As a filmmaker, I am always following camera tech. But, over the past two years or so, most of the top brands have been releasing some seriously powerful cameras at very competitive prices. I've been using the Sony FX30 since it was released. It is a great camera. But, having had the A7iv before it, I am feeling the pull back to LUMIX with the S5ii. And as someone who started out with the GH5, I know I can expect excellent quality with the S5ii. But, also being a low budget/indie filmmaker, I tend to sell the camera I have before I buy another one. Right now, I can get the S5ii for less than what my FX30 cost. So, I am bantering around the idea of joining the LUMIX family again. Thanks for sharing your experience with the S5ii. It really is an impressive camera.
News flash. Thanks to Sony screwing up my FX30 with its own latest firmware, I've traded it for the S5ii and a 50mm lens. Another adventure is about to begin.
Quick tip on pixel shift, you can actually use it handheld too just change the setting to handheld high res mode and it’s acually extremely impressive how sharp it is but definitely use higher shutter speeds and it’s way easier to
I tried to switch to Lumix a few years ago: had to return the first body as faulty, then the second. Couldn't believe the lack of concern shown over this although the dealer made no deal about replacing them. Eventually went down the Sony route, a little more expensive but what a great decision, it's been a wonderful piece of luck.

I have a s5 with the 20-60 mm as I am a none video amateur photographer I was surprised how good this camera is, The contrast, sharpness and colour is outstanding for the price.
Absolutely agree Mark! The files are so nice to work with and that 20-60mm kit lens is absolutely mind blowing! To call it a kit lens feels wrong because it's incredibly sharp!
Awesome! Yeah man, people dont beleive me when I tell them it is the best value full frame camera with the most features, but it is an amazing camera. Of all my sony, and canon cameras, it is still my favorite!
I own both Lumix S5 and Fuji XT-4, and with Lumix you won't have overheating issues in any circumstances, IBIS is not comparable to what Fuji's got. I have taken with Lumix handheld photos on 1 & 2 seconds shutter speed which is impossible with any other brand. Both are very sharp, and I presume that S5 II has better autofocus than the Fuji does. And with Lumix you can use an ordinary SSD as an external recorder, which is more than great. So Lumix has a lot to offer for very reasonable price compared to competition, you will be pleased for sure.
I still keep using both. As much as I like my s5II, I kept my xt4 because it’s simply smaller for day to day use. Sure autofocus sucks when comparing to s5ii but I can live with it. There is a something about xt line for me that “magical”
@@kamilpotato3764 With Fuji and Takumar vintage lens, even weeds in my backyard looks fancy! Great colors, smooth bokeh, that's all you need! What bothers me with Fuji, I can adapt to his drawbacks as with any other device. Their corporate heads, instead of acknowledging faults, and offering updates, promise to do better next time, they lie, pay almost all reviewers, and hire bots. Instead of working out the issues. That is not respecting your customers.
My full frame camera was a Canon 5D mark iv. I wanted to switch to mirrorless and was seriously considering the Lumix S5ii X. In the end, I decided to stick with Canon and just got an R5 ii a couple of weeks ago, but the S5ii really packs a punch. I've never been a fan of Sony for many reasons.
@@kamilpotato3764 yeah, that's a deterrent for many people. I didn't really use third party lenses much so that wasn't a big factor for me when making this decision.
I switched from an A7III to an S5II, and I'm very happy with it too. What I don't like are the weight and size of the camera; this thing is a tank. I'm thinking about buying a compact Fuji for traveling. And at the moment, there aren't many lens options available except for Sigma. Maybe Samyang in the future? But I'd also like to see Tamron, Sirui, and Viltrox on the L-mount.
Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment mate! I agree, the size is different to the Sony A7ii, took some adjusting to but I actually quite like the hefty grip and overall weight... kinda feels reassuring 😄. But a compact everyday camera is always a great investment when you want to travel light! Yeah some more third party lens options would be good. Especially from Tamron as I really enjoyed their 28-75mm f2.8 lens on my Sony
How did people live without a camera for thousands of years. No videos no computers and no TV. Not a single show of any kind in your home. Now we have a million models of everything. Too many choices.
I went the other way. Had a GH4 which I loved apart from the shocking auto focus. I waited for years for Panasonic to sort it out but got fed up and switched to Sony FX30. Panasonic have finally sorted out auto focus and have world class stabilisation but I'm happy with Sony the only thing that might tempt me back now in internal ND filters. For video in the prosumer space Panasonic and Sony rule IMO it just comes down to which of the features where each excels is more important to you.
