The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The Angels, the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes were part of trend to present a tougher image for girl groups, in order, apparently, to set them apart from the sweeter sound of pop stars like the McGuires or the Chordettes. I will admit that the latter's "Sandman" and "Lollipop" seem to have established themselves a place in Rock history. The predecessors to the Motown girl groups were 1) The Bobbettes whose "Mr Lee" reached the top ten in 1957 and 2) The Chantals featuring the great Arlene Smith. Their "Maybe" sold a million records in 1958. Still a wonderful recording to listen to!

My Uncles made it to Dick Clark's show in the late 1950s and so I learned a lot of rock n' roll lore from them, eyewitnesses to that history and they said the same thing as you have here! Thanks for your post!

This is a rare appearance by a girl group on television in the early '60's. Before the Supremes, and shows like Hullabaloo and Shindig which would feature the sound more regularly, the '60's girl group sound was rarely featured on prime-time TV shows (not including the female groups like the McGuire Sisters who appealed more to the older viewers). Consequently, this was the only appearance of the Angels on the Sullivan show. It has been said that some viewers complained that this performance was too "raunchy" and "wild" although it's hard to believe. "My Boyfriend's Back" was a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963.
The members of the Angels at this time were Peggy Santiglia (lead singer) and Phyllis and Barbara Allbut.

It's hard to believe that viewers thought this was considered "wild" and "raunchy". I wonder if those viewers are still alive. If they've heard some of the performances today, they'd know what "wild" and "raunchy " truly is. These Angels have got nothing on some of today's performers. 😄

This song was written by Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein and Richard Gottehrer. Bob Feldman graduated from Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, NY the same year as Neil Sedaka. Around the same time , The Tokens formed in Lincoln High School with Jay Siegel. One of The Tokens from Lincoln High, Hank Medress, went on to introduce the young ladies from Dawn to Tony Orlando and produced most of their huge hits. Sportscaster Marv Albert was also attending Lincoln High School during this period and the year after Feldman and Sedaka graduated from Lincoln, Neil Diamond graduated from the school!

60s(and 50s) girl groups..and soul groups in general ..possibly my favourite 'genre' & era of music by a million...the chantels, the dixie cups, the exciters, the supremes, the ronettes, the toys, the platters, little anthony & the imperials, ruby and the romantics, the shirelles, the crystals, the marvelettes, the miracles, the blossoms...you name it..the voices, harmonies, image and everything about them was OUT OF THIS WORLD...no music can compare to it these days.
