We looked forward to Johnny every night. It sucked toward the end of his career when he was off so much and we'd get stuck with Jay Leno as the guest host, but those nights with Carson were classic. Wonderful memories.

Notice in all of these clips, Johnny never interrupted his guests. When they were hot, he let them go, let them shine. Especially a panel like this. It was never about him, he was a pro. He was secure in who he was, not like today's talk show hosts.

Hosts of yesteryear were guilty of being insecure limelight hogs, too, though - i.e. Dick "Prisspot" Cavett. He didn't just roll with the wild antics of John Cassavetes, Peter Falk, and Ben Gazzara during that infamous interview. Instead Old Prisspants walked offstage. What a humorless boob. He even managed to flub up an otherwise easy interview with the superbly charming, easygoing, and surprisingly humble Alain Delon (gorgeous legendary French actor). Idk about other people, but I don't turn on talk shows to watch the hosts, per se, but rather to watch the guests and, if the host is a natural like Carson, to watch the host guide the show along or lean back and let the guests lead when necessary. A contemporary host who is brilliant at his job in the style of Carson is Graham Norton.

The thing I like about Dean Martin’s personality is that in his entire career he never kissed anybody’s ass. And did not expect anybody to kiss his. Unlike his Rat Pack buddy Frank Sinatra.

A few interesting things about this. Bob Hope was a "surprise guest" and wasn't billed even though the show knew he was going to do a walk on. Dean was a genuine surprise and decided to walk on when he heard that Bob was there.
According to Ed McMahon, they wanted to bump George because they were worried that he would kill the momentum. But Johnny insisted on keeping him. It shows you how great Carson's instincts were.

@Stranded NYer The shows today are nothing but "groupthink echo chambers" many comedians today have spoken out about how they cannot make a joke against protected political groups. Yes, there were some cultural issues in the past and always were. None of that was as bad as we have it now, PC and groupthink have run amok, only one point of view is ever allowed and ALL entertainment now is nothing more than an indoctrination on what you are allowed to think. Can not escape politics anymore. I watched those shows as I grew up and there was WAY less politics than anything you see today.

Johnny Carson was the KING of late night talk. And I remember watching this particular show. It was probably one of the best shows Johnny did. I was born in 1958, and I was about 8 years old. My dad worked at International Paper Co. in Mobile, Al. My mom let me stay up one Friday night so I could meet my dad. He was on the 3 to 11 shift that week, so he would get home about 11:30 or a little after.
My grandfather had Johnny Carson on the TV, and I sat with him and watched it waiting on my dad. And for some reason, I got so interested in Johnny's show and his guest that I got hooked on watching him every night at 10 pm.
Mom and dad said I could stay up as long as my school grades stayed good. So I watched Johnny Carson from that night until his very last show.
Late night talk now is crap compared to the Jonny Carson show. Him and all the great stars in those days are surely missed.
Oh, and the smoking? Thoes days most everyone smoked. That was when you could smoke anywhere.
In department and grocery stores, on airplanes and even in hospitals.

Johnny almost always had the "pair of brown shoes" line on his anniversary shows but it really didn't capture the rare, deadpan humor of George's complete set on this show. Delayed broadcasts on a TV he built himself, the dog with no teeth who bit off a little more than he could chew, you remember the war it was in all the papers and not one Japanese aircraft got past Tulsa are a collection of one liners not often equaled. What a group! Judy Carne, who's reaction to a sip of Dean's drink was hilarious, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, George Gobel, Carol Wayne and Bob Wagner is a "Dean Martin Roast" in itself. What an amazing, funny and diverse collection of talent. I really miss these shows.

Friday, Feb 18, 1969. I was visiting in LA, driving around in the evening with the radio on. The DJ I was listening to had attended The Tonight Show taping earlier that evening.(When visiting Hollywood, the show was taped about 5:30-7:00 and fed to New York for broadcast at the usual 11:30 Eastern Time.).He said the show had been especially good and urged listeners to watch when it came on at 11:30 Pacific Time. I made sure I was at my mother's in time to watch it. Loved it. Two days later I was back home in Honolulu. In those days, network shows were broadcast one week later in Hawaii due to no satellite feed available. I told most of my friends to be sure to watch the Tonight show on Friday night at 10:30 Hawaiian Time. Many of them did, and I got to watch it again. After all, this show was targeted to my parent's generation and not to mine. The level of comedy and the ability of Carson, on the fly, to respond to the moment is almost unequaled today. There was no political correctness yet nothing really untoward was said. It's a bygone era. That's very sad yet we do have these videos. Thank God for that.

    • @scottmoore1614

I’m almost 50 and actually missed the classic Carson years the first time around. I first got into late night when Carson was approaching his twilight years and Letterman was coming onto the scene. I always loved Johnny and knew he was a legend even when I was a kid. I loved Dave Letterman, too. But Letterman was different in so many ways and you really sensed the generational contrasts between the two. It almost felt like a father being followed by his unruly son! With the passage of time and Johnny’s own passing, I think I love and appreciate Carson even more. His timing, always impeccable! No one has ever been able to come close to Johnny’s cool professionalism. And he knew how to handle a wild and wooly situation, like the one we see in this classic clip! As for the clip, I love it for its unbridled political incorrectness. Just a bunch of cool guys (and gals) having fun together. As for today’s hosts, they truly do pale in comparison. They lack that razor sharp timing. They don’t have comedy in their bones the way Carson did. Kimmel has gotten too political (along with everyone else in the world it seems) and Fallon just seems like a hyped up kid who I can only take in small doses! Sounds like I’m getting old, but I like to think I’m getting wiser and more discerning.

@Aslan T Vorlon ~ Glad I could answer your question. Carne was a regular, then semi-regular on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In hour, from '68 to '70, but the show ran from '68 to '73. You may already know that. She appeared in numerous TV shows between '62 and '74, and a handful of films as well.

I remember being in bed and at 1130, I would hear the show on and be pissed that I couldn't watch it. This particular episode is like in the top 5 ever of Carson's shows. Hysterical. Forget it. You cannot do this today. And that is sad. A bygone era. The shows today are all terrible. Just like the Oscars. I just come on here and watch the old shows. Cheers!!!

Gobel is almost forgotten today except to vintage guitar collectors who are familiar with the Gibson "George Gobel" model guitar.
But, Gobel was a very funny guy who had his own TV show in the late fifties and was seen on TV for years after that.
Not the heavyweight that Martin, Hope or Carson, etc., were but someone who could be very funny telling the most innocuous story.
Some of his TV show clips are on YT.
