There can't be competition when intellectual property affords 1 company a monopoly of each drug. The more important the medicine, the more they can charge. So through this system, these scum can squeeze the most possible money out of the entire human population, and everyone is forced to pay the highest price possible for things which if you don't pay you die. The pharmaceutical industry did exactly the same thing with the role out of antirretroviral medication - they kept the price high enough to squeeze as much as possible from the rich, kept fighting in the courts to stop Indian factories producing them for pennies, then once the HIV crisis was "over" in the west they decided they could cut the prices. Potentially millions of people died unnecessarily - but the world didn't really care cause it was in Africa. Drug companies are not "solely responsible to their shareholders", they are made up of real people, accountable for their actions, actively choosing to let millions die.

They make their real money from medical insurance companies, not individuals like myself.

To provide a different perspective, it cost on average $314 million to 4 billion dollars to manufacture a new drug . A lot of drugs are expensive, however governments have schemes in place to subsidise the cost or make it free for disadvantaged people. For example in Australia we have the pharmaceutical benefit scheme. Now, in developing countries they may not have these in place. So when a drug that is vital for their society is developed they cannot partner with these pharmaceutical companies to make it affordable for their people. So it may take $40 to manufacture but what about the cost spent on developing it? It's sad but we live in a capitalist society.
The thing is these companies are businesses they aren't doing good this for free. Its about making money. How do you balance the need to make money and the moral issue. The prevention of spreading HIV/ Aids is still an issue
