Mount akina is the most well known touge in existence. Popularised by the street racing manga initial d, this touge is adored by racers of all types. In real life, arcades, and simulators - mount akina is synonymous with Japanese street racing. If you’ve ever tried touge racing, there’s a decent chance your first experience took place on this infamous stretch of road. But, Mount Akina is swear words im not allowed to put in the description
Whenever we drive fast on a road, we intuitively treat it as a racetrack. From finding the racing line, the apexes of each corner, locations for potential overtakes and of course all of the frigging pot holes . Therefore, for us to understand why mount akina is a terrible touge, we need to look at it like it is a racetrack - and discuss what makes a racetrack great, or in this case, not so great.
Race Track Design Rule #1 - Technical difficulty. When designing a race track, the most crucial design element is it’s difficulty. This can be a fine balancing act between making a bland track, or one that is simply too difficult.
Mount akina isn’t particularly difficult, in fact, id go so far as to say it’s boring - no matter how loud you blast eurobeat. In essence, it’s just a bunch of long, bland straights connected via hairpins. Sure, there are a few off kilter corners that can be challenging the first few times you attack them, but, that’s as far as it goes. No, literally, that is as far as the roads of akina go. There’s nothing else to it. As a driver, your biggest challenge with akina is the ability to get a good launch from hairpins. You will gain the most time on straights, as we found out in my racing lines video.
For me personally, Akina simply isn’t stimulating enough to even keep me interested enough to finish the run. I often find myself becoming bored about halfway down, incidentally when Im driving on one of those massive long straights. The worst part is that this is actually true. In my opinion, it doesn’t offer enough of a challenge to be secured as a great touge. There are way more engaging touges, which offer more smiles per hour than akina.
If you want a touge that is properly technically difficult, I can wholly recommend Nagao & Usui. Usui is easily in my top 3 touges, purely because it flows so well. Usui feels like it was purpose built as a road to race on. You can pretty much drive the entire thing on instinct. Not only does it have flow, but it has a huge variety of corners too. From right angles, to double apexes and even some acute hairpins. Just look at those little fellas.
Nagao is cut from the same cloth, but in my opinion, it’s just that little bit more exciting. This is due to the cambered or banked corners. They make Nagao a pleasure to drive on, as the car settles into these corners and allows you to really push it to the limit without worrying too much about losing the rear end. It almost feels like a rollercoaster, with each corner cradling you through. It feels incredible in the least weird way possible.
Race Track Design Rule #2 - Low margin for error. Needless to say, the most exhilerating races and battles occur when drivers are pushed to their limit and are punished when mistakes are made. No, not with speeding tickets - by crashing, or at the very least spinning out.
Seperating drivers at a high level is tough, and turning up the head by allowing a low margin for error is important.
Again, mount akina falls short here. Akina is a relatively wide road. It only really tightens up on the slow corners, which is almsot the exact opposite of what you want if you’re looking for a really engaging touge. The road doesn’t tighten and constrict like many great do, in fact, it only gets wider.
While some may enjoy this - and it may be better for bigger, more chad cars, ultimately it does make things feel again, quite bland. If you lose grip on akina

I can understand that for an experienced and dedicated player Akina might seem boring; particularly solo. I feel this would be "Akin" to calling the AE86 a boring car. Sure you might in time outgrow it but I think that's more of a comment on your skill as a driver than the run itself.
As someone who flat out isn't any good and trying to be better I love Akina online with other people. There's enough margin of error to push a little harder without every corner being death, I can much easier let people by who are way faster, the straights vs hairpins lets me see handling vs power in a very obvious way.
Even the long straights are engaging for someone like me still trying to understand the right line, time and pressure with which to brake. In the same way the AE86 is a car that teaches the driver, I feel the same about Akina as a run. But I guess you are the one who teaches around here, so I'd like to hear your opinion on Akina as a method for learning.

I get that you are commenting on the sim version, but you might want to look at the map for the real mountain pass. It looks like the scales for the sim are off. The real one(Mt. Haruna) is two lanes most of the way top to bottom and those lanes are only slightly wider than an FC. In your video they appear to be much wider than they are in reality. This would mean the straights are longer than real life and the hairpins looser.

There is no principle of what makes a touge good or bad, every touge is unique and that's what set them apart. Now Akina is very unique because the layout is not similar to any other touge, whereas "narrow touges" are all about s-turns and consecutive corners, hence sharing a similarity. There is really nothing that can decide whether a track is bad or not, it's one own's intuition and how far you can take that course to the limit. It's not the track that's boring, you're boring yourself out.

