  • So anytime we see the Special moniker on a cartridge - means it heralds from the transition period from black powder to smokeless at the turn of the 1900s. The 44 Special was not loaded properly by the ammo companies at the time so it was relegated as a target round because of its superb accuracy. It took Elmer Keith to come along to reach the 44 Special's potential...

    I have to admit that I’ve never tried blue dot in 44 special. It sounds fantastic. I’ve loaded blue dot powder in 45 colt for a S&W model 25-15. Usually with 44 special I use unique for skeeter loads. Or I use IMR SR-4756 for heavy loads let’s say Lyman 429421 at 1000 FPS. I love all of your videos.

    I appreciate your vids. I have to say that I wish I enjoyed reloading half as much as you do. Frankly, I have to kind of force myself to do it. lol

      -- It's OK ... no one needs to like reloading... it can be a chore. I've been lucky in having a wife and family that have supported my shooting over the years. I stay up late and get up early to give me the extra hours to reload. Doesn't work for everybody though... Best to ya, FC

    I absolutely love your videos. What a great channel.
    I've tried Blue Dot in multiple measures, including the Lee Auto Disk. (I own six of them!) I did some testing, recently, and found out that nearly all of my reloads will be within +/- 0.1 or 0.2 grains. Then, out of nowhere, it will throw 0.5 grains high or low! I've done this test many times over the years, same result every time. The measure will work great with Blue Dot, then, it throws an inaccurate charge.
    Sometimes, I have to measure 50 charges to find one, but I usually do. I went to an electronic dispenser for Blue Dot, which I find complements my Lee Auto Disk measures quite nicely.
    All setups are different and it could just be me and I'll definitely admit to having a cheap electronic scale. Also, I did find the size of the rotor did seem to matter, the large one appeared to be the most accurate. Maybe not all rotors are the same?
    Either way, it's a good reminder of the basic safety rules, never throw close to maximum and periodically check your equipment. The difference in 10.0 and 10.5 grains of Blue Dot in a .44 magnum is definitely not a safety concern and probably wouldn't impact accuracy much at all.

      wmtheflash - Your experiences really highlight why we like those easy to meter powders...and accurate metering powders depend on granule shape plus any graphite that might be in the coatings...Thanks for your comments and good reloadin' to ya, Steve

    I love the 44 special such a wonderful cartridge!! That sizer is slick!! Friend of mine had the wonderful S&W mod 24 and then sold it without my knowledge. Our friendship was in question for awhile... LOL I've always used the lee auto disc, I found that the small difference in powder charges still shot better than what I could hold the gun on target...

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  8 років тому

      The Lee auto disk is just fine if you happen to be able to use the charges a particular disk chamber throws. This 10 grain charge of Blue Dot is almost max...should be fun to chrono it and shoot it... Best to ya, FC

    Regarding the autodrum, I'm sending mine back as the plastic stop is being gouged by the cast body & the retention ring is making the whole measure cant when loading 9mm. Hopefully lee makes it right.

      Lee has a winner in that measure - if they don't make it right, they are only hurting themselves... Best to ya, bro.... FC Steve

    Great information once again. I like the tip on the upside down press to speed up the process. Can you tell me a if we still need to use gas checks and maintain the brinell hardness on magnum and rifle loads with powder coated bullets?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  8 років тому

      campbell2054 - I don't think the accuracy that PC bullets are getting from full power rifle loads has been worthy of reporting - I can use just plain range scrap for everything loaded for handguns including magnums. And they shoot great. Softer PC bullets is supposed to be the case for rifle also with gas checks, but my personal preference is to use commercial jacketed bullets for full power rifle loads - much better terminal expansion etc. As for FMJ loading - those are cheap enough in 223 to just shoot those and not look back. Best to ya, FC

    I enjoy your videos Fortune Cookie. I also like that you experiment and find more efficient reloading solutions, which brings me to a question, and perhaps you can make a video on it.
    Many people recast bullets, or recast range lead. Has anyone tried to recast powder coated bullets? What does it do in a casting pot? Is there a lot of toxic smoke and fumes?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  8 років тому

      -- Lou Park -- Thanks for the suggestion - it's a good question - already have an answer for you - the PC bullets just melt fine. The PC just floats on the slag to be skimmed off - have not noticed any fumes from the PC - it does not burn off, just dkim it out with the dross. It's in a couple of my other casting videos... Best to ya, FC

    I have 2 of the auto drums. My original has been dropping dead nuts accurate. I quit trickle charging my target loads and I drop them all from the auto drum now. Well, last night I set up a new auto drum and it did not perform well with Clays powder. I was getting as much as .4 in variation. Just plinking loads though so that's fine. I'll do more loading with it and see if it's the powder or the drum.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  8 років тому

