Those ones you couldn’t identify were indeed JU-88’s. Judging by the livery they were using those were supposed to be early night fighter variants without radar. My JU-88 history is a bit rusty, but the ones in your video looked like they also had the 75mm installed for ground attack roles, which I don’t think was something Germany ever tried with the night fighter variants. When they tried it on the ground attack versions they found that the 75mm cracked the airframe relatively quickly. Like planes got grounded for structural repairs after only 10 sorties. The experiment with trying to put 75mm canons on planes didn’t last very long lol.
@@arandomvideoman3848 yes it did. Not sure if it made it every production model but, they did indeed make one for the 262. The seat was also going to be used in the Ho-229 and Dornier 335. The big problem with that seat was, it was notoriously unreliable. It used a tension spring mechanism to eject the pilot clear of the aircraft he would be bailing from. The Germans also tried a compressed air version but, it was even more unreliable and added a lot of weight.
Never knew Germany attempted to make ejection seats, only ever heard of the Martin Baker ejection seats, after his best mate died while flight testing the fighter plane Martin baker created
You've found convergence range in this video and it makes me so happy. The gunsights of WWII were designed to assist with ranging: An aircraft with a 30-foot wingspan (which covers most single-engine fighters) will occupy a 50mil arc (just shy of 3 degrees) of your field of view when it is 200 yards away. The P-51D used one of two gunsights during WWII, either the N-9, or the K-14 gyroscopic sight. The N-9 and fixed ring of the K-14 both had reticles that were calibrated to 70mil diameter. So if the wingtips of your 30-foot wingspan target spans the full reticle, (assuming you're not viewing him at an oblique angle so you're getting the true span) you can tell at a glance that he's just over 150 yards away. There's also ways to calculate the amount of lead to give a target using the gunsight based on your target's airspeed and your angle off tail, (and some, like the Mk.8 used in most US Navy aircraft and some P-47s, even had "ladders" with hashmarks every 5 or so mils) but that's a LOT more math than I can handle.
I love seeing the IL2 stuff. I think the career mode would be a big hit for your channel. I would love getting invested in a pilot that you are flying and I think most people would agree
The Ju 88 had at least four different nose designs if I recall correctly. The bomber variants had a glass nose with a bombadier position. The fighter variants had a metal nose with more machine guns. The night fighter variants had two different radar equipped noses. Note the qualifier, "if I recall correctly."
That Ju-52 you shot down starting around 4:30 was actually Hitler's personal transport, or at least done up like it! Named Immelmann II, registration D-2600. He wouldn't have been using it at this point in the war though, it was replaced by a FW-200 Condor in 1939 though he kept the Ju-52 as a backup.
@@bobsakamanos4469Because that would be the only chance he had to shoot it down . 51 pilots would head to the nearest german airfield the moment they saw a 262 and just wait for it to come land
GS is the most dreaded pilot of every crew chief. He does deliver the kills, but ground crew lives on black coffee the consistency of tar and whatever can be chewed while turning spanners with a vengeance: "Like, could you PLEASE only kill 8 guys, and call it a day, instead of going for 11 and bringing home a flying coffin?".
Absolutely keep the WW2 content coming! I think the engineering during that time period is wonderful to explore. And the nature of dogfighting in that era is what shows true skill!
One of the things that is amazing to me about WW2, is that sorties like this were totally possible, with limited radar, and areas of the front line not ever paid attention to. You just have these moments of random battles taking place everywhere. So interesting.
We had to do speeches in grade school in the 70's. I did mine about the Mustang P51D. I would dream of being a fighter pilot in those awesome machines. Keep the WW2 stuff coming!
You said to let you know so I am….. I absolutely LOVE the WWII content. It is honestly my favorite of all of the content you do. As cool as modern fights are, BVR can get a little slow in video form when 85% of the fight is just notching while the warning systems are blaring. It’s always cool to see what could happen if modern opponents crossed paths in a guns hot scenario, but nothing is more fun to watch that the old machines where it’s all about getting on someone’s six and pumping them full of lead. In those old birds there are no countermeasures or stealth systems to save you, it’s all on the pilot to keep their six clear and their energy state high, it doesn’t get any more exciting to watch than that.
At 6:00 you shot down a night fighter Ju-88. Its painted black or dark grey and its got all kinds of guns in the nose. All thats missing is the " Hirschgeweih" ( or bucks antlers in english) eight-dipole aerials for the radar set up, which cause huge drag so they were left off in day time.
Are you saying that the aerials were easily removable so the Ju-88 could be quickly swapped between bomber and night fighter configurations? If that's the case, that's a bit of trivia I've never heard before.
That was not the night fighter version, that was the day interceptor. The night fighter had more then just the antennae on the front of the nose, it had a lot more equipment that made it slightly heavier.

Thank you very much for your efforts! I love your series. I have both DCS, with almost all of the aircraft, and IL-2 with most, if not all of the great battles series and Flying Circus I, II, and III. I must admit, that even in DCS, when I was born, the P-51was still a frontline fighter (although it was redesignated to F-51), and the F-86 entered into service a few years later. The recips and F-86 era jets are STILL my favorite aircraft . I guess it’s just the nostalgia of my youth and time in the USMC. The early Me 262 equipped units were drawn from disbanded bomber squadrons. These pilots, not understanding fighter tactics (at all), got butchered since they couldn't cope with high speeds and would slow down to aim more easily, thus the P38s/47s/51s easily pounced and shot them down.
