Working as a flooring installer and I'm the "new guy" that hasn't learned stairs yet. I was the only one on today's job and it turned out to have stairs so of course I came to UA-cam to try to learn. This made it so easy to understand
I found this video so soothing and it made me laugh. Thank you for making carpeting the stairs seem so achievable. The music made it 😂 explanation of what you have to do was really good.
We followed your instructions, and the stairs look amazing!!!! Thank you so much!!! We wouldn't have been able to do it without you! I love the music too! 😁
Great video After watching this clip I relaid our stair carpet as the person who laid it was a right cowboy it turned out just like the stair carpet in the video. Tip always make sure you have a shape blade when cutting carpet as it makes the job so much easier.
That Beethoven was an amazing choice of music. All home improvement videos should have classical music. Watching carpet get tucked in is very therapeutic and the music made it even more so
You fit the carpet to the stairs in one piece just using carpet grippers and No electric staples. Starting from the bottom fold 6”up against riser tack it at the fold along the riser at the floor. Then stretch the carpet up each step and using a stair tool(bolster) push the carpet into the gripper continue up the stairs towards the top. This way of fitting allows you to take up the stairs after a few years and using the 6” of carpet folded under the bottom riser shift the carpet up the stairs to allow the carpet on the riser(which has not been trodden on) to move up a bit onto the tread on avoid wearing on the stairs nosing
If that the nearest you've seen, you must employ some really shit fitters. I've been in this trade for 43 years and I would never employ a shit fitter like this guy.
Nice video also enjoyed your choice of music, helped me relax and acculy have patience to watch the whole thing, you looked like a artist at work great job
@@paulmarclalonde3834 I mean , for a start Hes left zero gap between the gripper and the wall … means zero expansion , which potentially could lead to the carpet lifting , carpet lifting on stairs isn’t the safest …

Installed down (top to bottom) contored nose you don't need tack strips. Water fall installed up (bottom to top) with stretcher uses tack strips and no staples. Just would have saved some time and materials.
Typical US style, in my 30 years fitting I’ve done this method probably 3 times a year . Waterfall method is the only way imo . Unless the customer states otherwise. Buckingham Palace has waterfall style after all if it’s good enough for Her Maj 😂
Tony Bennett must cost him a fortune in staples as well, I’ve fitted stairs like this once, waterfall method every time. Much quicker and in my opinion looks better
Fuck ya buddy great video. I have done several rooms myself but I was feeling a bit timid about doing the stairs. Watched the video a few times and went to work. They turned out good. We're putting the house up for sale but the carpet was old and an eye sore. Did 4 bedrooms the stairs and a living room for under 800 bucks. Bought a lot of tools and rented a few to. I usually don't do harbor freight but they saved me a bunch of money on stuff I won't use often.
Great looking finish and easy to follow for a newbie like myself, can u please advise me on the size of staples used and also explain why you used the hammer stapler at times instead of just the electric one ? Thanks in advance, I'm going to purchase one and wondered why or if I'd need the hammer one.
No where on the headline dose it say on your instaling "French cap" to these set of stairs. That would explain no gripper on the riser and only underlay cut just over the nose. It's a style of carpeting on very rarely seen due to time and expense. We only offer it if the customer wants stripes and full colour. You can put it how ever you want. Looks wicked when complete.
@Paul Sebastian Schiller wrote the poem. I don't know if it ever would have gone anywhere without musical accompaniment. However, I am equally certain that it would make for poor recitation during stair carpeting.
Just double checking, you put a carpet smooth on the front face of the rise on the top step only, is that correct? I'm refitting carpet on our stairs and the previous person added a smooth on the rise and the tread all the way down, (so each of our steps has two smooths, like your top step). Would you recommend ripping out the excess smooths or have you fitted carpet like that with smooths on the rise and tread?
I only put it on the top because there was no nosing, if you are doing them waterfall then a strip on the riser is needed, but if you are doing them this way they're not needed and can be removed.
Gripper to the riser, screw if mdf, waterfall pads and carpet, bit of spray adhesive on the tread helps as well. This method shown here would do a treat for felt back rental jobs or oap where the steps need to be defined
Is there something in your process that can insure the freshly cut carpet edges along both sides up and down the stairs will not fray or pull away over the years to come?
Like i said different strokes for different folks.I lean into kicker for a nice even stretch.I worked with a guy,who installed top down. When we’d go back for another room to do,his step work would have bubs in the width. So im not sold on the staple head giving a proper stretch.Good day ✌🏻
Carpet on stairs is not done in one shot. For example a 5 ft long piece may cover about 4 steps. As you can see at his second riser from the bottom the carpet didn’t have enough length (hence why he shook his finger at 6:01) to reach so he simply cut that stair off and cut another piece of carpet to cover the bottom two steps. You cannot see the seams because they meet in the crouch of the stair where it makes the L shape.
Also sometimes the width on the treads are different sizes forcing you to have to cut a different width of carpet every couple stairs. But this doesn’t seem to be the case here. It is important to measure each tread to check if they are uniform or not. It is very easy to cut carpet short on stairs and then you have gaps on your sides which cannot be fixed, so you want to be very careful. Don’t be afraid to go a little wider than you need, it can always be cut down more or tucked in.
Why do you have a tack strip on the riser above the first tread you do? It didn’t look like you did that with the rest. I am tackling my stairs and your video was very helpful. I was just wondering about the tack strip. Thanks for the helpful video.
B Kelly when there's a landing or a room with carpet above the stairs I finish the top riser when installing the landing or room. And when there is no lip for the the carpet to be stapled onto I add a strip to hook it to which holds the stretch. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps.
If the top step is different to the rest and you need to and gripper to it. Why didn’t you do this to the rest of the stairs so they all look the same. It would look a lot neater
If you’re going to work from top down I suggest a stair stretcher. Unless waterfalling. Not a bad method I’ve seen a few old timers do it this way. And let’s be real this carpet is the easiest and best for stairs! 😂
mathbles703 length was too short. it probably makes more sense to cut his carpet 4' along the width which is typically 12'. this method might ensure the least amount if product waste
Robert Watson you don't staple the sides in that method. Only the back edge. You get plenty of stretch side to side off the single row of strip. No need for strip on sides imo.

Hi what tool did you use on the stairs was it a nail gun or staples
Electric stapler, with 54 series fine wire staples 9/16” length.
What kind of nailer or crown stapler are you using? Also what size of staples are you using or should a diyer carpet installer shoot for.
Nice video and nice muscles 💪
