Well, Miss Lori, I sure do appreciate your opening comments on how easy sourdough starter is, because I've been on a wild roller-coaster ride for a week with my first attempt. My recipe started out like yours, but my starter never did show any sign of life. It just looked like pancake batter. And I was feeding it, and adding water, and soon the batter had brownish water floating on top of it, so much so that I quit adding water and just added flour, and nary a bubble to indicate activity. It got a little of that sourdough smell to it, but after a second feeding without water, it went to smelling like a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Pretty nice, but not what I was expecting. Then yesterday, I noticed it seemed to be growing--still no bubbles--but I put a rubber band on the jar and kept watch, and sure enough it was rising. This morning (day 7) I got up find it rose right up to the lid and dripped down the sides! And no lack of bubbles. There were bubbles everywhere! There was a bit of a business about the lid getting stuck, I'm sure you know what happens when hydrated flour dries. By now it's calmed back down, but I'm not sure whether to feed it, decant it into a discard jar, bake with it, or run from it. Probably should have come and watched your video first. 🤣🤣🤣

This was such an interesting video. I've never made English muffins, but our family dearly loves them. Thank you, Ms Lori, for being such a good teacher. I also appreciate how you encourage those of us who might be a little intimidated when trying new things. Love you both!
Ms.Lori, I personally love English muffins too. I think they're fantastic toasted with just butter on them, but strawberry jam or peach jam make them even better. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Watched it again just to be sure my process will be the same; loved hearing the excitement in Mr. Browns voice about the butter and jelly on the english muffins. What a great feeling it must always be to cook for such a wonderful husband. Give him a gold star for always supporting your hard work in the kitchen. The two of you were made in heaven!!!
Oh, they look so scrumptious. I wish we were neighbors. I would so enjoy time visiting, cooking baking, gardening, canning, etc. With you and Mr. Brown. I'm excited to make these. I've always wanted to make them but thought they'd be super difficult but you made it look so easy. Thank you Miss Lori !. Your such a sweetie pie!
Just this past week end on Friday I made my first batch of butter and on Saturday I made my first ever English muffins. On Sunday morning I had toasted English muffins with my butter and my raspberry jam I made last fall. Martha Stewart, move over. Makes me proud.
Miss Lori thank you for sharing this! I’ve always been kind of intimidated by homemade bread AND homemade sourdough but you make it look so easy, I think I may just try it!! ☺️
My 16 year old granddaughter came over today and we watched this video and made your english muffins together. They were so good. I'll never buy them again. I will keep these made all the time and freeze some for when I need them like you showed. It was a wonderful time with my granddaughter, too, thank you Miss Lori!
Thank you Miss Lori! I just finished making sourdough English muffins for the first time ever according to your recipe and with the help of your video. They turned out perfect!
Thank you Miss Lori for this excellent video! You are so patient and kind when you explain the steps to us. You make this recipe look so easy and manageable, I will definitely have to try it. Years ago, my circle of lady friends passed around sourdough starter for us to feed and use. Honestly, I was scared to death of it!! LOL! It looked like a living creature inside my container and I had no idea what I was getting in to with it. It's hysterical when I think back on it now. I sure do love listening to you both and appreciate Mr. Brown taste-testing the food and reporting what he thinks about it. God bless you both.
Miss Lori, every recipe I make of yours always comes out so good! This one I can’t wait to try! Thank you for your time and helpful advice. God bless you and Mr. Brown.
Started mine last week and I'm doing bread today and chocolate mini cakes tomorrow. You touch my heart and soul with just your voice ❤I lost my mom a few years ago and your sweet voice reminds me of her so much!!
I've been wanting to make starter for a while but my apprehension of thinking I won't do it right has kept me from doing it. Thank you so much for helping me realize it doesn't have to be so hard and motivating me to start. I'm starting my starter today.
Use it, share it, discard some if needed, feed it, watch it, we Love sourdough taste, but some recipes I include yeast for a better rise and texture, and the fermenting is better for your gut
I made these. I have teenage sons. They will be all gone at ratep they going. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I love English muffins...still the only reason that made eat egg McMuffins. First item into my Bosch mixer. Thanks again.
