Yeah my dad watched from his recliner too in bvds and socks. Had one of those end tables with the magazine rack and attached early American style lampshade. He drilled holes on one side to hold his pipes and hung floss swords from the lamp switch. Had a bottle of Mentholatum and another of Tums. Mom just let him have his spot. And NOBODY was allowed to take any of his shit or sit there. (No problem since he sat in his underwear!) Grandkids were always trying to steal his fruit flavored Tums because they tasted like SweetTarts ! Sure miss him.

I remember watching this particular show as a 19 year old. And any 19 year old reading this now, I will guarantee you in 40 years time will be saying the same as I am today. WTF has all that time gone?
No. Dean was always sober. It was an act. I loved him as a kid he was my favorite. I still love him and I'm sixty now. The great old time talent and comedians. Nothing but craP today!
He was drunk and that's no joke and no act either. Drunken chainsmokers. Johnny was uncomfortable trying to understand Dean in his stupor. Not a fan at all.
God the longer it goes on the better it gets. I love it. They aren't promoting anything, they aren't fake interviewing with pre-interview questions, they aren't comedians doing their sets as fake-interviews...they're just shooting the shit, improvising, making it up, hilarious, awkward, weird, fantastic conversation. And Dean is definitely not "fake-drunk" here...he's always in control, even when drunk. He's unbelievable. What a gem.
Dean always seem to be more approachable more at ease and more willing to embrace the public like he was just a regular guy I have to admit I did get to see Frank Sinatra perform at a concert in Houston Texas April 1985 at the summit I was with my mom
I liked DM for his way with a song - but I don't see him reaching that peak of perfection Sinatra brought to his "In The Wee Small Hours" album. Like RobTheNotary, I got to see Sinatra in person - at a 1990 London concert here in the UK when his closing rendition of "New York, New York" sent the audience home knowing they'd witnessed a legend in action.
Mark Harrington ... Foster would always get Dean to lose it. I never seen Dean hold himself together when Foster was doing his act. He just loved Foster to pieces.
Witty man Hope was & a bit deaf. Wonder if it was cuz of all his USO tours? I had a charity golf tournament & Bob Hope sat at my table & I laughed all thru dinner. Witty. What a humanitarian!
Dean is buried in a simple crypt near Marilyn Monroe that says DEAN MARTIN (cant remember date of birth except it was in 1917): 1917 - December 25, 1995 "Everybody loves somebody sometime"
Watching this makes me depressed. Those days were really special. Staying up with my folks every Friday night to see Johnny and all the boys, the smoking and drinking, the comforting sound of my parents laughing. You can't match that kind of talent today. There was a real sense of freedom back then that Genx and the Millenials will never be able to experience because of the enslaving, stifling PC we have created for ourselves in this brave new world. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
I had no idea how good we had it back then. Not that I complained or anything, I just had a great time playing sport, working, going out to the beach, movies, live music with friends. Living a good life but just didn't realise how great a time it was.
Ohh how I loved Carsons show. Watched it all the time growing up. Wonderful, fresh, real and extremelly entertaining. Can't find that anymore. Those were truly magical special times.
Could only watch in small doses. Jerry Lewis carried him! Of course he blossomed when they split. Sadness about his son was his downfall. That was truly horrible.
Watched another video on Dean Martin today, and my impression of him in that is borne out here--aside from being a great singer and a spot-on actor, he had a laid-back persona that brings out so much humor! Won't be another like him in my lifetime, I'm sure.
Dean Martin was not a drunk by any means. This was his act. He was always drinking apple juice and never drank when he was performing, in fact he was always the first one home to be with his family.
Nobody was as charismatic as Dean. Not just a "crooner," but one of the most underrated comedic talents ever, as was his show. I truly pity kids today and the crap they have choices of to watch now.
I loved how Johnny had his guests on and let them be the center of attention. Today its too much about the hosts being the center. Those were great late night shows !
Agreed Carson was the best IMO. Even Leno says that he was just a fill in guy for Carson that happen to last for 20+ years. Leno knows Carson was the last of the great late night hosts. Man I miss it.
I understand that I'm certainly biased when I say Johnny Carson was the standard of late night talk shows. Being born in 1955, he came into my orbit when I was maybe 10/11yrs old. Watching these UA-cam and nostalgic channels now, that show reruns of the shows, what really stands out with Carson, was his innate ability to 'lightly' poke fun at whomever was the president, which is the way it should be. But now? It's really kind of sad what passes as late night talk. I don't watch the shows of course, as my generation as long gone out of the limelight, but the articles I'll see online, that comment on the vitriol that these late night hosts now exhibit on a nightly basis. It's really kind of sad.
He was not "The King". He was "The Only". And there was no internet, etc. Stars HAD to go on his show for publicity. That's why it seems so cool. Most couldn't stand Johnny Carson. The women especially since they had to 'put out' on the side to get on the show. Known fact.
It will never be that way again and that is why it is so special to those of us who remember it like it was yesterday. These men were role models who shaped our lives in small, large and ways we are not even aware of. Despite all the troubles of the time, we could always relax and get a much needed reality check by watching Carson at the end of the day. We knew it wouldn't last forever and now 40 years later we wake up with the realization that "forever" is here. The younger generation today does not know what they have missed and you can't tell them. That is their loss and that is the tragedy of being reminded of what "we", the old Frankie/Annette generation have lost over the years. Thanks guys for making it special.
Roll models?? Hardly and not by a long shot! It is well known that Dean and Johnny were womanizers and hard drinkers, especially Dean. And Dean was already smoking pot while he and Jerry Lewis were still together. These guys may have been funny but absolutely were not role models. Sometime read Dean and Me by Jerry Lewis. You'll learn a lot.
