Yeah honestly don't understand how Astrologer isn't listed as number 1. Yes you don't get a 100% shield from the get but you can find one pretty easy and you can pick up a katana fairly easy at the start as well, just need a few levels in dex and strength to use it. Honestly most bosses are a joke at range with magic and you start with two of the arguably best spells in the game along with a decent staff to cast them with. Not to mention if you're not fighting at melee range you don't need a 100% shield, hell even if you are you can just dodge well and it's a non issue. I personally don't understand the big push with melee builds, even if I play one I'll at least use some spells and duel wielding seems kind of pointless to me, think I would rather 2 hand and switch back to sword and board, what advantages other than looking cool is two weapons? Combos? Honestly not sure.

I started with Warrior and could not beat the first boss no matter how hard I tried. I went back and started over with Confessor and it is SO much easier. LOL
The wretch, while the least equipped, is the only level 1 class. The rest vary somewhere between level 8 to 12 (all over level 5). They also start with 10 in all stats, something no other class has. While not the easiest or necessarily the best, I think the wretch is the easiest to customize. I started with an int/dex build and have since gone to int/str/dex with enough faith and arcane to cast most but the highest level of incantations. By using magic on AOW on weapons like The Dismounter or already magical enchanted weapons like the Darkmoon Greatsword. I like how with high intellect (63) adds not only to these already powerful weapons, but ranged magic damage as well. I have a console recorded video of me "kame-a-meaing" about 3/4 of Moghs health. Yes, I do OP attacks on bosses because I suck. 😂

bandit, is a good class , it do a high critic damage . plus the arcane help on bleed. and little shield is good for parry/riposite. my favorite class ever.
I started with confessor but it turns out its not much of my play style. I tried bandit, so far its better for me 😊 I enjoy duel weild daggers, bleeds and stealth. For boss fights my bleeds do good damage i get the boss down in a timely manner, just gotta be a pro at dodging tho 😂
I started as a wretch and i'm in my first 20 hours of gameplay and honestly i'd say for the first playthrough wretch is the best if you want to have a full experience of the game starting from 0, it makes you appreciate any loot you get and i've tried out so many different weapons and armors i've gotten from loot. I just made my build depending on the weapons and gear i got. The other classes are only better if you already have a build in mind and know what playstyle you want to use from the beginning of the game but i'd say starting as a wretch atleast in your first playthrough would be the best and most fun option. I'm no souls games fan nor do i own or play any of those games but i liked elden ring mainly because of the open world rpg style and for the replayability. So far i'm having a lot of fun playing as a wretch, sure you only start with a club and it's a bit harder early on but there are so many ways you can ease your way around that honestly + the club isn't all that bad to bonk with xd
I really want to do samurai or astrologer. Just 2 things I find quite fun to play and I love magic stuff. I’d love to play the support magician with my friends.
hey, not sure what you meant by sneaking up on enemy’s or more items with thief, choosing thief doesn’t effect your stealth and other classes start with around the same arcane
Just bought the game last week. Never got into From software games because I knew they werent for me. Started out as a wretch because I wanted to create my own build. It was a greuling first 10 hours lmao
Started as vegabond and got one shot killed and rage quitted for 8 months and then selected prisoner where i can use magic for long distance damage and can also use sword for meele only problem is the spell time is long
I love that I came here to learn the best class so I could remake my character. And apparently my instinct to choose a samurai was already right. I just have to get better now.
Ive never played any souls game before, ran 3 different builds at the beginning of the game until i figured out that prisoner is the right fit for me. It really just takes a bit of time to find the right one for you.
Started with a Samurai, but eventually moved into putting more points into magic after I had a great platform for close combat, it all depends where you dump your skill points in the end I think.
Elden ring is my first souls game. I made my first build as a samurai, then immediately went to wretch after learning the controls after a couple hours. I have beaten godrick, use madness incantations and honestly I need to lvl up bad💀
this is a really decent order, i just think the warrior and confessor should be switched. dex classes are all inherently easy and the confessor has such a wide stat spread, it leaves you sort of weak in every aspect early on.
