      I thought New Vegas was severely over-rated. More RPG elements and choices than FO3, sure... but that, and iron-sights was about the only thing it did better for me. I know it's meant to be a desert, but not only did the map feel empty but also severely lacking in details and locations. Felt way too spaced out. I thought the story and factions were awful too. The majority of the game was one massive chore for me. I honestly don't see what everyone else sees in it.

I think its shameful that Bethesda never tried to expand on the strong rpg elements ever again
      These days, new vegas is only good with mods. I love that game more than anything, but not even I would ever play it unmodded again. Fellow NV supremacist here. Some really good points you make , but I do think it's a bit reductive to pin quite so much direct blame solely onto Toddy, or any singular face in a group. Like , ofc he has had an outsized role in those decisions to keep the IP's on ice instead of maximizing their potential, but in reality these decisions are hardly made in a vacuum and rarely the result purely of a single man's ego-stroking. If we replaced Tod, would we really expect Bethesda to bevahe so differently to now ?
    I think it's kinda the same for those who are like "Emil is the devil" and believe that the whole of Starfield's writing woes are due to the incomprehensible incompetence of this single developer.

    • @billjacobs521
      @billjacobs521 3 місяці тому +7

      But Emil is the head writer, who has made the conscious choice to abandon design documents and just not care about lore. He's admitted it. I don't see why we shouldn't blame him for bad writing. As for Todd, I can't say--he's the mouthpiece but I don't know how powerful he really is.

    • @pkheartbreak
      @pkheartbreak 3 місяці тому +3

      @@billjacobs521 I don't mean to suggest that there's no fault to be had , especially if you're lead of your team - but in his case there are still other game design and production requirements that inform the math a lead or team leader might make.
      I'm only as informed as a outsider can be with respect to internal power dynamics, operations, culture, hierarchy , or whatever else at Beth that might count towards that math. Which is why I'm always hesitant to just point and say this particular person is the sole cause of the thing I like sucking. Because usually its more complex than that. Like, if they replaced Emil, can we really posit that we'd get better writing ? Why ?
      Clearly in SF's case , it was a poor call to disregard any sort of conventional narrative documentation that may have helped in making a more cohesive narrative - at the same time I would find it doubtful that Emil himself as Lead Writer AND Design Director could conceivably be the sole cause for SF's issues. He was probably in Google meetings more often than he ever wrote.
      If , hypothetically , Emil didn't respect or cherish the input of his subordinate team members, was then replaced with someone with the same issue of not listening, it could then be argued that its a company culture issue rather than a strictly Emil issue.
      When it comes to Todd its the same thing. Yes, you're the CD and its your ship to captain, but at the same time CD's aren't kings and require the cooperation and support of their team to make anything happen. People who may have differing interests, motives, philosophies, or whatever else.
      All I'm saying is that blaming any single person for the debilitating issues facing a massive multi-whateverillion dollar, several-hundred person strong company is kinda naïve and ignoring that projects like Bethesda are not small indie studios and don't function like one.

It used to be that the water merchants in The Hub managed to get an old bottling facility back up and running and would accept the caps for a discount on the next shipment of water. By Fallout 2 this was made obsolete as the NCR dollar which was backed by gold, but between Fallout 2 and New Vegas a war between the NCR and BoS led to the NCR’s gold supply getting destroyed which meant The Hub’s water barons had all of the monetary power again.

    I felt like I agreed on the entire video up until the half, where it started to feel like you became misdirected by the online usual rethoric of blaming Todd for everything without looking at the deeper picture. At no point I saw mention of Emil Pagliarulo's design philosophy that came about from fucking up the design document for Fallout 3, how the company that made FO76 is not the main Bethesda team, but rather, a B-team that pulled all the stops to try and drill into the spaghetti code they were given and actually managed to make FO76's engine somewhat stable. That alone is a feat (regardless of game content) that Bethesda Maryland wouldn't even bother with.
    I didn't see how the company has an insanely low new hire retention rate, how people come and go and the technicians capable of reprogramming the engine are long gone, how each employee essentially does the best they can with what they have and know, because the company prides itself on improvizing without a centralized documentation database (courtesy again, of Emil), that includes not just design but also technical specs on how to wrangle the engine. So short of fixing it, Bethesda duct tape extensions onto it as stopgap solutions (Fallout 4's UI/HUD is an emulated Shockwave Flash player, for instance!). The notion that modders do a better job than Bethesda critically comes from modders at least having multiple centralized wikis to coordinate knowledge from. Blame Emil for making this taboo at Bethesda.
    I also saw at no point mention of Robert Atlman, the late CEO, who signed that investment deal with the Providence Inc. Banking corporation that proudly advertised Zenimax/Bethesda on their website, for maxing out income for the next 5 years starting 2015, which explains all of the weird maximized profit bollocks we've seen Bethesda do with their games and owned IPs (hello, Wolfenstein 2, hello Youngblood, hello Doom Eternal, hello paid mods, etc), because Zenimax would therefore get a stock market permit with a higher rank on opening day, depending on their performance. That deal fell under and soon after, Atlman died and Microsoft conveniently waited the end of that publicly known contractual probation period to snipe an acquisition out of them.
    I think your video is pretty great on many points, but it really does feel like at some point you stopped carrying out your own analysis and started to parrot (no pun intended) the same overcooked and convenient good-vs-evil talking points people love to regurgitate online without looking at the whole crime scene.

      this backwards tribalism of new-age New Vegas fans just baffles. While i agree Starfield is not quite a game everybody had envisioned to game, these crybabies bash Bethesda as being this "invisible haters of New Vegas, a boogeyman like the Institute from Fallout 4"
      What a pathetic bunch of losers, i can also say the same in the polar opposite, where there are people gatekeeping Bethesda Fallouts and telling that New Vegas and classics are not even "good games.
      These people can't even grasp the single concept of letting people enjoy their favourite Fallout. It matters not if you enjoy New Vegas, 3; 4 and/or 76 exclusively, just be happy they exist, man.

