    Phil i sit here in Sydney Australia till nearly midnight watching your videos.. You are such an awesome turner and I talk to you as I watch .. Shady Acres Workshop is my favorite channel you inspire me to try new things .. You have such a modest demeaner and I don't think you realize just how good you are my friend .. Cheers from Glenn P.S. We are in our 3rd week of lockdown from this bloody Covid virus...

      Such a very kind comment, Glenn, thank you! I'm so glad you are tying new things! Sorry about the lockdown. We are fully open, here, for about the past week. Let's hope it stays that way.

    I agree with you Phil, it did turn out really, really well. Sure, it may well have been your first attempt at a 'Tri Corner Bowl but I would have been prepared to put a heavy wager on it being an outstanding result such is the skill & mastery of your craft over a long time. By the ay, I would have won my wager but seriously, A lovely piece of workmanship Phil & very worthy of you. Love the finish you achieved and you didn't even do the 'glue up'. Outstanding mate, keep up the good work. Regards, Don.

    Very Interesting way of turning...I love the smell of Oak...This project was an excellent choice and very well executed..I feel as I could do it after watching...I like that you stop a lot & let us all catch up with your progress and concerns...Phil you are not just offering another wood turning video but a small adventure into the unknown, unexplored...This being your first time on this technique....GREAT!!!!!...Another One YES, WITH BUG HOLES...ha....Thank You Phil...tm

    Yeah, as you say good job, Phil. That looks brilliant and I would have no idea of how to have done that. Had I not seen you do it?. Oak is one of my favourite woods and you really have done this piece justice. Yet again, you have proved that you can make something absolutely beautiful out of a bit of scrap wood!!

    Hi Phil, I watched your video and Gary’s (ThePapa1947) and decided I’d like to make one. I wasn’t sure I could hold the work in the lathe as you did and I was correct. So I removed the corners so I had flat surfaces for the drive and live centres. It worked out well and I now have a tri-corner bowl about 115mm corner to corner and 70mm high. I started with a piece of mahogany 93x93x94mm.

    Hey Phil!
    Next tri corner bowl, cut your tenon first on the top. That way you can flip it and turn the bottom, I leave the tail stock up till almost done. Then you can mark the center of the bottom tenon for future reference.

    Hi Phil, what gouge grind do you use mostly before switching to a swept back gouge when that is needed. I tried the 40/40 grind and went back to the Irish (David Ellsworth) grind. I have watched this tri bowl and your second one. I’m motivated to try this as well. I’m glad I learned about you a couple days ago.

    Hay Phil, going over some of your older stuff and love this piece, going to try one myself now, also the first time I've seen your face, face to name. Oh, and sorry I did giggle. 3 HOURS 😲😲😲

      Oh, please do try one, Garry. This is a very rewarding turning. I don't know if you've seen the second one I did. It's more casual and proves you don't need to be quite so nit-picky about the set up if you don't want to. Have fun! 😊

    What a great project, as always your gouge work is brilliant Phil. I have some white oak (reclaimed from a neighbours 60 year old workbench that was falling apart), I may have to give it a go.
    Just an idea, as you didn't have anything in your tail stock when you cut the tenon, you could have used a long boring drill to put a small hole through the tail and give you a centre point.

    Just finished watching this video. Love it❤. Makes me want to give it a try. Like that you included the finishing at the bench. What are your thoughts on burning in your signature. You may have covered this in a video I have not gotten to yet so forgive me or this might make a good topic for a video. Oh well one other question in dealing with the tear out in this oak would a scraper be an alternative to consider. That’s a lot of comment from me don’t know if it’s because I am doing more turning now and have developed questions or just that I am real ignorant in general. Any way really like this piece and plan to try one in red cedar.may be a mistake to use such a soft wood. I still would like to send you some wood to play with if you don’t have tooooo much already. Need to find a way to get a mailing address without hackers and spammers spoiling things. If you can point me in the right direction I will try again. Dan

