"The lines on the grip tape are like the frets of a guitar...." That made SO much sense to my brain. Even though, I don't play guitar. It just clicked so well with that explanation.
I don’t even skate but I watch anything with Andy just to listen to a genius describe his thoughts/creative process/development in a way that his genius is so accessible
Andy got that Mullen brain. It sounds insane in explanation, at times, but it seems like it is going to be way easier with the work. I can't wait to see what his other map consept looks like.
What’s with all the hate comments on Andy here? He’s genuinely trying to help people in skateboarding. If you think he’s doing this to make money you don’t pay attention. Andy has a heart of gold and a love for skating and getting people into skating. All these gate keepers can fuck off, you’re the problem with skateboarding.
On his Halk vs Wolf episode he says something along the lines of "The lines were always there, now everyone else can see them!", how can anyone hate this dude lol
they are talking about his olympic run, then immediately he is setting up the future of skateboarding. I've watched maybe 50 hours of andy anderson and this dude is doing EVERYTHING for skating. i can't stress that enough. and on top of that he's always kind and genuine. he doesn't project his pain. he doesn't have ego despite being the best skateboarder I've ever seen
the way Andy understands skateboard mechanics is absolutely incredible , he literally brings the science out of it , and how he can analyze and observe other skaters style and figure them out is outstanding
Dude these interviews with Andy explaining his theory crafting are going to go down in skate history. This is some of the most informative discussion I've ever heard about the subject of skateboarding.
It's just gimmicky wank mate, anyone whose not a beginner or a has-been can see straight through Andy's BS. There's no "hack" or "trick" to skating, there's no set foot positionings, his grip only works on his boards which again are a gimmick. There's a reason you don't see anyone skilled riding his shit
Andy has already changed skateboarding in a massively positive way.. but I think by the time he's where Rodney is today, just like Rodney, we'd be looking at his body of work and thinking how much skateboarding might have sucked without his input. Many do great things, few explain the framework in simple terms that allows that to happen.
Yes! First thing I thought of when I saw Andy’s style, it reminded me of Mullin. I’m old though... In terms of explaining tricks coherently though, Mitch Brusco (SkateIQ) is king.
ANDY YOU CAN DO GRIND MAPPING AND FLIP MAPPING ON ONE GRIP TAPE!!! print the flip lines in red and the grind lines in blue. Then use colored lenses to only focus on the map you want!! You be able to make some cool skater shades with interchangeable lenses and different color way grips for colorblind skaters!
@@Mike_Oxlong07 yes but the lenses used to block out certain colors and lines on the grip tape combats his note of the board looking like chaos when they asked if you could do flip and grind lines on one tape
This has been a thing a long long time. Myself as well as many others have done and still do this. Drawl a X through your front and back bolts is the simple version of this grip. Everything in skateboarding is math and physics. That will always be true. Andy is a great visionary and teacher. Unlike so many people in the past he doesn't gate keep information. Pros would gate keep information so they had the upper hand with new and innovative tricks and secrets in skateboarding. Andy on the other hand loves to share information and the specifics and technical side of skateboarding. mad props to him.
When I was learning tricks back in the day I drew lines on my griptape in various places to know foot placement for my ollies kickflips and heelflips. Really helped me learn
Andy is much like Rodney Mullen. He is a genius skater, but also a genius in the broad sense. And he's so lovely as a person. You hear it talk for hours and he never sounds off or bad towards people.
If I was a kid watching him explain this I'd think I can get his board, tape and wheels and be a skater over night. I hope this kid sells millions of these. I don't know anything about skating but he makes it interesting .I love his style of skating and retro feel he brings. Also love the helmet campaign.
when Chris was young in the 90’s there were baseballs that had different color fingerprints on it to teach kids how to throw different pitches. I don’t know if they still make them but Andy’s grip tape reminded me instantly of learning how to throw sliders at age 9.
I like this analogy to music theory and I feel like people often get music theory wrong in the very way that Andy is trying to lay this out in opposition to. People are often in one of 2 camps when it comes to music theory. Either it's the "rules" and therefore the correct way or it's a constraint that only serves to limit creativity. Both incorrect. Music theory is just a way to describe things. Being able to describe things helps us learn and teach. Knowing the theory is completely different from following it. People need to stop looking at it as following theory and start looking at it as using theory to describe what you did.
a local company called Alchemy grip was doing something similar a few years back. they never really took off, but didnt have someone like Andy behind the concept.
Love the way you think Andy! As for a tape that includes grind references and whatever else maybe what could be helpful is to run it past some other types of creative minds to see if they can interpret and simplify your design even further. Please keep in mind this comes from a guy who is a designer not a skater. Really just appreciated your enthusiasm and thought process. Thanks for sharing.
8:23 Dude, this is totally doable now. The precision heat pressing and composite material work being done these days is nuts. And I could see someone like him having the leverage to land a backer to fund a board company specifically to make this happen. He should try and make it happen, I bet he'd succeed.
bro the theroy map is soo genius!!!!! its really the whole theroy of skate boarding. its so perfect. this is how i used to picture where to put my feet to do all the things to flip and trick and heels and nollies its such a dope sport