Hi Ms. Lori, I am very new to this chanel and new to sour dough. I saw your video from start to finish, and it seems to be very simple, but im not sure what happens with the other sour dough starter once you have used a cup of the starter as you did to do the English muffins? Also, how much sour dough does one use for let's say a regular bread? Can you please do a video kind of explaining what happens to the leftover starter and bread. Thank you so much! I have seen others, but yours was easier to follow. ❤
These are beautiful and look So delicious! I’ve been afraid to attempt baking with sour dough. I really appreciate the effort you put into sharing this process! This is so helpful! Thank You🥰
I love your starter’s night cap! I used my canning jar funnel and it made the cleanup easier… when I made this in the 70s we called it Sweet Herman because it was not so sour. My house is so cold this winter I think I will use my seed warming mat and see how it works… thanks Miss Lori. I plan on making these and freezing the rest. 🥰💕👍
I cooked these on my comal and used a pizza pan as the topper. I made a half batch to try it out and I only got 9, but I may have had them too thick… the seed mats were too warm but I found my stove light kept the oven warm enough to let the dough rise nicely. Nine days later I’ve made the second batch, I got a dozen this time, my neighbor is hoping that they pass my QC test and they can try some, 😂. I hope so too, because I don’t h e spice to freeze them.
I have to say this is the best English muffin recipe I have tried! So much flavor & very easy to do, thank you. I’m going to continue trying the rest of the recipes that you have. You are amazing so delightful, kind and just all around Real. Thank you.
Those English muffins sure are pretty! I never imagined they would be easy to make and now I can't wait to make them. Time to make up a batch of starter! Thank you Miss Lori for showing us how to make them. Btw, I think you forgot to put the dry milk in the recipe below the video.
Thank you so much for this recipe for sour dough. I would love to have a list of all the different ways you use it. I did learn last year that you can actually freeze the sour dough starter if you find that you aren't using it up fast enough or if you are going on vacation, etc. I think I even read online that you could dehydrate it also. Thanks again for this great video. Hugs!
Miss Lori, I can’t wait to try this starter and make these delicious English muffins! Love your channel and love y’all! God bless you and Mr. Brown and your family! ❤️✝️

What a wonderful video Miss Lori.... You make it so easy for us.... Sourdough always seemed like a difficult thing but this video showed me differently.... Oh and those english muffins looks so scrumptious... Thank you again.... Stay warm and safe!! With love from Kentucky!
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!! At 40 I'm finally starting to "homestead" like I've always wanted to. I've been wantin to start my own bread and LOVE sourdough. I decided, because my arthritis is gettin so bad, I'm going to get a bread machine. Anyhow, of all the other starter videos I've seen, I'd so much rather use your instructions. You make it all so easy! Glad y'all made it through this winter!
Thank you so much for this step by step video, I am going to try this recipes out, you make it look so easy Ms. Lori, and Mr. Brown loved them which was awesome to see how much he enjoyed eating. God bless both of you always and thanks again Ms. Lori.
Just before we moved I swore I was going to find a big ol mason jar for sour dough starter. We are moved and settled in. Today I found the mason jar. I'll be starting my sour dough starter. Thank you Miss Lori.❤
Sourdough starters are so healthy and delicious in breads- pancakes- English muffins and crepes! Happy to say my starter is 2 years old. It seems to go to sleep in the refrigerator which is great in between breads. 😋❤️👍😊
Me either. I’m going to try Mrs. Loris method and find a warmer place to keep mine. Probably in my oven with the light on. That should be about 80 degrees. I think my kitchen is too Chilly. ❤ 🍞
If your having problems getting it to go . Just check and make sure your flour is unbleached . Sometimes it is easier to start with rye flour to get it established.
@Green orchard I saw a video yesterday that said wheat flour is the easiest to get started. Like you, she also said that you have to use unbleached flour or it will never work.
O my! I am your age and have never known how to make this I can not say thank you enough. I pray blessings over you and Mr Brown always stay warm and stay safe God bless you both. Much love from SW Virginia ❤
Thank you Ms Lori, for taking the guesswork out of something that seemed like it might be more complicated to make. Your clear and simple instructions make sourdough English muffins doable, even in my tiny one-room studio apartment. 👍🏼
Thank you Mrs. Lori! You certainly made the process look really easy and the english muffins looked wonderful. I've never made them before but when it warms up a little I'm going to try. One must not covet thy neighbor's wood cook stove, but in all honesty I'm sure wishing I had one these days! Be blesssed.
