- 10,000 Maniacs with Mary Ramsey (Natalie Merchant no longer with the band - but Mary was wonderful) performing "Because the Night", originally written by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith, at the Norwalk Oyster Festival in Norwalk, CT on 9/11/2010. "Because the Night" kicks in after the violin/vocal intro at about 2:37 into the video so be patient. 10,000 Maniacs is: Steven Gustafson, Dennis Drew, Mary Ramsey, Jeff Erickson, Jerry Augustyniak
Beautiful song. Brings tears.
Haven't seen the band since the '80s so this was a real treat. Thanks for a great show.
😂 I wasn't exactly down with this at first but then it started to grow on me. And I REALLY❤ like this chick, hadn't heard of her before.😊
Thanks. What a fun gig this was. We had a great time.
Wow! Mary Ramsey rocks! The band too!
Yeah I am an insame Natalie fan... but give credit where due.. On this tune Mary SHINES! She brings forth every Gypsy tragedy with her violin and then in Because the Night just makes me cry. Something to be said about getting above and beyond your own ego... and as much as I listen still and love Natalie.. it was always HER singing in an ego way. Marry lies with Angels on this one!!
Saw them over the weekend. They are amazing live, Mary is fantastic. She has been with the Maniacs longer than Natalie. Love the original too but it isnt better.
@astenis1 It's an old English ballad called "The Cruel Mother" and dates back to the 1600s.
great start :D
Many old timers say that baseball sounds better when listened to on short wave or AM, many people say that rock n roll sounds better when listened to on vinyl. I would say that live music is much better when watched from a cell phone recording.
Not sure I'm digging the Maniacs being an Irish Folk band just yet but she sounds a lot like Natalie, not a bad go at it.
Nice to Skeletor doing great in his new career.
does anyone know if the song she is doing before, Before The Night is called Son,Oh Son? To me, it sounds just like it...it is an old folk song that was done by Boiled in Lead on the Orb album....
@mixhaelamikovich so there's a little box at the top of most any UA-cam web page. You click in it and type NATALIE then click the search (magnifying glass) icon. There you go - lots of NATALIE to enjoy.
I love this version especially the violin. are there more like it?
Thanks Jim - l love the violin also. I don't have any more videos of them but most likely you could find more here on UA-cam - probably better than mine. My camera wasn't so great 6 years ago.
What song does she start playing at the beginning?
Taste is subjective. I prefer this version by far.
@4thatfilm Agreed!
Mary Ramsey is great all by herself...all you guys can live in Comparison Hell and rot but i'll gladly live in the present and visit the past
But this is the past.
@@saraheart2804 Thank you for knowing that.

GREAT comment!!!!!!!!
I like as Irish folk band. She is very good at it. Almost Irish too
Thanks Mr
@z00mar0D nobody "replaced" Natalie's excellent version. Go listen to her excellent version. This is just another version.
@pillbox1987 i am not mean ( not really) but I was a bit harsh...
I love natalie and no one can touch ehr voice... I remember the time I ehard this on the radio,and Natalie singing... I can't listen to anyone else sing it.
Saw them over the weekend. They are amazing live, Mary is fantastic. She has been with the Maniacs longer than Natalie. Love the original too but it isnt better.
This video does not do it justice.
I get it the witching hour
Nice performance by Mary.. credits to her.. but i rather want Natalie singing this song...
This is not "Because the Night" _I was very sad_ to hear Natalie left the group.
@@owenandrewmusic it was a typo on my tired self. My writing, _I was_ was left out of the beginning.
@LLPinney1969 at least your comment was cute and not mean spirited like some others :-)
@Broadsidejohn
I put it back (the one that is gone, I had it - check my channel)
Mary is the 21st Century.
Natalie is the 20th Century.
Mary is obviously very talented and at this point has been a Maniac longer than Natalie was. However, without Natalie, the Maniacs are really not the Maniacs. The might be 9,999 maniacs; just not 10,000.
@mintgumdropz1 why so mean
She is just as good of a singer just a different voice and a really crappy recording!
Ela é boa, mas a Natalie é mais, e eu sinto falta da versão acústica dela em Because the Night.
nice interpretation but lacks what Patti smith did ...the queen goddess of punk owns this song !
Personally I like this woman's voice better than Ms. Merchant's. I always thought that Ms. Merchant was a little too impressed with herself---to the point of boorishness.
Sorry to say this but types of songs like this belongs to NATALIE MERCHANT
She sounds bored. Her singing lacks passion in this particular recording.
this sounds like crap......... to bad too it's a great video
NOT NATALIE!!!!
no natalie but not bad.
What is this, some bad joke?
epic fail....
Sadly, the song really doesn't suit her style. Much better than Springstein's--but not even close to Merchant's or Smith's.
I didn't like it at all.
Stop screwing around ...can't touch Natalie. I want those minutes back that I listened to this broad strangle her chin cat.