As someone who owns a a7iv and a s5 you are so right, but at this stage Im looking at a zv e1 for higher frame rates in full frame at an affordable price. I really think Panasonic dropped the ball with the S5iix if that camera had had 60fps full frame (even line skipped) I would buy two.
Sorry I should have been more clear! What I was getting at was shooting on a tripod would eliminate camera movement which would make the image stitching process a little easier in camera. Not essential, just how I'd use it when shooting landscapes 😊
Hope the new camera system meets your expectations in the long term, Chris. How are low light performance, battery life, custom button/dial options, and menu navigation? (Does this model tell you when you are at sea level?😂). A follow-on vid, e.g., 4 months of use, would be telling. BTW, my YT viewing device default vid resolution is 720p, so did not detect quality diff from prior posts. Cheers!
Thanks Paul! All great questions that i'm curious about myself! I'll need to spend a lot more time with it before I know those answers but first impressions are incredibly positive! I'll be sure to do that! 4 months feels like a good amount of time given how much I shoot! 👌🏻📸 Good to know that would be of interest! Might be worth seeing if there are any 'advanced settings' where you can select your own playback resolution. In the youtube player, where you selected the resolution, it may give you a few more options 👌🏻😊
@@chrisharveyphotography Yes, 1080p is the YT setting topside resolution option, but on my aging iPad I can’t detect much difference. Will have to accept your word that IQ is spectacular.😁
Thanks for your question! My main motivation was just the fact that the additional features of the S5iix weren't essential for the type of work I do! I think it's fantastic value and the specs of the iix are amazing but it's just comes down to what you need and whether its overkill or not. If you can afford the additional expense then the iix would no doubt be a great choice but i'm super happy with the s5ii
Thanks! That's absolutely true! Sorry I should have been more clear! What I was getting at was shooting on a tripod would eliminate camera movement which would make the image stitching process a little easier in camera. Not essential, just how I'd use it when shooting landscapes 😊
@chrisharveyphotography I was tempted but in the end I ended up getting a Lumix G9ii with the 12-60 Leica F2.8-4 and the 25mm F1.7 as well as a spare battery for about £1700 it cost me!
Cameras are a box with a sensor. A BOX. I switched from Pentas to Canon to Nikon F2. You know what? None of that changed my picture quality, but I got my Nikon in Japan where it was much less expensive than in the U.S. Changing cameras is nuts. Many of my best photos was taking with film cameras, totally mechanical, no automation, cameras. It's not the camera, it's the artist using the camera.
Can you tell me please something about buffer and switching from photo to video after burst of raw photos? I am hybrid wedding shooter and I would like to switch to lumix s5ii. Can’t find any tests or info about it. Will it allow to do 9 raw photos snd start recording video instantly? Thanks in advance.
Hey chris , really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with more Quality Editing in your videos and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail and also help you with the overall youtube strategy and growth ! Pls let me know what do you think ?
If you manually set the proper white balance, shoot SLOG3, and use a good corrective LUT you will get amazing colors. I use the EOS alpha LUT from Eric Lenz - it’s amazing.
Yeah I know a few people who feel this way! You can get good colours but you have to do so much work to get them! With the Lumix, I don't even need to do anything to HSL sliders in LR and colour grading video is a dream if the white balance is set correctly 👌🏻
I got a Canon r50... and then realized what crop meant... what recording limitations meant... etc etc. Basically read more. . . find a look / vibe you like, find the LENS first. Then the camera. If you're into video.... its Lumix and Sony currently winning. (imho) But if you're about to get a s5ii s5iix from lumix, maybe wait until their next cameras are announced before christmas. Might be something worthwhile...
I have Sony a7IV and Lumix S5II . If we speak about event photography : Lumix has less DR , its rly easy overexpose highlights , AF struggles way more ( better with native lenses than Sigma 28-70, 35 1.4) , less Mp , Raw File size is enormous and no options for smaller files, working with flash( godox system ) is pain intheaaass, so slow, turns on /sleep off is slower , bulky, positives : LCD is better , colors and sensor I would say better, noise on high Iso better! Sharpness! omg , Lumix is so sharp cuz it has no OLP filter, ( moire because of that). Overall Lumix feels like a work horse ( as Canon 5dm3) . But Af perfomance for some serious isnt that good as Sony /Canon.
