Jesus...make the movie already! What a life. Who else can we point to that has had such an impact on a sport/industry? Not many. I don't skate, at all, but I find Rodney fascinating and his impact on the skating world is amazing. This guy deserves his recognition.
air condition dog house
They only make movies about the people who were huge successes and then spiraled out with drugs etc sadly
@@grandlotto548 42? Ghandi? Malcom X? Walk The Line? Lincoln? Notorious? Ali? Ray? Should I keep going? Didn't realize all of those movies are about people who became drug addicts later in life.
I can’t think of anyone out there that could play Rodney. He is such an individual and his own man that anyone trying to play him would just feel weird.
I wanted to be him man😂😂 he is such a legend
I could listen to Mullen talk about skateboarding all day
me too
Have you seen him on the physics girl channel talking the physics of the kickflip?
100%
Amen
hard to follow
"...this could have ramifications"
One of the biggest understatements of all time, right there. What a guy.
🤣
I love how famous skaters keep each other's legacies alive. Most of them preach every big skater at least once in an interview, rarely any trash talking. Such an underrated community
Its because its more of an artform than a competition, though competitions do happen.
@@blitheringrando1410It's a way of life too.
Thats a great point I've never noticed that before
Learned the hard way! except a half pipe sesh where I just watched the shit fly right at my face lmfao@SpatulaCitySpatulaCity
This man is the literal FATHER of modern skateboarding. We are genuinely blessed to be alive at the same time as him. His wisdom is invaluable and insurmountable.
Yea, he's an amazing person. I just watch him in awe.
You know whats CRAZY!!?!? This generation, nowadays, HAS NO CLUE WHO RODNEY IS
I'm 51 now and still skate 2 times a week. Because of Rodney I have been kicking flipping for about 30 years. My knees and ankles have been screaming at me ever since. ...lol
hes like nikola tesla. and tony is like edison.
Mullen and gonz are the godfather's of modern day skateboarding
Rodney's level of humility is always a joy to witness.
For real.HE is the truth
he had a perfect opportunity to say "it was the best moment, i was ecstatic, i felt like the greatest man" but instead he chose to say "once i did the trick i knew im gonna try to make it better and when i go back out it will make me feel that much more CONNECTED WITH MY PEERS"
I wrote Rodney a letter when I was a middle schooler - asking how the kickflip was invented. He wrote me back, saying it was a mess-up that he worked on until it was a trick. He said that's how most of his tricks came to be-a goof that made him stop and wonder if there was something to it. It's always great to hear him talk shop.
Great talk. Tony-stop dying your eyebrows. It's weirder than just letting them go gray. 😅
"it was a mess-up that he worked on until it was a trick" . . . there is a broader object lesson there - Cool post!
That is such a cool way to teach a kid to keep trying no matter what, without directly saying it.
great story about rodney and your letter
With all the nonsense in UA-cam comments, I honestly believe this is real and the words that @drew5027 quoted are so wise and concise… Mullins a genius, I wish more like him were out there
@@joemilner7710who cares about in what you believe ?
Rodney knows and 100% appreciates the respect his impact on skateboarding has had on so many people. You can hear it when he talks. He had no idea how big skateboarding would become and how significant his contribution would be. Yet he remains humble and grateful. HE IS The Godfather of Modern Skateboarding.
Rodney Mullen is the *Nikola Tesla* of skateboarding, a straight up *Prodigal Genius.*
How is he prodigal? If anything he is the opposite of prodigal
Im a 35 year old man and just hearing Rodney speak passionately about skating makes me tear up, everytime.
What does being a 35 year old man have to do with anything lol
If you're 35 then you're from the softest and most coddled generation in history so the thought of you crying isn't actually a stretch, millennials cry if their latte order is wrong.
Jesus get your shit together dude. Another man talking about his hobbies shouldn't make you cry lol. The fuck is wrong with you guys
@@dustyoldhat Im 58 and it makes me cry too. the world needs more sensitive kind hearted people.. We have lived too long under the rule of Men who are unwilling to show their sensitivity, this is why men die earlier than women. So why the fuck are you giving this kid a hard time,? why dont you worry about yourself and your unhealthy bottled up emotions? go away, please
That’s a beautiful story. Skateboarding wouldn’t be where it is today if this kid didn’t practice in his garage and driveway. Gotta love stuff like this
Rodney will always be the best to ever step on a skateboard
If he didn’t turn out to be the most creative skater of all time by far, then he would’ve been the best at something else.
@@Samson_Ight that’s a fair point.