Andy reminds me of just a young Rodney Mullen so intellectually smart when it comes to skateboarding and it’s hard to explain the vision to others. This grip is awesome.
Andy is like the starchild of skateboarding. Hes like a modern Rodney mullen and he's starting to get the recognition of Tony hawk and it makes me so excited for the future of the sport. We're in good hands w Andy.

Andy is doing engineering without knowing engineering. This dude is so insanely smart. The board industry would be wise to listen to and learn from Andy.
hey guys could you let andy know that there would be ways to give the deck concave in the spot he was mentioning even with wood as material. you can steam wood in that state you can bend it or press it in shape which it keeps permanently. if you then cook it in wax it becomes waterproof to the core and more durable. but you would have to use a glue that doesnt stiffen the board if you get what im saying since the deck would already be almost finished at that point so the waxcooking would be one of the last productionsteps. the glue has to hold the sheets together while still becoming bendable under heat. could look amazing too ^^ i just saw that you can just use a heatgun to in theory make corrections or changes afterwards. but as pointed out the glue needs to be pretty resistent and safe since you reheat it. might cause toxic fumes otherwise.
I`ve seen some longboard companies like Nelson put concave on foot pockets before, which is similar to extending the concave to the nose on a regular board. I wonder if it`s a tech issue or if this case is different somehow...

The more interviews I see of Andy, the more I think he is on the spectrum. My mind is blown to how he sees his profession. He is like a BJJ coral belt. He knows the skateboards grooves, angles, surfaces and their functions.
Sick! I guess it's a little like how you can do the same effort swing with a different loft golf club and get a different distance and height result. But you have made one variable constant,
the Jeremy Wray kickflip, back then boards were 7.75 on average and usually less concave. I think you could get away with the different foot placements a bit more.
Is it really impossible to have concave in the pocket due to being made of wood? What about boats and wooden sculptures and all sorts of bent or carved wood? I dont see how it would be impossible, its just that no one is doing it in the skateboard scene, ive seen it done on some longboards because they need it.

Any suggestions from anyone that have ridden an Andy board?
It would be cool if his grip had directional grip tape, where its more abrasive in a certain direction.. So On the concave and "channels" on the nose can be more abrasive then the middle of the board.
Are these guys not understanding what's going on here? They keep saying stuff like does it come with a manual? This is a map for kids to figure out what's going on with their feet on the board easier. He said it's like a fret board! Kids will put stuff on the Internet like they did with tabs for guitars and they'll help each other figure it out..
@Kelly Hart that Japanese kid with the backwards hat in the P-Rod/Primitive Japan trip videos does kickflips like J Wray, with his front foot in heelflip position. He skates the eS Sophistos.
Andy please just throw a sheet of your grip included with the new board! I wanna try the new shape out Hella bad. I've been using a twin tip for so long . Idk I'd get a deck and the nose would be Hella big and idk just felt like my pop was so much better that I'd always skate the nose but then I had that small side on my nose and I didn't like having to do a Lil Nollie shuv or something to get my big side ready for nollie so I was like I just want both ends exactly the same so no matter which way I land it feels like it's in the right position for a good snap .
In fairness to Andy, visualising and putting this on paper (or even griptape) is as impressive as the person that mapped out a guitar or ukulele, snot easy
Anyone remember a deck from baker I believe that was called wave construction or something it had a slight ripple to the whole deck . I think it was made for like boards lines and anything sliding in the deck . The wave made it to were less of the deck made contact with the rail or ledge cuasing less friction. At least that's what I came up with. I can't find any videos or any actual boards for sale . I seen it shit had to be 13 years ago . I always wanted 1 . I've only even seen 1 deck at the skate park.
