- Sony vs. Lumix: Which Camera Should You Choose? 🎥
I tested both the Sony and Lumix cameras extensively, and while I ended up keeping the Sony, I firmly believe 99% of people should choose the Lumix. In this video, I break down the differences between these two powerhouse brands, comparing features, video performance, photo quality, usability, and overall value.
Whether you’re a filmmaker, content creator, or hobbyist, this guide will help you make the right choice for your needs. Don’t make an expensive mistake - watch before you buy!
Of course Lumix is better. If Panasonic knew what marketing is, they could have eliminate the competition.
On the constant preview issue, what is going on is it's a remnant of the DFD contrast detection system before they implemented the hybrid phase detect. It alters the image to ensure it's getting enough contrast to grab focus, being back when it was contrast only this had to be done physically in camera and therefore can't just be removed. My guess is the Hybrid system lumix has developed still leverages that element of the contrast detect and they havent worked out how to remove it yet, possible it would require them to completely overhaul the whole system.
I have been shooting Lumix for the years and as a result its never been an issue for me because you just come to know that is going to happen and you set your settings correctly before taking the image. Ways to minimise the issue until or if they ever fix it, I'm not sure how you take images but a good habit to get into is dont half press the shutter or activate your focus until you're ready to shoot. Some people hold down the shutter at half to keep continuous focus and therefore forget their exposure settings. There's no reason to do this in most situations, perhaps wildlife and sports would be an exception, if the camera can see your subject it will grab focus when you take the photo if you're very out of focus just quickly half press to grab a rough focus, frame and then focus-shoot.
It's not perfect but as I have been doing this for a long time, I can say confidently you get used to it eventually
Thank you for this! I felt like I was going crazy trying to figure it out. It definitely is something I think I could get used to but just threw me off so hard when I was trying to do my first photoshoot with the camera.
I just use the exposure meter.. if it's 1 I know what to expect
I started with the GH5 years ago. Switched to Sony for the AF. Now, I have the LUMIX S5ii. I have never been happier. To me, the colors and the skin tones of the S5ii are the most accurate of any camera I've had before. The only issues I've seen with AF in the S5ii/x is most often caused by poor lighting. Anyway, I'm sticking with my S5ii. If I do get something else, it will most likely be the Canon C80. Mainly because I think Canon is the only other brand that captures good skin tones, etc. Anyway, thanks for the comparison.
P.S. I'm a filmmaker. So, I don't worry about photo features as much.
I haven't tested them for actual color accuracy but as far as skin tones I like both of them. I actually prefer the sony for skin over the lumix but it could just be how used to Sony I am.
I also started with the GH5 and moved to Sony for the AF (a7siii) . I am also a videographer and I am very impressed with the s5iix features. I am seriously considering going back to Lumix but I am waiting for something without a crop in 4K60. I am hoping that the next s5 release or maybe even the s1h will shoot 4K60 without a crop because I shoot a lot of 4K60. So I am bidding my time to see what Lumix does next.
I used to be a Sony shooter since Minolta / A-Mount and my latest Sony was the 7RIII.
I moved to the S5D (got that with the 18-40 for 870 EUR) and S9 and I dont miss anything. The S9 is such a great camera and there are so many lightweight first party lenses I feel like shooting MicroFourThirds without sacrifying image quality.
And I really like the 28-200 Macro lens for lightweight traveling - dual IBIS, Hybrid Zoom and High Res mode as well as great close up capabilities. So versatile!
I am currently in sony , using a A7C as of now , got a bunch of lenses , i do feel restricted , i was primarily a photographer and have developped a look that i want and i am not really able to achieve the same on the video , currently i am thinking about switching to S5IIX I will be renting it and try it out , more than likely its not SLOG that holds me back , but more likely its the dynamic range and the 8 bit footage that breaks apart. i will be waiting till both sony and panasonics launches during CP+ and NAB and then rent it out and see what my upgrade path looks like
Although the worst part about SONY is that they dont do firm ware , A7C has a frame marker in videos but wont shop in custom modes unless you start shooting the video , how am i supposed to frame and compose ? by recoding a video while i am setting things up ? lol and they dont even have that on PHOTOS
Say no to client work for two weeks. We have that option as business owners. Learn the system and slowly move over instead of all at once! Make your bank account like you again!
I am going to make an update soon. I couldn't do it. I kept the S9 and re purchased the S5iiX and just let my bank account cry for a couple days. lol
I was right where you are 😅 I ended up moving to LUMIX for the Open Gate, Anamorphic Features (I’m heavy on Anamorphic now, absolutely Beautiful images coming out of these things), the IBIS because 85% of work is handheld and the new Real Time LUT weirdly enough. Ended up with 2 - S5 IIX, 2 - S5 II & recently the S9 (for work and EDC) and 10 Lenses.
It was cool to hear your reasoning. Wishing you Much Success Bro.