I could imagine him sucking dicks behind dumpsters for top dollar
@@Samson_Ight I think the fact he even made it as a baseball player disproves this point a little bit.
If jordan had spent as much time focusing on baseball as he did basketball maybe he would have been the best, if basketball didnt exist i mean.
@@Samson_IghtThat’s not what he’s saying.
Michael Jordan wasn’t the best baseball player because he allocated much of his time to basketball.
OP is saying if Rodney had allocated his time elsewhere instead of skateboarding , he would be just as successful in that domain.
I'm actually gay
Rodney has such a sensitive artistic soul. Take note. Sensitivity to life breeds great things.
Tony is chasing so hard. He is like dude how did it feel lol
Lol yeah, but it's because Rodney's mind operates at another level. He is telling it, but not how you'd expect.
this interview is living history...
Lol Rodney is such a deep and spiritual dude that tony kept tryna get straight answers out of him and he couldn’t figure that out😂
hes a god damned weirdo
A true magician doesn’t reveal their secrets
The implications of Rodney creating the kickflip are insane. Skateboarding has been a massive impact on popular culture, and without that kickflip, who knows what the world would look like now. Rodney legitimately changed the world.
It goes way deeper than that. Rodney created the ollie. It's impossible to state how massive his influence is.
@@Gettlesflatground ollie*, to be specific
still, his impact really can’t be understated
His board was mocking him. 🤯
Didn’t he also help design the modern skateboard
Allen Gelfand invented the ollie, I remember it well.
😂 Brilliant. They asked if after the first kickflip did the birds sing and the clouds part? And his answer was, "it was like my board was mocking me" 👏👏👏
This is the most humble guy I've EVER listened to in my life! Mullen has legit always been my favorite skater and inspiration for trying to learn as a kid.
100% what I was thinking. Such a humble dude. I remember another video where Tony says "you're the best in the world" to Rodney and Rodney's just star struck to be told that by a guy like Tony Hawk. I remember thinking a jedi like him could be big headed about it but instead did the polar opposite. Amazing guy, for sure 👏
Amazing, millions of kids have experienced the moment of landing a magic flip and it all started in a barn solo skating.
Wow. Tony's a good interviewer! He didn't let up on that question and drew that answer out of him. Incredible.
Damn, much respect to Mullen's dad for literally laying down cement in a barn so his son can mess around on a skateboard.
Dead bodies to hide probably
@@janeblogs324 Badass
Mullen is a legend not just for his ability or creativity, he's also a legend because of his willingness to share what he learned with those around him and elevate everyone and skateboarding as a whole.
The greatest skateboarder of all time. He is not of this world
Just the way Rodney takes you on so many weird levels in normal conversations is mind blowing. What a human god made with this man.
i agreed with you up until you brought up "god".. hate to break it to you but....
@@rektorik84 hate to break it to you who has time to comment about someone saying god in a UA-cam comment lol
I actually think that's the best description of Rodney Mullen I've ever heard. What a human god made with this man.
@@rektorik84then keep your mouth shut? You're like a little child who has to insert themselves
He’s partly made by strong faith in God, mathematics, and personal discipline.
There’s crazy people you want to stop talking to the minute they start a tangent and then there’s “crazy” people like Mullen who truly shape the world around them and can reflect on that on a deep, sometimes meandering, but always meaningful way. Cheers 🥂
I think calling Rodney crazy is similar to calling unknown technology magic. This mans perspective just operates on a different level.
@@Zenfyr its like calling the kick flip a magic flip ;)
Rodney’s not afraid to talk about deep and meaningful revelations and THAT separates him from ordinary folk.
Rodney Mullen is the Skate World's Monastic Father. His explanation of unlocking his talent is like listening to a dessert father speak. What a great Soul.
I have played drums for a long time, and most of it is at home alone with no one listening. To an observer it would be boringly repetitive and perhaps frustrating to hear. But all those moment lead to moments of magic in my playing that I never knew was possible. Work work work work and then something just clicks and i realize I just took a giant leap forward. That's the closest comparison I can think of regarding that question. Mullen is so much cooler than me and my drumming though, lol.
What an authentic individual. Definitely the expected answer. Rodney has a beautiful way of describing his feelings and accomplishments.
Rodney is just simply the best. As a kid watching him do the things he did was otherworldly to me. But him still so humble is awe-inspiring
Even with all that freestyling never really became popular even to this day. No one does it.
Rodney is truly a holy man.