Those are the most beautiful English muffins! I haven't made or used sour dough starter in several years. It used to be a staple in our house when I was growing up. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us each step. I truly appreciate it! I am just out of a month long hospital stay and still unable to walk yet. But as soon as I get back in the kitchen this is 1st on my list! Sending lots of love to you both. God bless you! ❤🍽😘🙏
They look beautiful! We are experiencing the same ice storm today. In the middle of other jobs today but will make these a priority! I think I would slice them before individual wrap and freeze because I would forget to take them out of the freezer the night before. 😊 Stay warm.
I'm so excited to trying this sour dough starter and this recipe for your English muffins. I love that you have foil or foil protectors under your burners or eyes. I use foil to help with spills and easy clean up. Love you Lori and Mr. Brown. Y'all live a simple, loving and caring life and with your devotion to our Lord! Doesn't get any better.
Question. What do you do with the rest of the starter? Do you keep feeding? How often? Keep on the counter? ( I hope I didn't miss something. ) The English muffins look delicious. My Daddy said Laripin! 😋😄
If you live in a cold climate like northern US or Canada, it may take about 14 days before it can be used to make bread with. So if your starter isn't active in the time line that she is giving you, don't give up. She didn't speak about the smells of the starter going through the process of fermentation either. You can have smells of sweetness, finger nail polish and even beer. This is normal, just keep feeding your starter. about day 3 or 4 you can use your starter in making pancakes, waffles, flat breads biscuits etc. Make sure you keep the starter in the fridge when you aren't using it and feed it once a week. Whenever you use it, also make sure to replenish your starter by the amount you used.
My mother in law kept hers on the counter at all times, she fed hers probably 2 , 3 times a week, use it, discarded some and shared it, smells can differ yes, but all good
@@thebucksstophere8870 Sourdough starter don't die unless it gets mold. Keep it in fridge and make sure to feed it at least once a week if you aren't using it. I've had mine for 13 years now. A good rule to keep, is that every recipe may need adjustment, don't follow a recipe to a T, but rather go for the feel of the bread dough. Your water and flour ratio will differ all the time. I live in Canada and I know people who live 9,000 ft elevation and have no problems with sourdough starter. She also keeps her starter on the counter.
I tried this with the regular flour from the grocery store and it would always die. Tells me just how nutrient deprived that flour really is! So I now have wheat berries that I’m going to mill tonight (I bought a hand crank mill machine this summer), so we’ll see how it does with the real fresh flour instead! 🙏🏼✨🥰
Miss Lori those look so yummy ! Everything you make looks delicious! I have never tried to make sourdough ,but you have given me the confidence to try it !
Thank you so much for showing us this. You make this process so easy to understand. 🥰 Can you show us more sourdough recipes please? And how to feed it?
I cannot wait to start my sour dough starter. I will have to work on getting a warm place for it to ferment. My home temp is usually around 67 degrees (and yes, I have a problem getting my bread dough to rise). I may have to give in and buy a dough rising box for my baked goods that need a rise or two and use it to ferment the starter too. I am definitely excited to try this recipe!! Thanks Ms. Lori...you and Pa stay warm and safe during the nasty weather this week❤
@Whippoorwill Holler I have used one, but not always successful. In the warmer weather, I have no problem... so much for trying to save a penny. Thanks, Ms. Lori💕
@Tracey Johnston I have used my oven/oven light. I then went to a preheat of oven at its lowest temperature and sometimes set a pot of boiling water in the oven, too. I work at finding the best options...last resort if bread is not to my liking, it then becomes bread crumbs or croutons. Definitely no waste, lol.
Bless you for this one. I just let a one year old sourdough die as I could not keep up with it. This sounds so simple! The measuring and getting rid of some before feeding each time seemed so wasteful in the way I was doing it before. When I thought about Mr. B's gran having it on the counter for so long and the history lesson about the chuckwagons having it with them, they certainly didn't have any way of being persnickity with it in that way of life. Also, I kept the old sourdough in fridge until i used it and then the process of getting rid of some of the old before feeding again. It seemed to be loosing strength over time and not producing the fine product that yours looks like! I'm on the 4th day and all is going well. God Bless you BOTH. Of course, the bible readings are always a highlight special time! You guys are a treasure! 82 year old being so blessed by you both!
