I love this. Honest stuff is always the best. Dick allowed his guests to open up and converse about what drove them to do what they do. No insults, clowning or upstaging. Buddy was a very smart and decent man who made the world a little better by just being himself. Bravo.

Cavett was a genius at dropping a topic suggestion then letting the guest take it from there. He seemed to be particularly enamored of comedians and some of his best shows were letting funny people be themselves instead of doing the act.
Cavett wrote for both Parr and Carson. he was on opposite Carson for a few years in the late 60's on ABC, when that network was mired in 3rd place and did not even have true national exposure. I read somewhere Carson said if Cavett had a network, " he would bury me+. Not sure if that was true, but Cavett did have a combination of Parr/Carson in him, very intellectual, but still very funny as well.
Guy Fawkes Totally agree. When I watch him and Carson do their interviews with comedians and actors you see, feel, and hear the admiration and respect they had for their guests. When it comes to the “other five guys” (I won’t mention their names because someone will be offended) all I see is either immaturity, boredom, or competition. This format will soon gone if it isn’t already.

There’s an ABC affiliate in Martin County north of us and in Dade County two counties south of us and if I didn’t have a cable hook up or if a person didn’t have a dish or internet there’s still no broadcast access to ABC television here because there’s no ABC affiliate in Palm Beach County one of the most developed counties in the country. I find that odd.
Love Buddy always for being so funny & he’s so smart & honest. 1st thing he mentions he can’t or won’t discipline himself to be healthy. Amazing how many extremely intelligent ppl are in the same boat. 🙄
The Canadian film, " Babe, " aka " Hey Babe " and " Rise and shine " was made in 1979 with Hackett and a 12 year old Yasmine Bleeth in her first movie role.

Buddy Hackett was my dads favorite comic. I know back then Buddy was rude and racist.. look he played a native american in a movie. that was those days. I was adopted I am Native American, my dad was German. His family was German. He loved Buddy. I remember being a kid in 1980 and his aunts spoke only German. My dad was a great man. he looked passed his hertiage to love Buddy Hackett. Yes his jokes can be now sexist. as a country.. I hope we can except all races as my father did for this native american and culture and I love buddy hackett jokes.
He had a very dirty blue act in Vegas and some others. He is not any hero in my club. Im watching this because i saw him some old movies that i recall- mad mad mad world.
Buddy was one of the greatest! He was also my "Birthday Buddy" on August 31st.
I still drink a toast to him and the memories on that day.
Buddy Hackett was a real mensch. We don't see much of that today.

Cavett liked to match wits, but he often got in the way, and sometimes was overmatched.
He is funnier with Johnny Carson, but that poem stops you, and gives pause to the greater humanity behind a great man.
