    Wasn't expecting to see my vid mentioned here, thanks so much for the shoutout!!
    it was rly interesting seeing ur thoughts on accel but especially your breakdown of each accel curve, doubly so since we seemed to settle on similar options. I struggled to adjust to super harsh "jump" curves and motivity felt the most intuitive for me as well but I still ended up preferring no accel. I'd be curious to see if you run into the same roadblock I did with it if you end up sticking with it long term, but I agree that it's something that there's no reason not to at least try out :D

      and this is the most important part, i hate to goto the discord and see people asking for "best" or "others" specific curves for a game. There is too many variance and you do have to use your own formula and calculation to truely perfect it into your playstyle and preference. Once you've done this it is truely better, like you'll simply feel like it is an enhancing factor to your aim as you gradually see improvement.

    I tried this myself over a two-week period. I share the same sentiments especially with the first portion of your movement being accelerated. I went with "jump" first then "motivity" just like you. My conclusion was that its effectiveness depends a lot on the game you play. In a game like CS2 I found it to be generally worse for me overall.

      it takes more than 2 weeks to master something new especially if you spend years or decades training for the opposite.
      ive been playing using acceleration for about 25 years and ignored the so-called advice. its fine. ive been called a cheater for longer than i can remember.
      the real reason i use it though is comfort, same reason why it's nice on the desktop too. it allows you to have the same range of motion for small and large adjustments so you do not need repeated large arm movements or huge desks.
      i dont think that people who played on fixed sens for decades should learn accel, itll take a year at least to really get used to it and youll probably still have some muscle memory kick in from time to time.

    been using accel for almost 5 years now, with my latest curve being under development for the past 17 months. This thing takes time, and lots of adjustments based on goal, deviation, grip, weight, friction, motion-sync and body energy of that day.
    The number one suggestion I could give is to only change settings on a cold-start (first time of the day you sit at your pc, within the first 15-30 minutes of opening overwatch). Also, don't fear turning off any cap, yes it might sound scary at first coming from a static sens, but your brain compensate for that. Learnt this too many years into it....

    Multi-year aim accel user here. You hit the nail on the head with this video. Aim accel is an awesome tool with lots of potential and a versatility that can be applied to many different aiming scenarios. A few months ago, after seeing Viscose's video on why they stopped using it, I decided to give it a try. I've really enjoyed playing on a static sensitivity again, but my journey as a mechanical player has been greatly impacted for the better by the years I spent playing with aim acceleration. For anyone who hasn't tried it, I'd highly recommend giving it a shot. Challenge your aim, get out of your comfort zone, master different kinds of aiming across different sensitivities and scenarios, and use sensitivity as the tool that it is, switching it up to best suit the requirements of a situation.

      because you seem to have alot of experience i got a question. i am roughly 6 weeks into mnk and gave raw accel a try but then i have seen alot of comments over multiple platforms that smaller movements and especially tracking (fast) targets gets alot worse. is that true or do people that say stuff like that just have wrong settings?

    • @evanrevvin
      @evanrevvin 5 місяців тому

      @@neednosoul9622Tracking fast targets is definitely where you start to run into a limitation of aim accel. I think you can make things easier by having a cap on the amount of acceleration that can be applied and changing when it kicks in. When tracking fast targets, I was close to the high end of my accel curve, so my sensitivity didn’t vary too harshly in those situations. If you haven’t seen viscose’s video on this topic, I’d highly recommend it. She highlights some of the limitations of using accel over a long period of time, and one of them is what you’ve mentioned. I wouldn’t describe accel making anything “a lot” worse. Its limitations show up in more subtle ways when you’ve been using it for a while and your curve feels intuitive.

    As a regular user of rawaccel for a few years, you have missed a really important feature: offset. Offset will cause the accel to not kick in unless you are moving at a certain speed or higher. It looks like a short flat area at the beginning of your curve and the control is the bottom textbox. It really helps minimize jitters and makes natural feel really nice.

  • @DavidEasthope

    Hot take: a proper acceleration curve is like the gear ratios on a car, and people who insist there's only one good movement speed sound like someone saying they just slam their car into second and leave it there because it's consistent and predictable, instead of taking advantage of the differences in low and high gears according to the situation.
    Expanding that, mouse acceleration is like having a CVT, while a DPI switch is like having a manual transmission to pick the "gear" you want.