Before I started my first playthrough, i wanted to choose a build that i wanted. Once i chose one, i then had to look at the stats of the starting classes to see what i could choose from that suits the build I'm after. After looking at them all, the confessor was the only option for the build I'm working towards
For my very first playthrough of elden ring which I did not finish (I still haven't finished the game yet) I chose to be the wretch (I never played a single souls game before elden ring) and I was able to get as far as the Tree Sentinel right outside the gate of Lyndell, I couldn't get in though
Vagabond and Samurai are the best starting classes. it forces you to get in the bosses face and actually learn the mechanics of the game. if you’re complaining about get 2 or 3 shorted then just get better because you won’t get through elden ring with that kind of mindset
I think after a week of deciding and starting over repeatedly (its how I do things) this video helped me choose finally! Gonna go with Astrologer. Wait, no... Samurai. Nah, Astrologer. Maybe Samurai? Ooh, Confessor! Hero with pure STR. Stealth/poison/bleed/rot Bandit? Hmmm... Oh man, I'm never gonna pick one. 😂
Wretch is not the equivalent to deprived its actually easier long term because of it's flexible bases and starting level 1 you don't feel like you're wasting levels going for any build
Here is an actual educated summary of this games “origins” unlike this video with so many blatant lies: Vagabond: best for a durable tanky build Warrior: best for a quick fighter build Hero: best for a strong heavy weapon warrior build Bandit: best for a quick ranged/ rogue build Astrologer: best for a intelligence based mage build Prophet: best for a faith based mage/ healer build Samurai: best for a all around dexterous and durable fighter Prisoner: best for a intelligence mage and quick fighter hybrid Confessor: best for a faith mage and fighter hybrid Wretch: best for a build that doesn’t fit for a direction that none the other starting classes go.
So I just finished my 7th run through Elden Ring and have fully achieved probably the weirdest build I've ever done. Started off as an astrologer that would use spirit ashes as offense, but ended the game with the TANKIEST Mage ever with no summons. Any who, wretch fam, rise up
Wretch is the most fun for me, starts at level one and you can put its stats in whatever direction you want. Put on whatever clothing and gear you find out in the world to make it a character who just scavenge's whatever they find. Wearing and using whatever they come across amd working with that. Also, it's just funny to run around in the beginning, almost butt ass naked and all, lol.
I wish I had this video when I bought the game shortly after launch. Never played a souls game and decided to start as a bandit. This will explain why I was 80hrs in before I found the game in any way enjoyable.
Astrologer look good for beginners because you can fight at a distance but what about when dealing with bosses that are always in you face and won’t give you time to cast spells? I haven’t played this game but from what I’ve seen, these bosses can be aggressive.
First time ever playing a dark souls style game. Just never got into it before. But I picked my class before watching this and just so happened to pick the samurai, so I guess it works out. Thanks for the info though, I’ll keep it in mind if and when I decide to start fresh after I get a grip on how to actually play the game, haha
Just started playing not too long ago, my first souls like game. Either I'm very stubborn or this game seems a bit easy. Especially with the fact that I went wretch and still don't really know what to do. Getting small pointers from my brother every so often.
The hero starts with an axe not a sword . And it stats are perfect for an Unga Bunga run just get your mount ride down south and pick up the large club.
Horrible guide video with so many inaccuracies in regards to classes and the overall combat presentation in the video. The guy literally tries to one hand a sword which he doesn't have enough stats for at 3:13 and doesn't 2 hand a sword to be able to land good attacks on crystal skin miners at 6:40 among other things, making this a guide coming from someone who doesn't understand the game at all.
Just started the game with wretch not bad just follow the grace the the first soldier outpost got a feel for combat and the horse and some basic equipment from the soldiers and those weapons have snowballed. I don't think it does trash damage for a base character. I do think it's not boss ready off the bat but it's not trash
I am going to get this on my birthday for PlayStation five and DLC as well. I’m going with the samurai sword. I want to be a samurai and I reckon it’ll be a really good class to start out. I’ve never played a dark soul but I’ve playing one and I’m enjoying it so much. I put three hours into the game and I’m loving doc souls.
As a person new to from software games this game in particular I chose the confessor based of the looks. This video would have been helpful for me as im more of a close combat sword class however I really don't think this video matters when it comes to best to worst because it really depends on your style of class you prefer. Now that I've seen that the classes come with different weapons to begin with I would have chosen something different or maybe I just didn't read because I was overwhelmed by the many choices of classes to choose from.
