@Dave Micolichek who cares about what was banned in USA or not? USA doesn't have any racing heritage other than maybe the Nascars constantly turning left lol. The Wankel is extremely reliable, but not durable. Do you know how long an F1 engine lasts? Do you know the TBO of aircraft piston engines? The real issue is that Wankels aren't good for making millions of "normal people" commuters like buses, sedans and crossovers, so it never got enough R&D
@Dave Micolichek what Mazda meant that they're a relatively small company, they cant make it happen with just their own R&D alone and keeping to do so may result in their bankruptcy. Like i said, I treat Wankels as F1 engines or turboprop engines. They produce twice the amount of power for the same weight. Almost the same as two stroke engines. Now two stroke turbo diesels are already being used for huge ship engines so i doubt they need the wankel. But the thing about wankel is that even after catastrophic failure it can still keep working, producing some power since it rotates instead of reciprocating. A wankel with the same weight of F1 and built with the same manufacturing tolerances will make twice as much power.
@Dave Micolichek piston aircraft engines fill a certain niche. Even homebuilt planes make 100-200miles per gallon of fuel. Turbines aren't as efficient at low altitudes, its only better because of high power to weight ratio. That's where wankel shines.
@Dave Micolichek and as for my two cents, wankels should be made from ground up to work at a specific RPM and specific temperature, so that when it heats up the gaps close tightly. Maybe then use it to run an electric generator, or an actual CVT transmission (not the ones that make fake RPM up-down stuff) or use it in an airplane where the governor rotates the propeller at constant RPM. And since the latest concept cars from Mazda are electric hybrids, maybe they're thinking about this too

This is a good start. Arming oneself with this information and some more specific information, one could plausibly identify specific cars or engines by their sound, right? Not just "sounds like a Ferrari" or "sounds like a BMW", but being able to hear different characteristics of the sound, infer the number of cylinders in the engine, the rotation of the crank, and the type of exhaust system, figure out what manufacturer, and if possible which car or cars it could be, if more than one make an indiscernible sound from another.