Thank god Tony was there to help guide this conversation in the right direction, very very happy to be alive during the time this amazing talent was invented
If Rodney didn’t exist street skateboarding wouldn’t exist. Idk how many times I watched round2 as a 13 year old in 2000 and wanting to do just one of his tricks. Rodney is just as famous as Tony.
"It's mocking me" - that is exactly the kind of relationship i imagine Rodney having with Skateboarding. He is like a child chasing a magical creature. And everytime he things he caught it or mastered it or whatever, it kinda laughes at him. "not yet Rodney, there is so much more to see. Look at this. Follow me." Come to think of it - it's like the Search for Animal Chin.
He is just the Goat. I am 45, i grew up with McGill, Mountain, Caballero, The Birdman etc. I have so much nostalgia watching him Definately one of my Heroes.
The positivity between these three is refreshing.
Especially rodney. Dude is so humble but undoubtedly the most influential and instrumental person involved in the freestyle and street skating scene.
RODNEY IS THE GREATEST SKATER TO TOUCH A BOARD HANDS DOWN.
HANDS UP AND IN THE MIDDLE TOO!
This made me cry ..IMO the 2 greatest skaters of all time ..
Rodney Mullen can invent 100 tricks but can't answer a question in 5 minutes lol
That's why he invented kickflips and you didn't
What I love is you can clearly tell that Rodney (Who I grew up idolizing and still think is so amazing) is on the spectrum. And now as an adult who has a son who is on the spectrum as well, it brings me so much joy to watch videos like these and see how Rodney has changed the world for the better and see his humility. It brings me great peace to know my son can go out there and do the same and change the world as Rodney did being on the spectrum! So much love for this guy and my son!❤
“So mullen, you invented the kickflip?” Mullen: “Yeah… lets have a good little chat about paved roads”
I can clearly remember the first ROLLING kick flip I did, over 30 years ago. I know exactly where and still can’t explain how cool it felt doing one rolling and keeping speed.
This dudes old skate vids were absolutely insane. I still remember watching them in the mid-late 90’s. Legend.
I figured it out... Rodney's wisdom combined with his out of this universe skating. He IS Animal Chin!! The search is over.
what a time to be alive. legends
We need part 2 with Mullen
Hello again....
The thumbnail is him doing a Switch Triple Varial Rail Flip.
Never skated in my life but even I know what a loss it will be when this man passes, an absolute genius and its a privilege to live while he is still alive
We definitely need a movie about this guy. The man that brought us ollie and 80% of skateboard tricks he needs a movie. For the ollie alone he is already the man.
He did not come up with the ollie, do your homework bruh haha
I can agree with you about the movie part though
@@ojackseizemg4020 I watched a video last week about him with the pros from back his time, and they were saying he is the guy that brought us the ollie, he was the first one to do it and on a flat board too.
You go do your homework bro, you're making yourself look stupid.
@@ojackseizemg4020 Mullen was the first to do the flat ground ollie. So Mullen is credited to the flat ground ollie, and Gelfand is credited with Ollies in a bowl, or wall. Gelfand did his ollie, and then Mullen copied it and did it in a different setting.
@@kevinwagner1451 Guess I was the one who needed his homework done, my B
i cant imagine creating tricks without youtube tutorials, people helping you, giving you tips on foot placement and stuff. just a guy and a board. truly magical. i imagine he has a really good understanding of physics combined with perfect hand eye coordination. the guy is truly a genius and gave the world a gift
Rodney Mullins description of what he felt when doing the first kickflip was so heartwarming and sincere. It wasn’t like something he found he could do to hold it over people and show off, but something he could present to his peers and feel more connected with them, and that’s just what skating is all about. So much fun and competitive in such a healthy way, even at the highest level BATB, the guys aren’t like cut throat competitive like mainstream sports. There’s a respect for your peers in skating that I don’t think is matched in mainstream sports.
What I always love is seeing the love and respect Tony and Rodney have for each other. Arguably the two most influential skateboarders of all time, and when they talk about each other, it's nothing but praise.
Who would play Rodney in a movie of his journey in skateboarding?! What a difficult role to fill. I bet he put in more hours than we could imagine. Love the humble way hey describes his passion for skateboarding. 🙏🏼🤙🏼
Terry Crews is the only person I could think of
seriously though, I think joaquin phoenix would give it a decent crack
Christian Bale could pull off older Rodney, but idk who would do a young Rodney
I've said before but I'm gonna keep saying it,Rodney Mullen is the Richard Feynman of skating
Ok
I'm sorry n I know Google is free but who tf is Richard Feynman ??