MaryMac I'm not the one who needs to "learn a lot, toots"! It was well known that Dean's act of being a drinker and carouser was just that, an "act". Every public figure of every time in history has their own bumps and barnacles, the fact remains that they largely kept it to themselves and which was only made public after some tell all publication years and years later. People had the courtesy and ethical moorings not to trot it out for sensationalist purposes like they do today which serves no purpose other than the almighty dollar. I "read a book once"...my gawd, what a weak statement! Rock Hudson's homosexuality was an open secret in Hollywood but was generally unknown outside the trade (same with Paul Lynde and both Darin's from Bewitched). George Reeve's dalliance with a mob bosses wife wasnt known until 30 years after his death. Problem is, you've been sold a bill of goods that no one, regardless of argument, will ever change your mind or enlighten you. Like I said, I was there, I was lucky and fortunate enough to know some of these people personally and can only tell you not to believe everything you read unless you get the information from a variety of sources including the primary. Besides, they were MY role models, and although they obviously weren't yours, I find your disrespect of me and what "I think and believe" as cowardly and tasteless befitting the troll you probably are. Get a life and stop butchering things of which you have no idea of what your speaking about. Grow up!
Interesting how Dean played the drunk so well, of course the people around him played along. After his death many of his fellow performers open up to the truth he drank very little. Dean often used apple juice as it had the look of a strong drink. One of the give a ways, the same jokes such as when he looked around and said "how all these people get into your room" were part of his well rehearsed routines. Jerry seinfeld told a story about when he was just getting started in the business, and had to follow dean as a guess. Before going on the two talked a bit back stage and Dean was stone sober, Jerry was amazed how easily he sled into the tipsy guest while in the interview.
Dean did not rehearse anything. He'd memorize lines for a movie, but that was about it. Ten years playing slapstick comedy with Jerry Lewis gave him all the improv experience he needed, and he was always very good at it. Not as overbearing as Jerry Lewis, but often funnier.
My sorry funny my mom and I and were on a flight to Paris. Sh e said what would you happy if we went if went down ? Weird question but I said I would be with Robert Redford with Willie singing. She said John Wayne with Dean Martin singing.
MrSuperbombastik dude, no joke. I just feel that the tonight show should just be done by someone who’s more natural at talking to people and improvise.
Johnny carson was the best!!! I use to beg my mother and dad to let me stay up to watch the show and my father use to tell me ok but dont complain when you got to get up for school tomorrow, or. Ill let you have the belt
I think the biggest testament to this clip is the fact that in all of the comments about it, there are no thumbs down. Not a one. I've seen a child get a pony and someone gave it a thumbs down. Dean Martin was the coolest of the cool. Bob Hope's timing was awesome and Johnny, well, he was Johnny and he will never be repeated.
As a boy I recall occasionally being allowed to stay up late in order to see a celebrity on Carson. In 2019 I can't think of anyone I would stay up past 1030 to see
I loved Dean Martin. What a great guy! How blessed are we that we live in a time when we can still see and hear these wonderful entertainers. They will never be forgotten. I wish I could hear what they bleeped near the end!
At this point, Dean was 58-year-old n semi-retired. This episode is legendary because he has bob hope there. They work well with each other. Johnny, being around dean over 15yrs at this point, understood his humor n does great with dean as well. So, dean is in his comfort zone right here. He's just chilling but being candid while being funny. He is worth over 20 million here with a place in the hills n single. All he does at this point is play golf n host the roast 3-4x a year. Bob is the real BIG $$$! Here, he's worth around 200 million (over 1billion today). Oil profits with Bing Crosby fueled the EPIC rise in net worth. Bob Hope was the greatest entertainer of the 20th century; performing for 70 years! He is an American Institute. Bob Leslie townes hope was a founding pioneer of comedy. Johnny Carson is the greatest late night talk show host EVER!!! His format was genius.
Bob Hope, at some point, was the second largest property owner in the State of California, and reportedly worth somewhere around $800 million. Several sources have said he was never married to the woman who he represented as his "wife" Dean's reference to seeing Angie Dickinson backstage almost caused Johnny Carson to swallow his upper lip, because he was having an "affair" with her at the time.
Yes. Carson WAS the undisputed "ringmaster" of the Tonight Show "circus". But look at the "acts" he had to work with. It was a unique time with unique talent. That kind of talent is no longer around. I wonder if Carson would be able to replicate what he did back then given today's crop of celebrities?
Bob Hope was a no talent POS. A malignant mole on the face of American showbusiness of that time. The guy who would show up on opening of a gas station, as long as cameras are there
I love that Bob puts his hand on top of his drinking mug to protect it from any ashes coming from Deans ciggarette :D (One part of Deans act was to put his cigarette ashes a little bit everywhere and especially in peoples drinks lol )
icetech6 ... About 8 years before this air ... Bob Hope and Dean and George Gobble was on. To make a long story short Dean put his ashes in George drink. It a must see tonight show. Just google tonight show Bob Hope and Dean, George Gobble and you can find it on youtube.
No one could ever put on a show as funny as this now days. Bob and Dean play off each other perfectly. I always have loved Dean. That velvety voice, handsome good looks and a great sense of humor. I thought it was so cool that he had a wife and kids at home waiting on him. What a great dad. We never missed Dean's show. This was one of Johnny's best shows. Love you forever, Dean. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Very well put, Mario. It's sad to know all of those individuals have passed away. It's even worse to know that there are no replacements for them. Fun while it lasted.
All the 'Great Ones' from when we were kids are gone now. Even Tim Conway is gone. Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, Red Skelton, Milton Berle, Jack Lemmon, Jerry Lewis, Henry Fonda, Larry Hagman, Walter Matthau etc. etc. And if they're not gone they're REALLY old. The only actor I can think of from the 50's & 60's who's STILL on TV today is David McCallum. Norman Lloyd & Kirk Douglas are older and still around but no longer active. Bob Newhart is still here, too. God bless them all!
If only Johnny's couch could talk! Man, the people he had on that show! So great to have these videos and the multipack compilation that was put out several years ago so we can relive late night brilliance! And apropos of nothing, I love Dean's outfit -- beige sweater and pants with an off-white jacket! And sometimes they leave in the old commercials. Crazy!
He faked his boozing & he knew enough to include his face getting a lil red. Probably used a heat lamp for a bit.. He also golfed ALOT. So he may have been golfing the day before or.
@@sandythomas921 - sorry Sandy, but you don't know what you are talking about. Dean Martin use to call the police on his own wife to break up parties at his house so he could go to sleep. He golfed six days a week when he could. He was home for dinner with his family every night when he wasn't on the road in concert or doing movies. So don't call people drunk unless you actually know the people you are talking about and not just what you read on the internet or in People Magazine.

