My favorite Pokémon Podcast!
Great one as always! I always thought that these new thematics open doors for new and interesting pokémon concepts but remains a risky and hard task to keep them faithful to the original pokémon design. Some pokémon end up being too complex or abstract to even sympathize with. I have to admit, Gen 9 designs grew on me, yet upon their reveal I despised them all, take one or two exeptions. But it is after playing the game and catching these, that one can truly understand what they even are trying to be. And once I got it, I began to love them. Also for the DLC there are too many rumours and no actual concrete information just for now, but the idea of Kalos being reintroduced is very exciting tho.
Magikarp could have little arms and legs and evolve into a large blue walking fishman monster or like Godzilla only ripped from all the squats
Batesian mimicry would probably be closest then convergent evolution, due to each rf form is the direct super effective type of the original form. Water wigglet beats ground digglet. Toedscruel Grass and ground beats water and poison
Isn't turos a bull, not a buffalo? Like i understood, the black bulls of spain and matadors themeatically fit it being a black bull , and it made sense it being /fighting fire, but it shoulda been boffulant as the water buffalo no? That's the buffalo

I think a cool concept for magikarp and gyrarados would be paper lanterns and make it a ghost type. Like a karp lantern evolves into a New years dragon lanter float, but maybe that's more regonal form rather than Convergence ? My thoughts on mareep would be a rock/steel magnet dude that's pulling in mangetic dust to resemble the fur mareep has maybe even something playing off steel wool
I'm just excited for Pokemon Day when we get the DLC announced!
In terms of select pokemon that have sort of exclusive gimmicks, I would personally be invested in evolution that essentially merges "No Evo" pokemon together like the galar fossils.
I would love Skitty/Delcatty getting a convergent form based on cattail grass. Skitty's tail already is pretty reminiscent of cattail too, so it's not even that off the wall of a concept. Also adore that Aloe Staryu idea mentioned; Staryu's one of my favourite Pokemon so it getting a really cool convergent form would be awesome.
It's interesting you call Pokémon evolution as metamorphosis since the first Pokémon evolution in the anime was Ash's Caterpie which instead of glowing and changing form it instead evolved using its real life counterparts method of metamorphosis of building a cocoon to become Metapod from which Butterfree physically exits
If they don't want eevee to evolve another eeveelutions then make Paradox eeveelutions. dragon for past and steel for future
Finished the last episode, absolutely loved it and now I'm like only a tenth through this one and I know it's gonna be good.
I agree that RFakes shouldn't be called coincidences, they aren't a coincidence they're caused for a reason. Mushrooms have Mycelium that reach under ground like how Jellyfish have tentacles that reach behind them. That's convergent evolution at play, not as drastic but both developed the same physical characteristic through different pressures.
Moles and Garden eels live under ground, similar pressures, Moles dig to find food, hide from predators, and have a home. Garden Eels do the same thing. In these first two pokemon we have different forms of Convergent evolution happening at the same time which is really cool.
If I had to Guess the Toed line evolved thicker Mycelium to walk around and just so happened to look like the Tenta line because they already had the similarities with their "Tendrils" and The Wig line evolved smoother bodies and bigger noses to help them smell in water and move easier underground.
Their is no coincidence when it comes to any kind of evolution aside from mutation, but that's an entirely different topic, so coincidence pokemon doesn't fit. I'm interested to see what Pokemon Calls them though, definitely.

(Now is as good a time as any, I love commenting on the podcasts but since I'm driving while I listen I don't get any opportunities to give my thoughts as they come and sadly you're left with what I can remember from the episode.)
I'm about halfway through now and I feel like there shouldn't be a debate on whether or not to call the Pokemon Convergent pokemon at all right now. It's very obvious that's what they based this new type of form on.
Also I'd say that when it's so blatant that something in the games is based on something in real life that shouldn't be getting caught up in classification that should just be the correct way to go about a naming convention. Usually I see everyone's points but in this episode so far I just can't see where Soul is coming from.
As for the Convergent Gyarados, I can absolutely see the Magikarp as something that just pretends to be a Magikarp to lure in prey? Using how helpless Magikarp is as a disguise to catch pokemon that try to eat it.
Also I'm very sure it'll come in DLC
(Now I'm home I relax until tomorrow where I hopefully finish this episode and move to the next!!)
Not entirely done but pretty much, 17 minutes left. And I really like this episode! The co evolution idea is really interesting, maybe something like a symbiosis? If they ever did it I don't think I can see them not making it so two pokemon evolve together into one. But it's nice to dream about other possibilities.
Loved this episode, and I can see Johto or Unova getting games. The fact that there are so many hints for Johto makes me suspicious about them giving us one, maybe like a double reverse. But then again you can never really predict Pokemon so who knows.

