In my review I forgot to mention this ship has issues fitting 32 SCU containers at the moment, it honestly needs a grid re-work. I can actually agree that this ship would be between a 6 and 9 on the score. In direct comparison to the C2 Hercules, the caterpillar will lose. The caterpillar is still a great ship, she feels great and looks great. Modularity as well as some balances passes to bring it more in line with competitors will truly make it shine.
If only the hauling missions incoming would allow you to choose box sizes so you don't get screwed out of later missions. What I hear from evocati is the missions choose you box sizes and the cat max box size on grid is 24scu, which is a really awkward number to divide by. Grid reworks definitely needed on a TON of ships
What I love about the Cat is a couple of things. Which make it a very subjective 10/10 for me personally. 1.) It's drake. That alone pushes the rating ^^ 2.) It's a brick. Meaning in a space game about space (no air!) it does not need to look like a modern day airplane like so many other ships in SC do. 3.) At least compared to other ships it actually has more than one window. 4.) The Fantasy I bought into that eventually all it's potentially is realized. Yes, I know these can't be facts, but to me... I love my Cat ♥
In the future, I can envision having an outpost on some backwater planet with a Caterpillar up on blocks serving as my very own starfaring hillbilly mansion; each cargo bay serving as its own room. Like an 890Jump on a budget. "This right here is my jacoozi spa! This here's my gym! I added a toilet so I don't have to run so far to the crapper." Something like that.
She's old, has a lot of quirks, is slow and a bit lumbering, and could use some CIG love, but I Love the Caterpillar. This ship is tough, very versatile -we use it for hauling cargo, ground vehicles , an armada of Furies, as a mobile base, and our heavy hitter. She packs a decent punch when fully crewed, and I use it constantly. But really, I love it because it has personality, I love the looks, the throaty reverberations the thumpy guns, the unique design. We've had more multiplayer fun in the CAT than any other ship in our crew. Long Live The Caterpillar 😊
I wonder something, because I love the look of this one also. Can a large box be stocked full of missiles that can be manually stuck to a fury's missile racks? If so, you could not only hold a fleet of MX's, you could keep them stocked after an engagement
Proud Cat owner here...one the few ships in game that gives the true 'big rig hauler' vibe. That said, I too would also appreciate it having more thrust :)
Caterpillar my beloved... She may be slow but she'll get there in style, my only real complaint is the cargo grid, which is why I'm working on an Ironclad CCU. I'm glad to see someone else appreciates this beautiful ship also. This and the vulture have basically been my daily drivers ever since I bought them in-game, and I have no* regrets *(hours wasted trying to load it are not a viable regret according to Drake customer service)
One of my favorite looking larger ships. Bought it durring Invictus/Defense Con since i mostly just see C2s flying around. It might not be as smooth as a Herc, but its definitely got more character
For me the biggest advantage of the Cat is how easy it is to access the cargo. No other ship has as many or as large of doors compared to the cargo space available, especially if you have a crew. That and it can work as a mini carrier by stuffing a Fury in each cargo bay. 🙂
As if any character would survive long enough for age to be an issue (unless they make you age so fast that it becomes an issue. Which means the game loses appeal)
Love you content! I don't know why, but I just don't explore my ships, I get straight into gameplay, so I appreciate these to be like ooh that's cool I didn't know that was there :)
I have bought it ingame and use it way more often than my C2 loaner. About the cat, in the early days CIG mentioned that you can drop off your main body as an station and fly around with your commando ship. Also, they mentioned that you will be able to swap the modules out, so its not only an cargo hauler, but also a med station and so on ( but to be honest, we havent heared anything about these ideas for a long time ).
They will probably update and gold pass all Drake ships after they have redone all Drake parts while doing the Ironclad. Apart from the odd-size cargo grid unadapted to 32 SCu containers, the placement of the Tractor beams is also very bad as they do not have visibility inside the cargo hold, not even talking of the frontal one.
It would make sense for each module of the Cat to have it's own tractor beam internally. Of course this ship was made at a time when they weren't sure how to design ships. The Cat is great despite it, as you can use the fps tractor tools to overcome the ships shortcoming. Love the Cat though. She is as beautiful as she could be when introduced, and she is still beautiful today.
@@edwarddomenico9601 Yes, of course. The issue would be at least reduce when the command module will be detachable, but when ? They could at least put the other tractor beam further away at the tip of the wing, whicwould be minimal work for them.