Dean Martin is checking into rehab, all future shows postponed until further notice. 10. With Dean Martin in rehab, the public must find something else to destroy through social media.
You hit the nail on the head with you comment. Political correctness has gone wild. Oh and the Children's Television Council would also file a lawsuit in case any erstwhile children might have happened to be up that late with parents thinking they are now scarred for life. Great comment Sobison.
I'd forgotten how much fun we had all those years ago. Smoking, foul language and drinking encouraged. Add these stars and you can't help but listen in and share in the fun. Thanks for posting this golden oldie. RIP, Gentlemen
It is a sad shame that all four of these men are now gone. It was however a pleasure to meet Ed McMahon in person when he came to my hometown to promote his latest and only book he made in honor of Johnny. I got a photo with him and my now ex-wife and my first kid.
I love the " How have you been, Joey." What many people may not remember is that Joey Bishop also had an ABC late-night talk show opposite Carson for several years. Knowing that makes Dean's opening line funnier.
thejimdoherty I thought he was referring to the fact that Joey Bishop often substituted for Johnny when Johnny had time off from the show. This was often joked about by other guests as well, and even by Joey himself. When Johnny had his 10th anniversary show, Joey came on and said; “This is not really your 10th, it’s your 6th and my 4th!!”
These guys are priceless it was worth stayjng up to watch Johnny Carson. They definitely dont have people this funny on late night now, there is no compatison
Fantastic stuff and thanks for sharing it. I must have been out that night. Like so many, once we were in our late teens and early twenties watching this show with our dads, it now means so much to see these, sometimes for the first time.
Yes exactly, you are so right. I was also thinking that the songs "My Way" should have been given to Dean Martin to sing, because he did everything his way, and he didn't take any guff off of anybody, and that includes Frank Sinatra, because Dean wouldn't take any of Sinatra's stuff, if you know what I mean.