One thing to note about co Pokémon is that they are always a type that is strong against the type of the original eg diglet is ground and wiglet is water having a type advantage, same thing with toedscrule it being grass which is strong against water(a type of tentacrule) and it being ground which is strong against poison(the other type of tentacrule) I really hope they keep this convention going forward because it’s pretty fun and limitations breed creativity
Yooo! It’s funny that y’all brought up Slowbro being a “co evolution” and I believe it’s something that Pokémon has been wanting to use as almost a “last resort” to get people back into Pokémon if things start to go south, or just wayyyy down the line.
However, it’s weird that slowpoke doesn’t evolve into slowbro the same way in the show vs the games. Why is that? From what I remember, correct me if I’m wrong, that scene in the first season of Pokémon seeing slowpoke evolve was the only time we saw a slowpoke evolve.
Okay I have a theory I’m not sure anyone has brought up but ima say it.
So Heath went down to area zero, he actually sees nothing and just makes up these Pokémon. However, all the markings and everything he finds in the ruins is real like the herba mysticas. He then takes those and spreads them around paldea. Nothing happens for a while until Koraidon and miraidon appear, and everyone can see it right? Maybe that’s because the herba mystica comes from the 3rd legendary that’s a psychic maybe poison type that is putting the out of paldea under a spell that has everyone in this make believe paradox world of these paradox Pokémon.
I find it strange that the map on the game is covered with grey lines much like the DLC area of the map, thus meaning whatever is under the clouds, is a paradox area formed by the 3rd legendary based on what it wants us to see because it’s somewhat familiar to us, much like the paradox pokemon looking like todays Pokémon.
I find it strange that geeta is the only person in the game with glimoura, cool she’s the top Pokémon league person, but she sure does have a really tight leash on everything that happens in paldea compared to other league champions. Glimoura is known to stick to walls inside of area zero, call me crazy, but would it not be weird if geeta was also AI made due to comfortability for us as humans? Glimoura gives the AI power that it needs to continue its work on maintaining the bigger plan the 3rd legendary/DLCs have in store for us?
No one likes a micromanager, and that’s exactly what geeta does with the gym leaders and her elite four crew she stronghold to join. So forced? Is geeta possibly protecting something that she does not want us to know about? Her character is still very much a mystery and needs to be talked about more, if haven’t already.

Also, these "convergent evolution" pokémon sole conversion traits are displayed in their anatomy. And not in terms of function / survivability means. So this makes me very intrigued to why they are "convergent pokémon" if the fact that, for example "tentacruel and toedscruel lookalike but are not related" has something to do with environmental pressures. What advantage does a mushroom get by looking like a jellyfish or vice-versa? On the contrary, "divergent evolution" would make more sense, as an ancentral pokémon species of both tentacruel and toedscruel suffered different environmental pressures and evolved to what we know today, hence their shared appearence (same class of pokémon, different species). I don't know if game freak did some evolutionary biology research on these, but as a life sciences researcher, I find this "convergent" line very confusing, and perhaps flawed and in actuality, being a "divergent" line.
PS: And even though "regional variant" lines are indeed and confirmed divergent evolution, this "convergent line" makes more sense as a more ancient and evolved form of a "regional variant" than anything.

I feel like most people are up and arms about how they feel about the game and even employees a game freak, tpc, Nintendo are apologizing for the aftermath.
It feels like instead of this being a celebration people are asking what's going on behind the scenes.
I know it's a meme to dunk on Game Freak, but they do care about their products but never seem to have enough time to actually make them as competent as they would like despite the game's getting bigger.
Do you three think that this is only going to get worse as things go on or will they restructure the Pokemon Foundation?
I think my opinion on the “Convergent species” concept is that I’m okay with it, but I don’t want them to do a lot of them going forward. Mostly because I’m suspicious that they want to see if they can phase out Region Variants with them; and imo Regional Variants are so much more interesting.
Maybe it’s because we only have 2 lines now. And while I love Toedscool & think Toedscruel is alright, I find Wiglett/Wugteio to be soooo uninspired and boring. Also apparently they share the same stats w the OG Pokémon they’re based off of? Which is kinda lame to me.