My favorite ship by a mile, and I couldn't even tell you why. I always come back to my Cat, I'll fly it over a C2 any day. By the way, there is another weapons locker on the bottom deck of the command module, to the left side of the ladder.
I have this and the C2 as loaners. Of the two I can not deny that the C2 is the better ship, but I hate it -- it's so very, very, loud and just isn't my style. The Cat on the other hand just pushes all the right buttons for me, I adore it. Between the two I'd far rather have the Cat, but I might recommend the C2 more.
Nothing beats a joint effort of 3 Caterpillars as a convoi 2 are Traders and one is a Mini Carrier stuffed with Furries :3 i love the oh shit moments of the Pirates that pulled our convois out of Quantum travel :3 they never survived !!!
2 Size 4 CF-447 Rhino Repeaters on turrets and is considered Heavy Freight W/large components. First introduced in 2871, Drake Interplanetary’s Caterpillar has long proven to be a reliable, cost-effective multi-role vessel, capable of being outfitted for everything from mercantile operations to combat support. Long hailed as a hard-fought alternative to the ubiquitous Hull series, the Caterpillar is a freighter that doesn’t skimp on weaponry or customization.
I just upgraded to this ship yesterday, its very pretty, while i dont agree with the open door bathroom im happy with it. C2 looks like a reallife airplane boring :D
I just love this ship! Its has a size way bigger than the one I use to like, but is to imponent and have so many cool stuffs inside that I love it. Not forgeting about its modularity in the future.
Imagine it as a weapons platform. You are loading 4 fury (or even more small fighters - P52) as an attack ships, Ursa med in front (to have med bed), and now you can do ERTs and bunkers wtih 10+ people :)
Just like most designs. CIG is either terrible at designing ships or messing up on purpose to sell you "better ships" later. 02:36 I have no idea why they didnt just make it one solid door that turned into a ramp. If its designed to land on a planet, design an easy way to load it from the GROUND? 13:03 It would be better if these stairs did not go down but went straight on to the gantry way. The higher gantry would mean more space in the cargo bay and a visible dorsal spine on top of the caterpillar. Which would also look cooler. Because the catwalk is higher you can now transport fighters that can fly straight through the cargo units. Meaning they can land from both sides.
Would love that detachable ship in the future. Would be awesome if you needed to get closer to view something. Those turrets also really make a difference. I’ve been in the caterpillar about twice now and I always seem to get lost in the long alleyways 😅 Can’t imagine how the iron clad will be when it releases. Engineering in this ship will be awesome once it gets components. Wow will be awesome to have chairs. Hope they are persistent if they are kept in your ship. I give it a 9.5 out of 10. I don’t have one.
Excellent review, though you left out a few things. The cargo modules are planned to be able to be switched out with other types of modules in the future. You left out showing the entry to the front turret. And, in the command module, when you go down the ladder to the lower level, if you look to the left, there's another weapon's rack. :) Keep up the excellent ship reviews and videos!
The copilot seat is labeled like the corsair with the seat go down to the command of the tractor beam on the bottom window, but like the deployable doors of the cargo area and modularity is a dream not realized. 😢
Aesthetically, this is one of my favorite ships that I've seen so far - this and the Raft, anyway. Hopefully it'll get the quirks worked out if/when it gets retouched in the future!
I wonder how the shields will work with the command module detached? Like if you detach command module to defend the whole ship, will there be seperate shields on the module?
The gun rack in the entry area worked a patch or so ago, did you spot the other one in the command module on the lower deck? Love the Cat, its one of th4e immersive buts that does work.n I have two Cats.
I have the Pirate Pack, it came with the Cat. Its probably my least used ship. I think its OK at best. What it does excel at, IMO, is acting as a mini cargo base for a flight of Vultures, especially before the offical arrival of salvage missions. Our group managed to run a Cat with 4 Vultures, loading up the Cat with the salvage from panels or derelict C2s. It worked super well...when the game wasnt bugging or 30k-ing...also the issue that it was a pain in the butt to sell the salvage because it counted as stolen cargo...which was very dumb. Basically each bay was used for a Vulture to drop its cargo off and head back out, without needing to jocky into position and wait their turn. In almost every other metric though, I like the C2 WAAAAY more, but melted my C2 for the pirate pack.
This seems like a very cool ship. Next free fly I want to spend some quality time with it. Seems like in lore this would be the backbone of stanton and pyro trade routes.