I used to play Astrologer. My very first class and my very first souls game. It was a disaster. Then tried Prisoner because i love rapiers. Went pretty good until my save file stopped working. 3rd attempt. Bandit. I cannot tell you how much fun i had parryguarding the hell out of the game :P The only class i could imagine playing as well is Warrior.
I just started the game and started as a Wretch because I thought that was easy mode. My son has been playing since the game came out. After I already started playing. It wasn't that hard. I didn't start getting any kind of armor until I got to that ruin with the chest down stairs under it. That's where I gained my Grace Companion and was able to start putting points into leveling stats. It wasn't hard getting through it. So don't sweat it starting as wretch. I dropped all that armor I gained at the ruins and put on Vular armor because it's lighter and don't have penalties from rolling. One thing I've learned, since I've been playing since last Saturday and am now level 50 is that things are killed easier with less risk to you by attacking things on horseback that are walking on the roads. The Vulgar soldiers that drop about a 1000 runes each, I sneak up and backstab with a greatsword, one shotting them. Make sure to increase your strength and weapon level enough to one shot them because if you don't kill them right away from a stealth attack, you lose lock on them and they get back up and attack you and they hit hard. Notes are nice too. Some are silly but some are helpful, such as attacking the dragon on the bridge from a rock on the left side of the bridge with a bow or crossbow. Make sure to have a lot of ammunition for it because they don't do much damage but the dragon's breath weapon doesn't reach you, unless you stand there unmoving, then they will eventually get to you. That location is a great place to farm runes and level up.
I Play warrior but I use fast sword and shield for blocking. I use shield and Rolling when i need. I hit fast and go back. You DON'T have to Play warrior with two blades. This class have even shield from the beginning.
I've recently started playing and regaquit after not being able to go thought the secret room at the end of the tutorial. It's where you need to use 2 keys to open it. Not realising that I've choose one of the hardest class for beginners. 😂

You can purchase a bow from second merchant you encounter under a bridge area very close to the first site of grace. Any character can have a short bow within the first hour of the game.
@@Jev55 and you don't even need to be levelled for it since you can just 2 hand a bow. you're mostly gonna use it to get the attention of one enemy in a pack anyways, so damage isn't even important.
never played any dark souls games and though the prophet blindfold looked badass and went with that! Suffered for a good while but then actually learned about the class haha
I went in blind and picked Warrior. Only a few hours in, but I'm holding my own so far.
im still stuck at the character creator screen XD
Wretch is so much fun
I'm learning the game well because I need to use everything to win
I started with Warrior and could not beat the first boss no matter how hard I tried. I went back and started over with Confessor and it is SO much easier. LOL
Samurai all the way
Katana skill is OP AF for me not to mention the bow which you can farm arrow from the wild
Just purchased this and doing ,y research on what to start with. Never played Elden Ring before either.
Dayum, hard to choose between Vagabond and Samurai
Astrology was my favorite. I had lots of fun playing this class , so easy .
First play through playing as the Confessor
Wretch has always been my favorite, starting a game by collecting trash i think is more satisfying then to start with good stuff
the samurai shield does not absorb 100% damage but you're right on everything else.
You failed to mention that you can pick up a 2nd katana early on and dual wield/power stance katanas from the beginning, making you an overlord
The Astrologer best Royalty class i will play as in my first playthrough PS5 first time never played Elden Ring
Definitely the most helpful class review I've read. Ranking the classes by play difficulty was perfect.
Honestly, this has to be the most amazing "starting class for beginners" list. I can't think of switching any of these up. This is perfect imo
No. The perfect one would be Wretch in number 1 (and I'm dead serious).
@@rKhael53 Nope. Not at all. You have to be joking
Just remember: no matter what you start with, no matter what you choose, you can go back on it by changing your stats through level up
1:27 I’m not even going to say it
You heard about those warriors from Hammerfell? They’ve got curved swords… CURVED SWORDS!!
Ive never played any souls game before, ran 3 different builds at the beginning of the game until i figured out that prisoner is the right fit for me. It really just takes a bit of time to find the right one for you.
yeah i love the estoc its such a fun weapon probably the msot versatile weapon in the game
No matter what I was going to play the samurai, but now this gives me more of a reason to.
I started playing a few weeks ago and started with Vagabond. I glad I chose wisely. Tho I think I may need to try astrologer and samurai.