@mex5341 I've used the same autofocus on the G9ii for fast moving and small subjects like Puffins. If it can do that with ease there's basically nothing it can't do
Congratulations for getting a real camera and dumping Chinese radio 😂😂😂 Panasonic is absolutely stunning and there is nothing wrong with AF . It stunning AF for photographers who know what they are doing. Sony is highly over rated and system for UA-cam photographers.

News flash. Thanks to Sony screwing up my FX30 with its own latest firmware, I've traded it for the S5ii and a 50mm lens. Another adventure is about to begin.
Do you still enjoy the switxh? Thinking how jump from my a6700 to the s5ii
Hi Chris.
This video is my start with your channel.
Hi Colin! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my videos and for leaving such thoughtful comments! I really appreciate you taking the time to engage with my videos! It's always great to hear your thoughts on the photos and what you enjoy about the videos so hopefully see you in the next one! 😃
welcome to the Lumix family your going to love the menus besides the obvious.
Thanks mate! I’m blown away so far! It’s a big change from the Sony a7iii.. but in a good way 👌🏻. Slowly getting to grips with it! Thanks for watching buddy 🙏🏻
Thanks dawg. This helps!
Thanks for watching man!
Awesome! Yeah man, people dont beleive me when I tell them it is the best value full frame camera with the most features, but it is an amazing camera. Of all my sony, and canon cameras, it is still my favorite!
I've just taken the jump from Fuji to Lumix and got the S5ii and yet to really try it out. Fingers crossed I'll be pleased
So Lumix has a lot to offer for very reasonable price compared to competition,
you will be pleased for sure.
How are you liking the R5 II in comparison to the S5II?
@@guydesrouilleres I've never had an S5II so I can't say.
I find that lack of 3rd party lenses makes on Canon RF mount is discouraging
@@kamilpotato3764 yeah, that's a deterrent for many people. I didn't really use third party lenses much so that wasn't a big factor for me when making this decision.
15:57 wow what a steal!
Hopefully I can save up and also find such a combo in the future.
❤
I mainly use the sigma 28-70mm 2.8 for travel works great and fits into a smaller camera bag
why not a s9 with sigma I serie lenses or wait for samyang primes :)
@@Valerossi0I’ve been thinking about the s9
Wow, that's a great deal!
I couldn’t believe it, I thought it was ‘used’ when I first came across it - had to call them up to check 😆. Couldn’t be happier!
Nice video bro please share best video lens for lumix s5iix
Consider sigma has many great new lens for L mount as well. It is certainly a great system to invest.
At 8:16, you don't need a tripod, you can shoot it handheld!
You can shoot it handheld.. but it looks horrible.. so it doesn't really work handheld... have you tried it or just like to talk about it lol...
Sorry I should have been more clear! What I was getting at was shooting on a tripod would eliminate camera movement which would make the image stitching process a little easier in camera. Not essential, just how I'd use it when shooting landscapes 😊
I have the A7RIV and love it except the screen. I wish I went with the 5. Other than that, great camera and amazing resolution.
Same here ordered the s5ii after 2 months of obsessive research….
I think its a well made decision.
The only thing Sony is still a tiny bit ahead
is the auto-focus.
hi, just a question, what made you decide to you get the lumix s5ii instead of the lumixs5iix? besides the price difference.
Nice video! You can also shoot handheld in the high res mode.
Thanks! That's absolutely true! Sorry I should have been more clear! What I was getting at was shooting on a tripod would eliminate camera movement which would make the image stitching process a little easier in camera. Not essential, just how I'd use it when shooting landscapes 😊
Even as a M43 (and wildlife) shooter I was very tempted by that exact deal as it's a ridiculous bargain!!!
I can't recommend it highly enough! 👌🏻 So much value for money!
@chrisharveyphotography I was tempted but in the end I ended up getting a Lumix G9ii with the 12-60 Leica F2.8-4 and the 25mm F1.7 as well as a spare battery for about £1700 it cost me!
Chris, but you know that you don't need a tripod to take 48 and 96 megapixel photos, you can do it directly by holding the camera in your hands.
I'm getting a S5iix so just learning about this ecosystem...I'm curious what lens you used for the sample clip at 9:00 -- it's good. Thanks
Do the old watch straps fit?