So in 2800's there will be diesel engines onboard, now I know thanks to Drake. As a merchant vessel engineer I can confirm that inside it looks almost the same, but there is no Playboy magazines and DVDs(dedicated) in crews mess xD
Yeah, I love the caterpillar, but I'd really like to see it's modules come into play, as well as the doors extending to the ground level like they're meant too. I can't knock it though, I personally really enjoy it's design, I like it's tractor beam placement, and I'm excited for when we can disconnect the command module, I think that will be super fun... unless the marker for the modules disappears and I can't find it again... lol
When modularity finally arrives I'd like to see the doors reworked to butterfly open. Doubtful but what is a dream but hope. I think cargo rework will make this thing huge since you'll be able to stack things on the catwalk. It'll be interesting to see if they add gravitational mass to cargo. Would be fun to be able to anchor ships with certain materials.
How do you slow down if the ship was super fast with no reverse thrust to balance it? Pull a 180 and full burn, of course. The flavor of a ship like that would be too spicy, I guess; they would have to rename the ship junebug, after all the times new pilots splattered it all over the pad.
What would you recommend between the cat and the C2? You seemed more excited by the cat than you did in your C2 video. I'm doing hauling missions and need a new ship. I can't stack up my andromeda with medium hauling missions even tho I have enough scu.
The speed got reduced when they changed the flight model a few years back; after the era of the big Laranite and Agricium runs. It’s as if the neglected the Caterpillar flight ever since. The Prowler is a similar ship where flight was terrible after the earlier flight model change; but recently improved. I hope it get done speed back one day
A cargo grid on the opened bay doors would 10000% make sense. Its impossible to load the bays correctly with the tractor beam of the Cat. So a cargo grid on the OPENED doors, would solve that. You could temporarily store cargo crates on the doors with the tractor beam of the Caterpillar, so you can sort them in the cargo bay correctly then with the hand tractor beam. Something needs to happen, either with the Cat, or with the system how you put hauling contract cargo in your vessel. Because loading up the Cat is really pain in the rear end. Either ways... The Cat deserves a rework. And if you ask me she deserves it rather sooner than later.
I really like the Caterpillar BUT the elevator is too short/unusable in many situations. I wish all the cargo doors had a ramp, or at least the one at the front, that would be nice so we could use it as a second way to get in once the elevator gets us trapped again somewhere.
I feel like in the next update the Cat will have a advantage over the C2 solely in terms of how easy it will be to unload/load cargo from the elevators! But the space capacity on the c2 is just MASSIVE. It's a close call.
It looks cool and has some unique quirks, but I don't see me using it over a C2. I think if they instituted full modularity, I could find a use though.
The Cat is one of the oldest ships in SC and has been needing a rework for years. I’m hoping that when they do the Ironclad they will also rework the Cat. Fitting 32 scu boxes. Refining some of the rooms and setting up engineering gameplay. Modularity will be awesome if they can incorporate it into the Cat as originally planed.
This ship has so much potential with its modularity. At the moment, I dont fly it at all because I also have the C2, which is much better at the moment. With 3.24 it may be the better choice in some regard.
I'm a Drake fanboy. And Crusader fanboy. And Anvil fanboy. Haha ^^ my issues are all the ships lack a little something to be perfect/good, be it interior design or exterior look, and I mean that just about the look, how it should feel to live in it in-universe. It sounds sad by my current fantazy is to be working at CIG to make their ships up to my standards lol.
CIG regrettably downgraded its quantum range for 3.23. It already was quite a lot lower than the C2, but now imho it’s too low, especially when refueling isn’t always possible to broken landing pads or ppl blocking those. Used to love this ship for space trucking, more than the C2, but it now has too many issues regarding its viability. Cheers o7
I fail to understand how this is Medium Freight vs the Freelancer Max being marked as Heavy Freight... Should be the other way around, considering Medium seems to refer to values around 100 scu. If there's gonna be cargoships even much bigger, they can always still call it Very Heavy ;)
Cargo grid is considered to be bugged or massively flawed, it has many more access points for cargo than the C2 which in the future could be a real win.
people keep trying to misuse the caterpillar. They want to fill the ship with a single commodity. The way to make money is running multiple smaller contracts, using the different compartments to keep everything straight. Try that with a C2.
Loading is not great with that tractor beam placement (once the small handheld tool can't pick up huge boxes). I'm hoping for a rework of the front loading ramp - you skipped the sensors there for docking.
"You can put cargo in from right there"... No, you cannot. Both tractor beams are so horrendously placed that they could not even exist and no one would notice. There is no way to use them in their present state. But that's classic CIG.