      Hmmm, this is good to know - all three of mine are nice performers. But they do have their quirks with some of the drums leaking with small particle powders. Once I find the drums that don't handle the ball powders well, then that drum is set aside for flake or extruded powders. Please let me know if changing drums makes that 2nd ADPM sing or not... Best Regards, FC

    I like the 44 spl cause I can trim old 44 mag brass to 44 spl.. the only 44 spl gun I have now is a Cimarron model P black powder frame one... I like it a lot better than one in 45 Colt

    Good and concise information, I can't hep but notice the bandage on you're finger, remember Less Nesman with WKRP? Generaly always had a bandage somewhere, I acquired a rescue mould, Lyman44 cal swc 245 gr #429421 2 cavity , a 2 cavity swc 45 cal mould and a 4 cavity .357 swc mould with handles from a guy who was tired of moving them around his basement along with a coffee can of 45 long colt brass 2 cast iron pots and 2 large cast iron ladles and an Lyman ingot mold. I looked up the .44 cal number on the Lyman site but the information is sketchy is this a 44 special bullet? Mike from Wisconsin

      Mike Rupp - Sorry for the delayed reply, but Google did not post your comment in my inbox...I won't see it for months until another comment that is posted leads me here and I stumble onto it... Congrats on getting that great stuff - hope you've been able to start using it...Your Lyman 429421 is the classical 44 Special / 44 Magnum Keith bullet - perhaps the most famous cast bullet of all time...It is very accurate and also a great hunting bullet. I have videos up on the Keith bullet...Have a great summer, FC

    You have to take people's stories of problems with new equipment with a big grain of salt. My dad has been reloading for 40 years, he's a card-holding MENSA member who taught in nuclear power school in the navy and then was an engineer until he retired. He was having issues with one of the Auto Drums and it was because he wasn't using it right. So...anyone can have issues :)

      Toolness1 - AHA!! I know another MENSA guy - has security clearance with the fed gov. They have their own brand of playing cards...I split 'em with 44 and 45, but do have a few for keepsakes. You dad is plenty A-OK - helped and is helping keep our country strong... Best to ya, FC

    Not a fan of priming on press. Prefer lee hand primer. Going to drill a couple of screw holes in the back and mount it like their new priming tool and see how that worked. I do most steps one at a time but like to do the indivual steps as fast as I can. Take care

    Im new to reloading but in case you ever see this comment ill go ahead and ask are you using large pistol magnum primers in 44 special? I haven't seen the magnum primers being used in the manuals i bought. 44 mag and special are what im most likely to be reloading so im very curious

    Cookie -- Why don't you chamfer that seating die? It's easy to do. Stick a conical grind stone meant for a die grinder in your drill press and give it a couple bumps. Clean the grit out of it and go.

    Ever push these powder coated bullets hard in the 44 magnum? I'll be trying it once I get all set up. I've pushed powder coated bullets well over 1650 fps in rifles so they should hold up.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 років тому

      Toolness1 - Yes - have shot PC 240 grain Lee SWC TLs with Elmer's 22 grains of 2400 - they shot very well and cleanup was easy...video is up on that one... Your 1650fps already vindicates that and other shooters have driven PC bullets even higher. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to ya..!! FC

      Good to know, thanks for the info! That's probably the mold I will get to start out with. My 44 should arrive at my FFL on Wed this week and hopefully it'll warm up a bit around Christmas so I can shoot it! Have a great Christmas!

      Toolness1 - One of your comments did not get posted - about the gas blow by causing leading in forcing cones or barrels = couldn't agree with you more and that's why we cannot use cast bullets that are smaller than specifications for the gun we are shooting them in...small bullets are poison. Bullets way too big are also poison, but like Goldilocks - just right is just fine...that's why we measure cylinder throats, slug barrels and size our bullets (when necessary). Merry Christmas to ya...!! FC

    • @Toolness1
      @Toolness1 7 років тому

      I guess I got lucky on my Taurus, it's a great shooter and all the cylinder throats are nice and tight with .429. I was a bit nervous going with a brand that seems to get a lot of hate, but mine's a joy to shoot.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 років тому

      Toolness1 - Like any gun or brand - there's love and hate - look at Glock, 1911s, Rem 870s, Moss 500s, Ruger (some have not forgiven Bill Ruger for advocating 10 round magazines), S & W (quality shifts?) so have no fear - Taurus makes some great guns and you should have no negativity towards your Raging Bull. I like my Tauruses - includes my Rossi M92 lever guns... Best Regards, FC