It's kind of like Suzuka, in that regard.
Iroha, then, would be like Laguna Seca.
Tsubaki Line is kind of like the Nordschleife. Plenty of flow, but also extremely technically demanding as well as being demanding on consistency, not to mention countless blind corners that can only be mastered through repetitious experimentation.
My personal favorite though (though Akina comes close due to some stupid sentimental attatchment I have), is gonna have to be Happo - it's the most intense rally course on asphalt.

Because unlike race tracks they were not meant for this and this means you have to addapt to the track you'r on and have to abuse it's mechanics, it's all about learning what is the track about. The road through Zion canyon in Utah would be awesome. I doubt it's in any game, but having driven it at night when there's not anyone else out there, it's an awesome drive. The road widens and tightens at different points, even on the steep section at the bottom with lots of big hairpins (that would be a lot of fun to drift) there's some chicane-like twists that make for interesting corner entrances and exits. Toward the top of the run, a lot of meandering twists and turns cambered to help you around. In the middle is a long, very tight tunnel with several turns ranging from a fast kink to some surprisingly sharp but still sweeping corners. I wouldn't want to push it in real life with my own car but if, between the close rock and tunnel walls and cliff edges, pushing it and getting it right on a video game (or even a car I didn't need to use daily) would feel amazing.

i don't know if this is the game's limitation or poor set up, but you should try using 16x anisotropic filtering on your GPU settings, it's literally free, 0 performance cost, and will make the further asphalt textures look sharp, right now they are blurry

The thing about Akina is that it works great as an INTRODUCTORY course for touge racing, as it is relatively wide and easy by touge standards, but still teaches the skills needed to master the touge (slip angle, 4-wheel drifting, engine braking, inertia drifting, gutter techniques...). Obviously once a driver learns these skills, it becomes possible to apply them to more demanding courses like Irohazaka, Momiji, Happogahara, Shomaru, Sadamine, Tsuchisaka, Tsukuba, Yabitsu, Nagao, Nanamagari, Tsubaki, etc...

can touges be on other countries?
i came back to this video to say that im both happy and horrified that based on these "jl selayo padang" or more known as sitinjau-lauik is possibly a decent touge course(outside of the traffic)
it had a somewhat suprising variety of corners due to elevation change? (note:see street view). quite the flow probably and 2 signature features
its the bridge corner before "that" corner and said corner.
im still unsure about flow and overtaking opportunities. and idk how long it is but after panorama 2 i guess it could be boring. sadly it is kinda short(?) at 8km and it probably felt short too.
width is about 6 metres since its probably designed to be a truck two way. so i guess thats a minus.
i just need to find a mod for this. to test it out.

I grew and built my technical skills on Akina and I will never stop running it, but I agree. I honestly prefer Sadamine over any other touge, just because of how beautiful it is. Driving wise and looks wise. The low speed winding corners at the start let you prepare for the high speed section ahead, which then goes back to low speed corners. It's the most fun I've had on a touge and I highly recommend you drive and practice it.

Good review. Im not a big fan of touges with long straights and key corners where you have to know exactly the optimal speed and breaking points to exit as faster as possible to another long straight section.
Maybe as a "fictional" road in the anime, they imagined it like that to give some advantage to racers who knows the path inch by inch, like Takumi. That's how his underpowered car comes up in the mirror like a unnatural freak.
But yeah, I also prefer narrow tracks with a bunch of corners, even if the average speed be much smaller and have less overtake opportunities.

If you trying to talk about togue and compera to some track don't forget that all those roads first of all wasn't designed for racing on it. It is all about public roads in mountains. Complaining about long srtaights and hairpins, lack of overtaking opportunities on tracks that based on real road is quite bad. In AC lots of tracks that was design for racing and just have scenary to look alike japanese public road.

Personally, for me, Touge has a different approach to the race track, a race track is exactly what you mentioned in the video, but Touge is a "chilling street" where you swing from side to side with the car, feeling the curves and listening to some music at the same time, eventually drifting/sliding or going fast in some parts

Well... Pretty much everything you said about Akina are reasons why I love it.
I don't like claustrophobic tracks like Shomaru or Takigahara I don't want to be stuck in second gear and having to hit the brake pedal more often than the accelerator.
I absolutely DESPISE Irohazaka. I was sick of this touge in Initial D Arcade Stage 8, an arcade game made to be FUN. I can't imagine driving there in real life 🤢
The signature features of Akina? Well, what about the high speed sections? If my car has 300HP, I don't want to be stuck in sub 80km/h speed. I (and the car itself) want to hit 4th and 5th gear. After all the drifting, It is so satisfying to just floor it and let the engine roar. Like a wise man said, I paid for the speedometer, I'm gonna use the whole speedometer.
And about the overtaking opportunities, well, that alone makes it great. You can have proper racing without turning the race into bumper cars