Ok if yall are fonna run big boxes of cargo in this bad boy for the love of god do not use the front ladder to exit the ship. You will bug out and get stuck in a box when you come of the ladder. Always use the back way and go through the engine room.
Totally understand that point of view. I hope we see those features rather soon, till then this ship preforms as a cargo hauler quite well! But at the same time the Hercules took its spotlight.
@@EvenLease44 Hercules took the spotlight from almost everything. Number of times you see Herc as top tier for almost every game loop has made majority of the fleet redundant outside of single seaters for PVP.
Yeah… the power creep on the cat was heavy with the herc. It almost comes down to manufacture preference, as the C2 currently outperforms the Caterpillar. I wonder what will they do to put the caterpillar more in line.
@@EvenLease44 Detachable command ship and modules, then it really would fulfill its darker role as the ultimate Pirate ship. Anyway thanks for the content, first rate as always.

The Prowler is a similar ship where flight was terrible after the earlier flight model change; but recently improved. I hope it get done speed back one day
put a mirai fury in each cargo slot, and you got a makeshift carrier lol
If the Cat ever gets its modularity it will be great.
Drake.
The brand geriatrics trust! 👍
And if you ask me she deserves it rather sooner than later.
if we ever get modularity for it then it will be truly amazing.
Drake doesn't expect you to be 80. They know who they are making these ships for. They expect you to be drunk.
They changed the detach thing a bit ago I believe, it’s no longer the plan for it to be possible
Ships needing reworks yet hundreds of ships not released yet sold years ago. Are we sure this alpha will ever rekeas?
Crazy that the cat is now considered medium size
This ship has so much potential with its modularity.
At the moment, I dont fly it at all because I also have the C2, which is much better at the moment.
With 3.24 it may be the better choice in some regard.
It's the cargo truck of the universe
Nothing quite like the cat
8 bed, 2 bath, rustic fixer upper.
My favorite ship. Unfortunately with 3.24 it seems like solo hauling is now out of the picture, so I'm going to melt it.
Autoload full Catp 21 Mins on load and 21 mins on unload, manual load is for me impossible. This ship needs tons of love now
My favorite ship in game, if anyone have 330$ I'll be glade to relieve you of it 😁
Doesn't the bow door drop all the way down as a ramp?
CIG regrettably downgraded its quantum range for 3.23. It already was quite a lot lower than the C2, but now imho it’s too low, especially when refueling isn’t always possible to broken landing pads or ppl blocking those. Used to love this ship for space trucking, more than the C2, but it now has too many issues regarding its viability. Cheers o7
It's labeled heavy freight on the website
I go based off Erkul as it tends to be more inline and updated with the current stats.
I fail to understand how this is Medium Freight vs the Freelancer Max being marked as Heavy Freight... Should be the other way around, considering Medium seems to refer to values around 100 scu.
If there's gonna be cargoships even much bigger, they can always still call it Very Heavy ;)
Seems none of the comments have seen the cargo grid the insane amount of 2SCU boxes surrounded by 24s and this is better loading than a C2?
Cargo grid is considered to be bugged or massively flawed, it has many more access points for cargo than the C2 which in the future could be a real win.
I hate trying to find stuff in this ship in the crashed ship missions
people keep trying to misuse the caterpillar. They want to fill the ship with a single commodity. The way to make money is running multiple smaller contracts, using the different compartments to keep everything straight. Try that with a C2.
Yeeeey caterpillar
Loading is not great with that tractor beam placement (once the small handheld tool can't pick up huge boxes).
I'm hoping for a rework of the front loading ramp - you skipped the sensors there for docking.
"You can put cargo in from right there"... No, you cannot. Both tractor beams are so horrendously placed that they could not even exist and no one would notice. There is no way to use them in their present state. But that's classic CIG.
I feel like if I can get 1600scu on a reclaimer I can get 800 on a cat.
Medium cargo hauler? You mean large Fury carrier
I own the pirate cat
wow the elevator worked long enough to do a review lol
I wish I can use this ship for fight
Very likely my favourite ship in the game. It’s stupid slow, bulky, buggy and 100% Drake 😄
Ok if yall are fonna run big boxes of cargo in this bad boy for the love of god do not use the front ladder to exit the ship. You will bug out and get stuck in a box when you come of the ladder. Always use the back way and go through the engine room.
Until it receives the features as advertised it's average at best.