      Long as people can buy the games of a series, it lives on. Stripping the ability for new people to experience a classic, or any opus of a franchise, is what kills it.
      I love the Stargate TV shows, for example, and the constant chaotic shuffling of ownership right claims from MGM, Amazon, Tencent and whoever else, broke the airing rights apart, and has rendered the chances of newcomers enjoying Stargate SG1/Atlantis/Universe close to nil. For instance, the afore mentioned house Telvanni was a clan of powerful reclusive mages who mostly just want to be left alone to conduct their research. Their homes are all grown from mushrooms and there's no stairs connecting the upper and lower sections, which means if you aren't a spellcaster at least powerful enough to cast levitate to float up and reach them in the inaccessible areas, they see you as beneath them and don't even want to talk to you. 1) Want to grift modded content for money from suckers.
    2) Prevent modders from releasing ground-breaking mods that upstage their writing/gameplay.
    I've noticed this for a decade now, because 10 years ago they weren't dolling out patches to just stifle modders, not like they are today, where the patch notes barely even make a difference and most of the patches aren't even geared for PC specific issues, let alone performance updates (the last PC specific update we got was with Skyrim Special edition way back in 2016 and that added refined mod support).

Pretty much everyone I know that has the game on PC adds *AT LEAST* 20 mods just to make it playable and fun - the unofficial patch, an ENB for visuals, some manner of combat, perk, magic and enemy overhauls, a difficulty mod that changes the dogwater "difficulty" system from vanilla, etc etc.

      @@PeterHarlequinWhite Every single Fallout game that Bethesda didn't work on showed two things:
      1. Factions rising and falling in an endless cycle
      2. The world advancing
      Between Fallout 1 and 2 we see the wasteland go from small towns with a few settlements with ~25 people living in them to towns everywhere and several cities with hundreds or thousands of residences (lore-wise not what's shown in game). They establish trade, currency, jobs, politics, militaries, everything you need to call yourself a country. In New Vegas we see factions start to crumble, the Brotherhood, once the most powerful faction in the wasteland usurped by the NCR, which is also starting to reach the limits of it's power. Just because the factions die doesn't mean everyone spontaneously forgets how to be civilized and just goes back to being raiders. Hell look at real-world civil wars (closest thing we have to compare to Fallout). The major power is challenged, there is temporary anarchy, then a new power is established and order is slowly restored until a new faction shows up and repeat endlessly.
      The line 'war never changes' is referring to the factions / people, not the world. That's the 'whole point' of Fallout. Not the 1950's retrofuture world that was nuked. It's a POST-apocalypse game, the apocalypse isn't the focus, what comes AFTER is.

      @@averagemug Obsidian entertainment was founded in 2003, Bethesda bought the fallout IP in 2007, but Obsidian was just a fledgling studio with only two games under their belt (KotOR 2 and NWN 2) by that time while Bethesda had over a decade of experience and game development, had already gone through 2 potential bankruptcies and throughout their growing catalog had 2 games released that were not only critically acclaimed but also completely innovative and revolutionary for their time, which remain to this day 2 of the best RPGs ever made, those being Daggerfall and Morrowind.
      Bethesda doesn't make RPGs anymore, they haven't arguably since Oblivion, but definitely since fallout 3, they make immersive action-adventure/looter-shooter games with some RPG elements, the same level of RPG elements that call of duty has at this point. Their writing and storytelling have gone completely down the drain, the fixation on not limiting the player based on decisions while on the surface seems great has actually lead to a less meaningful and thus a less impactful game, nevermind the overuse of essential NPCs which devolves into overt handholding, while the accidental soft locking of progression through the death of NPCs like what could happen in Morrowind may be frustrating, and while I understand that the more intricate and indepth the npc pathing and routine cycles became the more necessary the essential tag became to stop necessary NPCs from walking off a cliff to their deaths, or pathing into a hostile npc and getting slaughtered half way across the world away from you locking your progression through no fault of your own, it just seems like a lazy fix and is immensely immersion breaking when you lay into an annoying npc only to watch them stand back up like nothing happened.

      It had a memory leak issue where every time you went into a new loading point and came to a new section of the game the RAM use ballooned. I managed to finish the game but you could only play it in small increments because of that memory leak. There is a mod that alleviates a lot of those symptoms but that older engine really didn't like what Obsidian did with it. I also remember getting stuck in walls and objects quite frequently. Learning how to use the console and no clip was somewhat essential. The engine they use is very antiquated, even the more beefed up engine that was used in Fallout 4 is super clunky when compared to modern engines like Unreal 5. They aren't the only study that has suffered this issue. BioWare and the Frostbite engine are another casualty in old clunky engines.

The IP would have been "saved" regardless, and Fallout 3 sold well simply because Bethesda was a big company who already made games like Morrowind and Oblivion.