Thank you Miss Lori, I've been looking for an easy sourdough starter recipe! How those muffins look amazing, wish there was smell-a-vision! lol Hugs, Brenda
The starter is young so that’s why she’s making muffins instead of bread. She’s using the starter instead of throwing away a discard until the starter is more mature. Yeast insures this recipe’s success. After the starter is fed another week or two and it gets stronger then no yeast is necessary and will be able to make bread as well.

So THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for the time and effort you put into making these valuable videos. Blessings upon you and your family! 🙏❤
Thank you for your kind words
This was such an interesting video. I've never made English muffins, but our family dearly loves them. Thank you, Ms Lori, for being such a good teacher. I also appreciate how you encourage those of us who might be a little intimidated when trying new things. Love you both!
Ms.Lori, I personally love English muffins too. I think they're fantastic toasted with just butter on them, but strawberry jam or peach jam make them even better. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Yes...very EASY, thank you so much and God's continued blessings be upon you and your entire family✨
Thank you it's a good recipe
Wonderful!
Thank you!! I dreaded making sourdough. You made it so easy. I'll start mine tomorrow. Take care.
Ms Lori these look simply amazing! You’ve inspired me to try sourdough for the first time! Thank you and Mr Brown so much!!
Me too! 😊
Wow these look delicious ❤
I’m definitely going to try that starter 🥰
Thank you Miss Lori! I just finished making sourdough English muffins for the first time ever according to your recipe and with the help of your video. They turned out perfect!
Wonderful!
Great job, Shelley!
Lori, that is truly a labor of love and my mouth is watering as I watch Mr. Brown eat his muffin. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you miss Laurie I've always been afraid to make the starter you make it look so good Thank you God-bless
I’m on Day 4 with my starter and it’s got bubbles and a nice, slightly sour smell. I’ll make a loaf of bread tomorrow night. I’m excited!
Wonderful
My all time favorite breakfast is Eggs Benedict so would love to make my own english muffins. Thanks for the video as always....this sounds like fun!
Wonderful!
Those are the prettiest english muffins I've ever seen. Great job Miss Lori. You make everything look so easy.
Thank you Miss Lori for bringing back old ways if baking. This will make some mighty tasty breads. ❤
Mr. Brown sounds like my husband, he also loves english muffins. Thank you so much for this recipe!!!!! Love you both!!
Thank you
These are beautiful and look So delicious! I’ve been afraid to attempt baking with sour dough. I really appreciate the effort you put into sharing this process! This is so helpful! Thank You🥰
Well woo hoo!! My 80 year old mother is going to be so excited to know about this! Thank you!
Thank you for this recipe! I love when you make a "mess" because it makes me feel that I am not alone in the mess-making. LOL! 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Thank you thank you thank you. You are so kind to share with us.
Hugs!
Lori...EXCELLENT. Sourdugh Dough Starter and your English Muffins. FANTASTIC. Thanks for sharing. Just enjoy your Videos so much.
Thank you so much!
Miss Lori, I can’t wait to try this starter and make these delicious English muffins! Love your channel and love y’all! God bless you and Mr. Brown and your family! ❤️✝️
Thanks so much
I just stopped by to get a reliable sour dough starter demo. I had no idea english muffins were cooked stovetop, not baked! Thank you Miss Lori! Peace and Blessings to you and Mr. Brown and everyone!🌻🍞🧈
Love me some English muffins! I can’t wait to try these. Thanks Lori
Oh man oh man these are better than store bought, I just made this this evening using your recipe and they are the best. Thank you for the recipe
Sourdough starters are so healthy and delicious in breads- pancakes- English muffins and crepes! Happy to say my starter is 2 years old. It seems to go to sleep in the refrigerator which is great in between breads. 😋❤️👍😊
Would love to have more info on feeding and making other recipes. Thanks!
Mrs. Lori, I made the sourdough starter now I am ready to make the English muffins. Thank You. Laura M from Rockaway Park, New York
Thank you SO much for this video- just at the right time! I can’t get my starter to go!! 💛
Thank you so much Mrs Lori for these videos! Appreciate you both! Love watching your channel from Kingston TN! ❤
They are so good
They look beautiful!
Keep on counter, feed everyday up to 2 weeks, leave on counter, use it in recipes, share it, discard some if needed, but feed after each use
@@WhippoorwillHoller Thank you Ms Lori.
Thank you for your video! I love hearing your “old ways “ stories. It reminds me of the things I’ve only heard from my grandparents 🥰.
