My mom and my mom in law both made Poor Man's Bread. Flour, sugar, shortening, yeast w/ warm water, salt. Nothing else. It was deliciously! I still make it yet today at 81. Everybody loves it! That's all the bread besides biscuits or cornbread that we had growing up.
Your recipe sounds alot like my moms, she made 10 loaves a week. She would make small batches for rolls as needed or cinnamon rolls. There was 8 of us kids, however 2 of those siblings came after I was married with babies of my own, lol. She taught me to make bread when I was 9, I love making it. There is nothing that smells more like the safety and comfort of home than the aroma of baking bread.
I used to make 5 lbs of bread at a time when I was 13 years old. Mom and Dad would ask me if I wanted to stay home from school and bake bread and I always said, 'ok'. I was a straight A student and made the honor roll every time so it was ok for me to miss every once in a while. I treasure those days when my parents were alive. I used a whole 5 lbs of flour, cake yeast, lard, sugar and water. Dad always made bean soup on that day. I didn't like bean soup as a teen so I just ate my bread along with the rest of my siblings. This video was a joy to watch. Blessings to everyone.
I made this. I ended up with 6 loaves of bread, 43 dinner roll and 1 pizza crust. This is the best tasting bread I have ever made. Will be making again. Thank you for the video and recipe.
I just love watching your videos. You can also put some of your dough into a plastic container that is 4 times bigger than your your dough and put it in your refrigerator with a cover on it. It slow rises in the fridge and will keep well for about 4 or 5 days. You can pinch off some dough to make pizza. It gives a different taste and texture like a pizzeria. I used to do this when my kids were small. You just take it out and let it rest for an hour before you roll it out. I will keep watching for your great tips. 😊
I ran on to you about three months ago. I also LOVE watching you & learning! Your voice is very calming 😌 & makes me calm. Very theraputic!! I am 62. I have never made bread before, but I'm going to start this week!! I'm recently a widow. My husband passed away quickly on Oct. 6th, 2022. I know he is in Heaven, but man I sure miss him!! My heart is broken. 😥😢😭💔 Thank you again Miss Lori! God bless you! I love you!! 🤗❤🙏🙏
I know it probably sounds crazy but I find that watching you make bread is therapeutic for me. You're so calm which makes me feel calm too. It helps to forget all of the craziness going on today. I also love to bake so I'm learning too. Love your channel.☺

@@jtharp9265 For the past few decades some of us have stopped learning to be self-sufficient. I wish I would've learned to grow my own vegetables, etc. Good for you for making & selling your own bread. I wish you much success & that God will bless your endeavors.
I love making those little loaves, and give at Christmas with a 1/4 pint blackberry jelly, and some cookies and home made candies.and a single Cinnamon roll ..my grandmother was a school cook and taught me so much..I miss both my grandmothers. I enjoy your videos alot.
Oh don’t worry about this being long. I could watch and listen to you for hours. I love to handle dough also and I love to watch you handle it. It looks like it is perfect.
Lori, I love your videos so much. I also love making bread and cooking in general. I'm now 73 but I started when I was 14 years old making 7 loaves of bread every Saturday morning for our large family. I've had a love affair with it ever since. Watching your videos is so fun and I always learn something new or get a new twist on something old. Thank you.

I wish ALL your videos were longer, girl! The atmosphere of each one is so warm, and homey, and comforting. I'll take more of THAT any day! And this was simply amazing to watch. I've never made homemade bread before. This doesn't look as daunting and hard as I would have thought. I might just have to try it. Thanks so much for sharing with us. God bless.
You give us so many good recipes I want to give this to you. It is how to make your own bread flour out of all purpose flour. Take one cup of flour and take one tablespoon out. Now put one tablespoon of Gluten flour in . Now you have bread flour.
With everything in high speed these days, you are a breathe of fresh air. You’re a great teacher and your voice is soothing🦋Thx. New sub.from Connecticut.
My Grandma baked a large batch of bread in a huge mixing bowl, every week. She would give me a small piece of dough to knead and put in a small tart pan to bake. She did the same with my children. Such wonderful memories... No guest ever left her house without a loaf of bread to take with them. Watching you make bread brings back those memories. Thank you.
Just made half the recipe. I got 4 loaves and 18 rolls for the freezer. Since it is 2 weeks from Thanksgiving, I’ll save the rolls until then. Thanks !
My grandmother was French. Had several children to raise by herself , she sold vegetables from her garden but her mainstay was her bread and pies etc. just a lil gal but so full of life. Quilts by the hundreds all hand sewn. Our children today are not being shown the good side of life. We can change this.
I liked the start of the video when you started to just move your hand around in the flour. You're appreciating the texture. Because you love what you're doing. They also sell kiddie pools at Dollar General, don't go that route.... that is too much dough. 😉 With regard to research recipes, Etc... Don't allow destination disease. Every vidio you make or have made even several years ago, are such a blessing to watch! Takes me back to when I was young. My mother made bread in a similar pan, bigger though, she made 50 pounds of flour at a time. Never had to freeze any as there was fifteen of us. Coming home from school to the smell of fresh baked bread, eaten hot with butter and jam!!!! She passed away 30 years ago would be 110 now. You make my heart smile with the memories!! ❤ shirley in western montana.
This looks soooo DELICIOUS, Miss Laurie. It reminds Me of when I was a little girl and I would be next to Our Mom as She made Our bread. Thank you Ms. Lori for showing me how to make bread! My Grandma and 2 Aunts made bread on the 1st Saturday of the month - it was just so good! One year I got a bread making machine but it's just not the same. I'm heading back to the store for flour now, I'm learning what to keep in my pantry because you taught me 😊💕
You are such a Inspiration. So many people are missing a slower pace of life. Too much rushing and hurrying. Slow down people if you can and enjoy each day.

