  • Yo Joe! G.I. Joe the movie is a brilliant and completely insane film that mixes the military with a weird lovecraftian tale and also there is Don Johnson. Here's everything you didn't know about this animated classic.
    About Everything You Didn't Know:
Who voiced Agents J and K on the Men in Black cartoon? Oh yeah… there was a Men in Black cartoon! Go deep (and we do mean deep) into your favorite TV series of yesteryear… and the ones you may have never heard of (like, at all).

More About G.I. Joe: The Movie: G.I. Joe: The Movie (also known as Action Force: The Movie in the UK) is a 1987 animated film spin-off from the animated series G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, based on the original Hasbro toyline. It was produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions and was animated in Japan by Toei Animation. Created at the height of the G.I. Joe craze in the 1980s, G.I. Joe: The Movie was intended as a theatrical release to be closely followed by The Transformers: The Movie. However, the G.I. Joe film encountered unexpected production delays which allowed the Transformers feature to be released first. Due to the poor box office performances of The Transformers: The Movie and My Little Pony: The Movie, G.I. Joe: The Movie was instead released direct-to-video as well as aired on television in syndication, first in feature length format and later split into a five-part miniseries format as part of the show's syndication package.

    Nice reference to Dial-Tone. LOL
I was one of those kids that was thrilled with the Transformers/GI Joe crossover episode in Transformers season 3. I actually really liked Cobra Commander because he was voiced by Chris Latta who also voiced Starscream and their voices were so "over-the-top-evil" that I always laughed at them. Cobra Commander appearing in the Transformers episode as "Snake, the former leader of the terrorist organization that created 'Synthoids'" which was of course, Cobra (as he shouted at the end of the episode) proved that he somehow managed to get himself back to "normal" (whatever normal is for Cobra Commander). So GI Joe: The Movie wasn't in fact the end for him. Unfortunately, as many know,; Chris Latta is no longer with us and without his voice, Starscream and Cobra Commander will never seem real to me ever again.

The reason for Don Johnson's casting in GI Joe was the same for casting Judd Nelson in Transformers.
The studios involved wanted to have some (80's style) buzz for marketing. As mentioned here, Johnson was huge for starring in Miami Vice; Nelson was a hot ticket because of the Breakfast Club.

Duke was the NCOIC or 1st Sgt of the GI Joe unit. In most US Army units, the highest ranking enlisted is a E-8/1SG or sometimes a Master Sgt. These are normally active duty soldiers near retirement or those who do not plan on going on to E-9/CSM.

As a kid watching the movie on cable I don't remember the over-dub saying Duke was in a coma. I was pretty sad that he died. Then about 12 years later I bought the movie on VHS and was like "huh, they changed the ending so that Duke didn't die" when all the Joes cheer at the end in a long distance camera shot where you can't see anyone talking, they say something like "good news, Duke's ok and recovered". Weird, but too little too late. My childhood was forever changed.

Cobra La was also never brought into the original comic book series despite the deal between Hasbro and Marvel where any action figure created had to be featured in the comic. Larry Hama had stated that it was enough having to include Serpentor and his crazy creation story, but he had to draw the line when it came to Cobra La. As a HUGE fan of the comics, I was very grateful for that decision because I hated the Cobra La stuff.

No cartoonist colors or animates in such great detail back then or even now like those in Japan or Korea! You get the crappy live action of these ANIME when its totally in control of Americans but you get the fantastic when its half done with ANIME artists!

The only issue I have with the Joe movie being released first is simple: without "Arise, Serpentor, Arise," who in the blazes would understand why Cobra had a new leader? ASA didn't air until Sept. 15, 1986. The TF movie was in theatres August 8, 1986.
Would Sunbow have stepped up the Serpentor story earlier in the broadcast schedule, to help make some sense of what was going on?