Thank you. Lol I am literally rebuying the S5iiX today. I can't stay away. They might have got me hooked.
Keep the S5IIX
Im thinking about it heavily!
@@JERRYTALKSHOP believe me, its worth keeping with updates and all 👀
I'm a hobbyist and like year I compared SO MANY cameras before deciding to buy the Panasonic Lumix S5 II X - my first serious camera!
It's not perfect and, many times, I was very, very, very close to buy another model. But I believe that buying a S5 II/X/S9 is a sign that one took the time to get informed, and is wise.
The S5 II/X/S9 should be considered a reference/classic in the future.
It is a very well rounded and thought out camera. And the price just makes it hard to overlook.

@@bruceebe I’m not mad about it 🔥
refreshing to hear an unbiased opinion that's not all about Sony, It could literally be any other camera 9 /10 videos on youtube are Sony, and bias
I appreciate that. Thank you. No need to be a fan boy. Cameras are just tools for a job.
I got the LUMIX s9 because I am new to videography. I am not a professional and I was able to get the s9 brand new for $1,399 that came with the 20-60 lens. I still bought the 50mm 1.8.
That is a crazy deal!
Colors made me crazy on the Sony. I found the Lumix V-Log super easy to work with, and over all colors much more natural.
lol I feel the exact opposite. I am so used to working with Sony that the Lumix skin tones feel washed out to me
I chose the Lumix S5II and happy with it, but never used open gate.. I agree with you that if you want to do something for 2 platforms, then I frame it so I can use the same footage, openg gate will not make it easier.
100%
Lumix has frame guides, which makes Open Gate a lot easier imo
@@nerucheung This is true. Sony has frame guides as well that I use for 9:16 when needed but most of the time I just turn the camera if I am shooting for a video that I know will be vertical
Two point:
- Shutter angle
-IBIS
They’re both missing in FX3
On the other hand S5iiX crop at 60fps (unfortunately) but for the quality both photography and videos is incredible
@@Albevisuals FX3 has both shutter angle and IBIS. Granted the ibis isn’t as good as the S5iiX. But it’s good enough for most things.
@ oh my bad. I swear I heard someone saying that here in YT. Never owned Sony but pretty satisfied with my LUMIX S5iiX for both photography and video. Really underrated camera
@@Albevisuals it’s a great camera for sure
i own a lumix s5ii i couldnt wait to to get it so opted out for the x not really much difference, i love it having shuter angle and not having to think about all those issue, one of my favorite features is when i half press it allows for focus peeking so i have the subject in focus in auto focus mode which idk if all cameras have that buts its amazing, currently rocking the 24-105, 50, and 24mm hoping one day to get a monitor for it though i hear its laggy sad but hey cant beat the price especially aas a college student.
You can fix the monitor being laggy feature by turning off audio over hdmi and either record audio separately or record into your monitor. I love shutter angle as well. Luckily sony added shutter angle into the FX3 and FX30 recently.
@@JERRYTALKSHOP appreciatte that!

I personally have used both the fx3 and S5iix as well and ultimately decided on the S5iix. I don’t need the best autofocus but just good enough for testimonials and etc. when it comes to framing for socials the open gate feature is very nice because when I put it in a vertical timeline I’m basically done. Small tweaks but nothing too heavy. So that saves a lot of time for me and if I have a wide lens and turn the camera around now the top and bottom of the image are distorted instead of the sides so it’s even more annoying. Really enjoying the S5iix so far 😊
100% if you are more often then not wanting the same footage to be used as horizontal and vertical then open gate is hugely valuable. Typically I am never shooting for both at once outside of podcasts and for that I just back the camera up a bit if I don't have open gate and we are good to go. S5iiX is an amazing camera and the price is hard to compete with.
@@JERRYTALKSHOPyeah. All comes down to personal preference. I like shooting for both so I can pick and choose in post which format and lately I’ve been including vertical content in horizontal projects in a certain style so been digging that flexibility but 💯 %. Right tool for the right job
You can actually use any Lumix as a webcam via USB, it only works in windows at the moment, you’ll need a Lumix app I forgot the name of. But it’s also available for Mac, but for some reason you need to get into the bios and change something in order for it to work. Otherwise… if you own a mac, a capture card is the best option.
@@waynealejo yeah the requiring software to stream is terrible, causes terrible latency and stability issues and unnecessary computer resources and gives the computer trouble with what software can easily use the webcam. This is true for both Lumix and Sony. UVC is 100% the way to go. If not I think a capture card is the only other stable viable way.
About the photo problem... You have to use numbers to get the exposure correctly... I've messed with all the settings... Nothing changes
Makes sense thank you! I felt like I was going crazy!
My Panasonic s5 shows me the image settings in real time. It's true the constant preview sometimes turns itself off, but I have a dedicated button for it.