Cameras are a box with a sensor. A BOX.
I switched from Pentas to Canon to Nikon F2. You know what? None of that changed my picture quality, but I got my Nikon in Japan where it was much less expensive than in the U.S.
Changing cameras is nuts.
Many of my best photos was taking with film cameras, totally mechanical, no automation, cameras. It's not the camera, it's the artist using the camera.
Which kase filter kit do you have ?
Why didn't you just get the Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8 for L-mount, as a replacement for your Tamron 28-75mm?
Because the bundle I bought didn't have that as an option. It's a lens i'd consider in the future for sure because that's a really versatile lens.
you don't have to use a tripod for the 96mp high res photo, there is a handheld mode since firmware v 2.2
Not sure if it's your colour grading but after the switch it's more yellow making you look a bit ill.
14:01 Sony makes 20-70 f4 constant aperture lens nad it's even 10mm longer than Lumix 20-60
Yes, it does, but it is almost three times more expensive than the Panasonic 20-60
@@marekfoto8285And it is better
Like Sony, the numbering scheme is very confusing. I was looking at the Panasonic Lumix S5iiX which is several hundred more. Need more research.
what’s the snitching feature call
👍
Hey chris , really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with more Quality Editing in your videos and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail and also help you with the overall youtube strategy and growth ! Pls let me know what do you think ?
Since the last firmware update you can shoot 96MP without tripod.
LUMIX Rules !!! Congrats !!! Panny colours are really good! Sony Baloney good bye 😆👍
The colours have really blown me away! Sony Baloney 😂 I like that.
@@chrisharveyphotography Hi and appreciate the reply. Feel free to use that catch phrase! 😄
Very good video. That's one thing I can't stand about my Sony the greens and yellows makes me wonder if I should move as well.
I apologize, are you using Sony?
If you manually set the proper white balance, shoot SLOG3, and use a good corrective LUT you will get amazing colors. I use the EOS alpha LUT from Eric Lenz - it’s amazing.
Yeah I know a few people who feel this way! You can get good colours but you have to do so much work to get them! With the Lumix, I don't even need to do anything to HSL sliders in LR and colour grading video is a dream if the white balance is set correctly 👌🏻
@@chrisharveyphotography That sounds great. I really like the 42mp of my Sony. It's a tough one.
@@RandumbTech Thanks I'll check that out...
I got a Canon r50... and then realized what crop meant... what recording limitations meant... etc etc.
Basically read more. . . find a look / vibe you like, find the LENS first. Then the camera.
If you're into video.... its Lumix and Sony currently winning. (imho)
But if you're about to get a s5ii s5iix from lumix, maybe wait until their next cameras are announced before christmas. Might be something worthwhile...
I have Sony a7IV and Lumix S5II . If we speak about event photography : Lumix has less DR , its rly easy overexpose highlights , AF struggles way more ( better with native lenses than Sigma 28-70, 35 1.4) , less Mp , Raw File size is enormous and no options for smaller files, working with flash( godox system ) is pain intheaaass, so slow, turns on /sleep off is slower , bulky,
positives : LCD is better , colors and sensor I would say better, noise on high Iso better! Sharpness! omg , Lumix is so sharp cuz it has no OLP filter, ( moire because of that). Overall Lumix feels like a work horse ( as Canon 5dm3) . But Af perfomance for some serious isnt that good as Sony /Canon.
New firmware for the S5II has helped immensely!
@@j.e9971 nope. not really
@@mex5341 skill issue
@mex5341 I've used the same autofocus on the G9ii for fast moving and small subjects like Puffins. If it can do that with ease there's basically nothing it can't do
@@JoeMaranophotography u can't compare m4/3 and FF .
nooooooooo
Afraid so! And I zero regrets 👌🏻😄
Panasonic sucks at photos.. i went from panasonic to sony and not disappointed at all. the lens selections are also bad in panasonic
Congratulations for getting a real camera and dumping Chinese radio 😂😂😂 Panasonic is absolutely stunning and there is nothing wrong with AF . It stunning AF for photographers who know what they are doing. Sony is highly over rated and system for UA-cam photographers.
Just say it's because you can afford to
New leicas have bad colors IMO, Lumix has much better colors
You’d be dumb not to get the 24mm 1.4 Sigma unreal lens
I'll definitely be looking into some Sigma lenses 👌🏻