      @_Ubomi set the offset so it only starts kicking in outside of the range of micro adjustments in game. Around 15-25 depending on how fast you move your mouse while micro adjusting. You want slow micro adjustments without acceleration and fast swipes with acceleration for target switching and doing a 180 etc

  • @phatthrak
    @phatthrak 5 місяців тому +74

    regarding the acceleration being too fast at the start of curve, most of the curves support setting an "input offset" that will essentially push the start of the curve to the right.

    i’m happy i used it, i feel it helped me get very good at adapting to high sens.
    at my deepest point i was using a custom LUT curve and wrote software to convert a desmos graph to the LUT accel graph. i had a specific linear zone into a quadratic zone and then a fnal boost and then it dipped back down for my fastest speed so i had slower flicks than my tracking. it was wild. but i’m back on flat sens now and i feel i can be good with either.

    I've been using acceleration for 2.5 years now. When I started out with acceleration I was also experimenting with Motivity like curves, before quickly feeling out that it felt wrong because of that resistance when starting and ending movement that Viscose described. I ended up settling on a completely linear 0.005 acceleration curve with no input/ cap offsets (a straight diagonal line on the graph), I've been playing with the same curve all this time and I find this the most natural and intuitive setting because it is directly a 1:1 acceleration based on the velocity of the mouse with no training wheels or stop gaps that would limit your potential for improvement. It took a while to get used to and is going to take a while before I fully master it, but I don't have the desire to return to no acceleration because of how much flexibility acceleration offers and how natural it feels.

    • @3ildcard
      @3ildcard 5 місяців тому +1

      I'd give linear a proper shot at some point but to me it felt purposeless the first time i tried it. Motivity on the other hand felt very good in Apex to look around faster and have it slow down when shooting.

    • @xzraiderzx308
      @xzraiderzx308 5 місяців тому +7

      @@3ildcard the problem imo is motivity is unnecessarily strong, it gives a strong first impression of mouse acceleration because of the really fast general movement speed in combination with a really strong slowdown of aim, but it’s not granular enough for aiming in every scenario due to the nature of the curve, it’s like a smooth jump curve, you practically either have fast movement or slow aim. With enough practice you’ll be able to push a linear curve to get the same benefits of acceleration while feeling like you have proper control of the acceleration. The dynamic curves just don’t make sense with the dynamic movement of a mouse imo, it does make sense with the linear motion of a controller stick though.

      @@xzraiderzx308 I've found motivity works really well *if* you make sure the growth rate isn't too high (the default of 1 is insane, and only gives you jump curves and that feeling of friction at low hand speeds), and make sure the midpoint is high enough. I've been running Motivity 1.6, Growth Rate 0.155, and Midpoint 11.5 (using the "Override Defaults" feature, so midpoint will not necessarily be the same for you), and it works well, though I did have to experiment quite a bit, and the settings are very sensitive to minor changes. For instance, I was running Mot 1.59, Growth 0.16, and Midpoint 11.75 and I found it noticeably less controllable (though still pretty good) despite the settings being almost identical.

I’ve tried my old 30-60 cm/360 non-accel sensitivities and it still felt comfortable. Any DPI is fine as long as it’s “native” as to not get any interpolation, smoothing or acceleration, which is why a year ago I switched to 2000 DPI with my 3360. Higher DPI is generally better as it lowers input lag and increases motion clarity, but most games don’t properly support high DPIs; sensitivity sliders won’t go low enough or there will be strange oddities like menus not using the Windows sensitivity.