What was said at 12:42 ? F__k him ? Dino RIP. Gotta love him
I watch this over and over, never get tired of it.
Now that was entertainment! Absolutely brilliant! Never to be repeated or copied ever!
The greatest ever. You’ll never see this kind of talent again.
Dean and Foster were the most sober drunks to ever grace our screens, big and small. RIP to both.
Mark Harrington ... Foster would always get Dean to lose it. I never seen Dean hold himself together when Foster was doing his act. He just loved Foster to pieces.
Even as a kid I knew Foster Brooks was acting, but it still killed.
Red Skelton?
Mark Harrington Otis from Andy Griffin Great !!!!!!!!
Foster was acting, Dean was drunk.
Bob Hope had the best line of the night: “I’m just waiting for a bus.”
Would love to know what was bleeped out.
My favorite was "Hey Doc! How's your severinson!"
That was great ! 🤣😂😅😁🤗
Witty man Hope was & a bit deaf. Wonder if it was cuz of all his USO tours? I had a charity golf tournament & Bob Hope sat at my table & I laughed all thru dinner. Witty. What a humanitarian!
@@hayesman76 Me, too!!!
If you were lucky enough to be around back then, you'll remember these shows. A+++
Dean said "That's fucking bullshit." I can't tell what Johnny said. Love these guys. When men were men.
He said Son of a bitch lol when i saw him say that i was like damn he didnt like that lol
It looks like he said more. I think he dropped an "F" bomb along with that "Son of a Bitch".
DonDraperism he said f-you dummy
you gotta come back more often you drunken son of a bitch ♡
Johnny said......
"You drunk S.O.B!!"
Boy, it does'nt get much better than this one! It's so nice to stroll down memory lane once in awhile!!
I love love LOVE Dean Martin. He can really crack himself up. Another National Treasure sadly gone.💔💕
Dean is buried in a simple crypt near Marilyn Monroe that says DEAN MARTIN (cant remember date of birth except it was in 1917): 1917 - December 25, 1995 "Everybody loves somebody sometime"
He was the best!
...yeah, he died alone and penniless. Pity noone missed him then.
@@jasoncowell5133 not quite. At the time of his death, his estate was valued at $30 million (in today's dollars).
My dad knew Dean from back in the mid-50s. Said he was a great guy. Extremely nice and like others have said, always sober...
This is why Johnny was and is the alltime master. Every minute is gold
Shannon McDowell 555
“You’re not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on.” - Dean Martin
Joe e Lewis was the originator of that holding on joke
He also said something to the effect of ..I feel sorry for people that don’t drink .. when they wake up that’s the best they will feel all day .😄
Been there and done that..lol
Dean also said somewhere along the way that …scotch and carrot juice was his favorite drink …he gets drunk but he can see well …
Hard to imagine these fellows are no longer with us. Thank you God for these shows on youtube. Thanks FredFlix.

