What makes this guy and Tony Hawk the legends that they are is the fact that they are so humble and find it embarrassing when people talk them up, he even looks embarrassed here when he mentions he invented the trick they are talking about never mind the other 100 he is credited for. You want your kids to have role models like these guys to look up to, no matter how good you are at something you never let yourself get an ego over it.
Hit the nail on that one. Humility is such a rare trait and it's so evident how truly humble Rodney is. He doesn't "act" humble. He is genuinely a humble human being. An egotistical human in his shoes would have surely mentioned earlier on "Oh, invented the ollie, kickflip, impossible and many others" Only thing he mentions about inventing a trick is at 6:40 and he doesn't even say he invented it he says "I'm credited for creating the trick or whatever", such a humble way to say it and then he quickly moves on to continue his point. Rodney Mullen has been my favorite skater and a general role model since 2005.
Calm Z . But why do you have such a problem with those two posters? It seems that a simple explanation of ego and such would have sufficed without having to negatively talk about the posters.
Rodney Mullen is such a humble man, he hardly told you he invented the impossible. But what he didn't mention was he invented the flat ground ollie, kick flip, heelflip and 20+ other tricks. He should have been the one with the skateboarding games... He pioneered skateboarding into what it is today.

I could literally watch hours of this kind of footage, Rodney is such a genuinely lovely bloke, humble as they come yet easily, to me, the greatest skateboarder to ever walk the earth. And to Physics Girl for the awesome hosting!
Rodney is soooooo humble!! the ollie impossible is not the only trick he’s credited creating. This dude literally created modern street skating by inventing the ollie, the kick flip, the 360 (tre) flip and all of the dark slide tricks. He is hands-down, the most amazing skateboarder I’ve ever watched, and I’ve watched a lot of skateboarders…being someone who skated over 10 years themselves. Being somebody that loves physics and skateboarding, I’m literally the person she mentions in the beginning of the video that would be part of the small audience to truly appreciate the subject. However, this was such an awesome video, and I’m sure many others think the same.
it's more than just "creating some tricks." Mullen is a physical genius and a kind of artist. For more than a decade, every few months Mullen would do new tricks that thousands of pro and passionate skaters around the world simply couldn't imagine was possible for a human body and a skateboard to do. In the same way that great composers have come up with new music that we couldn't previously imagine was possible, and great painters have created ways of seeing the world we couldn't previously imagine, Mullen over and over and over again pushed the boundaries of what we imagined was even possible. Since each "discovery" thousands of other skaters have mastered most of those tricks, so it's not that Mullen's body is somehow freakish. Rather, it's the combination of his famous hard work (spending hours alone each day skating on a simple parking lot exploring and mastering) along with a kind of genius to discover what couldn't previously be imagined.
Thomas Donalek thank You I love Rodney Myself he's Amazing and a great Skater he inspired me to skate and could possibly be my distant cousin cause I do have his last name and He does have alittle Irish in him like I do on my father's side.
His father was a Doctor and he was well on his way into going to University, he said in an interview if he hadn't started skateboarding he'd have probably ended up in a career doing nuclear physics, thank god he didn't because skateboarding owes him a lot
me too, i discovered him by Tony hawk Pro Skater This guy is awesome, a hard worker, (apparently he skated 9 hours per day in the heat of the 90's and his career. He invented many tricks, still modest, and i think he is one of the rare skater to preserve old school tricks (flat tricks like casper, darkslide, manuals...) And yeah his conference at ted talk was interesting
Yep I learned that a simple nollie triple kickflip melon grab can be performed off of a trashcan onto a powerline and then I can sack-tap grind that powerline up as long as I keep jumping and then do a Christ Air off of it into a bowl, all while wearing pajama pants.
Not true, but he has contributed a lot. Rodney hasn't invented a single air, grab, etc, when it comes to street skating he invented several flip tricks, even then Gonz was the one to adapt them to street
Exactly! For one one thing he practically invented nearly every trick done today or some variation of it and he has the intelligence and vocabulary to coherently explain it all.
being a skateboarder and rodney muller admirer for almost half of my life and currently doing my physics degree at university i wished this video never ended.. just too awesome
Rodney? Wow, he was an active legend back when I rode, roughly 1987. A perfect example of an acrobat applying his skills (and imagination) to his favored sport. Glad this legend is still active in the same sport, I continue to be in awe.
I hope you know that filming an interview with Rodney is kinda like a trophy, not many people have them. And skaters are always dying to see new footage of him. But anyway, it's kinda a priceless tape lol. And great job on everything, love your channel.
You grappled with a passionate hobby that many youths enjoy every day and merged the world of Physics, in order to breathe new appreciation for the sport. I loved it!
I love this. As a kid I watched Rodney on VHS hitting my "frame by frame button" on the VCR to try and figure out just HOW he managed to pull off this magic of physics so I could learn it. Rodney isn't just amazing at what he does, but he's also just a really rad human being.
Have you played the Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1-3? If not, download an emulator with the ROMS, connect a controller and prepare to lose a lot of hours in the most legendary skateboarding series of all time.
Mullen made a career of doing the impossible. The man is an icon. I've never been on a skateboard in my life, but I still have a whole collection of VHSs of his and Bob Burnquist's stuff.
I've been fascinated watching Rodney Mullen since the 80's when freestyle wasn't as cool as Vert. He always blew my mind, the warehouse scene from Gleaming the Cube was him as a stunt double. Years of practice and reflexes of a mongoose plus maybe a deal between Powell Peralta & Satan made him a living legend. Got to meet him in person cool dude ridiculous to see Olympic skill in front of you in the early 90's.
Ok yes i am uderrating him. he has lots of cool tricks, many of which i loved to do on the videogame, i never managed to do an ollie, most i did was getting off the sidewalk to the street at speed.
Rodney is such a wholesome guy. Im 33 now and was very into skateboarding during the thps days. I havent skated in decades now but miss and still respect skateboarding as much as I did then and it is because of legends like him.
AAAAAAH I LOVE THIS. I've been obsessed with the intermediate axis theorem since like grade 10; learning the explanation in second year undergrad was one of the great satisfactions of my education.
Yeah, that's a good bunch of technical skaters. The difference is probably that Mullen was one of the first to take freestyle to the streets? Atleast in that mullen style
I used to skate in high school and Rodney was everyone’s hero. He literally created everything that allowed street skating to become what it is. His knowledge and fascination of physics is part of his charisma and is a huge contributor to his skating abilities. Although I don’t skate anymore, Rodney is still an idol of mine.
He never really wanted all the fame and attention. He talks about it in his TED Talk. Once the world of skateboarding kind of moved past his era of street skating, he ended up feeling a rush of freedom. He didn't have to compete to defend his "champion" title anymore, and he was free to just create and give back to the skating community.
@@sicklyskates3116 I said his /era/ of street skating. Meaning that street skating moved on after he innovated and added so much style to the scene. The first era was when kids rode boards just to get from point a to point b. Then there was the Mullen era. Then the modern era.
I love Rodney. He's the perfect embassador for skateboarding. He basically invented modern skateboarding and most of the tricks we do today, and he's still so humble about it!!
I earnestly love walking to the skate park and watching folk skate about while thinking about physics. From the beautifully fluid motion that skaters bodies go through as they compensate for changes in terrain to the unique experience of seeing a human go sideways across a vertical wall, it is simply the glory of physics put on display by the poetry of skateboarding. Also, I'm pretty sure Rodney Mullen is a wizard. Great vid, new sub!
Its a completely different trick on flat ground. It requires YOU to create the momentum instead of using the pools transition. Is actually not even close to being the same trick. Alan Gelfand not only used the pools transition for the momentum but also executed the trick when coming off ther coping which is naturally going to creating the illusion of being something more than a no handed aerial. No stomp no scoop no ollie. It's like saying you jumped when you were actually thrown. The most it could have possibly done was give Rodney the idea. Different psychics altogether. The flatgroung ollie was the single greatest achievement in sports history. Imho. This man is a true genius in the most basic sense of the word. Someone should start a petition to have Rodney credited with inventing the ollie. Or simply stop calling Alans an ollie because it wasn't. Enough is enough already.
rodmac1974 I agree with your assessment about the Ollie. People can clearly see it in the old Powell peralta Public Domain video that came out in the late 80s. I too started skating in the 80s.