      I just scrolled up to see if you watched the other one of these and I see you did. They are a lot of fun. Quite a challenge but fun nonetheless. You can see by the second video that there really is no need to be so precise, just have fun with it. I don't love using scrapers and for me, it doesn't seem to be wood type that is the problem. More so, it's the particular piece of wood you are dealing with at the moment. Sometimes scrapers work great, other times they do more damage (tearout) then they are worth. I try to shear scrape with my gouge and that works pretty well most of the time. I don't burn my signature but many folks do. I just find a pen easy to use.
      As far as reaching me, there is only one way and that is to get my email address from my About tab: www.youtube.com/@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop/about It won't work from a phone unless you request the full site URL. A PC works great. I wish UA-cam would fix that. Thanks for watching, Dan! 😊

    That turned out great very unique piece!!! Looks like red oak and if it gets wet it will turn black in that wet spot exactly why I'm not sure I've seen it in red oak that I've brought for my cabinet shop and you can't get it out it's like an oxidization thing especially if iron fillings get on it !

  • @carsonwells1785
    @carsonwells1785 Рік тому +1

    Saw a similar piece of laminated plywood turned by another UA-camr. Had to be solid lumber core plywood, as there wew no voids and nice grain patterns to finished project. He began by sanding two opposite corners flat, measuring the midpoint of each side of each flat and then drawing lines from each midpoint to opposite corner of flattened triangle. The three lines crossed in the center, and he didn't have to worry about losing friction.to locare the center of the base, remove the small stub and construct it geometrically. Swing a compass from opposite sides with legs set greater than radius. Draw a line through the two intersections of the arcs and your center lies on that line. Do it again and intersection of the two straight lines is your center.

  • @DanEcho67
    @DanEcho67 6 років тому +5

    When you part off the point to make the tenon, leave a small second nub that is measured with your calipers to fit into the live center with the point removed. When you reverse it to part off the tenon, the nub slides into the live center and.... there you go. Should be pretty close.

    I haven't read the comments, and you may have already figured it out, but i am not concerned about the edges, whether uneven from glue-up or from tear-out bc i use my lathe-mounted disc sander to sand the edges, rather than hand sand as you have suggested. It works fine for me so you may want to give it a try.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  4 роки тому

      Yes, I suppose I could use my stationary belt sander to do that. Either method would not get rid of the major tear-out I had until I finally got a clean cut with the gouge, though.

    Very nice job Phil, I don't think the glue up took anything away from the nice looking piece.
    The way you think things through your ready to take on any turning.
    I have only done one tri corner bowl myself. And I was confused on how to hold it and get the tenon off.
    I made it very complicated holding it trying to avoid turning off a tenon.
    I glued up my Mutant project and while the glue dried I made a carving on my CNC and have posted video of the process.
    Keep bringing on those great turnings.

    Hi Phil Great looking tri corner bowl out of red oak. Very hard wood to work with yet the finished results are beautiful and well worth the hard work and endless sanding. Look up Tri bowl by Maple-Crossing Woodworks on Utube. He had a vacuum tube and what looked like a home made vacuum attachment that held his Tri bowl in place perfectly plus I just heard about a doughnut chuck for wood lathes. I had never heard of or seen these before and I have been woodworking and bowl turning since about 1967. Just thought I would tell you about these two types of chucks as they are both home made and I found plans for the doughnut chuck on google. Something I know a man of your skill set can make no problem. Keep up the great work Phil.

      Yes, I'm familiar with the chucks you mention. I've only been turning for a very short few years but have never felt the need for any additional chucks. I've been able to accomplish what I need to do with very basic holding methods and like to keep it simple.

    Is your Nova chuck open through the center of it? Could you have maybe sent a drill bit in from the other side of the head stock and made a center hole while it was mounted in the chuck? I guess it would have to be on something wide enough to center itself in the head stock hole, which would then make it grab at it. But, at a slow enough speed, with a good enough handle... maybe you could've gotten just enough divot to help?

    A really elegant design. Looks simple yet fairly complicated to do. I watched Mike Waldt's first, the design challenged me & then you popped up. Nearly failed at the first hurdle, though, and that was getting the centre point out of the live centre! So this will be the next project but one. Interesting to see your earlier work/earlier vids. Phil, Love your coolness on these things that you haven't done before especially the one you have just done, I know its a way back but I'm a newbie to wood turning after retiring from the construction industry and I'm watching so many videos' on turning. Got a nice lathe and a few bits and pieces in my garage, the good lady even brings me a coffee now and again, she probably loves the peace and quit of having me at home, LOL. Great vidioes.