Dean Martin, from what I've heard just used drinking as a "schtick" but never really drank all that much. Loved his show.
I used to wait, very excited, to see which “mystery guest” would pop out from behind the scenes on Dean’s show. Good times!
I miss this kind of entertainment. Johnny was one of a kind and so were the actors.
Well said.
- I feel your thoughts...
Well, that enslaving, stifling PC brought me--a Gen X--here and taught me all about these wonderful performers.
Well said.
Gen X ? seriously.... I watched Johnny Carson all the time growing up and I'm Gen X ... you have the wrong generation - its millennials and Gen Y
How I miss these times I'm so thankful that I grew up in the best time and didn't even know it
Same m8!

Same here. Younger generations don’t have anything that compares to this. They’re all watching the Kardashians and Jersey Shore repeats.
@@alan30189 so agree
I had no idea how good we had it back then. Not that I complained or anything, I just had a great time playing sport, working, going out to the beach, movies, live music with friends. Living a good life but just didn't realise how great a time it was.
Johnny was and still is the king of late night. No one comes close, and to see Dino and Mr. Hope on the same show...... how cool, classic.
Ohh how I loved Carsons show. Watched it all the time growing up. Wonderful, fresh, real and extremelly entertaining.
Can't find that anymore. Those were truly magical special times.
Dean was an all around talent, comedy, actor, singer, loved him!
you think thats comedy? wow sad. thats just an alcoholic being an alcoholic
@@ernesto2491 Get educated schmoe, it was an act. You probably believe reality shows are unscripted too.
Could only watch in small doses. Jerry Lewis carried him! Of course he blossomed when they split. Sadness about his son was his downfall. That was truly horrible.
You forgot alcoholic
rondmc44 Dean was a piss head
By far the most ENTERTAINING INTERVIEW i have ever watched, when you watch this group your watching the best..
Thanks for posting
Dean is good looking man
Watched another video on Dean Martin today, and my impression of him in that is borne out here--aside from being a great singer and a spot-on actor, he had a laid-back persona that brings out so much humor! Won't be another like him in my lifetime, I'm sure.
Dean Martin was not a drunk by any means. This was his act. He was always drinking apple juice and never drank when he was performing, in fact he was always the first one home to be with his family.
What a classic segment that can be treasured forever.
Infinitely more entertaining than anything on late night currently.
How I miss those days! Simply best of the best. Dean Martin = class.
Never seen a man more comfortable in his own skin than Deano.
I can't tell you how i envy Dean for that. Never met a man with more confidence yet on the same time being a nice polite man.
Love Dean!!!! Great interview!! Good old days!!
Johnny Carson was the last true king of late night.
Agreed Carson was the best IMO. Even Leno says that he was just a fill in guy for Carson that happen to last for 20+ years. Leno knows Carson was the last of the great late night hosts. Man I miss it.
only stupid to say so!!!!
RIGHT ❗❗❗
I understand that I'm certainly biased when I say Johnny Carson was the standard of late night talk shows.
Known fact.
Rest in peace - true legends of the entertainment industry
9:10 - lol - little did Johnny know that Dean Martin was dressed 10 years ahead of their time. By 1985, Dean's outfit was all the rave.
My how I miss these people

