Dropping Trees And Discing The Field Before A Snowstorm?

  • The warm weather in Minnesota is giving everyone Spring Fever! With no snow hardly at all this winter, Alan decided to see if he could get a jump on Spring Field Work and start discing. He hooks up the John Deere Disc to the International 1256 and gives it a Spring tune-up before he heads out to the field. There are still a few spots that seem to have some frost in the ground, but any land he can get worked up now saves time come planting season. Will an impending snowstorm put an end to our jump on spring fieldwork? Alan also does a bit of logging as he spotted a tree that could be dangerous if we leave it standing.

    We've had a couple of people comment that it's not safe to have a cigarette near a gas tank. What you are seeing is the stick from a tootsie pop, NOT a cigarette. Jen's dad doesn't smoke. Jason gave him a tootsie pop, which is Jen's Dad's favorite. They are completely safe.

    That disc'd up ground should help soak up the moisture good.

    There’s a saying here in Mississippi that when working on rotting trees, a hard hat will protect you well enough to be buried in an open coffin.

    I was cleaning up a brush pile with the chain saw and found a cattle panel. Dulls a chain quick. We lost a heifer a few years ago when a tree fell over in the pasture on her. Freak thing but it happens. We got rid of our offset cutting disc when we bought a wing disc. Like you said, leave the wings up and they dig deep.

    Tks for sharing. It's nice to get alittle field work done early. This is Friday the 22. We got 9 inches of snow with more coming. Temperatures are down in the 30's. Please be careful out cutting wood alone.. its like being in the silo. It's safer to have someone else with you.

    Only problem with running with the wings up is when you put them down for finish work you will notice that the mains have worn more, and you eventually end up ridging the centers. But you have to replace all of them for even disking.🙄 We went to an offset for primary pass, and then a BWA with wings down, and roller behind it. Everyone has different situations. Great video, and near perfect drop on the tree!👍

    I remember growing up in Southern Wisconsin before the Dutch Elm disease came through. We had three big white elms for shade in our front yard. Their trunks were at least 2 foot thick and they were about 50+ foot tall. The one grew up leaning over about 15 degrees. My grandmother said that the men used to tie horses up to it used in threshing season. She said it grew that way leaning from the horses pulling on it, but it grew to over 50 maybe 60 foot tall in my day regardlless. Then the Dutch Elm beatles infested them one by one and they were cut down and burned in a futile effort to prevent the spread of the disease. I remember scenes of big elms everywhere along our road to town being cut and burned until there were no big elms anywhere leaving only the oaks, maples and a few hickories for shade trees.😢

    Oh, and if it means anything our barn is built out of elm with tamarack rafters. Elm is quite the wood.

    1) I was trying to look at your new evaporator with the pans on to see about the chimney is it needs to be lowered! 20 I was going to say, if you're going to plant corn the disk are doing a good job, and maybe you wouldn't have to mold board it! you beat me to it!

    Do you do any cash crop any grain, or is it all for cattle feed?

  • @ES-zt8sj
    @ES-zt8sj Місяць тому

    I have a question. Do you always work the field in the same direction? Are you discing it the same way as the corn was planted? Is there a reason? Has it anything to do with the slant of the hill/land?

    • @trinitydairy
      @trinitydairy  Місяць тому

      I am discing the same way the corn was planted, but when we go with the harrow, we will go at an angle or sometimes round and round. Mainly to get it as smooth as possible. Sometimes we will work the hills a little differently.
