it is tho, if a keyboard is prebuilt or unmodded its likely to not sound the best, for lack of sound dampening, lubing, shitty low quality plastic, scratchy feel, and that is still evident here with the hollow sound and rattly stabs. For people who don't know: custom keyboards are expensive because they are small community or small business based projects that often only have one production run. These companies do not benefit from economies of scale and that explains the cost.
You can tell me all you want that my split 40% has terrible build quality and shouldn't have cost close to a thousand dollars but there was no other option for me. I had to have that layout. For other people they just absolutely need lubed switches and stabilizers, for others it's about the keycaps. It's less about buying a product and more akin to satiating an addiction. A clack-addiction.

It’s the same with musical instruments, law of diminishing returns. A $10k custom guitar does not sound 10 times better than a $1000 guitar. The reason why customs are expensive is cos of production cost and it’s niche-ness.
Out of all keyboard users, majority are using membrane keyboards. Out of the minority using mechanical, majority are just gonna use a pre-built as they’re cheaper. So with that small market using mechanical + custom parts, production cost is definitely higher and not many people around to buy, so they have no choice to amp up the price tag to stay afloat.
PS: to those saying I can’t compare music instruments with keyboards, note that I’m just comparing specific attributes. That’s like saying “lemon is sour like lime” is wrong. If you can’t draw parallel between things, you can shove it up your -

    • @Cer049
      @Cer049 2 роки тому +17

Wait how is this a case of diminishing returns? Customs just cost more cause the production costs are higher, mass produced products will always be cheaper than custom made ones

    • @damnfreakingsien
      @damnfreakingsien 2 роки тому +80

@@Cer049 think about it. between a $20 and a $200 keyboard, most people can agree that the $200 keyboard will offer quite a lot in return. But as you reach $400 and beyond, majority of the differences are barely noticeable.
Sounds very similar to audiophile equipment, except that audiophile's diminishing returns are even more noticeable.
In fact I actually prefer my mechanical keyboard to have "mainstream features" like "wireless bluetooth" or "working function keys out of the box" which the ultra expensive keyboards sadly never offers other than "sound" or "premium-feeling".
And yes high production cost plays a role. But because the manufacturers also know that since most people are unwilling to spend on these expensive parts, they have no choice but to market it to an enthusiast crowd and amped up the prices even higher to recoup.

The mechanical keyboard hobby is somewhat similar to other hobbies I've had in the past and the prevailing thing I noticed in all of those is that since a lot of people aren't willing to spend more for arguably "better" quality, companies can control the prices of their products without affecting much of their demand. To my understanding, the demand isn't affected by the increased price because the market isn't as competitive compared to other products.
In the end of the day, I hope other people don't scoff at the idea of hobbyists spending relatively insane amounts of money on something they view as miniscule or irrelevant.

As a mech keyb enthusiast myself, the way a $400 keyb can sound/feel worse than a run of the mill gaming keyboard is that it’s preference. Just because something is expensive or custom doesn’t mean it’s gonna be better or you’re gonna like it better. I say a budget keyb that you love to use is better than an expensive one that you end up hating.

The difference in terms of temperature isn't so noticeable (an aio will do you more than enough), but custom loops allow you to make it look like you want and you have the experience of building it, which is nice, but you pay a lot more for it. So is it worth it ? It depends on who you ask

I wanted a keyboard with a nice keycap set, Zealios V2 switches (one of the best tactile switches around. Cherry browns feel like pressing on cardboard in comparison), and a full keyboard layout. That last part in combination with the 5 pin switches meant that my options were comically limited. The only kit I found that would fit my standards had to be shipped from Korea at a premium.
My keyboard ended up costing more than a midrange pc. But, it's what I wanted, so that's ok.

Custom keyboards nowadays don't care about functionality. Tons of people know that if they want a smooth, durable and reliable keyboard, they should get a hall effects or a optical keyboard.
Most custom keyboards nowadays only focuses on the aesthetics of the board more than actual feel or functionality. That is why you can see in the market it's focused on things like the board's materials, colours and looks.
Heck, people literally only cared about looks so much that they released the same fucking switches with different colours for them with little to minute changes and called it a new thing.