You're not alone....
Grow up!
@@peterpherfinion6671 Thank You,for the memories. Well stated.
Before going on the two talked a bit back stage and Dean was stone sober, Jerry was amazed how easily he sled into the tipsy guest while in the interview.
you are quite correct
Jerry Signified? Seinfeld?
Dean did not rehearse anything. He'd memorize lines for a movie, but that was about it. Ten years playing slapstick comedy with Jerry Lewis gave him all the improv experience he needed, and he was always very good at it. Not as overbearing as Jerry Lewis, but often funnier.
My sorry funny my mom and I and were on a flight to Paris. Sh e said what would you happy if we went if went down ? Weird question but I said I would be with Robert Redford with Willie singing. She said John Wayne with Dean Martin singing.

Carson set the standard that NO ONE can live up to.
MrSuperbombastik dude, no joke. I just feel that the tonight show should just be done by someone who’s more natural at talking to people and improvise.
Joan Rivers should have "inherited"his sjow, not Leno
Jimmy Kimmel comes close. And he's a good guy. Johnny was a prick.

Johnny carson was the best!!! I use to beg my mother and dad to let me stay up to watch the show and my father use to tell me ok but dont complain when you got to get up for school tomorrow, or. Ill let you have the belt
When I cook Italian/ Dean is singing in the backround and everything tastes better!

When I cook Italian, I listen to Pavarotti. If I listen to Dean, I always put to much wine in the sauce.
If you're old enough to have been around - and old enough to be up - to watch this, join me in a tall, frosty glass of prune juice.
Actually, this has gotten 13K thumbs up and 1K thumbs down.
As a boy I recall occasionally being allowed to stay up late in order to see a celebrity on Carson. In 2019 I can't think of anyone I would stay up past 1030 to see

Several sources have said he was never married to the woman who he represented as his "wife"
Dean's reference to seeing Angie Dickinson backstage almost caused Johnny Carson to swallow his upper lip, because he was having an "affair" with her at the time.

The guy who would show up on opening of a gas station, as long as cameras are there
The 70's , what a time!
I love that Bob puts his hand on top of his drinking mug to protect it from any ashes coming from Deans ciggarette :D
(One part of Deans act was to put his cigarette ashes a little bit everywhere and especially in peoples drinks lol )

From ireland love watching these old talk shows Carson was a class act!!
Dean was popular a little before my time, but such a fan, a great nice guy.

Crazy!

5. New Twitter update - "Dr. Phil will have guest Jane Doe on today's show. She is a grieving mother who lost her son to car accident by a drunk driver, feels Dean Martin's antics on The Tonight Show last night is something we should take action to."
6. BREAKING NEWS - Dean Martin to hold press conference tonight, issuing public apology!
7. Comments from Facebook, twitter and social media blowing up prior to press conference. John and Jane Doe have thoughtful post on Facebook - "As one nation, we should unite, and come together to stop drinking alcohol." - Another post from Jerry and Jan Doe - "Dean Martin should be ashamed of himself, he's the new face of evil."
8. UPDATE - Dean Martin in press conference issues his public apology, saying he's "hurt and saddened by the people he offended last night."

It is a sad shame that all four of these men are now gone. It was however a pleasure to meet Ed McMahon in person when he came to my hometown to promote his latest and only book he made in honor of Johnny. I got a photo with him and my now ex-wife and my first kid.
Doc still alive, amazing.
Johnny was so quick-witted. He got him right back on his jacket comment. “This is a nice outfit if you have a chicken takeout stand.“ 😂🤣😂🤣
Linda Shelley ...me too Linda. It is a well knew fact that Joey Bishop was a regular guest host for Johnny. Also Dean was a close friend.

Dean Martin was a class act! He was cool, he was witty,he was one of a kind, and he didn’t give a damn, he was his own man!
Yes exactly, you are so right.
I was also thinking that the songs "My Way" should have been given to Dean Martin to sing, because he did everything his way, and he didn't take any guff off of anybody, and that includes Frank Sinatra, because Dean wouldn't take any of Sinatra's
stuff, if you know what I mean.