Well I chose warrior first because the thought of dual wielding katanas was to amazing and I regret nothing
Started with Vagabond. Going pretty well.
Thanks, my man. I'll try Samurai (again) and if I don't wanna use it I'll go for Astrologer.
This is my first sould game and I chose the Bandit class cause I love stealth builds. Is it really the second hardest class after wretch? 😭
Just got this game after it won goty and boy am I glad that the Samurai sounds so strong because that's what I was planing on playing as
Anyone in 2025 just starting?
I am into the pain. So I chose the wretch. I gleefully die constantly.
I turned a confessor into a crazy strong faith/strength build 🤷
I picked bandit, didn't regret it, bleed is awesome.
Wretch is not the equivalent to deprived its actually easier long term because of it's flexible bases and starting level 1 you don't feel like you're wasting levels going for any build
Here is an actual educated summary of this games “origins” unlike this video with so many blatant lies:
Vagabond: best for a durable tanky build
Warrior: best for a quick fighter build
Hero: best for a strong heavy weapon warrior build
Bandit: best for a quick ranged/ rogue build
Astrologer: best for a intelligence based mage build
Prophet: best for a faith based mage/ healer build
Samurai: best for a all around dexterous and durable fighter
Prisoner: best for a intelligence mage and quick fighter hybrid
Confessor: best for a faith mage and fighter hybrid
Wretch: best for a build that doesn’t fit for a direction that none the other starting classes go.
Wretch best class cuz you can keep visiting renala for all the builds xD
So I just finished my 7th run through Elden Ring and have fully achieved probably the weirdest build I've ever done. Started off as an astrologer that would use spirit ashes as offense, but ended the game with the TANKIEST Mage ever with no summons. Any who, wretch fam, rise up
If you want a warrior with more defense. Use samauri and grab the second ugitana
Started as a samurai but 2 hours in and watching this im switching to confessor they look fire
I run with the Bandit level 220 currently. My bandit does everything but still learning to master high spells
Astrologer look good for beginners because you can fight at a distance but what about when dealing with bosses that are always in you face and won’t give you time to cast spells? I haven’t played this game but from what I’ve seen, these bosses can be aggressive.
Warrior seems so fun should I pick it as my first class
First time ever playing a dark souls style game. Just never got into it before. But I picked my class before watching this and just so happened to pick the samurai, so I guess it works out. Thanks for the info though, I’ll keep it in mind if and when I decide to start fresh after I get a grip on how to actually play the game, haha
the prisoners sheild isnt useless. It has a much bigger parry window than other sheilds. it isnt meant for tanking.
yep. prisoner also gets a thrusting sword which has higher crit damage than other swords so goes hand in hand with the parry.
Sooo no one liked bandit? Only me?
Bandit master class
Just started playing not too long ago, my first souls like game. Either I'm very stubborn or this game seems a bit easy. Especially with the fact that I went wretch and still don't really know what to do. Getting small pointers from my brother every so often.
I'm now around level 50
Hey are you still playing this game I'm an astrologer and on lol 28 I'm stuck lol
@@sethseth9359 unfortunately I have not being playing for a while, but the best thing that can help you by far is the wiki.
This helped me out because I didn't know what I was going Into for the classes of the game now I know which one I'm going with when I get the game
I'm a bandit and I'm a speedster I keep pressure and make sure staggered and effects go off I literally help
Bandit.
I cannot tell you how much fun i had parryguarding the hell out of the game :P
The only class i could imagine playing as well is Warrior.
I’m not convinced you know what a double-edged sword is.
As someone who played as the knight in dark souls I think it's pretty clear what I'm gonna choose
Thanks bro I'm literally about to start the game now. Think I'm going to go with the astrologer
Samurai’s shield is NOT 100% physical reduction. The confessors, however, is.
I Play warrior but I use fast sword and shield for blocking. I use shield and Rolling when i need. I hit fast and go back. You DON'T have to Play warrior with two blades. This class have even shield from the beginning.
I started out just today and I chose samurai class just because it sounded cool. Good to know that my choice was right :)
I've recently started playing and regaquit after not being able to go thought the secret room at the end of the tutorial. It's where you need to use 2 keys to open it. Not realising that I've choose one of the hardest class for beginners. 😂