Yeah and that $200 keyboard is functionally the same as a 20 dollar membrane keyboard.
The whole appeal of a "custom" keyboard is in the configuration. Choosing case material and design, size, layout, switches, pcb, case foam material, key caps etc.
It just happens that buying those components individually is more expensive given the economy of scale.
    There is no conspiracy.

I know this is a joke, but yeah, it's all personal preference, like the audiophile world and whatever the word is for people who are super serious about picture quality.
I'm kind of a light audiophile. I have a very particular sound profile that I like. Thankfully it's not ridiculously expensive (around 300 to 400 dollars for total equipment) like some setups. My SO is much less picky about her sound and the only reason her setup costs around $100 is because she wanted decent comfort and I bought her a set that were comfortable and not likely to break. She's happy and I'm happy.
I find that so many people get sucked into enthusiast worlds because of hype and not because of being dissatisfied with their current equipment or because of general interest. They don't think to examine whether they're actually satisfied, and the community just says what the like and the sales people eat it up. It's getting better as far as the community goes but it's still problematic and ends up with a lot of wasted money for not much perceptual gain for the customer.
So yeah, no matter how much the keyboard enthusiast warriors get onto you for using rubber domes, if you don't have any problem with them, then don't give into the hype and pressure of mechanical keyboards. You will save a lot of money by not buying something you probably aren't the customer for.

I know it's not serious video but for people who actually don't understand why so many people prefer custom keyboards over gaming ones, it's mostly about sound, feel and quality. Most gaming keyboards have wobbly and extremely loud stabilisers, cheap scratchy switches and are hollow inside which gives them unpleasant hollow sound (there are other problems like cheap ABS keycaps but these are three most important) and cost 180USD, with custom keyboard you can get Keychron V1 (barebones goes for around 65usd is wireless, has silicone pad inside and foam on top of PCB to remove hollowness and has hotswap PBC meaning you don't have to use soldering iron to swap switches). Then you can buy gateron milky yellow switches (imo one of the best linear switches out there) for around 25usd for 70 switches (it should be enough for keychron V1), set of durock v2 stabilisers for 20USD and some krytox 205g0 lube for both stabs and switches for 10USD , one switch opener for like 3USD and some PBT dye sub keycaps (prices of cheaper ones range from 20-40USD depending on set) and you get amazing sounding keyboard for around 140-180USD that you can mod to improve it's feeling and sound with mods like tempest mod, PE mod, force break mod or any other mod you want. TL:DR you actually pay less to get better keyboard than corsair, razer, steelseries or hyperX

For some reason i keep watching these videos even though i have no intention of buying another keyboard, much less of making one.

switches are replaced and lubed, then some mods are added. not to mention keycaps are a bit pricey. some spray paint the casing so that's extra $$. also there's a labor fee. 400$ sure is expensive for a keyboard but the high quality ones are pricier.

I genuinely think that big brand mechanical keyboard is better than custom keyboards because of good software, game integration, and a warranty.

You can get a good gaming keyboard for like 60-100 bucks , you can also get a good sounding custom keyboard for around the same money

As a custom keyboard enthusiast myself, I can say you just flat out got scammed, watch some videos and do it yourself next time, the person who made your custom, did not know what to get, and did not know what they were doing.

Custom keyboards are very subjective. IMO what may seem to be shit keeb for others is actually another person's GOAT keeb. I just knew since a lot of people still tries to talk me out about how low profile keebs are shit while I love them for comfort.
It's not about getting the most expensive thing the store can offer, it's just more about the experience. It has become an expensive hobby too since people are always trying to find where they can feel comfortable about.
That is especially true for me since I spend more than half of my day on my PC both for work and gaming. For me it's like picking the best tool that just goes well with my small 5-year old like hands who types like a t-rex.

Gaming keyboard is fine if you can ignore the rattly spacebars and low quality thin keycaps.
However now there are options from epomaker/Yunzii/Keychron that blow every prebuilt gaming keyboard out of the water for the same price and sometimes as low as half the price. There is no real reason to ever buy a Logitech/steelseries/razer/asus keyboard now.