      Thank you, Alan! I think the coolness attitude comes from age. You know, "if this kills me, well, I've already lived a long time." LOL! Ok, maybe it comes from practice. Ok, it really comes from being confident in the hold I have on a piece. If I know it's not going to go flying, I can concentrate on getting it done. When I retired, I too spent hours watching videos to learn to turn. It was a long haul but one day everything just clicked. You've got the lathe, you're half-way there! Enjoy those cups of coffee from the good lady. One day they may be one of your favorite memories.

    Phil... the hurricane as passed fairly peacefully and we're getting back to normal. Your wood is still here, didn't blow away. I'll try to get it to the shipper this week.

    Hi Phil,
    Outstanding job and a beautiful bowl!
    We have a lot of Red Oak in CT and I found that if it's not dries carefully it WILL crack.
    I made a small 3" lidded box last year.I set it on my bench to dry out and about 3 days later I heard a pop.I went to the bench but didn't see that anything had fallen so I just quit looking.About a week later I checked the box and found that it didn't only crack,,,it separated down one side about 1/8" and eventually it opened up to almost 1/4"!!! I keep it as reminder on how to deal with green Oak!
    Thanks for the video,,,
    Tom

      Oh, man, Tom, I hate when that happens! Especially with the time invested in a lid and all. So far I haven't experienced any of that but I suppose it's coming my way!

    Phil, I'm a new sub, and I am very happy to have come accrossed your channel. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you turn this three pointed vessel, and I also enjoyed the narration of it. It was very imformative and helpful, with you mentioning the speed and type of tools you were using. I will be watching for more new videos from you, and I will also be checking out your previous releases.

    Very nice work Phil. It was quite interesting to watch how you started the piece, figuring out which corners to keep and which to get rid of. It was also interesting to see how you handled the tear out. Thanks for sharing. See ya in the next one.

    Great job! I’d love to get the finish quality on such hard wood. I turn white oak and it’s so hard I get dust instead of shavings even when I switch to a carbide cutter. Thanks for the inspiration

    Hay Phil how are you this is mike from Missouri maybe on you piece where it's blow out if you know your thickness you can cut the surface layer with a razor I've found it works real good you can turn it right up to you cut and there you go with sanding you'll never know though you might try it out love watching you Phil have a great day or evening witch ever it may be

    Hey Phil, wow this is something special, I love this tri bowl, you are definitely right that it catches the eye because it got mine. And even it being a glue up, I think adds to its character. I also love to hear you explain the steps you are taking and your thought process while you are turning, thank you for a great video. 📐💜📐

    This is the only video I have ever watched that had me on the edge like the time I caught a 37lb Flathead catfish on an ultralight rod with 6lb test while standing on a powerplant discharge. In other words my heart was racing from all the variables that could of just ruined this piece in the blink of an eye. I also had White oak piece blow up on me. This was educational and exciting. Thank you.

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I am very familiar with terror. You know those types that are blessed with good luck? I'm the polar opposite of that. I had my legs crushed in a industrial accident and have been disabled since I was 33 and I am 48 now. I spend a lot of time with my lathe. I like art forms that are unforgiving and difficult. I do Scrimshaw, draw with ink, wood carving, antler carving, stone carving and really enjoy my lathe. I enjoyed tattooing for 9 years but it's a very ugly work environment and just feel better making bowls. I like projects that take deep concentration because it stops my PTSD in it's tracks. Your video really is an adventure. I'm happy it worked out for you.

    Another great turn and some day with all the things i want to try in life I will try this too. 1st I’d seen this type of bowl was bob Hamilton. Sadly I think he is sick or passed as I haven’t seen a video for a few years.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 років тому

      This is one of my favorites, CG. It still seems like magic, the way it went from a cube to three corners. I haven't seen Bob's video on this, I will look it up. Sadly, he did pass, I think 2-3 years ago.
      Thank you, again, for taking your time to watch and comment!
