I’m actually excited about the upcoming JRPG based on the property: “One Piece: Odyssey”. At the time of this writing it is supposed to be out in 2 months and looks really good so far!
I think Unlimited World Red is the closest a One Piece game has ever gotten to capturing the adventurous spirit of the series. Meanwhile the Pirate Warriors games really capture the characters’ personalities and animations are pitch perfect. If we could have a game that combines the two, it would be gold.

Grand battle was my jam as a kid, having no concept of quality. Grand adventure too, in fact they were my introduction to the series and got me to read the manga at my local library. I really enjoyed Romance dawn on 3ds recently too, it's a bit long winded cuz some of the scenes are an actual 1:1 adaptation with all the lines intact but the game play is a lot more in depth than i thought when i got it for 2 dollars.
unlimited adventure 2 on the wii is still to this day the game that captures the most the feel of one piece imho, stylish af, brand new adventure sailing around multiple island with their biomes and foes to fight. Musou styled titles work for the 1st time you play one, then realize they're extremely shallow and the repetitive nature of them gets extremely unfun

I think my favorite appearances of One Piece characters have been in non One Piece games, such as Jump Ultimate Stars and Battle Stadium DON. The Dynasty Warriors did fit really well, even if it wasn't to my taste. Was glad to get to play as Boa though.
Looking back on this video for the fun of it, and after much consideration... it's still an awesome analysis on various titles and the theme of interpretation the many developers had for these games. But more than that... this intro is still the best thing ever. The soft and quick response "What!?" was delivered so damn good. And each cut away from GC and back again to reveal more One Piece stuff(going from one Manga volume to 2 one of which is upside down, to a bunch of them with Luffy's hat, then finally being dressed as the crazy stretchy pirate), as well as those zoom in's, perfect usage and timing. Though one thing I realized, at first I thought the line "I have no idea what your talking about" was in response to "you like one piece right?". But actually, given what the segment after I have no idea line is, it might be in relation to that. Like GC was saying "I don't know what your talking about, what One Piece games?". So, there's that, which is it, hhhhmmmmm Ah well, still awesome :3
6:20 well there were big changes with Grand Battle and Pirates Carnival when brought over to the west. For one the music and some parts of the intro were changes from the original Japanese release. You can blame 4kids for that one.
2:55 Actually, there was a time where bees attacked in One Piece. During the Jaya arc, when Luffy and Chopper were looking for the South Bird, a bee hive dropped while they were busy trying to catch insects, leading to bees attacking them. I don't blame you for not remembering though. It was like, two pages.
I need to pick up that One Piece GBA game. Made by the Dimps people? Those guys are the dudes behind a lot of the Handheld Sonic games, and looking at how fluid Luffy's sprite is, it's definitely Dimps ;)
Unlimited Adventure was my shit. Back when it came out I was in my early teens and since I hadn't developed common sense I loved it and still have fond memories of it. Then I picked up UW Red and realized how bad the games actually were. I shutter to even try to revisit UA because I know I'll be disgusted by the jankiness. I can still pick up & play Grand Adventure and PW3 for some fun every now and then though.
Yeeeeeaaaaaah, there's a lot to be desired from those adventure games. Think I've mentioned this in a different comment reply somewhere here, but I would love a game that does the adventure elements with the PW3 combat. I would die to get an open world one piece game set during the East Blue arc. Just slowly building the crew up while sailing around those sets of islands.

A combination of world red and pw3 would make a good one piece game and possibly the best. I honestly put world red above pw3. Yes they did put a big amount of story in pw3,but I just cant forgive them for not sticking to it 100% and I am not saying that cuz of dressrosa,but instead because they cut out Kid and messed up with alvida as well as law on saobody. Last fight of world red was actually fresh,interesting and quite difficult.
Yeah I think Omega Force and Ganbarion should work on something together. Even if O-Force was essentially just injecting One Piece into Dynasty Warriors, that combat always feels really tight, and World Red's adventure elements were compelling enough. Honestly? Pirate Warriors would have probably been that game if it were more like Dragon Quest Heroes: Tighter, shorter levels but with more emphasis on character customization and base building (ie the ship or the town in World Red).
GC Positive The biggest problem with pw games is the maps. They are really luck luster and not designed for adventure. Too much adventure is boring,but op game needs it to be a op game. Also,you say how you dont like that characters dont have all the attacks at the beggining,but imo that is exactly the charm of such a fighting system. Natural progression and learning new moves. Pw games on the other hand even though more focused on combat are still luck luster because you are just beating random fodders and there is nothing grand about the bigger opponents. A different tactic for boss opponents is a good way to go about it however limited it may be because it still offers more than simple smashing buttons. World red did try to make that happen.

I am a huge One Piece fan but I only played Unlimited Cruise SP1 for the 3DS and I emulated the American only GBA game (I am from Europe), albeit I am stuck in the Buggy Boss battle...
I sort of wished you had touched on the 3DS game. Even, if you had to rely on a few still images or a few crappy paint drawings in order to dig into why the game is so terrible. While, I may not be a die hard fan of One Piece. I'm a fan of turn-based RPGs. And even as a fan of that genre I found One Piece: Romance Dawn to be a disappointment. An issue that is made worse when you consider the game's failure to deliver anything worthwhile to the fans of the series in a lot of places.
Yeah that's what I had been seeing when I was looking into it for the video! I would have covered it, but between the sudden shift to images for the duration of talking about the game, it not being very good for anything or anyone, and already having games that I could more-or-less breakdown that area of licensed titles with, I decided not to include it. Wouldn't mind doing an episode on it standalone though; It's One Piece, it's JRPG, it's basically a game made for me, so finding out how poorly a game can cater to my tastes would probably be a wild ride.

And, oddly enough One Piece: Romance Dawn is the only 3DS game I've ever reviewed. And, yeah I also lack a capture card so I had to rely on still images and a few paint drawings to illustrate my points at places. As far as the game goes. I'd image it would be more of a boring ride then a wild one. In fact, I remember defeating most enemy groups with Luffy's Gum-Gum Whip. And while the game does require you to spend SP/MP/TP or some equivalent in order to perform such attacks. The game also gives you an equip early on that gives you a percentage based auto regeneration for this energy. As such you'll eventually be regenerating more of this energy per turn then you'll need to spend on your whip attack. As such, battles in the game after a while feel like a boring chore that only exists to add padding to the game. And, it's not like the game does a good enough job telling the story of the early arcs to get the player deeply invested in the characters for the most part. And some of the later arcs are covered with a few paragraphs that leave out pivotal events to the progression of the story.
Hey! if your pirate manga with 800 plus chapters of content and hundreds of hours with of animation is so great, then why isn't there a single character who in the cast or background that wheres an eyepatch?
@@GCVazquez lol, I once asked my friend who is a huge OP fan and he said kinda said the same thing. But then he kept thinking about it and had an existential crisis and tried to look through every chapter to find even one background character wearing one.
I still have a few issues with the Funimation dub, but they do such a solid job trying to carry over emotion tugs and comedic timing of the original voices. They honestly get pretty damn close.
One Piece is my shit! Granted, I have not seen latest anime episodes in Japan when the time skip occurred, but I still read the manga. And these games are meh, except for the PS3 games and beyond. And glad you didn't play Romance Dawn. It's supposed to be a J-RPG, but the cutscenes are the equivalent of boring ass visual novels, and they last for far too long that it becomes boring. Even the combat doesn't alleviate anything. And since we're both One Piece fans, I'm subbing to you.

Funimation has been doing so great with the anime that it really is a shame that they stopped using them to dub the games after only one entry.