We are so like minded I felt so at home with you! I don’t watch tv and wanted something really good to watch come fall so I’ll start at the beginning of your videos and watch them all. You have such a sweet spirit and I thanked the Lord for bringing you my way. Blessings
Thoroughly enjoyed this! I used another of your bread recipes today and made bread for the first time...I'm 67! It was great!! So, thanks Lori! I love cooking with you.
When you were making your dressing, I remember my mom cutting up the gizzard, heart and liver into her dressing. The onions and celery were finely chopped , one egg, sage and salt and pepper, pulled together with chicken broth and stuffed into the chicken or turkey. Unbelievably delicious. Mom always bought day old bread. ❤️👍🤗
Since the pandemic started I’ve been making large batches of bread for my extended family. No one ever turns down a fresh warm loaf of bread! Your video is inspirational-my max batch size has been 5 lb of flour. Getting down my huge yellow ware bowl
My Mom would make bread every month, we were a family of 7. She made lots of loaves. There was always a "deformed" loaf that was last one from the oven. We would tear it apart right then and put butter on our peice. So good!. And because it took so long to make the bread she always had a big ole pot of beans for dinner. Sometimes it was chili beans. Best meal ever.
My mama passed way to soon, but watching you make the bread takes me back when she would make at least 3 loaves a week. I can still taste it. I think this fall I’ll start making some! 🥰
Cindy Ledbetter why wait till fall? Now in early morning when the sun starts to rise is the greatest time to start making your memories of bread making. It’s my favorite time to make bread and the smell is heaven on earth. ♥️
I love the lifestyle of Miss Lori and Mr. Brown. I want so much to live in green rural country with a garden area again, grown my own crops, make my own bread and such with a kind, living husband. What a dream life.
Hello from eastern Arizona. The large tub you are using to make your bread in looks just like the baby bath tub my Mom had in the 1940's. It was mine! She used it for lots of things! Thank you for bringing back that memory! 💜💜💜🎵🙏✝️

Hi Lori, This was wonderful!! I had a chore to take care of...filing!!...and you kept me company!! It was so nice having you...and your soothing voice...here in my home!! Loved watching how you make bread...and all the tips you shared about packaging the hot rolls, and pizza dough...were wonderful!! Love seeing the quick pic of you and Vickie at the end!! Thanks again for all you share!! Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️
I'm late getting in on this one-- it just popped up today, and I'm so glad. I love everything about yeast breads. Love the smell, how the dough looks and feels. I love working with it, and I love watching someone else work with it. I would happily have watched every minute of time you spent with your bread dough. If I hadn't already made bread yesterday, I'd go right out to the kitchen and make up another batch right now. Thank you for a beautiful time spent with you in your warm and comfortable kitchen.
I am sooo HAPPY that you made more then two loads of bread. I was looking for a recipe that made more! I remember coming home from school and my mom had the whole kitchen table FULL OF BEAUTIFULLY MADE BREAD! She timed it so we could have butter on the warm slices of her tasty bread. I loved it! Thank you once again for your GREAT VIDEO! 👍❤️😊. I’m for sure going to try your recipe! 👍
When I was a young child back in the '50's my next door neighbor baked bread at least once a week. As I grew into my teens she used to tell everyone that I could tell when her Hoosier cabinet door opened and she took the yeast out. She had a big bowl (not enamel I don't think) but about the same size as yours. Thanks for the memories.
Your bread looks so good and the texture when sliced looks amazing. I haven't baked bread for so long, however you have inspired me. When my daughter gets home from school, I am going to bake some with her. The young need to be knowing that cooking from scratch is the way forward and not buying all these ready prepared meals from supermarkets. Love and Blessing to you and Mr Brown xx
New to your channel and boy does it bring back memories! My mother’s side of the family was poor. They didn’t have fancy homes but it sure was filled with love and good food! My aunt used to bake bread for the church and to give away. I used to stay with her for entire summers as a little boy and would watch her knead the bread and bake other things. She made so much bread that she got to where she never measured much, rather went by look and feel. I learned to bake from her but never learned to bake her bread, which I regret now, but watching you is like watching her (and you and I are not far apart in age). I would love to cook and bake like you do but I’m just a single guy so I fear so much would go to waste. I do bake a lot during Christmas and give it away to neighbors and friends. Thanks for your channel and for grounding me again. We get too caught up in trying to live like the Jones’s when a simpler life is so much healthier. Still hard work, but worth it! Bless your heart for bringing us into your home!
I do have to say....I have made bread a lot, but...I have never seen anyone make such a big batch of it. You amaze me. That’s a lot if work. Good going Mr’s Brown. God bless 🙏🏻🤗🙏🏻
My little grandmother used to bake prob around 14 loaves at a time. She used her huge old roaster and made the best bread. Thanks for the memories, Mrs Brown. God bless you, as well.
There's noting better than fresh hot bread with soft butter! I love making bread. Your dough looks really nice and easy to work with. Thank you for the great video's you always put up.
Love this video! I love making homemade bread and rolls. I also knead mine by hand, so relaxing. Thank you for the tip on when you add your salt, I will try that next time. Doesn't matter how long your videos are, I'll always watch till the end.
I just made my FIRST from scratch bread. I pulled you up on my 55" TV and followed you step by step. My bread turned out ok. We just laughed at the shape of it, but it was delicious anyway. I learned everything about baking and cooking from my little Arkansas mom. We lost her two years ago. I still wrap from time to time. You've made my life a little better everytime I turn your videos on. Thanks you Miss Laurie. I just love you:). May God continue to bless you in Jesus Name.