I guess it’s a hardware function from their old autofocus system that had to adjust exposure to grab focus. So there is nothing they can be done about it. Not a deal breaker but annoying when coming from other systems like Sony A7RV etc
@ oh I agree.
Yes you can't just plug in the s5iix as a webcam but you don't need a capture card for it either. You can actually do IP streaming directly from the camera. You can use the Lumix Sync app to do wireless streaming, this will be limited to 1080P. You can use the same app and tether from your phone, I think that one is limited to 1440P. You can get a USB to ethernet dongle for the highest quality 4K60P.
Yes, but all of these are more complicated, less stable and require more steps to do then just plug in usb and you’re good to go. Not to mention the latency on all the IP streaming and dongle streaming through the network. It is in no way perfect or comparable to UVC. I’m very confident Lumix will add UVC soon and everyone will praise the update
@JERRYTALKSHOP I hope they do add it because it would simplify everything so much. Wireless streaming through the app is fairly easy though, the other methods have a longer setup.
💯
Sony is hard to quit. Im a noob with an a7iv and a fx30. The s5iix is quite nice.....but its just so hard to switch systems especially when im mostly a photographer. If money was no object this wouldnt even be a conversation but it is a thing lol. Then throw a nikon z8 into the equation im locked hard into analysis paralysis lol
@@nomadikmind3979 I haven’t looked much into the z8 yet. I have been doing this for over a decade and have never considered Nikon lol which is probably just my own bias.
@@JERRYTALKSHOP lol well they used to suck at video for sure. Thats why i ditched my d7200. But the images out of it, and the body, just were something else. But I wanted better autofocus for candid documentary type stuff and switched to sony. But nikon does something special with the colors and microcontrasts in my opinion, and now that the z8 is super capable, its hard to pick which to stay with
Thanks for the video. If you are thinking of shooting anamorphic then it might be good to keep the S5 IIX around. Besides the un-cropped 4K 60 and the 4K 120 that FX3 / a7S III etc have, they also have the ability to use a Sony dongle to record timecode as Metadata, something the S5 IIX and S9 lack :(
Also, it seems that a lot of production agencies want their camera operators to shoot with Sony. They are just set up to edit with and grade Sony footage. I don't know if it has something to do with Sony's file container or something else???
I do shoot on Lumix but would have bought one of those Sony 12MP ZV bodies if it had two card slots and didn't overheat. I might get a used a7S Iii or an FX30 or an a7 IV and just shoot in crop mode...
100% for anamorphic the Lumix system is better implemented for sure. Luckily I am not working with many production companies anymore but you are 100% right that they typically want Sony or Red cameras. My favorite camera ever is the ZVE1 but its over heating issues (which rarely occurs) is not something I could count on professionally and would never recommend it for that. But for a content camera the zve1 and the lumix s9 are amazing. And probably a good video to make comparing them.
I completely understand!!!
I keep thinking of trading in my sony gear and getting the S5iix.
Better IBIS and BRAW. Worse Rolling Shutter and crop at 60fps! The dilemma !! Lol
I am going to make an update soon. I couldn't do it. I kept the S9 and re purchased the S5iiX and just let my bank account cry for a couple days. lol
thought about testing or using the gh7?
@@rupivisuals I’ve honestly never tried a micro four thirds sensor. I’d be down to test one and see how it goes though
@@JERRYTALKSHOP gets way too much hate imo. Smaller and cheaper bodies and lenses. The fact that the gh7 can record 4k 120, aswell as shoot prores raw for under 2k is crazy
@ I’ll check out some videos on it! Does the 4k 120p have an additional crop?
@@JERRYTALKSHOP Very minor crop unfortunately, I personally rarely notice it though. I see the gh7 as a great filmmaking camera, while the S series great videography cameras.
@@rupivisuals there is no crop on 4k120p
If we don’t watch your video, we’re gonna make the wrong choice… Is this supposed to be like a scare tactic. That’s the stupidest title I’ve ever heard. We can actually figure this out on our own. We can rent both cameras and test the footage. What a brilliant idea.

Ich habe meine Sony a7riii verkauft und werde jetzt die lumix s5ii kaufen bin so gespannt 🤩
Das ist großartig! Ich hoffe, Sie haben Freude an der neuen Kamera.
You can already use the S9 and S5II as webcams, you just have to download the Lumix Webcam Software first. Once that's installed you can just connect your camera and choose tether mode and it will appear as a webcam.
I tested that and it was so far from functional in my opinion that it wasn't a viable option. Stuck you to 720p. Had terrible lag and desync over time. Unstable with OBS or meetings. Definitely nothing like the uvc webcam implementation in Sony. Something that I think Lumix could easily solve with a firmware update.
@@JERRYTALKSHOP Oh, that's a shame, I guess it is still beta software so hopefully they'll fix these things eventually.