Always found it such a treat listening to Rodney just talk.. he had his way of conveying his messages! Dude is a legit living legend walking amongst us.
Love how Rodney almost looses track of the question as he's answering
The guy is the best skater of all time. Hands down.
*i was too stupid to figure that out* : No Mr. Mullen you were a genius!
Skateboard history. The Ollie magic flip. 💯
Wow! Much deserved recognition to this extremely humble man. Ollie flip was one of the tricks I most enjoyed when I used to skate. I never new it was Rodney behind it. Thank you for so much joy!
Rodney is so humble and down to earth.
Imagine being so pivotal to a sport than EVERYONE in the world skates your style. Its not just one move, its not just an olly he invented, but every trick pretty much has its roots in one of rodneys original moves. Its like if everyone did swimming comp's doggy style and one invents freestyle, butterfly, high diving, backstroke, breast stroke. Its nuts.
Such a chill and brilliant dude. Modest AF too.
amazing he wanted to be connected with his peers all while he actually lead them. what a humble man
Thank you for not interrupting his words!! Many many other interviewers would certainty have done so .
I love how honest and humble Rodney and Tony are. A lot of people get full of themself at that level of talent and popularity. Even talking about inventing tricks in such a humble way shouldnt be taken for granted... Many many inventions in this universe came to this world as an accident, take Penicillin as an example, but not everyone admits it in such a straight humble way,
It really takes a mad man to change the world
The dexterity and absolute foot control Mullen posses is unreal from an early age always on a different level
Rodney is the best guest for absolutely any podcast.
"you were doing it alone in a BARN" tony killed me with that one lol.
Rodney Mullen is a beautiful person.
Rodney the messiah, enlightening others with his vast skate knowledge.
"It's mocking me."
I feel you, man. Could listen to this for hours.
I could listen to Rodney speak about skateboarding for hours on end. The passion in his voice is out of this world. Thank you for inventing most of what I’ve held dearest for the last 26 years of my life .
I am so happy of all people to have its mark on skateboarding, it's rodney who is the goat. What an interesting energy this man has. So humble and thoughtful.
I randomly stumbled across this video going down the UA-cam rabbit hole. Hearing this guy speak and the way Tony and the other dude look at him, you can tell he's on GOAT status.
Oingo Boingo reference was amazing, consider what Elfman has done!!
Rodney is an artist. That’s how he approaches skating. He’s a very special human being that is absolutely connected
i fucking LOVE listening him talk
Rodney is aweesome! I could listen to him all day! Thanks for having him on Tony!
Epic stuff, man. I looked up to both of you as a young skater in the 80s.
I remember my first kick flip. After trying so hard for weeks. Best feeling in the world.
A legend this humbled does not happen very often!!!
What an ending!!!!!! Much love
Can we all just finally agree that Rodney Mullen is the skate version of Steve Erwin and should be recognized and treasured as such.
Rodney is a beautiful man, so humble and intelligent. The way he words things is just so easy to understand even if it's deeper than words. The man has soul.
I could listen to Rodney talk forever. What a deep cat.
Support your children in everything they do. It’s so amazing how Rodney had the time and protection to develop something we all love. Without that nurturing environment these things may have never been. Honestly this is the first time I’ve ever heard him speak and you can tell he’s a profoundly connected individual.
Rodney is so humble it makes me cry, for me The Legend from day one.
Humility in everything he does. The man, no myth and a gah damn legend.
He doesn't have the grandiose mentality to even ponder the questions asked to him. He's overwhelmed, blanketed by humility. He's genius.
DUDE
I thought this was just hawk and wolf talking and Tony was going to talk about how Rodney created kickflips but then the man himself is right there sitting by the table, so cool to see him!
Wow...he is so humble! I use to do vert rollerblade because i couldnt pop a ollie. He always were my favorite.
Tony hawks documentary is on max. It's awesome, I've watched 3 times already. Till the wheels fall off
That was beautiful, I almost cried
The two founding fathers of vert and street skateboarding in one conversation is legendary
this is pure gold
Such a legend! This man was who all my friends and I wanted to be as kids.
Rodney is definitely fascinating. His character and story would definitely make an amazing movie. He seems delicate and poetic like a dreamer…interesting guy
Rodney is such a genuinely beautifully amazing awesome person and his love for skateboarding is astronomical 💯🤙
He was that guy we all scratched our heads about as kids. We worshipped all the vert riders, but Mullen was like watching someone from the future doing stuff we couldn't comprehend.
