My mom was a part of the Jersey Shore scene back in the day. Had many mutual friends and more with Bruce. She thought he was an incredible talent, but felt he thought he was God's gift to women...and every time I see this video, I think, well, where is the lie?! Isn't he? 😂 What couldn't that man do! Incredible songwriter, guitarist, lyricist with movie star good looks and a 🍑 that perfectly creased those Levi's. They didn't call him The Boss for nothin'. 🥰

I saw him in 1980 in the rain at Red Rocks.
It was a miserable experience, (I was not prepared for the cold rain in august and less than 10 years old), I was cold and miserable but that was my first rock concert and Springsteen set the bar so high it has never been met.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band recorded "Because the Night" at Atlantic Studios, New York on June 1, 1977, the first day of sessions for Darkness on the Edge of Town, though the lyrics only consisted of the song title and some mumbling. Springsteen struggled with the song almost four months until his engineer, Jimmy Iovine, got involved. At the time, Iovine was also producing the album Easter for Patti Smith at the Record Plant, New York, where Darkness was being recorded at the same time.
Iovine says, "Now, Bruce was very understanding and very flexible, because he realized that this was my first real break as a producer. Anyway, one night whilst we were lounging around the Hotel Navarro in New York I told Bruce I desperately wanted a hit with Patti, that she deserved one. He agreed. As he had no immediate plans to put ‘Because the Night’ on an album, I said why not give it to Patti. Bruce replied, ‘If she can do it, she can have it.’"
Springsteen later admitted he was not satisfied with the song, and he already knew he wasn't going to finish it since it was "a[nother] love song";.[4] Iovine brought Smith the last recording by Springsteen, from September 27, 1977. Smith added her own lyrics, recorded it for her album Easter, and scored her first and biggest hit single.
The song was first performed live at a Patti Smith concert at CBGB's in New York City on December 30, 1977 (Patti's 31st birthday) with Springsteen joining on vocals and guitar.[5] Though it was never released on any of Springsteen's studio albums, in concert beginning with his Darkness Tour Springsteen would often perform the song with his own lyrics. To date, he has performed it 503 times in concert.[6]
The only two commercially released recordings of a Springsteen version of the song were in the 1986 box set Live/1975-85, where Smith was listed as co-writer; and the 2010 compilation album The Promise (using the original recording from the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions, but using Smith's lyrics).

@@Euegoria Yes, she co-wrote her version, but they didn't write it together. Springsteen originally wrote it while writing the Darkness on the Edge of Town record. The reason that didn't make the record wasn't that it wasn't good enough, but he felt like it didn't go with the rest of the songs on the record.

I read a good article in Billboard Magazine from about 2018 recently. About Patty Smith's recording of this song (with her changes to some lyrics). I was happy to see she repeatedly called it BRUCE'S song, his gift to her. She gushed about Bruce in the article and his song writing skills. I knew it pretty much made her career but it turns out it totally changed her life- and continues to. Bruce had already written two songs specifically for her to record but she had declined them both. But he gave her his recording of this song and and the very first time she ever heard it she new instantly that it was going to be a hit. She was just unsure about whether or not she wanted to have a hit record with a song she had not written herself. So she spent a couple of hours changing some of the lyrics and the next day she decided to put it on her album. It ended up making her famous and giving her and her band it's first financial success.

Never forget seeing Bruce for the first time in September of 78 on the Darkness tour. I went into the show with great admiration for him as a songwriter but as a guitarist? Not so much! That night he blew the roof off the arena with this song and of course the Darkness tour version of "Prove it all night". I left the show with a greater respect for the man as a guitarist

I discovered this version last year, and I'm frequently coming back just for the intro. It's pure magic and I lack of finding a proper word to describe how I'm feeling listening to this

Wheeewweee can I ever relate to this comment, I've replayed it the entire night to myself since I just discovered it. It's 2:30 AM and went to my car because I can't get it loud enough in the house, folks are sleepy but I just can't help but feel the music, it's too beautiful for the entire world to not hear, if I had speakers that loud, I'd get em right where they needed to be to share the sounds of such beautiful soul ❤️

The was a pretty good guitar solo - not over played, simple, matches the enegergy of the song rather than pushing technical ability. Love that.

Can come back to this song over and over. When Bruce breaks into the solo at 5:08 it looks like a musical display and showcase for the whole universe representative of what members of the the human species are so amazingly capable of. Like we came a long way on this blue rock to rock out to our deepest of heartfelt emotions.

OMG absolutely brilliant guitar solo by The Boss but is that Roy Bittan on the piano? Freakin' 3 minutes of nonstop playing and he doesn't miss a beat. I've had this intro on repeat for at least a week now. Never gets old. 🎤🎧🎹🎸🎼