You are in front of skateboarding royalty! He invented WAY more than the impossible. Try like 85% in not more of the flip tricks we know and love today.
Skateboarding is 'the house that Rodney built.' Every flip trick ever starts with the basics Rodney made possible. Tony Hawk even says vert only progressed because they wanted to keep up with Rodney.
Skateboards don't have springs, per se, but the board itself will spring about whatever fulcrum you are popping off. Not everyone who skates understands this, but most skaters can feel it and identify when a board has lost its springiness. We have called it the board's "pop" for as long as I have been skating. The bushings (pads within the trucks that help control steering) can also be used as another source of springiness, which is easier to use when actually spinning (since you typically need to push into a pocket of the board before jumping). There is a ton more at play, but some people may find these extra details interesting. They are crucial!!
@@zogrush the reason most boards lose their pop is because they begin to razor tail so the point of contact with the ground becomes larger so the energy disperses more across the larger surface area

Even now, in 2024, he's still skating at 57 year old.
Goober tuber rodney is like a monk
tony hawk is not humble...
Calm Z . But why do you have such a problem with those two posters? It seems that a simple explanation of ego and such would have sufficed without having to negatively talk about the posters.
Hawk just was very lucky and got crazily famous, nothing really special about him
Rodney Mullen is such a humble man, he hardly told you he invented the impossible. But what he didn't mention was he invented the flat ground ollie, kick flip, heelflip and 20+ other tricks. He should have been the one with the skateboarding games... He pioneered skateboarding into what it is today.
Yeah exactly he was the first to do an ollie which is the main point of skateboarding today. I know him thanks to the Tony Hawks games he was there with the sick manual tricks and of course the videos
Thats not humble that's just putting yourself down

Rodney has been my favorite skater since I was a kid. It's so awesome to grow up and see him as that same overly caring/nice individual.
yeah me too, my brother was all for Tony Hawk. But i saw a skate vid of Rodney and was blown away by his style and finesse on the board. I would love to meet him one day.
@@firebender666 Yeah as a kid he instantly became my favorite when I saw his intro skate videos in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games, I always loved how smoothly and seemingly effortlessly his style flowed. Despite never having taken up skating myself, and despite all the other professionals I started to see both in games, and live, he always held that spot. Watching his videos a decade later, hearing his interviews, and seeing the tricks he invented (many of which have always been some of my absolute favorites,) I can't help to constantly build more and more respect for him and how he helped pioneer skating as a whole.