I was planning on trying Raw Accel thinking I might be able to set a 2 step acceleration on it, but never could find a time to bother/risk ruining my current gameplay, but seeing it already has it as "Jump" means I need to download it now. 2 step acceleration is how mouse actually worked in Windows 9X. When XP came out with a new multi step acceleration everyone just went and turned it off thinking there was no mouse acceleration on 9X at all, but for me turning it off was completely different to 9X, it made my hand hurt and I had trouble to play at full speed. It was only years later I learned about 9X having a mouse movement speed threshold at which it switched to higher mouse sensitivity. Despite learning how to play on current default mouse acceleration, if I would suddenly sat at 9X I would just turn into flicking aimbot, it feels so natural you don't even notice the change of sensitivity. You can tune the threshold to accurately separate tracking/strafing from flicking, with a gentle knee. It works incredibly well for quake-likes when you want rapid 180's on both axis for rocket boosts *and* low speed adjustment for rails and lasers. I've left the same curve on for so long I prefer using it in desktop applications as well. The angle adjustment lets you tune the mouse so turning your hand naturally reads as a straight line regardless of whatever silly way you hold it (so long as you're consistent). And, the anisotropy lets you balance out the lack of vertical travel you get when your hand is on the desk.
    People act like linearity is so incredibly useful and intuitive or something, but really, it's way more practical to have a higher dynamic range for your cursor velocity.

    Just going to point something out here:
    When most people say mouse accel sucks, they are either talking about the windows default, or about something a game dev has baked into the game .
    I honestly wouldn't call rawaccel mouse acceleration to begin with. I'd call it input filtering. Especially in the context of trying to use it to eliminate jitter.
    I personally prefer no accel just for the simple factor of reliability. As you acknowledged in the video, for most competitive games, aim isn't the biggest limiting factor. Gamesense (positioning, flow, and mental map accuracy) is more important by far to good performance. You don't need to flick if you know exactly where they are coming from before they even hit the entry point, after all. Also, as you pointed out, it depends on the game whether it helps or hinders. As opposed to no-accel, where it just 'is' and doesn't change in usability with the game.

    Great video man! Gorgeous quality and I actually learned something. I've installed Raw Accel, gonna see how it really feels for myself (It might actually help with my shitty aim).

    A great video. I used mouse accel throughout the 00s because it was the default in Win XP etc. Then like 10-15 years ago I hopped on the hype train that you should disable mouse acceleration in CS Source (and then CS:GO). It's always been in the back of my mind if transitioning from accel to no accel was good. Now I'm thinking if I should give it a go after all these years.

    Great video. There's a reason why devs offer acceleration in games, but fans always know best :P

    you should make a video on mousepads, i wanna know more about the new ones and i feel you would explain them really well

    Damn man thanks so much, I am so happy right now. I never thought what the absence of mouse accel was the issue for me. I am so used to the mouse accel in cs source...

    MAN mouse acceleration is the bane of my existence. I need consistency in my aim, if I need to reach a target faster I just move my hand faster.

    I feel like most people say to turn off mouse accel because of all this trouble you have to go through, but it may just be better. (love the vid btw)

    Many gaming mice have "precission" buttons on the side that are easy accessable with your thumb. You can set up a usual DPI speed, and a specific speed for when you push that button.
    That way you can get both, high and low speed, whenever you want or need it.

    i might have to try this out. older gamers remember a time when mouse accel was pretty much just... the way it was.

    Well done video, switched from Custom Curve (I believe a python runtime) to rawaccel. I prefer to set my max accel to my mouse dpi so flicks are consistent muscle memory and everything else is deceleration. Rawaccel doesn't seem to make that easy, lots of number fudging and eyeballing an asymptote only to get close. Now that I have it set, it's working nicely.
    For me, mouse accel just helps so much in smoothing out the aging motor control in my hand. No longer steady enough to 180 and microadjust on a static dpi.

    i love that you touched on the fact that aim really isnt important for winning games. positioning beats aim like 8/10 times

      If you cant hit your enemy you will still loose. So yeah, you can compromise a bit, but you need a decent base level of aim

      @@lokoo_ right but if you prioritize mechanics over positioning and util you’ll probably end off worse than you were before. Coming from a counter strike player that prioritizes mechanics.

      @@6laka. if you want to play at the highest level, you have to learn both either way. I focused on gamesence first, and now my aim is shit, so you will be missing something either way

    one thing i'll say, if you do use mouse accel, make sure to turn it off after a while and get practice in with your raw sense, I don't know what it is but sticking to a curve for too long just does something to your aim, so it's good to hop back to flat every once in a while.

    Theory checks out. Fitts law states as a UI element to interact with is further away from the cursor the longer it takes to hit, go figure. Interesting and worth a read into it however. During my PhD I took a low pass filter to try improve accuracy during VR interaction. It also works insanely well. Depending on the values set allows you to adjust small movement where it's not enabled and fast movement where it is enabled.