Thank you! These look delicious and I know your house smells so good . Nothing better than sour dough bread!
You are so welcome!
I did it!! The starter for five days and froze 24 English Muffins. Wow! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Wonderful!
My mother in law kept hers on the counter at all times, she fed hers probably 2 , 3 times a week, use it, discarded some and shared it, smells can differ yes, but all good
Can you share your recipe for pancakes and waffles and roll recipe?
I’m wondering about high elevation? And how long can you keep this going or should a person get rid of it after a certain period of time?
@@thebucksstophere8870 Sourdough starter don't die unless it gets mold. Keep it in fridge and make sure to feed it at least once a week if you aren't using it. I've had mine for 13 years now. A good rule to keep, is that every recipe may need adjustment, don't follow a recipe to a T, but rather go for the feel of the bread dough. Your water and flour ratio will differ all the time. I live in Canada and I know people who live 9,000 ft elevation and have no problems with sourdough starter. She also keeps her starter on the counter.
@@WhippoorwillHoller I know chefs who keep theirs on the counter and feeds it twice a day. I also put sourdough in cakes, cookies and pie crusts
Mrs. Lori. I have been watching your videos for a year. I have learned so much. This will be my new adventure. Thank you for sharing.
I tried this with the regular flour from the grocery store and it would always die. Tells me just how nutrient deprived that flour really is! So I now have wheat berries that I’m going to mill tonight (I bought a hand crank mill machine this summer), so we’ll see how it does with the real fresh flour instead! 🙏🏼✨🥰
If you use store flour, make sure it’s not bleached, bleached will kill the yeast.
Very impressive muffins…cannot wait to try them. Thank you Miss Lori!
Miss Lori those look so yummy ! Everything you make looks delicious! I have never tried to make sourdough ,but you have given me the confidence to try it !
Hope you enjoy
Me too . Im making them today
Sure wish you were my mom or grandma, you have such talent that I never got to learn
Thank you so much for showing us this. You make this process so easy to understand. 🥰 Can you show us more sourdough recipes please? And how to feed it?
Never been crazy about English Muffins, but Mr Brown's positive review makes me want to try them! Thanks!
Try a heating pad on low, wrap in a towel
@Whippoorwill Holler I have used one, but not always successful. In the warmer weather, I have no problem... so much for trying to save a penny. Thanks, Ms. Lori💕
I keep my house at 65, but I plan on putting it in my oven with the oven light on. That has worked well for me for my milk kefir.
Mine rises nicely in the oven with just the oven light on.
Thank you sweetie
Will be sure and try those. And the sourdough❤❤❤
I am confused. I thought the sourdough starter eliminated the need for yeast. ??
Yes. I thought the starter was the leavener?
The starter is young so that’s why she’s making muffins instead of bread. She’s using the starter instead of throwing away a discard until the starter is more mature. Yeast insures this recipe’s success. After the starter is fed another week or two and it gets stronger then no yeast is necessary and will be able to make bread as well.
I finally understand how to make sourdough starter Thanks to You
Your English muffins look glorious maybe I will try to make them You make it look SO easy. You are a natural teacher Thanks
Thank you
I just wrote down step-by-step how to do this. Cannot wait to do it for the first time because I've always been scared to death of sourdough bread for some reason. Thank you for the video as usual it's great. You to stay warm and we love
You
GOD Bless! & Thank YOU!
I think you did a fantastic job explaining the process of making a sourdough starter! Thank you!
Those are a labor of love😊
Thank you so much for this video. I have reviewed many this morning and halfway through them I would move on. When Mrs. Lorie’ popped up, I just got a cup of coffee, pen and paper and throughly enjoyed this. I will make them soon, real soon
Thank you so much ❤️
Im very excited and ready to learn how to bake English muffins.
I'm on day 3. I can't wait to use it! I can't thank you enough for sharing this and all your other recipes. You really motivated me to get back to my old self with canning and cooking. Thank you!!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this recipe. I bought a bread machine at a yard sale for 2 dollars. I'm going to make this sourdough recipe tomorrow or next week.
I can’t wait to try this.
Thank you for sharing this recipe! I made delicious bagels with the leftover dough. The English muffins were the best I’ve ever had 😊👍
I love making bread, I have been experimenting different ones this past year. But I have never made sourdough! Very interesting. Thank you. Love your down to earth videos. I’m soon to be 63 and never too old to learn.❤