Really enjoy your videos, very soothing, found myself smiling thru the entire bread making process. Takes me back to a quieter, simpler, peaceful time many many years ago when I was a kid back in WV. Bless you for all you do. Happy to have found you - cheers !
I just found your videos this week and have enjoyed watching you. I bake bread for Sunday dinners alot and always bake an extra for my son to take home. I also make bread for gifts. I'm going to try your hot roll idea. Thanks for sharing 😊
You sound like my late father’s family from Augusta, GA 😊 thank you so much for the video! I just learned how to make single loaves, this is a challenge for the near future! Thank you 😊
Saturday was always bread-baking day. We ALWAYS ate sandwiches for lunch as a money and time saving trick. I made our family's bread by "feel" not measure. I would eyeball (though not very well 😂) my water, (which determined how many loaves we got), estimated my salt, yeast, and oil, then added my flour until it "felt right". Sometimes I ended up with 6 big loaves of bread, sometimes 10. And sometimes I added leftover potatoes. Sometimes I added cooked oatmeal. No measurements-ever. Always by "feel". I always froze it so it stayed fresh for the week. My bread was always a well-loved. Kneading was therapeutic.
BTW you must get this all day long on your comments, I love your voice, the accent & I love the quiet peacefulness of the videos besides learning how to make recipes of traditional, comforting meals. These are important skills to add to your repertoire!
I love watching you pinch rolls, I’ve never seen this done before or heard of it! Your family are so lucky to have you teach them how to cook. Bless you😀💕

Oh, it's just life skills, and you can do it! Xoxoxo

I could watch you forever. As soon as I have freezer space, I will do it. Thank you so much.
Thanks mary, loved keeping you company!
I love making bread but I also like to learn from others too xx
Thanks I'm the same way! Xoxoxo
I'm a school cook from West Virginia I sub 8 years and I was a full time cook for 29 years before I retire. Love to watch you.
Thank you,xoxoxo
When I was a young child back in the '50's my next door neighbor baked bread at least once a week. As I grew into my teens she used to tell everyone that I could tell when her Hoosier cabinet door opened and she took the yeast out. She had a big bowl (not enamel I don't think) but about the same size as yours. Thanks for the memories.
Thats wonderful
Your bread looks so good and the texture when sliced looks amazing. I haven't baked bread for so long, however you have inspired me. When my daughter gets home from school, I am going to bake some with her. The young need to be knowing that cooking from scratch is the way forward and not buying all these ready prepared meals from supermarkets. Love and Blessing to you and Mr Brown xx
Is there oil in it?
I appreciate that you showed making the bread all by hand, not using a mixer and dough hook!
Thank you for the Wonderful comment, it's so true, sounds like you had a great childhood, with beautiful memories, xoxoxo
When I was younger I made home made bread all the time.We went for 5 years without buying any bread in town. I made loaves buns and cinnamon rolls.

Did I miss when you added any shortening...or did you not? Just have to ask

I loved this video! I just halved your recipe, for me to try out. I have 4 loaves of bread and 18 rolls. I'm excited for a taste test!
Could you share quantities you used to half this recipe? Thanks
Another beautiful educational video💗 those little bread loaves so thoughtful🍞 Your so blessed your a blessing!🤗💗
BTW you must get this all day long on your comments, I love your voice, the accent & I love the quiet peacefulness of the videos besides learning how to make recipes of traditional, comforting meals. These are important skills to add to your repertoire!