I love how casual Rodney is about being credited with creating tricks. I guess when you came up with like 90% of them, it becomes normal.
it's more than just "creating some tricks." Mullen is a physical genius and a kind of artist.
Because he's not out to impress people, he skates because it's what he loves.
Thomas Donalek thank You I love Rodney Myself he's Amazing and a great Skater he inspired me to skate and could possibly be my distant cousin cause I do have his last name and He does have alittle Irish in him like I do on my father's side.

This video definitely doesnt give Mullen enough credit. He INVENTED the ollie, the kickflip, and the impossible.
also 360 flip, heelflip, gazelle flip and bunch of other tricks.
He did not invent the Ollie. He invented the flat ground Ollie. The Ollie was being done in pools for some time already.
rodmac1974 I agree with your assessment about the Ollie. People can clearly see it in the old Powell peralta Public Domain video that came out in the late 80s. I too started skating in the 80s.

Most skaters I know at the age of 50 aren’t skaters anymore, not because they don’t want to be, just because they no longer can. The better you once were, the more likely you are to still be doing it, because you didn’t spend all of your time hurting yourself because you were good.

Awesome! Rodney is a legend
OH MY GOD THIS IS EVERYTHING THANK YOU, I still can’t believe you met Mullen wtfffffff
I can tell you as a skateboarder my hero was never Tony Hawk it was Rodney Mullen and to see him still flex this stuff like its nothing it beyond amazing. To avoid any comments yes i did love Tony and what he did, i did surely respect him all im saying is he is the man the rest of the world thinks of when thinking skateboarding, for me that unbound hero was Rodney.
rodney is the godfather. yet you have to pull teeth to get him to say it. and even when he does he just laughs and says "people call me that". he's so humble. he's like your favorite magician's favorite magician. you will likely never know their name because they're too focused on their art to even care if you did.
"It's a similar shape to something I play with every day..."
Huuuuh????
"...my phone!"
Ohhh - yeah. I mean, that's what I was thinking anyway.
labibbidabibbadum lmao
Lmao
Thought it!!
If your genitals, male or female are shaped like a skateboard I would see or consult a doctor..
@@switch-no-comply778 well. There's dildos
Rodney is an amazing human being! I feel so blessed to have grown up watching his artistry, and sharing a love of the same medium! If you get a chance, look up his TED talk. Very inspiring!
hawk gets all the attention but Rodney is the true goat of skating.
Fun fact: Rodney invented most all of the flip tricks we still do today.
(Ps i love him, he such a great guy)
rodneys the goat
I feel like this was half a video
alex borrington, perfectly said. Though, was particularly nice seeing Rodney discussing skateboarding with a non-skateboarder that has half a brain and getting into the science of it. Can’t say I’ve seen that before.
Pretty sure Mullen didn't just land the first impossible, he also landed the first kick flip and the first flatland ollie. Mullen IS the father of modern freestyle skateboarding. A real god among men. And so so humble too! Tanks for this awesome treat!
Don Johnson He invented the Impossible lmao
Geezy BT he knows he said didnt just invent it, as in he also invented other things.
Fernando Gonzalez ohhhh damn whoops I read it wrong ahaha, my bad. I read it as "Mullen didn't land the first impossible", didn't notice the "just" in there ahahah dw
dfss csss that was on transition though. Rodney invented the first flatground ollie which is arguably a totally different trick, as you're not using already built up momentum to propel yourself.
dfss csss mullen invented the flatground ollie though
5:52 Making Rodney Mullen of all people say "he learned something" has to be a top tier achievement in physics education
You are in front of skateboarding royalty! He invented WAY more than the impossible. Try like 85% in not more of the flip tricks we know and love today.
David Dwayne ikr! Literally the perfect person to do this video with
Skateboarding is 'the house that Rodney built.' Every flip trick ever starts with the basics Rodney made possible. Tony Hawk even says vert only progressed because they wanted to keep up with Rodney.
Coming back to this 2 years later and really I think it's cool you let Rodney talk about physics. The man is seriously a genius. Possibly a Savant
They are crucial!!
yeah like a waterloged board
@@zogrush the reason most boards lose their pop is because they begin to razor tail so the point of contact with the ground becomes larger so the energy disperses more across the larger surface area
Love watching her Geek out, and Mr. Mullen just a gawd among us mortals.
