The mountain is made famous in the manga series Initial D under the fictional name Akina (秋名), where the main character, Takumi Fujiwara, delivers tofu every day to a hotel uphill, and back down using his father's (eventually gained full ownership) lightly modified Toyota Sprinter Trueno (AE86). It is also where Takumi won his first few races. It is the home course for the racing team called the Akina Speed Stars with which Takumi becomes closely associated. Later in the anime, Takumi due to his unbeatable track records and for his downhill driving technique, is popularly referred to as 'Akina's 86'.

Total common sense to me. Too many good roads become verboten because of a few stupid oiks who ruin it for everyone else. I have my own "secret" routes here in Austria and on my drives I pass through more than one or two small villages, I make it a habit to get off the loud pedal and SLOW down well before I reach the village limits and not hammer it for at least 1/2 a mile after I leave.

It's crazy how Initial D can turn a 5 minute mountain pass into a hour race
Not to mention 5 episodes of 1 street race "battle"

He drove only about %30 of the road, not all of. And its explained in the comments why he make a u turn.

As well as not disturbing the onsen there’s also the the “slight” problem of the five consecutive hairpins having speed bumps upsetting the rhythm of most drivers

arikelvara probably early 2000s maybe mid but I think it was before the anime had its fame.

JDM ism lol you can't win with car geeks, I did know it was a w116 6.9 with hydromatic suspension which Claude Lelouch need to get steady shots with the cameras. But they did dub in the sound of a Ferrari 275 for the sound I think.
The U turn there is also a pretty good idea, considering those devils put speed bumps in the 5 consecutive hairpins.

Yeah, especially in the battle against Ryosuke, the dual-radius corner near the end takes SO LONG to go through, because there was a dramatic overtake there, and its even longer in Legend 3.

Fun fact, remember the place where Iketani and speed stars parking? Look back the manga there's building and the water tower beside it. They demolished the building but thanks to Initial D for making this mountain pass well known around the world, they decided to keep the water tower intact as an icon to Akina mountain pass.
