have been 1 1/4" at 25 yards...Having done the chronographing and preliminary accuracy testing at 12 1/2 yards, the 25 yard shooting can follow. That SILH bullet from RCBS is a real tackdriver...befits a bullet designed to take down the 200 meter rams... Best to ya, FC
